10 Talents to Watch in the UEFA Champions League Knockouts 2022

10 Talents to Watch in the UEFA Champions League Knockouts 2022

The UEFA Champions League is back on screens this week.

How we’ve missed that awe-inspiring, harmonious and breathtaking Handel-inspired Champions League anthem on our speakers, but we’re so glad its back as we look forward to another year of juicy European ties.

It might have taken two attempts to complete the draw in December but the round of 16 has certainly pulled out some exciting fixtures, with some of Europe’s heavyweights and a few of the most decorated up and coming clubs on the continent go head-to-head.

Other than the usual suspects like Lionel Messi, Mohamed Salah, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski, who are some of under-the-radar players to look out for?

#AnthonyScouts picks out nine exciting footballers enjoying stellar campaigns, who could make their name on the grandest European stage…

Karim Adeyemi, Red Bull Salzburg

This will be RB Salzburg’s first-ever Champions League knockout tie after negotiating a tricky and exciting group containing Wolfsburg, Sevilla, and Lille.

The Austrians possess a decorated history in bringing through bright, young talent, including Takumi Minamino, Patson Daka, Dominik Szoboszlai, Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Erling Haaland in recent years.

Though, the current jewel in their crown and arguably Europe’s most exciting young striker is 20-year-old Karim Adeyemi, who has lit up the Austrian Bundesliga so far this season and looks well equipped to become one of Europe’s biggest stars.

Adeyemi is reportedly on the radar of a number of clubs on the continent including Barcelona, Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, and he could well be on his way the latter with the German giants reportedly close to securing Adeyemi’s signature for next season.

The Germany international has consummately sharpened his attacking output with an incredible 14 league goals in 18 games for RB Salzburg in 2021-22, eclipsing his return of eight goals and seven assists in his first full season last year. In eight UEFA Champions League games this season, including the early qualifying rounds, Adeyemi has notched 4 goals.

Besides possessing a unique eye for goal, Adeyemi is a stunning player to watch, a flawless young forward, blessed with such searing pace and acceleration, incredible close control and amazing trickery making him an absolute nightmare for opposition defenders. He regularly looks to pull wide and attack the penalty area with his low centre of gravity to make space for a shot.

Two of his three goals in the Champions League have come from the penalty spot and Adeyemi will be eager to add to his tally in Europe. Salzburg have been handed a very tough draw against Bayern Munich but Adeyemi’s incentive to impress on the grandest stage will be heightened by the fact he was released from Bayern’s academy at the age of 10. They are also one of the clubs that have been most heavily linked with a move for him in the summer.

This could well set up to be one of the most captivating headlines of the campaign.

Pedro Gonçalves, Sporting Lisbon

One of Portugal’s hottest prospects and a player certainly on a mission to force his name in the European headlines is Sporting Lisbon’s incredibly gifted forward, Pedro Gonçalves.

The former heir to Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes’ throne at the José Alvalade Stadium, has, incredibly, proven even more prolific for the Portuguese champions than the Manchester United ace.

Gonçalves was an integral figure in helping Sporting win their first Primeira Liga title for 19 years last season, finishing as the league’s top goalscorer with 23 goals from a scarcely believable xG total of 11.6.

Fernandes had a stupendous season in 2018-19 for Sporting, scoring 20 league goals, but Pedro Goncalves outdid him last season.

In doing so, he became the Primeira Liga’s first Portuguese top scorer since Domingos back in 1996.

This goalscoring feat is made all the more impressive given the 23-year-old’s position. Sporting operate in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Goncalves as a hybrid attacking midfielder/forward between the lines — often drifting to the right-hand side. His ability to locate spaces in between the lines and in the half-space is incredible and highlights his wealth of tactical knowledge and super versatility.

His finishing isn’t too bad either, as his phenomenal stats show.

Naturally right-footed, Gonçalves is capable of clinical strikes with his left foot as well, and his great form has continued into this season.

Pedro Gonçalves, nicknamed “Pote” has netted six times in the league so far and added two braces versus Besiktas and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League as Sporting survived defeats in their opening fixtures to qualify for the last 16. He’s also recorded five assists in the league highlighting his wonderful gifts in not only scoring goals, but creating them too.

Gonçalves was previously on the books at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and his impressive performances in the Champions League will no doubt have caught the eye of more Premier League sides with a view to bringing him back to England in the very near future.

It could be the perfect audition, given that Sporting play Manchester City in what could potentially be a tasty tie in the round of 16. Pep Guardiola’s men are likely to be strong favourites, but Pote could make life difficult — and maybe make Pep take notice too.

Arnaut Danjuma, Villarreal

When Arnaut Danjuma joined Villarreal from AFC Bournemouth last summer for €25m, little did we know he’d make such a telling impact in Unai Emery’s progressive side so soon.

A few months into his Spanish top-flight career and the recently-made Netherlands international has become one of La Liga’s blossoming individuals so far this season.

After hitting 17 goals and 7 assists in the Sky Bet Championship last season, the former Club Brugge forward was always destined for bigger and better things but many thought he’d make that step up in the Barclays Premier League rather than beyond borders.

With several clubs interested in his services last summer, it was Villarreal who took a punt on his flawless abilities, and its safe to say the 24-year-old hasn’t looked back.

20 appearances, 9 goals (5 in La Liga, 4 in the Champions League), and 3 assists, Danjuma has certainly showed he is good enough and ready to cut it amongst the most elite footballers in Europe. The slippery Dutchman has gone from the Championship to the Champions League without batting an eyelid at the transition.

Danjuma’s trajectory over the past year has been nothing short of sensational, and already he is showing his talents on the most prestigious of footballing stages in the UEFA Champions League.

If you need any pieces of evidence as to how good he is, not only that, but how invaluable he’s become to Unai Emery’s side in short space of time, check out his performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the group stages.

It was simply jaw-dropping, giving full-back Diogo Dalot a torrid evening.

Danjuma may have been one of La Liga’s most expensive transfers this summer, but is currently proving he’s worth every penny spent. The Europa League winners were looking for a player who could help them jump forward to the next level tactically and in attack and Danjuma is keeping his part of the bargain.

Unai Emery’s men are clearly more efficient, potent and exciting on the attack and much of that is down to Danjuma’s unpredictable nature on the left-flank.

Villarreal have a tough fixture against Juventus in the knockout stages, and they will need Danjuma firing on all cylinders after his return from injury to have any chance of causing yet another Emery-European-upset.

Jonathan David, LOSC Lille

Since his move to Lille from Belgium outfit Gent in the summer of 2020, Canadian Jonathan David has come on leaps and bounds, although he did endure a difficult start – going on a run of seven games without a goal.

However, in the second half of last season, his form picked up.

Eleven of his 13 league goals in 2020-21 came after the turn of the year, as Lille done the unthinkable, finishing the campaign as French Ligue 1 champions.

This season, Lille have struggled to maintain their form as they currently sit in mid-table in Ligue 1. However, Jonathan David has continued his tremendous development. He is Ligue 1’s second top scorer with 12 goals from 19 appearances, just two goals behind AS Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder.

In a league including Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, that is a superb feat.

An extraordinary unique forward, blessed with great pace, skill, tenaciousness, trickery and acceleration. The Canadian is tremendously versatile too, capable of playing anywhere in attack; as a no.9, right-winger, left-winger, and a no.10. If fast and speedy players are your type, then Jonathan David is your man.

A player whose game is based on an exciting blend of technique, mental sharpness and tremendous physical attributes.

The Canadian has excelled in his work-rate and off-the-ball attributes. So far this campaign, he is recording 5.39 successful pressures per 90minutes. He is in the top 10 percent of forwards in Europe’s top five leagues when it comes to pressures off the ball owing to his tremendous energy, enthusiasm and work rate. David has traded off some of that defensive work, and remodeled himself as a poacher in front of goal. A record of 0.48 non-penalty goals per 90 is brilliant and is simply going to get better.

David’s scoring form in Ligue 1 over the past two seasons, and for Canada where he’s been the top CONCACAF scorer in World Cup Qualifying, suggests he could score more goals for any of Europe’s top clubs, and with his name reportedly in the headlines for a number of top European outfits this summer, he could well be on the move.

First he’d have to help Lille navigate through a tough fixture against last season’s European champions Chelsea, and there is no doubt that the young Canadian forward will be central to any potential upset.

Jurrien Timber, Ajax

Ajax’s youth academy has been providing Europe’s biggest clubs with elite talent for decades now and with the likes of Jurrien Timber emerging the trend is not slowing.

There’s been no change in the Ajax philosophy ever since: they invest tremendously in youth, making sure that the players receive the best physical and mental development, and even more importantly, that they are granted the earliest possible trust at the highest level.

Timber is the latest of those entrusted with significant responsibility in the first team, and is thriving as a result.

The youngster earned Erik ten Hag’s trust with his composure and vision as he reads the game well and fits Ajax’s strategy perfectly. His displays granted him a regular starting spot which he hasn’t taken for granted and has used to prove his qualities while becoming one of the team’s key players.

While they have always been successful in attack, this term their defensive performance has been exceptional. At the time of writing, Ajax have only conceded FIVE league goals in 22 games, which is a remarkable record and underlines the importance of their defensive players.

Ten Hag’s side also made history in the Champions League by winning all their games in the group stage, outplaying Sporting CP, Borussia Dortmund and Beşiktas.

Ajax are currently the best performing team in Eredivisie, displaying high awareness, composure and consistency. The team’s well-measured actions and anticipation skills result in a high success rate in almost every aspect.

The Ajax players are proficient in winning their challenges clearly, despite actually having the highest challenge intensity (duels, tackles and interceptions per minute of opponent possession) in the league. They are first in the league in terms of successful actions with 66.9% of won defensive duels on average.

Despite the lack of experience, Jurrien Timber has successfully contributed to Ajax’s unbreachable defence possessing impressive composure in defence which puts him ahead despite his lack of physicality and height. His technique and confidence on the ball allow him to dive into challenges and escape pressure through dribbling which helps the team in retaining possession.

His composure results in winning 76.2% of his defensive duels, which is a better percentile compared to his centre-back partner, Lisandro Martínez (73.5%).

What makes him successful defensively, though, is his positional sense. Timber’s ability to read the game helps him in anticipating the oppositions’ movement and move into spaces so he can pressurise his opponents and block their attacking efforts. He contributes with 13.35 recoveries per game and roughly four of them are in the opposition half.

This underlines his strong positioning and anticipation skills, although it also indicates the whole team strategy, which has the defensive line positioned high in possession.

The key qualities that have led to his valuable contribution are his concentration and work ethic. The 20-year-old is constantly aware of his surroundings and it is difficult to catch him out of position and unprepared. If their opponents Benfica are to triumph in this tie, they will have to do incredibly well to bypass Jurrien Timber and his resilient defensive counterparts.

Ridle Baku, Wolfsburg

Ridle Baku has enjoyed a seismic rise over the past 18 months, swapping relegation-threatened Mainz 05 for Champions League football at the Volkswagen Arena.

At an age where many of his peers are just beginning to take their first steps in the Bundesliga, Baku has already started over 100 topflight Bundesliga matches, won a U21 European Championship, and narrowly missed out on Germany’s Euro 2020 squad.

With summer interest from PSG & Bayern, and Tottenham Hotspur it won’t be long before Baku is tearing up the pitch for Hansi Flick’s national team and competing for silverware at one of Europe’s elite outfits.

The right-sided midfielder, come right-back is an incredibly astute, tactically aware and all-round footballer.

The young right-back was an influential piece in the Germany U21 side that won the European Championship in June and as a result, is already attracting significant interest from clubs around Europe. Baku was named Player of the Match in the U21 final against Portugal and even concluded the tournament with the highest assists (3).

In the 38 appearances Baku made for German side Wolfsburg last term, he recorded an impressive 16 goal involvements, recording 6 goals and 6 assists in the German Bundesliga.

This season, he has continued his fine contribution to Wolfsburg’s goal threat, with two goals and two assist whilst also scoring in the Champions League group stages against RB Salzburg in November.

The 1.76m-tall defender, who can even be deployed as a midfielder, lead the ranking for the Bundesliga with 1,061 sprints last season. This season’s tally may have decreased, but he’s still within the top 10 sprinters in the division with 598 sprints. Few players covered a greater distance last season than him. He was the 10th-best runner with 351 km run on the field.

The 23-year old is always more than willing to make lung-busting runs forward as well as make the hard yards back to rescue a situation defensively.

Baku is highly versatile too having already played in all possible positions on the right-flank for the team. He’d prove a valuable asset for any top outfit in Europe owing to his incredible versatility but also providing his side with the opportunity to be tactically flexible. Wherever he is deployed, Ridle Baku will give his utmost.

With quick changes of direction, a glue-like control, and fluid movement, Ridle Baku is able to wriggle free from any lunging challenges and create the attacking impulses which have made him such a resounding success at the Volkswagen Arena.

The 23-year-old has brought lofty comparisons to Germany and Bayern Munich icon Philipp Lahm, showing what a generational talent Wolfsburg have on their books.

Though Ridle Baku has a long way to go before winning 113 national team caps, and 17 major titles, the intelligence in his positional play is right in line with FC Bayern’s former captain. Whereas Lahm made the switch from rightback to defensive midfield in the latter stages of his career, Baku has undergone the opposite transition, playing primarily as a midfielder for Mainz before operating almost exclusively on the right flank at Wolfsburg.

Just as Lahm was adept at moving inside from right-back or dropping into the wide channels from a midfield role, Baku’s ability to drift into the half-spaces have made him an absolute nightmare for opposition fullbacks. The Under-21 European Championship were perhaps the best example of this. Baku, operating primarily at right midfield in a classic 4-2-3-1, was electric from start to finish, ending the competition with the most goal contributions as Germany lifted the title with a 1-0 victory over Portugal.

Baku completed the 5th most crosses of any Bundesliga fullback last season, routinely searching for the head of new Burnley striker Wout Weghorst or providing a driven ball into the run of an advancing midfielder. Whilst he may not be as prolific as either Borna Sosa of Stuttgart or Filip Kostić of Frankfurt, the variety of ways Baku can hurt an opposition defense makes up for his somewhat inconsistent crossing.

Ridle Baku may have only registered 2 assists from the wide right channel this season, but when afforded time and space he is more than capable of finding his target.

Nuno Mendes, Paris Saint-Germain

Nuno Mendes has been getting rave reviews since making the move from Lisbon to Paris last summer as PSG’s new left-back.

At just 19 years old, Mendes has adapted well from a wing-back role in a 4-3-2-1 at Sporting Lisbon to a full-back role within PSG’s 4-3-3, but his skill set remains unchanged.

The Portugal international has made 15 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in Ligue 1 this season, alongside his six appearances in the UEFA Champions League. Touted as one of the finest talents of his position on the continent, Nuno Mendes is certainly on his way to world-wide stardom.

Last season at Sporting, Mendes cemented his status as the finest left-back in Portugal thanks to a deadly combination of speed, explosive movement, and close control which allows him to create danger either from a standing start or whilst on the counter-attack.

Apart from his dribbling, Mendes boasts an excellent crossing ability whether tightly marked or open in space, and his physical prowess allows him to beat out opponents to the ball either with his speed or strength.

Despite boasting such incredible speed and strength through his lambasting runs, he’s only successfully completed 0.88 dribbles per90 so far this season, but that will only increase with more playing time and development. However, he is relatively still creative with his contributions in attack, averaging 0.98 key passes, and 3.43 final third passes per90 whilst also possessing 2.64 shot-creating actions per90. He’s al an adept defender, boasting a SmarterScout defending intensity rating of 95 out of 99.

Given his speed and imposing size, he is able to recover well whenever he might be slightly out of position, frequently nicking the ball away from the opponent and often blocking crosses into the box. He averages a very good 4.12 tackles + interceptions reading per 90 minutes. For ball recoveries and interceptions, he is rated by SmarterScout 97 out of 99.

His 3.3 dribbles attempted per 90 put him in the top 10 per cent for full-backs in Ligue 1 this season, and he can be crucial in opening up space for his team-mates to exploit.

Mendes is still in the category of a raw and unpolished talent but he has all the materials and skills required to be one of the leading left-backs in world football. The pace of Mendes and Kylian Mbappe down PSG’s left-hand side is enough to give any opponent nightmares, even their knockout opponents Real Madrid. Be prepared for an enthralling tie.

Vinicius Jr, Real Madrid

It’s completely safe to say, Vinicius Jr is enjoying his best season in a Real Madrid shirt.

His 12 league goals are bettered only by team-mate Karim Benzema, with the pair contributing to a high proportion of his team’s attacking output this season as Los Blancos lead the way in La Liga, by four points.

Vinicius’ turnaround and maturity in his decision-making and all-round game over the past year or so has been nothing short of phenomenal. In 2020/21, he underperformed xG by a remarkable 3.82. For context, that’s twice as bad as anyone else in the Real Madrid squad. In 2021/22, he’s overperforming by 3.1 xG, a figure more than twice as good as anyone else, excluding Karim Benzema.

Benzema-dependencia, as the Spanish media like to call Real Madrid’s reliance on Karim Benzema for goals, well that phrase has been thrown out the window as a result of Vinicius Jr’s sudden purple patch. Now, Karim Benzema who didn’t approve of the Brazilian over a year ago, simply cannot perform without him.

While its a testament and credit to the 21-year-old, the credit must also be given to Carlo Ancelotti who has totally unleashed the Brazilian with undying belief and faith in his abilities.

He is a double threat from the left wing, scoring goals as well as creating them (8 assists so far this campaign) — largely owing to his direct play when the ball is at his feet. No player in La Liga can top his rate of 7.3 attempted dribbles per 90 this season, and goes to show how often he looks to commit defenders which can open up space for others, such as Benzema.

In this season’s Champions League, Vinicius’s 18 chances created in open play is more than any other player in the competition, as he frequently drives into dangerous areas to pull a pass back for an oncoming team-mate.

Vinicius is no longer that naïve, overconfident and inexperienced raw talent that arrived through the Real Madrid doors in 2018. He’s now more an assured, mature and decorated performer, still possessing bags of potential to become even greater and that spells such great news for Real Madrid, a healthy return on their risky investment.

Vinicius has shown this season whatever the situation, he can and will create – whether it be scoring or assisting, he is quickly becoming a central protagonist within Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Real Madrid’s upcoming blockbuster clash with PSG is arguably the pick of the last-16 matches. Having won the competition in three successive seasons from 2016-2018, Real have gone out of the Champions League at this stage twice in the last three seasons.

If they are to correct that slide, they will need Vinicius Jr at his flawless best as he’ll be coming up against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Di Maria and Messi. Pick your poison.

Antony, Ajax

Already an Olympic gold medalist, Antony has enjoyed a spectacularly successful rookie season at Ajax. The Brazilian right-winger is known for his rapid dribbling, amazing ball-trickery as well as his unique eye for goal.

The fact that Ajax have two talents on this list once again highlights their incredibly bright youthful roster, and a potential prediction that they could yet again take the UEFA Champions League by storm like they did in the 2018/19 campaign.

Whilst Sebastien Haller has been the pick of a talented bunch, Brazilian wing-wizard has arguably stolen the spotlight through his showstopping performances for Ajax in this year’s Champions League.

The 21-year-old has recorded 2 goals and 5 assists in 5 games, possessing a phenomenal xA average of 2.0 placing him the top 6 of players throughout the competition. The Brazilian also ranks first in the Champions League for goal-creating actions (9) and goal-creating actions per90 (2.06). He also ranks sixth for progressive carries (52).

The Brazilian is an inventive and intelligent player. With nine goals and eight assists in his first 1,200 Eredivisie minutes, there is unlikely to be a better rookie in the Dutch top-flight this season. Antony has taken to life excellently at Ajax, and has his gifted and mastery left foot to thank.

Much of the time, Antony enjoys hanging wide on the right so he can gain momentum after picking up the ball by driving inwards. His acceleration from a standing start is explosive; his elite balance and lower body strength allows him to remain on his feet even under heavy pressure – he is a worker with great endeavour, the type of player to clean up his own mess.

In Brazil, Antony relied more on ingenuity to create his moments, and there is still an element of that to his game. Now though, after just a matter of nearly a couple years in Europe, he plays with a calculating maturity and sensibility, while retaining that endearing unpredictable streak.

As with most Ajax players under the age of 25, the Johan Cruijff Arena will not be the last stop on the Antony Express. Slotting into elite European competition without skipping a beat is a sure-fire way of alerting Europe’s financially well-endowed sporting directors.

Who knows, some more scintilating performances in the knockout rounds will certainly push him closer to one of Europe’s elite clubs, probably this coming summer. The continent is certainly Antony’s oyster.

Alessandro Bastoni, Inter Milan

Italy is without doubt the home of defending. The list of renowned defenders from Bel Paese is endless. Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Gaetano Scirea, Fabio Cannavaro and Alessandro Nesta are just some of the legendary names that have represented Gli Azzurri.

As a new generation approaches for Italian football, their next great defender seems to already be turning heads across the continent.

Alessandro Bastoni was born in the small town of Casalmaggiore, Lombardy. At the age of seven, he joined Atalanta’s renowned youth sides. The young defender made waves at the Bergamo club, eventually earning himself a €31million move to one of Italy’s biggest clubs; Inter Milan.

After spending spells on loan to both Atalanta & Parma, Bastoni has now finally secured his place in the starting XI for the Nerazzurri. Currently touted as one of best defensive talents of this generation, Bastoni has immersed himself as one of Inter Milan’s most prominent figures for Antonio Conte in the title winning side last season, and for current manager Simone Inzaghi.

Bastoni’s defensive statistics aren’t spectacular, but they are exactly what you’d expect and want from a CB at a top club. He ranked 6th overall amongst Serie A defenders when defending vs. the dribble.

This season, he continues to impress within a well-rounded, cohesive and organised system in Simone Inzaghi’s 3-5-2 shape, a continuation of Conte’s title-winning formula last season. Batoni averages 3.10 tackles + interceptions per90, an improvement from last season (2.49), 2.93 clearances per90, 1.30 blocks per90 and wins an outstanding 67.8% of his aerial duels owing to relatively tall, lean and imposing frame.

Alessandro Bastoni’s defensive ability is incredible for his age. Inter Milan have kept the 2nd most clean sheets (10) and have conceded the second least goals (20) in Serie A this season. Bastoni has been a key part of that defence, playing in 21 of their 25 of league games.

One of the areas that the Italian thrives is on the ball. Bastoni has long been regarded as one of the best ball-playing centre-backs in the division. He completes 4.62 passes into the final third per 90 – amongst the best for defenders in the league. He is not only progressive on the ball, he’s very secure with it too. He has completed 93.6% of passes this season so far. Bastoni is not someone who shies away from the ball either, averaging the third most touches of Inter’s starting XI per 90 (79.7).

The Italian is clearly an incredible young defender, anybody who has watched Inter Milan this season will know this. With a tough fixture against Liverpool to come, Inter will need their stunning young centre-back in his best form if they are to stop the likes of Diogo Jota, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane from wrecking havoc.

Vinicius Jr the Young Star Real Madrid Can Now Rely On

Vinicius Jr the Young Star Real Madrid Can Now Rely On

It was exactly over a year ago – at half-time in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League group-stage tie against German outfit Borussia Mochengladbach – that Karim Benzema complained to teammate and French counterpart Ferland Mendy and instructed him not to pass to Brazilian Vinicius Jr as a result of the youngster’s greed and immaturity in the final third.

As ruthless and as rude as it was for Benzema to behave in such a way, the incident reflected the difficulties and struggles Vinicius Jr endured at this period in his Real Madrid career.

Certainly, he’s young, showing levels of immaturity at such a level, over-exuberant at times but it was expected especially in the context of where he came from, the branch offices of Flamengo, in the neighborhood of Mutuá, in São Gonçalo.

An area where he was taught to showboat, to express himself and to become the best trickster no matter if it came at the cost of his own team.

When Vinícius Júnior joined Real Madrid, he had it all. Well, almost. His all-round game was exciting. Dribbling second to none. Pace better than any of his opponents. Skill-set unmatched. No-one could keep up with him.

That’s who we was, a flamboyant footballer who always tried the audacious tricks, shots and pieces of skill not knowing how it could affect his teammates around him, and you’d be sure a player as experienced and decorated as Benzema is, he’d understand the nature of such a footballer seeing as he grew up in similar circumstances in France.

But when you’re as celebrated and successful as Benzema is, you expect the players around you to be hold similar mindsets and a winning mentality and it was evidently clear Vinicius Jr didn’t, which was no fault of his own.

It’s as if every time the Brazilian got to the final third, he’d slip up, either by shooting wayward when a pass to a fellow teammate would have sufficed or his over-exuberance getting the better of him attempting one or two tricks too many.

It was a recurring theme in Vinicius’ game, proving a tough cycle for him to grow out of.

But, things are much different now, fast forward a year and a month or so, you’d be delighted at the growth and maturity that the former Flamengo wing-wizard is currently performing at.

Under new coach Carlo Ancelotti, the change in his game has been magnificent, spellbinding, fearless, you name it. Vinicius Jr is a different animal and Karim Benzema now cannot get enough of him.

With ten goals and five assists in 17 appearances in all competitions, Vinicius has already surpassed his best goals and assists tally in just 17 games, only a third of the number of appearances he made in the 2020/21 season with Zinedine Zidane.

In truth, the turnaround and maturity in his decision-making and all-round game has been nothing short of phenomenal. In 2020/21, he underperformed xG by a remarkable 3.82. For context, that’s twice as bad as anyone else in the Real Madrid squad. In 2021/22, he’s overperforming by 2.04 xG, a figure more than twice as good as anyone else, excluding Karim Benzema.

This is what the Real Madrid faithful had been waiting for all along, even more so, president Florentino Perez who initially desired Neymar to fulfil his galactico-type gratification but instead had to make do with Vinicius Jr.

Vinícius scored five in La Liga’s opening five games. By matchday six, he’d already been involved in eight goals and was stepping up as one of LaLiga’s most influential players, while also racking up six goal involvements in four Champions League appearances.

Injuries have played their part. Rodrygo Goes, Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale have all struggled with fitness, while Vinícius has shone on the field while staying fit. While all three have had long-term issues, Vini has only missed one game since May 2019, but his improvements have gone far beyond just keeping fit.

I think Vinícius has a lot of quality in one-on-ones,” the Italian coach said after the 21-year-old single-handedly tore apart Alavés. “I’ve told him that to score goals he has to take one or two touches, it’s difficult to score with four or five touches. He’s a very young player, he’s going to improve.

It’s become a common theme so far this season; the Brazilian wing-wizard tormenting defences and tearing apart opposition defenders with peerless pieces of skill, but all of that is down to the confidence rewarded to him from players like Benzema, but more importantly the extra training sessions and his ability to heed to the advice given to him by his coaches.

Since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Real lacked a character that was the focal point, a player who constantly threatened the opposition, and a target for opposition supporters. For all the brilliance of Benzema, the Frenchman is in actual fact universally loved and respected for his more silent and respectful demeanor.

Many thought it’d be Eden Hazard when he arrived from Chelsea, but his move hasn’t quite worked out because of injuries and lack of fitness. Gareth Bale was supposed to be the chosen one after Ronaldo left, but fans haven’t still taken quite a liking to him.

Vinicius looks the perfect candidate, he thrives in the chaos he creates, he’s comfortable with the attention he is garnering. The Brazilian is willing to stand up and wave the flag for the club, whether it be at the Mestalla, Wanda Metropolitano or Camp Nou.

The Clàsico earlier this season proved the perfect example of the mentality monster Vinicius has become. In enemy territory, in the face of much abuse, booing and jeering, he proved all-throughout to be a thorn in Barcelona’s side.

The Brazilian destroyed Barca’s right-hand flank, so much so that former boss Ronald Koeman withdrew Oscar Mingueza at halftime as a result. He may not have registered a goal or an assist, but it was clear throughout his time on the pitch, Vinicius was at the centre of Real’s attacks – a constant outlet and his teammates thrived off it.

Against Granada over the weekend, Vinicius stepped up when Real needed him most. Los Blancos were seemingly unsettled by the hosts, struggling to create and break through their stubborn backline. After the half-time break, it was Vinicius who proved the decisive contributor once again.

He played a part in a move which he finished off, within ten minutes of that, he had forced Monchu to desperately lunge at him after the Brazilian left him in his wake. The Granada midfielder was correctly sent off as a result as Vinicius lay on the turf, a smile on his face winning the battle and making his contribution toward winning the war.

All of that came just seconds after the Brazilian completed mazy jinking run ghosting past a hatful of Granada defenders, and fouling him in such a manner is now the only way defenders can stop him, yet the Brazilian would always finish the game having the last laugh.

The Brazilian finished the Granada match with a goal, 61 touches, a key pass, five dribbles, 3 shots on target with a WhoScored rating 8.58. Those stats only merely scratch the surface when analysing the kind of influence he is having on his teammates.

Amongst players in La Liga, Vinicius Jr ranks first for progressive distance carried per 90 (250.9), first for progressive carries (13.3), first for carries into the final third (3.67) and first for carries into the penalty area (3.94) highlighting his amazing dribbling efficiency but also incredible knack of taking on the responsibility in driving Real Madrid up the pitch.

He ranks second for goal-creating actions (9) and third for shot-creating actions (62) once again showing that he is being trusted with leading Real Madrid’s attacks and the growing responsibilities afforded to him.

This season, Vinícius is more incisive and clinical, no longer doubting, hesitating or waiting for that split second. While in both 2019/20 and 2020/21 he made an average of 1.2 shots per 90 minutes, the number has risen to 2.8 per 90 in 2021/22. Much of that is down purely to confidence and a greater sense of urgency in Real Madrid’s all-round play.

Vinicius Jr has certainly grown and matured into one of Europe’s most complete performers right now, and that is showing through his performances but also more importantly his goal returns have taken a huge boost and that’s a credit to him recognizing the areas in which to improve on in the final third, and its now reaping its just rewards.

The question is now, can he translate this sort of form on a consistent basis for years to come or will it drown out like so many of other young talents before him? That’s for him to decide, but the ball is totally in his flawlessly talented court.

Those previous doubts surrounding Vinicius’ naivety and recklessness in the attacking areas are fading away. There can be little doubt over his raw talent. His passion and abilities is almost trademark Brazilian, and his drive is unrivalled in the modern game. His technical ability is magnificent, and he now appears to have the finishing skills to match. He’s proven that he’s more than a young winger with flair, he’s a man who can make a difference and win a game on his own.

Real Madrid have always possessed a talent capable of taking games by the scruff of the neck, and Vinicius Jr is now the latest in a very long line of decorated and pure footballing talents. Long may his stunning form continue.

The night Lionel Messi handed over the torch to Kylian Mbappe.

The night Lionel Messi handed over the torch to Kylian Mbappe.

From the moment Julian Draxler drew in Frenkie De Jong – the last moments of a thrilling counter-attack produced by Paris Saint-Germain to put Barcelona to the sword – and slipped in Kylian Mbappe to notch his hattrick and the first treble scored against Barcelona since Andriy Shevchenko 24 years ago, you just knew the inevitable. It was game, set and match.

The sheer ruthlessness at which the French 22-year-old superstar caressed such a unerring shot into the corner of Marc Andre Ter-Stegen’s net was absolutely mesmeric. An iconic moment which saw this tremendous wonderkid finally come of age on the grandest European stage.

Kylian Mbappe – world cup winner with France in 2018 – re-announced himself on the world stage, as the man to take on the reigns of his great and legendary opponent for the night Lionel Messi. No doubt, the kid has done it before. He upstaged Lionel Messi on the way to France’s historic world cup triumph scoring two sumptuous goals as France totally outclassed the helpless Argentina in the quarter-finals.

He’s netted in some of Europe’s most prestigious stadiums: the Santiago Bernabeu (a stadium he could well light up again in a few years time), the Allianz Arena, the Allianz Stadium in Turin, the Signal Iduna Park, Anfield, the Etihad and Old Trafford.

But on Tuesday night, it felt more grandeur, more fitting that arguably the world’s hottest footballing talent would grab the headlines, and that he did with such unerring aplomb. Ladies and gentleman, please welcome again to the most iconic stage in world football, Kylian Mbappe.

The Frenchman also became the first visiting player to score 2+ goals against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in a Champions League knockout game in the 21st century. Don’t rest your attentions just yet, Kylian Mbappe has also now been directly involved in 40 Champions League goals (24 goals, 16 assists) in 41 games since his rapid emergence in the colours of Monaco during the 2016/17 campaign. A stupendous record for a player still in his early years.

Mbappe wasn’t even born, the last time a player scored a Champions League hattrick against Barcelona but on Tuesday night, if anyone had the nous, the aura and the brilliance to end such a record, it had to be PSG’s dynamite. The man for the big occasion, as he’ shown countlessly throughout his relatively short career so far.

The 22-year-old had only netted just one goal in his previous nine knockout outings, but turned that worrying statistic on its head in such devastating fashion. The night may have started with Lionel Messi – who scored the opening goal from the penalty spot – but it ended with the brilliance of Mbappe as Messi’s supreme superiority in these elite encounters gradually slipped away.

Mbappe, whose current contract runs until 2022, elegantly danced past French counterpart and Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet to smash home the equaliser, stroked home the second from 10 yards after some comical defending from the hosts and added the icing on the cake with a ruthless finish from a ruthless counter-attack.

Mbappe’s hat-trick meant he is now Paris Saint-Germain’s third highest scorer with 111 goals, behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic (158) and Edinson Cavani (200). The rate at which Kylian Mbappe continues to perform, there is simply no reason why the Frenchman cannot surpass Cavani’s superb record within the next year or so. As we have encountered on numerous occasions when it comes to Mbappe is that he makes finishing look so easy, especially for a player his age.

The third goal is a clear example at the confidence, the aura, and the richness at which Kylian Mbappe personifies when he’s in front of goal. The Frenchman makes those kind of scenarios look so effortless, so tranquil that putting the ball in the back of the net is as easy for him as “123”, no pun intended.

Mbappe has now scored 20+ goals across all competitions in each of the last five seasons. Many may point to the nature and quality of the league he’s currently plying his trade in, and those same people will feel he needs to change to a much more competitive division like La Liga or the Barclays Premier League if he is to truly become one the world’s greatest players.

But lets have some patience, the moment for that move will come, for now though, Mbappe can only do the job that is in front of him. Lets agree to disagree, maybe his time at the French champions is just a stepping stone for him at club level, right?

But more importantly, lets divert back to the purpose for this piece, and that is, Paris Saint Germain’s victory over Barcelona was one that felt like a changing of the guard at football’s top table. With Mauricio Pochettino, at the helm, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe apparently happy where they are, and enjoying their football they could take that one step further this year and possibly win the prestigious Champions League trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

The French side won the first leg through a well-executed gameplan devised by their astute and tactically flexible manager in Pochettino. Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe served as the platform from which to build from in defence. Marco Verratti effortlessly pulled the strings from midfield along with Leandro Parades. Mauro Icardi and Moise Kean put in some assured and efficient performances, with the latter scoring his 14th goal in 20-odd appearances for the club.

Much like the 2018 World Cup enthralling encounter between Argentina and France, the meeting of Mbappe and Lionel Messi was ultimately decided by the better team with the better manager. For so long, Lionel Messi has turned out the unstoppable force, the individual genius and great coupled with some fellow talented and experienced individuals standing by his side, but last night saw the Barca legend toppled by the greater and more quality collective. The man many have worshipped and bowed to at the presence of his masterful abilities on the pitch was confronted by the reality that his throne and empire is crumbling, drawing to an abrupt ending… and in Kylian Mbappe is a player gradually becoming the new centre-piece, the new saviour, the new superfluous protagonist ready to take centre stage.

Tuesday night, we were so blessed to be provided with the most iconic of pictures that truly embodied and captured the changing of the two football super-powers.

An image showing Mbappe bursting through the Barcelona defence, with Gerard Pique, one of the most decorated central defenders to ever grace the flagship European competition, is seen holding on to the shirt of Kylian Mbappe like a kid pulling onto its mother’s shirt desperately wanting his toy back.

It’s an image which also highlights the explosiveness of Mbappe, his on-field talents are undeniable. A player who possesses the quickness of thought, the intelligence and silkiness of movement, in becoming one of the best finishers in European football. He can beat a defender in so many different ways: a dribble, a step-over, a swift feint or just plain explosive pace. The 22-year-old is simply thrilling to watch. If you want the image of the archetypal modern day footballer, short in stature but so powerful and explosive in his dazzling feet, it is Kylian Mbappe. It used to be the great Lionel Messi – opposed to the other great and finely built Cristiano Ronaldo – but last night provided an exploration of the transforming of styles…

One in which Kylian Mbappe reigned supreme.

Remember that night he made his Champions League debut, a game which introduced us to this kid’s dynamic and unique talents off the back of an awful tragedy. A match that shouldn’t have really taken place when Borussia Dortmund took on Monaco in April 2017.

That day, the Dortmund bus was attacked with homemade pipe bombs which left defender Marc Bartra seriously injured, and the Dortmund players mentally shaken. That night ended with little human empathy but much individual optimism, that the footballing future is very bright and in secure hands. A young Mbappe stole the show, scoring twice – showcasing his flawless goal-scoring abilities – and following it up in the second leg with another impressive goal. This kid can score all types of goals, but he’s at his most gracious when dissecting and bamboozling the most elite of defences and leaving them spiraling at his wake.

Four years on, and we are yet still purring, still gasping at the greatness of a player who has already achieved so much, but is still young enough to achieve even more. Mbappe has already dotted off so many of the “all-time greats” checklist of achievements, most notably the majestic world cup trophy – an achievement that even Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi probably won’t have the grace to get their hands on – though one particular trophy that is currently eluding the club where Mbappe is aiming to make his name.

Yes, that is of course the Champions League.

Barring yet another catastrophic collapse from Paris Saint-Germain against Barcelona in the second-leg – seriously we cannot have another repeat of that historic night four years ago – Mbappe will have already done away with one all-time great seeking to break his own personal Champions League duck, and move onto more sterner tests, no disrespect to Barcelona’s current plight.

Just as Messi enters the twilight of his own career, having reinvented our understanding of footballing greatness, last night saw the re-emergence of an explosive and unique French superstar currently at the dawn of his own.

Certainly, the tie is far from over with the second-leg still to come, but Paris Saint-Germain’s 4-1 first-leg victory provided the timely answer to the question many of us have been desperately seeking answers for, “Who will take over the throne when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo inevitably hang up their boots?” No, its not his team-mate Neymar, its the unique and spectacular young superstar, Kylian Mbappe.

He is indeed a generational talent.

Are RB Leipzig Serious Contenders for the Bundesliga Title?

Are RB Leipzig Serious Contenders for the Bundesliga Title?

The appointment of one of Europe’s youngest coaches, 32-year-old Julian Nagelsmann ahead of the 2019/20 campaign was met with much anticipation, excitement and widespread optimism after RB Leipzig had finished third in the Bundesliga under Ralf Rangnick – a well-renowned coach in his own right.

Nagelsmann, who made a name for himself after 4 impressive years at Hoffenheim – guiding Die Kraichgauer to their first Champions League campaign in 2017 – was seen by many, as an upgrade on Rangnick the perfect man to take RB Leipzig to the next level. 13 games into the new season and Leipzig find themselves second in the Bundesliga standings, a point behind Borussia Mönchengladbach.

1189572047.jpg.0
Nagelsmann has continued to impress his suitors at RB Leipzig.

Leipzig are currently the league’s highest scorers, 49 goals from 14 matches, and have also the joint third best defence conceding just 16. During his spell at Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann adopted a similar style and philosophy to what Rangnick achieved at Leipzig; both sides were compact in midfield, operated within vertical lines in the middle, counter-attacked swiftly and also thrived off wining the ball back deep into the opposition half. While Rangnick preferred the counter-press, Nagelsmann is favouring an all out high intensity pressing philosophy.

The 32-year old coach managed to get the best out of the players he had available to him at Hoffenheim last year, working wonders with the likes of Florian Grillitsch, Kerem Demirbay, Andrej Kramaric and Nadem Amiri. In a team considered an average side at best, Nagelsmann transformed them into world beaters.

Now, Nagelsmann harnesses one of the most complete sides in the Bundesliga, blessed with immense talent all over the pitch.

Three months into his new post at the Red Bull Arena, Nagelsmann seems right at home within his new surroundings. The inconsistencies of German’s two giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have allowed the others a shot at the top. Mönchengladbach and Leipzig have accepted the invitation with open arms.

1189572047.jpg.0

Now questions are being asked whether Leipzig are good enough to mount a serious threat to Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance.

14 games in, and Leipzig are certainly playing like a side with the wind in its sails. However, it hasn’t always been plain sailing. They have endured their own blip from the end of September and throughout October. During that run, they lost to Schalke and Freiburg, drew twice and were also beaten by Lyon in the Champions League.

That drop in form came after such a rapid start to the season with five wins from six games, the only blemish was the inspired draw at home to champions Bayern Munich. A game which will have provided Nagelsmann much optimism for the season and a further reminder of their title credentials.

As of late though, Leipzig are enjoying a period of invincibility, since their 2-1 defeat to Freiburg at the end of October, they have won six in seven – scoring an outstanding 27 goals in the process. Also, they are currently top of their Champions League group with anything other than a defeat in the last group fixture enough to secure top spot.

Under their new boss, Leipzig have often lined up in a 4-2-2-2 shape, one that the players are familiar with.

lineup
How Leipzig lined up in their last outing – a 3-2 win against Paderborn.

It is a shape that allows compactness, fluidity and an opportunity for them to press and counter press as a cohesive unit. Throughout this season, Leipzig have enjoyed the opportunity to exploit teams in between the lines, through overloading the wide areas of the attacking third and also through quick transitions. It’s no surprise that their fluid formation is fully in sync because of their awfully quick pawns. Players such as Timo Werner, Youssef Poulsen, Christopher Nkunku, Marcel Sabitzer all hold the speed and agility required to become so devastating on the counter.

Left-back Marcel Halsternburg is equally pivotal in their transitional play. It’s the constant rotation between him and the front four players that confuses defences and causes panic. For example, Mainz were forced to change their shape numerous times in order to counter-act Leipzig’s relentless fluidity. It proved fruitless as Nagelsmann’s side ran out 8-0 winners.

While Leipzig’s system has been dynamic, it has also gotten the best out of their front four. Whether its Werner, Poulsen, Schick, Sabitzer, Forsberg or Nkunku, Nagelsmann can be confident in the fact that his side will have no problems scoring goals. Sabitzer and Forsberg have been incredibly efficient this season, with the latter recapturing the sort of form that made him one of the best attacking midfielders during the 2016/17 season.

1189572047.jpg.0
Emil Forsberg has once again emerged as a key force under Nagelsmann.

Forsberg has registered six goals and three assists both domestically and in Europe this season, while Sabitzer has registered an impressive eleven goals and three assists. Along with Nkunku, they have often proved deadly when operating in between the lines or the ‘half-spaces’. It allows Leipzig’s full-backs the opportunity to wreak havoc and occupy the space left by the opposition full-backs.

Then there’s the potent front-line of Timo Werner and Youssef Poulsen, a duo that has to be considered one of the best in Europe. Werner’s sheer speed, ability on the counter and Poulsen’s size, work-ethic and hold play makes the two strikers such a deadly force in attack. With the array of creative talents behind them, Poulsen and Werner have no problems scoring goals. The German striker already has 19 goals in all competitions this season, 15 in the Bundesliga, only second to Bayern’s goal machine Robert Lewandowski. His tally is all the more impressive when you consider that he does most of his work creating overloads in the wings rather than operating centrally.

1189572047.jpg.0
Timo Werner is enjoying another remarkable season in front goal.

This is a squad packed with quality and its not only in attack where it all lies. Nagelsmann has also transformed the midfield and the back-line. No longer are Leipzig giving away cheap goals like they used to, you’d have to be really on form to breach such a well-knitted and well rounded unit. Diego Demme and Konrad Laimer are two unsung heroes for Nagelsmann, players that so often go unnoticed. Industrious, hard-working, bullish and at the same time awfully composed on the ball, a key reason as to why Leipzig are currently the second best defence in the league.

At the back, RB Leipzig harness a wealth of players who could become stars in the future. French duo Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate are two players built for the big time. You’ve also got the experience and know-how of Hungarian international Will Orban, versatile player Stefan Ilsanker and youngster Nordi Mukiele – a fine centre back but an ever better right-back.

A club intentionally built for progression and growth in its players, strategy, philosophy and remarkable fan base. Leipzig have achieved so much since its inception in 2009. Over a decade later, they could find themselves at the pinnacle of German football come May 2020.

Bundesliga title contenders? You bet!

Cristiano Ronaldo; The Man With the Footballing World at His Feet.

Cristiano Ronaldo; The Man With the Footballing World at His Feet.

Incredible. Astonishing. Mesmerising. Extraordinary.  There is simply not enough words to describe the brilliance and genius of one Cristiano Ronaldo. Tuesday night against Juventus in the Champions League quarter-final was another night in which Ronaldo came up trumps and proved every footballing fan who is pro-Messi that he still has much more left in the tank, and most of all that he should be considered the best player in the world.

Two goals, the second a delightful over-head kick which left Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon with no chance as Real Madrid took a giant step towards yet another Champions League semi-final and a possible third European title in a roll with an emphatic 3-0 victory in Turin.

DNOmBgNXUAEU9aV
Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning over-head kick doubles Real Madrid’s lead.

Into the veterinary age of 33, and Cristiano Ronaldo still continues to amaze us. The Portuguese forward has served up so many magical moments on a plate over the last decade and more but Tuesday’s performance showed he is the man Real Madrid turn to when they need him most, and turn up he did. His genius of a second has all but secured Real Madrid’s passage to the last 4, barring an inspired miracle by Juventus. The goal was so impressive even the home crowd could not do anything but applaud the genius that graced their stadium once again.

Once Ronaldo reached the ball head height, all the Juve defenders could do was watch and behold as the world stopped for a moment and experienced the amazement and awe of another Cristiano Ronaldo showpiece. Heads were drawn to Ronaldo’s brilliance like they’d experienced the second coming of Jesus Christ.

It was the moment the footballing world was at the feet of the extraordinary Portuguese superstar.

Fans who plainly see Lionel Messi as the best player in the world must have had second thoughts once Ronaldo netted that stunner. It was a joy to behold. Cristiano Ronaldo and Champions League knockout football is the perfect marriage: they complement each other so beautifully like bacon and eggs, like ketchup and chips or even cheese and wine. It’s the perfect combination that brings out the best in both, delivering the most scintillating moments on the grandest European stage, its where the best moments are made and Ronaldo never fails to impress.

To do that in one of the most iconic atmospheres in European history against such players as iconic as Buffon, Chiellini and co was almost unheard of, absurd and plain heinous. Zinedine Zidane orchestrated the perfect performance against a side he once graced as a player in his own genius days. From the brilliance of Keylor Navas – an underrated component in the side – to the sheer composure and elegance of Spanish playmaker Isco. Real Madrid were a class apart on a night where the Spanish giants always prove just too strong for their opponents. Despite their failures domestically, Zidane has managed to pull the cat out of the bag in Europe, and has done so for the last two seasons.

But lets not take anything away from the awesomeness of Cristiano Ronaldo.

He is quite simply in the goal-scoring form of his life, yes, of his life. Despite his brilliant scoring record for the Spanish giants, its crazy to say he is in actual fact in the goal-scoring form of his illustrious career. The Portuguese great has found the net in recent months at an extraordinary rate. 23 goals in his last 12 appearances just speaks volumes at the form Ronaldo is in right now. Reverse that statistic and its what most players would be happy with, but Ronaldo isn’t most players. Ronaldo constantly defies the laws of football physics – I mean literally as shown last night – if there is such a term. He is out of this world, a player who consistently beleaguers belief.

In a game of such importance and magnitude stacked with top players both young and old, Ronaldo took centre stage yet again. Taking the shine of these European nights away from Ronaldo is like trying to steal a toy from a toddler – almost difficult to achieve. The first he scored inside three minutes just tells you what you need to know about this great player. The illusive movement to elude the Juventus defenders was so key; Chiellini, one of the best defenders ever to grace the game just could not live with the jinky movement from Ronaldo. A pivot here and a classy outstretched leg there.

376AA95200000578-0-image-a-50_1471872569083
Is there an end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance?

Having spent most of career bamboozling defenders with the ball at his feet, he instead has the audacity to attempt it without – and successfully. They say with age comes wisdom and Ronaldo has certainly done just that in terms of adapting his game, he is no longer that marauding winger you enjoyed watching at Old Trafford for Manchester United or over the last few years at Madrid, he has now adapted his game to that legendary poacher – a striker who is always at the right place at the right time.

He has become football’s poacher supreme and much more, elevating the art of the penalty area like players such as Ruud Van Nistelrooy – a player Ronaldo played with during his young days at United – the Dutchman was a genius in the box, like a fox prowling at every opportunity and Ronaldo has effortlessly taken a leaf out of Van Nistelrooy’s book.

The contrast with fellow number 9 and former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuian was so vast. The Argentinian unable to beat Keylor Navas from point blank range at the other end, had rather a night to forget. Nonetheless, Higuian is a world-class striker. But he is not Ronaldo. The one-time magician of dribbles is now arguably the games most lethal finisher, scoring in each of his last 10 Champions League games. Mightily Impressive.

That was not all for Ronaldo’s night, he then assisted Marcelo’s goal as Real Madrid added the icing on the cake and put the gloss over a complete performance for the 11-time Champions League winners. It was atypical of the reformed Ronaldo. 32 goals of the last 37 have been directly scored by himself, with only 5 being assist for others. Call it what you want, Cristiano Ronaldo is self-made.

Yet again, the 50-goal mark for the season is in his sights and credit must go to Zinedine Zidane for the way he has deployed Ronaldo so sparingly this season. Gone are the days of Ronaldo playing almost every game both domestically and on the European front, now the Portuguese is rather unleashed when it matters most. Zidane has helped to convince Ronaldo that there is a sense in picking his battles to protect the body for bigger challenges.

1951560-41026685-2560-1440
The Portuguese maestro.

He will hope to add to his impressive total when Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but La Liga is not his primary focus right now. With Juventus all but dispatched, Ronaldo and co are almost a semi-final away from another Champions League final showpiece. A chance to make it a hat-trick of victories under the tutelage of Zidane. The French coach also familiar with the prestigious title in his own playing days. Yeah, there might be teams such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Barcelona – all dominating their respective leagues – but when it matters most you cannot count out Real Madrid, its like they step to yet another gear when the famous and illustrious Champions League music hits. It’s where Ronaldo is at his sparkling best at the grandest stage of them all.

We can truly and proudly say, we lived in a time of the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo.

Champions League Last 16 Draw Previews and Reaction.

Champions League Last 16 Draw Previews and Reaction.

Monday’s Champions League Last 16 draw threw up some intriguing match ups as five of the English clubs through to the knockout learned their fates. Chelsea who were the only English club to finish runners up in their respective groups were paired with La Liga leaders Barcelona, fellow Londoners Tottenham were paired with last years losing finalists Juventus while Manchester United will travel to Sevilla for the first leg of their last 16 tie.

hi-res-e50a98d92555d94fe7068155f6a52301_crop_north
Tottenham have drawn 2017 runners up Juventus in the last 16 of the Champions League.

City will travel to Basel while Liverpool were drawn with Portuguese outfit FC Porto. Probably the tie of the round saw last years winners Real Madrid paired with Paris Saint Germain. Bayern Munich who finished behind the French leaders were paired with Turkish outfit Besiktas who have impressed in the competition topping a group which included French champions Monaco, Besiktas and German’s surprise package of last season RB Leipzig. Italian side Roma complete the draw as they are paired with Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

Here is my reaction and previews to these mouth watering ties being played in February 2018 involving the English clubs, including probably the biggest of the lot, Real Madrid vs Paris Saint Germain:

Chelsea vs Barcelona

hi-res-e50a98d92555d94fe7068155f6a52301_crop_north
Andres Iniesta scored a dramatic late winner for Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in 2009.

After finishing runners up in their group, second to Roma, Chelsea were faced with the repercussions as they were paired with Barcelona once again. This match up has thrown up some frantic spectacles in recent years, probably the most memorable being Andres Iniesta’s dramatic winner on aggregate at Stamford Bridge in 2009, a game which had Didier Drogba sent off for his altercation with the official. Chelsea were on course for a successive Champions League semi-final with Manchester United until Iniesta broke their hearts with a spectacular strike in stoppage time. Barcelona then went to lift the trophy easily dispatching of Manchester United 2-0 in the final held in Rome.

Chelsea’s record against Barcelona

P W D L GF GA

Chelsea got their own back a few years later as they beat the 2011 champions on aggregate after an impressive showing at the Camp Nou. A  freak game which involved Messi uncharacteristically missing a penalty against the Bar and an off form Fernando Torres sealing the tie with Chelsea’s second goal. The blues then went on claim the trophy of their opponents in the final against Bayern Munich on their own turf.

Chelsea have arguably the most unfavourable tie matched up with Ernesto Valverde’s men in a week where Antonio Conte conceded his sides Premier League title ambitions have been brought to an end following their defeat to West Ham over the weekend.

DGd3j9KXUAA5gU9
Lionel Messi and co will pit themselves against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea in the last 16.

However, Barcelona have not been at their best this season despite being top of La Liga. Valverde has changed the style over at the Camp Nou which has only ignited some of the doubters over his appointment at the start of the season. Though Chelsea may feel, they can cause an upset in this tie; Valverde has vastly improved Barcelona’s defence, the time of shipping goals at a canter last season under Luis Enrique has been brought to an end by Valverde’s rigid style. Suarez’ form has suffered as a result, as well as Barca being heavily reliant on the brilliance of Lionel Messi than they’ve ever been.

The return of Ousmane Dembele from a long term injury could further boost Barcelona’s chances but Chelsea cannot be ruled out of this one if the 2012 result between these two is anything to go by.

This game is too close to call.

Key Men:

Barcelona: Lionel Messi

Chelsea: Eden Hazard

Real Madrid vs Paris Saint Germain

hi-res-e50a98d92555d94fe7068155f6a52301_crop_north
The last 16 draw through up a tantalising tie between last years winners Real Madrid and this seasons favourites Paris Saint Germain.

Probably the tie of the round.

Maybe, just maybe we will finally see just how good Paris Saint Germain really are as they are paired with last years winners and 12 time champions Real Madrid. Can Unai Emery’s French giants stop Real Madrid’s run to another Champions League glory. Who maybe causing the upset here? I doubt it would be PSG as they are looking a real force to be reckoned with scoring an incredible 25 times in the group stage. A Champions League record.

Over recent seasons, Paris Saint Germain have always fallen short of reaching the next level but this year they are tipped for greatness especially on the European stage, and that brings massive expectations on Unai Emery and his side to deliver. With the impeccable front three of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and probably the most exciting youngster right now in Europe, Kylian Mbappe. Few people would bet their mortgage that PSG would run out winners come the final in Kiev next year.

Despite Real Madrid’s shaky form this season, when you have five time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo on your side, you’re always bound to come up trumps. Zidane has proven a brilliant coach during his time at the helm, but how motivated are Real Madrid to try and match the lofty ambitions of last year, famously lifting the domestic and European double? The loss of Alvaro Morata and James Rodriguez have hit Zidane and his men hard this season, as there is a lack of quality to call up on when needed this season. January might see Real Madrid strengthen their squad though it may be difficult to add quality. This is the Champions League, a competition Real Madrid simply cannot be ruled out of.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke yet another Champions League record, scoring in each of Real Madrid’s six group stage matches.

Though what’s for certain, one of these giant clubs WILL have to relinquish their position in the competition in February. Just who could it be?

A fascinating spectacle to look forward to.

Juventus vs Tottenham

hi-res-94f663c361cc036ac017e915688556c7_crop_north
Paulo Dybala’s Juventus have been paired with Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16.

Another potential exciting tie on the cards.

Tottenham would have looked at the draw wanting to avoid the likes of Juventus and Bayern Munich but there’s the old saying; “If you wanna be the best, you gotta beat the best” and certainly, Juventus are in that category. Mauricio Pochettino would be licking his lips – albeit nervously – at the prospect of testing his side against the Italian giants and last years beaten finalists.

Juventus may not be the side of the past, and their period of dominance in the Serie A slowly and progressively looks to be coming to an end with the likes of Inter Milan and Napoli causing a stern challenge so far in the Italian league. Tottenham will feel they have got a chance in this one. With Harry Kane leading the line, Tottenham have every chance to prove themselves, though Juventus’ defence will be a brutal challenge for Pochettino and his side, plus the added quality of Gonzalo Higuain and fellow Argentinian hotshot Paulo Dybala, one of the most exciting young footballers in the game.

f595bbca87aa14_595bbca87aa51_thumb
Tottenham will be looking to cause another impressive upset as they face Juventus in the last 16.

This is a fascinating tie, if Tottenham can play the same way against Real Madrid a few weeks back, they would have every chance. However, this is the knockout stages where it is ‘do or die’ and Pochettino will be psyched up by the challenge; a challenge to prove that his Tottenham side are indeed worthy competitors amongst Europe’s best.

Key Men:

Juventus: Paulo Dybala

Tottenham: Harry Kane

Basel vs Manchester City

hi-res-e50a98d92555d94fe7068155f6a52301_crop_north
Raheem Sterling has been a surprise package in this seasons Champions League with 4 goals to his name in the competition.

Basel toppled Manchester United in the penultimate group game in November but now they find themselves facing off against their noisy neighbours Manchester City. Guardiola would be licking his lips at the prospect of going through to the next round with ease, but as United found out in their matches against Basel, they are no pushovers.

Manchester City are on fire right now, and you wouldn’t bet against them running away with this tie. However, this is the Champions League and there is no room for complacency. Basel have blown hot and cold when it comes to facing off against English opponents in recent years which leads us to question which Basel side will turn up once this tie kicks off in February.

basel-636470346168584224-858
Basel ran out 1-0 winners over Manchester United when the sides met in November.

Depending on where City are at domestically come February, you would back them to comfortably overcome this obstacle despite that.

Basel: Michael Lang

Manchester City:  Kevin De Bruyne

Sevilla vs Manchester United

skysports-paul-pogba-manchester-united-football-champions-league_4152176
Paul Pogba has proven integral to much of Manchester United’s play this season, his presence will prove vital come this tie in Feb.

Manchester United could have so easily drawn Bayern Munich, Juventus or Real Madrid in the last 16 had they not got their own way – but instead they will vie their chances against Sevilla.

While many fans will breathe a huge sigh of relief at what seems a relatively favourable draw, United will have to be wary of a side well versed in European football. Though, Sevilla have not enjoyed a comfortable season as of yet in the league despite sitting pretty in fifth. After their trouncing at the hands of Real Madrid recently, it gave fans of another indication of how hot and cold the side are blowing so far this season. Also, coach Eduardo Berizzo is battling cancer – a probable reason as to why Sevilla aren’t doing as well as they would like.

Sevilla do hold dangerous weapons in the arsenal which United would need to be wary of with players such as Joaquin Correa, Wissam Ben Yedder, Luis Muriel, Steven Nzonzi, Argentinian playmaker Ever Banega, former Manchester City wingers Jesus Navas and Nolito. These players could hold the key to their chances of overcoming Mourinho’s Manchester United.

sevilla - 15034327881040

Certainly, Mourinho and his men will fancy their chances although you would back the Portuguese coach to do thorough scouting and research on his Spanish opponents before the tie comes about in February and what’s for certain is United MUST keep Paul Pogba fit if will have any chance of progressing not only against Sevilla, but even further if they hold any ambitions reaching their first final since 2011.

Key Men:

Sevilla: Steven Nzonzi

Manchester United: Paul Pogba

FC Porto vs Liverpool

salah 59fdbaf82b3a7e8091000001
Mo Salah’s Liverpool will face off against Portuguese outfit FC Porto.

Liverpool scored a staggering 23 goals in the group stage, only French leaders Paris Saint Germain scored more (25). Klopp has got Liverpool enjoying the Champions League nights at Anfield once again, and who’s to say they can’t get past an impressive FC Porto and match it amongst the best in the quarter finals.

Like Manchester United, Liverpool would have been biting their nails at the prospect of being paired with giant outfits such as Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid who all finished second in their groups – instead they are paired with Portuguese giants FC Porto, who impressively topped the likes of RB Leipzig and Monaco to make it out into the knockout stages.

This might be the last on this list, but that doesn’t take away the fact that this tie could be a classic with both teams capable of attacking master classes. Though, I feel Liverpool will have too much for Porto.

FC Porto: Vincent Aboubakar

Liverpool: Mo Salah

Ousmane Dembele a Top Purchase by Barcelona; The Right Man to Replace Neymar.

Ousmane Dembele a Top Purchase by Barcelona; The Right Man to Replace Neymar.

Barcelona have completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund forward Ousmane Dembele for a club record fee.

The 20-year old France international signed a five-year contract. Dembele has been handed the squad number 11 previously worn by Neymar who joined Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee last month.

A Barcelona statement read:

“FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ousmane Dembele for 105million euros plus add ons. The player will sign a five-year deal and his buy out clause is set 400 million euros.”

Ousmane Dembele has been a priority target for Barcelona all summer, along with Liverpool’s Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho, as Barcelona are looking for reinforcements following the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record £198million. The deal for Dembele is the second most expensive transfer in history.

DGdMc6NWsAIxqBl
The departure of Neymar has left a gaping hole in the dressing room at Barcelona.

Talks for Dembele, who has been suspended from any club activity since the 10 August after he missed a training session without permission, had broken down after Barca refused to meet the clubs valuation for the player. An offer worth more than €100m was rejected two weeks ago, with Dortmund insisting the will not accept anything less than €150m for a player they signed the previous summer for a 10th of that cost from French outfit Rennes.

However, after three bids for Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho being rejected – the Spanish giants insisting they will return with a fourth bid – Barca instead opted to move forward with a deal for Dortmund forward Ousmane Dembele, with a deal worth an initial fee of £97m and add ons up to £38m.

ousmane-dembele-during-friendly-match-between-borussia-dortmund-and-wuppertaler-on-9th-july--2016-20160722155951-5847
Despite the huge fee, Ousmane Dembele is the ideal candidate to replace Neymar.

With the unexpected sale of Neymar to PSG, Barcelona are in desperate need of reinforcements, the reason for their desperate activity in the transfer window this summer. Other than Ousmane Dembele, since the sale of Neymar few weeks ago, Barcelona have been interested in Liverpool’s Coutinho, Jean Michaël Seri from French club Nice and PSG’s Angel Di Maria – with personal terms said to be agreed between the club and the Argentinian winger who played for Real Madrid in 2014. They have already secured the services of former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho from Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande for €40 million.

Barcelona are believed to be aiming for another two or three signings before the window closes within the next week. The purchase of Ousmane Dembele, though, represents very outstanding business from Barcelona despite the hefty fee. Considering today’s market, the extortionate prices and the potential ability of the player, Barcelona have found themselves a gem in Ousmane Dembele. This is a player with world class abilities as his debut season at Dortmund has shown. An out-an-out winger with devastating speed, brilliant dribbling abilities and a maturity beyond his tender years at 20-years old. He was the fulcrum of Dortmund’s attack last season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4PUXgWOrvM

While Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s news that he may as well be staying at the Westfalenstadion, is welcome news to Dortmund fans, the departure of Dembele is sure to worry Dortmund fans more than anything. They have invested in Dyanmo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko, but questions will be asked whether he can have the same impact as Dembele did.

Nonetheless, Aubameyang’s return of 31 goals in the Bundesliga last term would have been tough to replace. Aubameyang also played a huge part in Dembele’s adaptation to the side, acting as a big brother type figure to a player who was only 18 when he signed for BVB, and who had played less than a full season of senior football for Rennes. Reading in to his return of six goals in 22 Bundesliga games – respectable but not spectacular – without context, you might wonder just how Dembele would replace Neymar.

Check the other column, and you would see Dembele holds a further whopping 18 assists – Bundesliga and the Champions League combined – gives you what the French trickster is about. Check out his through ball for Aubameyang against Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup – start of season show-piece – a picture perfect through ball cutting open the Bayern Munich like something out of the parting of the Red Sea.

So, while keeping Aubameyang is a nice feeling for Dortmund, losing Dembele would be a devastating blow, a tough pill to swallow considering the massive amounts of ability he holds. To sell Dembele would mean Dortmund would have to start again, in terms of building again in the final third. There aren’t many footballers out there with the same talents as Dembele, that’s why arguably the biggest club in the World has come calling for his signature.

How Dortmund deal with this loss is one thing. How Dembele deals with the move to Barcelona is another, considering the weight of expectation on his shoulders lifts five times more. No doubt about it, he is a direct replacement for Neymar. Yes, Neymar, a statement that is sure to send shivers down his spine. Add on top of that, he will be lining up with the World’s best in Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. What a difference a year makes. Dembele finds himself on the cusp of a career changing move.

German football expert, Lars Pollman feels Dembele is making the right move for his career:

“After correctly deciding an intermediate step would be best for his career as he was ready to leave Rennes last summer, there’s little doubt that Dembele is now ready to take on any challenge.”

And why wouldn’t he be ready? As Pollman alluded to, Dembele is in charge of his own destiny, if he is able to cause as much havoc in the German Bundesliga, then who’s to say he won’t cause much more with Lionel Messi and co? Dembele could be the man to close the massive bridge that is separating Real Madrid and Barcelona in terms of squad quality.

ousmane-dembele-during-friendly-match-between-borussia-dortmund-and-wuppertaler-on-9th-july--2016-20160722155951-5847
Is Dembele ready to take another huge step in his career?

Whether Barca go back in for Coutinho once the signing of Dembele is sealed is another matter. It is reported according to Sky Sources, that Philippe Coutinho hopes the signing of Dembele does not hamper his chances of a move the Camp Nou as well but Sky Sports expert Guillem Balague has stated in his Sky Sports Column that Barcelona will attempt to sign Coutinho one again, after Dembele has completed his move.

With that said, Dembele thinks big. Rather than worrying about the possibility of losing his place in the squad for next summers World Cup if things are tricky at the Camp Nou, he’s probably thinking if he clicks to devastating effect with Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi, Didier Deschamps will have a hard time leaving him out of the line-up come next June.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde is thrilled to have landed Dembele and stated:

“He is a player who guarantees us depth, something that we have lost and that we need.”

Dembele adds a youthful exuberance to a Barcelona that is starting to age. Busquets, Iniesta, Messi, Suarez and Pique all find themselves around the age of their 30s. The addition of Dembele will provide Barcelona with the youthful spark they have missed. Yet Dembele has rarely shied from the fact that he can see himself succeeding with Barca in time, and maybe now is the perfect moment.

I for one cannot wait to see Dembele in a Barcelona shirt, forget about the price tag. Dembele will be worth every outlay Barca pay Dortmund. At the tender age of 20, Ousmane Dembele is ready for the big time, ready to fill the gap left by Neymar. They do say, ‘If you’re good enough, you are old enough’.

Major Transfer Deals Most Likely to Happen This Summer. (Part 2)

Major Transfer Deals Most Likely to Happen This Summer. (Part 2)

Now lets take a look at Part 2 of our expected major transfer deals to happen this summer:

Alexis Sanchez – Manchester City/Bayern Munich/Chelsea

How Arsenal fans would rue Alexis Sanchez leaving the Emirates this summer; lets face it, the Chilean forward deserves more than what he is getting at the club. A player of his calibre should be winning major honours but he won’t do that as long as he remains at Arsenal. Sanchez has reportedly stated himself, he is frustrated at the lack of ambition and drive shown by his fellow team mates and the club. Don’t be surprised to see him walk out on the club in the summer with Manchester City and Bayern Munich believed to be sniffing down his neck with the former the most likely destination due to his past ties with Pep Guardiola at Barcelona.

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Alexis Sanchez has enjoyed another fruitful season in front of goal.

Nonetheless, individually Sanchez has enjoyed another great season in front of goal taking his all time tally Premier League tally for the club to 50 goals. He is player who will not at stop at nothing to get a victory – a characteristic shown on many occasions this season when he throws a strop or at his fellow team-mates.

Maybe the time he starts winning the trophies he so well desires could be away from Arsenal, who knows?

Alexandre Lacazette – Arsenal/Atletico Madrid/Liverpool

lacazette
Lacazette has revelled up front for Lyon in Ligue 1 for three consecutive seasons.

A player who has been on top of his game for a long while now. A player that has carried the weight of Lyon’s world on his own shoulders for a number of seasons. Step forward, Alexandre Lacazette.

I am very surprised he has not moved to a Champions League club already despite his goalscoring prowess that only a few players in Europe can match. Lacazette has encompassed rising from the academy ranks to becoming one of Europe’s most coveted goalscorers. He is one of only four players – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane – to have hit the 20 goal mark in one of Europe’s top five leagues to three successive seasons.

Lacazette has notched 126 times for Lyon in 274 games. When one considers he broke into the first team as a winger under former coach Claude Puel, its even more impressive 110 goals in 182 games since the switch to becoming the main man upfront, after the iconic Lisandro Lopez moved on. In those last three campaigns, the 25 year old has notched 88 goals in 128 (73 in 96 in Ligue 1 alone). Astonishing.

So its natural Europe’s finest should be interested in his services, and a move to the Premier League or even La Liga is on the cards this summer with Arsenal and Atletico Madrid believed to be lining up a big money move for the French hotshot.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – Manchester United/Chelsea

Monaco v Tottenham Hotspur - UEFA Champions League - Group E - Stade Louis II
Tiemoue Bakayoko is wanted by both Manchester United and Chelsea this summer.

A player central to the successes of Monaco this season – I mean literally. Tiemoue Bakayoko has been a massive presence along with Fabinho in the centre of Monaco’s midfield throughout the season. His power, ball-playing ability and defensive awareness has seen him gather interest from top clubs in Europe such as Manchester United and Chelsea all soaring for his services this summer. Blues boss Antonio Conte sees the French international and his fellow countryman N’Golo Kante as the perfect partnership in Chelsea’s midfield.

Chelsea are confident of sealing a deal for Bakayoko but have Manchester United to contend with for his signature. It is believed Bakayoko would prefer a move to Old Trafford, but only if they are in the Champions League next season.

However, the Premier League Champions Chelsea, have been leading the chase for the Monaco midfielder, who they want to make an early summer signing with an offer of £30million.

Benjamin Mendy – Manchester United/Manchester City

skysports-benjamin-mendy-raheem-sterling_3928924
Benjamin Mendy has been integral to Monaco’s success this season, expect a big move for him this summer..

Another player who has flourished this season for Monaco, making a huge contribution to the team’s formidable attacking force, French left-back Benjamin Mendy. The defender has been a major outlet on the left for Monaco with his marauding runs and devastating deliveries, he has contributed more assists across the league and Champions League than any other defender in Europe – more than Marcelo of Real Madrid and David Alaba of Bayern Munich. The 22 year-old has been instrumental for Leonardo Jardim’s men who are on course to win their first Ligue 1 title in 17 years.

Benjamin Mendy is now being touted by Manchester United, Man City and Chelsea because of his performances this season. It is understood he is now valued at around twice the figure Monaco paid Marseille for his services – a sum of £12million pounds – and his of interest to all of the top 6 teams. However, sources close to the player have told Sky Sports that Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte are the most keen to secure Mendy’s services.

All 3 managers have cause to search for a new left-back especially City manager Pep Guardiola who has had to rely on the services of Gael Clichy – a player most certainly expected to be part of Guardiola’s summer exodus as the former Barcelona coach looks to build the Etihad club in his own image and Mendy fits perfectly in his plans. City are in desperate need of a major reshuffle in defence which could mean Guardiola going all out for Benjamin Mendy.

Expect there to be a major bidding war for the French international left-back this summer.

Andrea Belotti – Manchester United/Chelsea/Arsenal

skysports-andrea-belotti-torino-serie-a_3866966
Andrea Belotti has enjoyed a breakout season at Italian outfit Torino.

Torino president claimed to have rejected a £56m bid from Arsenal for striker Andrea Belotti. A man who has enjoyed a fantastic breakout season in Serie A, has attracted interest from a host of top clubs in Europe. Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with Belotti the past couple of months and his stats shows why.

After failing to score in his first 10 games for Torino following a move summer move in 2015, a goal against Bologna that year sparked a major turnaround. Since then, the Italian has never looked back, he has scored 28 goals in 42 appearances for both club and country. He has also created 33 goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates – more than any other centre-forward in Italy. His speed unsettles defences, while his strength and determination can turn seemingly lost causes into openings for his team.

His €90 million release clause would be sure to drive out clubs trying to signing the player; however, the Italian striker has dismissed claims his buy-out clause reaches that figure.

Michael Keane – Everton/Manchester United

Hull City v Burnley - Premier League
Will Michael Keane make a return back to his boyhood club this summer?

Manchester United are interested are interested in re-signing Burnley defender Michael Keane, according to Sky Sources.

Keane, 24, left United to join Burnley permanently in 2015 for £2m, four years after he signed a professional contract at Old Trafford. United are understood to have a 25% sell on clause standing from the deal, meaning they would be due a quarter of any fee paid to re-sign Keane back. No talks have been made regarding a potential deal yet, but Mourinho is a keen admirer of the centre-back after an impressive campaign for Sean Dyche’s steady Burnley side.

Everton, Tottenham and Liverpool are all believed to be interested in Keane, who has just one year left on his current contract – which could prompt Burnley to cash in this summer.

Ross Barkley – Tottenham/Arsenal

skysports-ross-barkley-everton_3931704
Ross Barkley has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract at Goodison.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman earlier this month gave Ross Barkley a deadline to sign a new deal at Goodison Park. Barkley has just one more year on his current deal but has so far refused to put pen to paper on a new deal as he considers his future at the club.

Tottenham are amongst a number of clubs thought to be monitoring Barkley’s situation and Koeman stated Everton are not prepared to wait for until the start of next season for a decision from the England international.

Everton are already on a look out for his potential replacement if he was to leave this summer with Ronald Koeman said to be interested in Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ajax’ attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen, though the former has stated he is happy to stay at the Liberty stadium beyond the summer.

Whatever Barkley decides this summer, he’s got to make the right call because his immediate future and supposed ‘potential’ is on the line… No pressure.

Leonardo Bonucci – Manchester City/Chelsea/Barcelona

FBL-ITA-SERIEA-JUVENTUS-VERONA
Could Leonardo Bonucci be on his way out of Juventus this summer?

According to widespread reports, Barcelona are trying to coax Leonardo Bonucci to the Nou Camp. Spanish media Outlet, Don Balon reckon the Catalans view the Italian defender as the ideal candidate to bolster their back line. It has been suggested Barcelona will move for the defender if Juventus are victorious in their pursuit of the Champions League trophy against Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid.

The Premier League’s elite have also been heavily linked with Bonucci. Chelsea were desperate to secure his services last summer, but Juventus knocked back their advances. However, other reports such as the Telegraph say the Blues are still in the hunt for the defender – along with Manchester United and City.

Kyle Walker – Manchester City

untitled
Various reports have suggested a fall out between Kyle Walker and Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino. Could he be on his way out?

Reports in the Daily Mail suggest Chelsea and Manchester City are both interested in the services of Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker amid growing rumours in various other news outlets that there has been some unrest between the England international and Tottenham coach Mauricio Pochettino behind the scenes at White Hart Lane, as a result, Walker has been recently left out of the Tottenham first 11 in key games such as the North London derby against Arsenal.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was already set to slap a significant price tag on the 26-year-old if he is to sell to a direct rival. But a potential tug-of-war between City and Chelsea will drive the price ahead of what promises to be a hectic summer for Kyle Walker.

Though, Tottenham are believed to be relaxed about the situation seeing as Walker is contracted to the club until 2021. Pep Guardiola’s City face an uphill summer as the Spanish coach aims to revamp his squad for the 2017/18 upcoming season and Kyle Walker could be central to those plans as Guardiola is desperate need for a new full-back after Argentine City legend Zabaleta confirmed he would be leaving the club in the summer. Guardiola sees Walker as the ideal replacement and believes the England international has all the ingredients for the perfect Guardiola-type full-back.

Bernardo Silva – Manchester United

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Bernardo Silva has been one of the many young shining stars in an outstanding Monaco side.

Another rising star among the brilliant crop of players unearthed and Ligue 1 champions Monaco. Portuguese playmaker Bernardo Silva has been hugely impressive this season, his understanding with his fellow forwards such as Kylian Mbappe, Falcao and Thomas Lemar has been the bedrock of an exciting and devastating attack as we’ve ever seen from any Monaco team.

Silva has expressed his dreams of moving to a “top club” in future. The £70million rated winger helped his side capture the Ligue 1 title after his side’s 2-0 win over St Etienne. Monaco could be hit by a mass exodus this summer with Benjamin Mendy, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Thomas Lemar all being coveted by Europe’s top clubs this summer.

Much of Bernardo Silva’s future does hinge upon the rest of his team-mates as it is looking massively unlikely most of the top stars at the club will be seeking greener pastures this summer. Jose Mourinho sees Bernardo Silva as the ideal signing to boost his attacking options for next season. United have struggled in front of goal this season, and Mourinho has made plans to solve that issue with a World Class striker and another attacking midfielder being added to his shopping list this summer.

Silva does hold Champions League ambitions, and Mourinho will try everything in his locker to ensure he is triumphant against Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday to match those ambitions.

Radja Nainggolan – Manchester United/Chelsea

Radja-Nainggolan-564143
Nainggolan has been a key figure in Roma’s renaissance over the past few years.

According to Sky Sports News HQ, Manchester United have entered the race to sign Belgium and Roma. Sky Sources understand that Mourinho is looking to trump Antonio Conte to the signature of the 29-year-old, one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe.

It is understood United’s interest is at an early stage and no deal has been agreed with AS Roma. Last summer, Chelsea made several offers for the Belgian powerhouse to join Stamford Bridge, a bid which was rumoured to be in the region of £34million.

Since joining Roma permanently in 2014, following a loan spell at the Stadio Olimpico during the 2013/14 campaign, Nainggolan has become a vital part of the resurgence of Roma in recent years, making 120 appearances, scoring 26 goals in the process. Outside of Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera, Mourinho is short of options in the middle, with Marouane Fellaini reportedly in talks with Turkish side Trabzonspor about a summer transfer and Michael Carrick turning 36 by the time the new season kicks off, Mourinho will be looking for ideal candidates to stock up his midfielder especially if they have ambitions to successfully compete in the Champions League next season.

Major Transfer Deals Most Likely to Happen This Summer. (Part 1)

As another exciting and dramatic Premier League season draws to a close, all eyes will be drawn to what will be an interesting spectacle in the Summer Transfer window. Yes, the football on the pitch will be over, but the action off it continues. Feast your eyes on what is likely to be the most captivating Summer window yet with clubs such as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, and the La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona sure to spend buck loads of cash.

untitled
After a difficult first season for Guardiola at Man City, he will certainly be dipping into his mega-bucks transfer funds this summer.

With Chelsea and Tottenham running away with it in a two-horse race, both Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho will be slightly disappointed they have been able not to match the ambitions of both the London clubs. Expect both coaches to pull out big cheques this summer to strengthen their squads for the new season. Arsenal on the other hand, are facing an uncertain summer as the future of Arsene Wenger continues to be in question, will he still be at the helm this summer? Reports are emerging that the Frenchman will sign a two-year extension to his current deal.

And what about in La Liga? Barcelona themselves will be facing a hectic transfer window as they not only will be looking to strengthen their squad but will be on the hunt for a new man at the helm to replace Luis Enrique. Will Real Madrid be looking for another Galactico? Eden Hazard maybe? Kylian Mbappe?

p160910-097-liverpool_leicester
Could Eden Hazard become the next Galactico signing at the Santiago Bernabeu?

There are a lot of questions, debates and uncertainty that will need to be answered as we enter into the summer transfer window. Nonetheless, it will be an enthralling summer filled with transfer surprises and of course, a number of mega-buck signings.

But which of these major signings can we expect? Lets take a look at Part 1 of the expected major signings to happen this summer:

Antoine Griezmann – Manchester United

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Could Antoine Griezmann be joining up with his French team-mate Paul Pogba at Old Trafford?

A transfer saga we are tired of seeing on our front page of the newspaper, our social media platforms, or even on the news but its a potential transfer that is sure to light up the Barclays Premier League if Manchester United succeed in getting the deal over the line. Lets face it, Antoine Griezmann has grown into one of the biggest stars in World Football. Once considered too small a player to make it on the biggest stage during his early stages at Real Sociedad, the French superstar has defied his earlier critics with some outstanding performances for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone. It is now 3 successive seasons Griezmann has surpassed the feat of 20 goals in all competitions in a calendar season. The current season hasn’t been as good a season as we would have expected from Atletico but they are on course to compete in the Champions League again next season by fighting for a 3rd spot with Sevilla.

Antoine Griezmann just maybe the calibre signing United need right now, with the uncertain future Zlatan Ibrahimovic after his significant injury , Jose Mourinho is in desperate need of a top quality striker and Griezmann fits the bill. United’s record in front of goal this season has been nothing short dismal plus with Ibrahimovic out, they only have Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney to call upon… Mourinho is in desperate need of Griezmann’s services. If that is to happen, Champions League football must be secured for next season.

Romelu Lukaku – Chelsea/Manchester United

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Who will Romelu Lukaku be joining this summer?

Reports in The Sun Newspaper are stating that Romelu Lukaku could turn his back on a potential deal to rejoin Chelsea due to his worry about fitting into the style of Antonio Conte. It is believed the Belgian forward is torn between going back to Stamford Bridge and the prospect of moving to Manchester United. Lukaku, who is on course to finish the Premier league season with the Golden Boot with 24 goals to his name with the season drawing to a close, desperately wants to play Champions League football next season. While that luxury may not yet be certain at Old Trafford, the prospect of joining Chelsea might be Lukaku’s only real option.

Chelsea’s sporting director, Michael Emenalo will behind the move if Lukaku is to return to Stamford bridge and with Diego Costa surely on his way to China, Conte will be looking for an ideal replacement; however, the £80million asking price Everton have slapped on the Belgian may hinder Chelsea’s chances to make a move on the Belgian and the may swing their attentions elsewhere, with Alvaro Morata at Real Madrid likely to become available in the summer. Wherever Romelu Lukaku could end up this summer, lets just hope he makes the right move for his career. Champions League football may have to wait a little longer…

James Rodriguez – Manchester United/Chelsea/Juventus

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049

According to Sky Sports La Liga expert, Guillem Balague, Manchester United are clear favourites to sign Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez. The Columbian superstar and United manager Jose Mourinho both share the same agent – Jorge Mendes. It is believed that James is being touted by many of the top clubs in Europe but he sees United as the ideal club for the next stage in his career.

According to Colombian Radio Station RCN, James Rodriguez has agreed a deal in principle with Manchester United. It is also believed, James and his agent Jorge Mendes, have met with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to discuss the players discontent with his situation at the Bernabeu.

Rodriguez is frustrated at the lack of game time being handed to him by Zidane at the club, despite that, he has reached double figures in terms of goals for the season in Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Granada couple weeks ago – a testament to his qualities which came to light at the 2014 World Cup, the reason Real Madrid invested so heavily on him straight after the tournament.

James is one of Europe’s most coveted talents and he obviously feels he won’t be able to reach his potential on the bench at Real Madrid, and of course he is right. The Columbian is just too good to be languishing on the sidelines, but how will he fit into the starting XI at United or Chelsea? Another question we’ll have to find out in this transfer window.

Alvaro Morata – Chelsea/Arsenal/Manchester United

Alvaro-Morata-612417
Could Morata be on his way to Stamford Bridge?

Another player on the cusp of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu. Another forward too good to be languishing on the bench. Alvaro Morata is in desperate need of a change of scenery; observing from the bench at Real Madrid just won’t do him any favours. Morata has notched an impressive 21 goals this season, 15 La Liga goals in 11 starts, an astonishing return despite being no.2 to Karim Benzema – a testament to the quality he adds to the team as Real Madrid continue to battle for trophies both on the European and Domestic front.

According to Sky Sports La Liga expert Guillem Balague, Alvaro Morata wants to see what happens with the situation at Chelsea regarding the potential sale of Diego Costa – there is a choice to be made between Morata and Lukaku, the first one preferred by Conte and the second preferred by the club. There is a debate as to who would suit Chelsea more, it is believed that Morata would be the better option tactically. His movement, understanding of the coach and his intelligence leading the line may swing Chelsea towards the signing of the Spanish international.

There haven’t been many reports about links with Arsenal but why not Wenger go for the young forward? Arsenal are in desperate need of a top-quality forward and Morata certainly fits the bill. Wenger would be wise to move for him too.

Eden Hazard – Real Madrid?

Premier League title winner Hazard is happy at Stamford Bridge but will he be tempted by a move to the Santiago Bernabeu?

A potential transfer deal that would truly damage not only Chelsea fans but the Premier League neutrals also. Eden Hazard has become one of the most exciting players to watch over the years with his unerring pieces of skill and ability on the ball. If Hazard was to move to La Liga this summer, we will be losing of the Premier League’s most prized assets. We all talk about Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar but Hazard should be breathed in the same class.

Various reports have emerged that Hazard is more than happy to stay with Chelsea one more season as the club return into the Champions League after a year out. The Belgian superstar has two Premier League trophies to his cabinet already and he will be dreaming of a Champions League medal. Hazard would need to decide this summer, which club can match his ambitions this summer? A move to the mighty Real Madrid who are on course for yet another European gong to their decorated Champions League cabinet or stay it out at Chelsea to see what happens. Hazard does look like he is staying at the Bridge next season but when a transfer deal involves Real Madrid, you just never know…

David De Gea – Real Madrid

Will David De Gea finally get the move he desires this summer?

Twice over the past three years Real Madrid had failed in their attempts to secure the signature of Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea. This summer may just be the year Madrid finally get their man. Widespread reports have suggested that the Bernabeu club will go all out for the Spanish goalkeeper once the transfer window reopens.

A goalkeeper who has grown into one of the World’s best after a difficult start to life at Old Trafford under Sir Alex, he has matured and grown considerably since then. His confidence and belief in his own outstanding abilities his biggest attributes over the years at United.

It is reported in various news reports that United are trying everything they can to offer De Gea a contract with only two years left on his current deal, however, it seems as though De Gea has his heart set on a move back to his homeland.

If that was to occur, Jose Mourinho will have a tough job on his hands trying to replace an incredible asset – a goalkeeper worthy winning points on his own, a goalkeeper that can win you a Premier League title in fact.

Kasper Schmeichel – Manchester United

Could Kasper Schmeichel follow in the footsteps of his father in succeeding at Old Trafford?

This deal could be in direct response to the above. If David De Gea was to leave Old Trafford – it is believed – according to Sky Sources that Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel could be the potential heir to the Spanish goalkeeper’s throne. And why not? Schmeichel represents a steady replacement for David De Gea, if you look at his form and abilities over the past few years. Schmeichel’s heroics last season in Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title triumph and his performances in the Champions League this season has catapulted him to greater heights and he could find himself at a top club like Manchester United before the start of next season.

Bearing in mind, his father used to be an Old Trafford legend. Prophecy?

Virgil Van Dijk – Man City/Liverpool/Chelsea

Will Virgil Van Dijk remain at St Mary’s next season?

Southampton manager Claude Puel stated he is adamant Virgil Van Dijk will be staying at Southampton beyond this summer. Clearly the French coach does not his board well, in over the past 6 years Southampton have received reasonable money for star players for example; Sadio Mane, Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne Dejan Lovren have all been sold by Southampton for large sums (mostly to Liverpool) and that won’t change this summer regarding the future of Van Dijk.

Strong, agile, steady and solid. All you need in a top class defender plus he great ability on the ball is a huge asset to the way Southampton play, no wonder why they have sorely missed his presence at the back for most of the season.

Expect clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool to submit high bids for the Dutch international who is valued at an incredible £50million pounds. Southampton will gladly accept that kind of offer with open arms.

Marco Verratti – Barcelona/Bayern Munich

Marco Verratti has stated he likes the PSG project at this moment in time, but a move to the Camp Nou could sway his decision.

The ideal successor to Andres Iniesta’s throne at Barcelona. The Catalan club have been trying to sign the Marco Verratti for a while now, and it easy to see why. The diminutive Italian seems the perfect fit for Barcelona’s midfield that you’d think he’d been moulded from the earth found under the Camp Nou pitch. It’s quite unerring how good a match this would be if Verratti were to seek pastures new and move to Barcelona this summer.

Marco Verratti is a playmaker extraordinaire. Capable of dictating play, threading balls through the eye of the needle – into feet, onto runs. He can run with the ball, and while he’s no Neymar, he certainly has the ability to dribble past his opponents with ease. More than his ability to attack, he is a great defender. A shield to the back four at PSG – tenacious in the tackle, and his zeal for dispossessing his opponents. The perfect man to replace the great Andres Iniesta. I ain’t a Barcelona fan at heart, but I would be very excited at the prospect of watching Verratti dominating La Liga for years to come.

Bayern Munich are believed to be interested in the Italian’s services also – a perfect replacement for Xabi Alonso who is retiring at the end of the season. Though his ability would make him a perfect fit for Barcelona.

Wonderful player.
