Croatia are through to the last 16 of the World Cup after a stunning and rampant 3-0 victory over Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Nizhny Novgorod – a victory which leaves Argentina in serious danger of exiting the group stage.
On a night where Argentina were in desperate need of inspiration from Lionel Messi much like Portugal have encountered in the recent group stage fixtures potentially in with a chance of qualifying thanks to the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo. Argentina and Jorge Sampaoli needed something similar from their magician but it wasn’t to be as Croatia expertly stifled much Argentina’s Messi-led attacks hassling and harrying the Barcelona man before he could even reach the 18 yard box.
It was a plan that was executed to perfection. While Messi was unable to lead his nation to victory, it was another man who the onus fell on to come up with the goods when Croatia needed him most and that man was Real Madrid’s very own magician Luka Modric. A mesmerizing performance from a man who’s contributions to the game very strangely goes under the radar. The silent magician amongst a Real Madrid team full of superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, his midfield partner Toni Kroos, Marcelo and Karim Benzema.
Luka Modric is the best midfielder in the world and has been over the last few years. Full stop.
But tonight, Modric’s performance was worldwide and the Croatian can finally get the praise he deserves. Much has been made of Croatia’s chances as the ‘dark horses’ in this World Cup, and a man finally capable of leading a team on his own – I mean, literally, he is the captain of his country. Modric maybe the silent killer amongst the Real Madrid team but for his beloved nation Croatia, he is the leading light, the main man, the captain. Against Argentina, Modric’s performance overshadowed what was supposed to be a magic night for Lionel Messi and co but the Real Madrid man stole the limelight with a performance for the ages.
Croatia are a team filled with similar talents and experience: Ivan Rakitic, Ivan Perisic, Mario Mandzukic to name a few. Plus there’s the up and coming footballers such as Modric’s Real Madrid team-mate Mateo Kovacic, Ante Rebic who plays his club football in Germany for Eintracht Frankfurt, Marcelo Brozovic who plays for Inter Milan. These are players tasked with filling the void which will be left by Luka Modric when he eventually retires. They may have to wait a while because if Modric can perform like he did tonight, Croatia may just need him again for the next Euros at least.
Modric was the better of the famous No.10s on show between Argentina and Croatia.
33 in a couple months, Modric has shown time and time again why he should be placed in the same bracket as the Xavi’s and the Iniesta’s and rightly so. On Thursday night, he was head and shoulders above everyone else along with Ivan Rakitic as players masterfully dominated Argentina’s midfield. When they had the ball, they were mesmirizing, constantly dissecting an Argentina defence who were awful night. It was as if Modric and Rakitic had relived the biblical miracle of Moses parting the Red Sea. It was a joy to watch. Have a look at the pass Modric threaded for Rebic when he blazed over the bar, like knife through butter. Truly wonderful.
Not to forget the second goal which all but ended Argentina’s faint hopes. All but ended Messi’s desperation to finally lead out his team to World Cup glory after their suffering four years ago at the hands of Germany in Brazil. When Modric picked up the ball outside of the box, you knew he would try and find that little yard of space granting him the opportune moment to put Argentina to the sword and that he did. Majestic.
What a performance from Modric. Forget Ronaldo for a moment – as much as he would despise it – much of Real Madrid’s European success over the last few years has been because of the brilliance of Luka Modric. His defensive contributions, his work of the ball and the ability to find pockets of space in the middle of the park to hurt the opposition; that he did to devastating effect.
It will be interesting to see how Croatia fare for the rest of the tournament now they are through to the knockout stages, if Modric and co are gonna perform like that then you cannot take away the fact that this summer maybe Croatia’s opportunity to shine – their opportunity to prove that they are worth those ‘dark horse’ plaudits. Luka Modric will be central to those lofty ambitions. Magnificent performer.
The first round of this summers World Cup 2018 in Russia provided plenty of excitement, lots of goals, controversy, stand-out performers and well, own goals but what have we learned from the Tournament so far?
The Hosts are Enjoying Themselves
The Hosts – Russia – find themselves into the next round of their tournament after their 3-1 victory over Egypt.
Russia roared to a 3-1 victory over Egypt keeping their perfect start to the 2018 World Cup in-tact. After their rampant 5-0 victory Saudi Arabia on the opening day, the hosts are impressing not only their own fans but the neutrals also. It remains to be seen what they’ll do once the knockout stages comes to the fore in a few weeks time but its clear Russia are laying down marker. Declared the worst nation heading into the tournament after their poor form but they have put those tags to bed with two brilliant performances. Whoever they get in the next round last-16, however difficult it may be, just know that Russia won’t go down without a fight.
World Cup 2018 wide open
Germany endured an opening day defeat against Mexico.
What a roller coaster ride the World Cup has served us already. Heavy favorites Germany, Spain, Brazil and Argentina all failed to win the opening game of the tournament which leaves us to question how they will fare for the rest of the group stage. Germany’s defeat to Mexico must have been a tough one to take for Joachim Low and his men, but they have to admit they were soundly beaten by a team who will be brimming with confidence after that impressive performance. Germany face a difficult and resolute Sweden side next who will also be filled with confidence after their opening game win against South Korea.
At all costs, Germany must be victorious or else we could be faced with the possibility of a knockout stage without the mighty Germans – the reigning World Champions. Wow. Who can imagine that? Brazil, Spain and Argentina are all in desperate need of victories and these next few days could prove pivotal as to how the knockout could shape out once it begins. France were victorious in their opening game but at the expense of an underwhelming performance against Australia, if they are to harbor hopes of lifting the famous trophy, they must improve fast.
Mexico could be the surprise package
Mexico put in a brilliant performance against reigning champions Germany, could they be the surprise package?
What a performance. If you watched Mexico’s victory over mighty Germany, you would have thought Mexico were the reigning champions. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare for the rest of the group stages but you don’t put in a performance like that against Germany and not mean business. Columbia were the surprise package of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and Mexico just might be the unexpected dark horses throughout the tournament. Hirving Lozano, Carlos Vela, Javier Hernandez, Hector Herrera, Andres Guardado and co. Mexico find themselves with an embarrassment of riches in their squad. Just how far can they go if they continue to perform like they did against Germany. Ones to watch.
Slow Starts for the World Stars
Messi endured a difficult start to the tournament against Iceland.
At the start of the tournament we listed the superstar big names that would be hoping to assist their nations in gracing themselves with the World Cup trophy. But on the evidence of the opening fixtures, only one of them turned up in full force and that’s Cristiano Ronaldo who picked up yet another hat-trick – his 51st – against Spain last Friday. Portugal may not be many fans cup of teas to lift the trophy come the eve of July 15th but if Ronaldo produces masterclasses like the one he gave on Friday who’s to say Portugal can’t upset the odds once again after their unlikely Euro 2016 victory.
However, his fellow stars Neymar, Messi, Lewandowski, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann all endured underwhelming starts to their World Cup campaigns with all harboring ambitions of leading their nations to World Cup glory. Messi and Neymar most of all have the weight of their respective nations on their fashionable shoulders and their performances will have to vastly improve if those ambitions are to be fulfilled. The latter may find that a wee bit difficult after the Brazilian superstar limped out of training on Tuesday evening. Could this be another disappointing World Cup for Neymar? He cannot afford to have that on his resume, Brazil desperately need him.
Group H May Pull Up Some Surprises
Columbia suffered a shock opening game defeat to Japan.
If you hadn’t noticed, Group H is the most evenly balanced group of all at this summers tournament. All the nations are all perceived as underdogs or dark horses as you may like to call them. Japan, Columbia, Senegal and Poland all have the ability to hurt any of the top nations on their day. But which two did you predict to go through of paper? It was most likely Columbia and Poland right? Well, you may have to reconsider those predictions after Tuesdays results.
Japan and Senegal, two of the unlikely sources in the group all enjoyed a fruitful start to the competition – the latter being the first African side in the tournament to pick up three points – which has added a much interesting scenario to Group H, do not sleep on this group. It may just surprise you.
Harry Kane Means Business.. Put Those ‘World Class’ debates to Bed Now
Kane scored an emphatic winning goal against Tunisia to dig England out of an all too similar major tournament opening game hole.
‘Kane is World Class’, ‘Kane is not World Class yet’, ‘Kane needs to win trophies to become World Class’. These ‘World class debates surrounding Harry Kane has become all too boring now, lets just put this case to bed. Harry Kane is amongst one of the best strikers in the world right now and his heroics against Tunisia on Monday night shows that the Tottenham man means business this summer. This World Cup may just be the opportunity for Harry Kane to make his stamp in the history books, he may just be the man to lead England to glory, he has the quality doesn’t he? A man can only dream. Well, his beloved clubs mantra ‘Dare to Dream’ says it all.
Go on son !
Russia’s ‘James Rodriguez’?
CSKA Moscow’s Aleksander Golovin has massively impressed so far for Russia.
Remember when a certain young James Rodriguez lit up the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and got himself a dream move to mighty Real Madrid as soon as Columbia’s impressive run came to an end? Finishing top scorer with 6 goals to boot? Well, we may just have another version in Russia’s playmaker Aleksander Golovin. 2 games played for this man, and he has already lightened up the tournament with his rampant performances for his nation. If Russia are to dream of going far in their own soil this summer, this man will be key to their ambitions. Silky on the ball, brave, he has the vision, the panache and to cap it off, the set piece brilliance scoring Russia’s fifth goal against Saudi Arabia. No wonder why clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United and Juventus are all touting his services.
You may not have heard of the name before the tournament begun. But you will before the summer is out. What a player.
The World Cup 2018 in Russia is upon us, and much talking points, debates and issues have sprung as to who can make an impression in the tournament and most significantly, who will come out on top when the final on July 15th comes around.
While much intrigue will be on who has the capabilities to claim the prestigious trophy, what about the personal honor of finishing top scorer of a World Cup, we already know the famous players who have had the privilege of such acclaim – great players like Miroslav Klose and the Brazilian Ronaldo, but which player will mark their name in the history books this summer?
Here are the list of top contenders hoping to claim the golden boot trophy:
Lionel Messi, (Argentina)
The weight of the world will be on Lionel Messi’s shoulders.
One of the greatest players ever to grace the game – Lionel Messi. This summers tournament will place Messi once again in the spotlight, with the weight of the world on his shoulders – not just Argentina – but the whole world will want to see whether Messi can grace a major international tournament just like his counterpart Diego Maradona once did. Coach Jorge Sampaoli earlier in the year stated that “Lionel Messi has seen the world cup become ‘a revolver put to his head’ with his nation failing a many occasions such as the last World Cup finishing runners up after Mario Gotze’s late winner. Messi controversially won the golden ball four years ago but this summer he’ll be hoping to win that, the golden boot and more importantly the prestigious World Cup trophy.
Cristiano Ronaldo, (Portugal)
This may be Ronaldo’s last major international tournament – can he bow out on another high?
Cristiano Ronaldo may not have as much pressure on his shoulders as Lionel Messi but don’t allow him to hear you say that. Ronaldo will want to bow out of probably his last major international tournament on a high as his nation did two years at Euro 2016 in France. However, he was injured in that game and didn’t take part as Eder handed Portugal that all important strike, how Ronaldo would have loved to notch that kinda goal on such a special night.
This summer in Russia is his chance to make his mark. A huge favorite to take the Golden boot trophy too.
Antoine Griezmann, (France)
Griezmann finished top scorer in Euro 2016 with 6 goals.
Despite France’s sorry defeat to Portugal on their own turf, Antoine Griezmann still had a tournament to remember finishing Euro 2016 with 6 goals. With all the uncertainty surrounding his future at Atletico Madrid, it now certainly looks like he will be staying at the Wanda Metropolitano. Now that his future is sorted, we are in for another brilliant tournament from the French striker.
It’s about time the World sees how good Antoine Griezmann really is.
Neymar (Brazil)
This has to be Neymar’s World Cup right?
If there is one player in the same pressure on his shoulders as Messi, it sure is Brazil’s own golden boy Neymar. The PSG star chose the French capital because he believed he could become the worlds best over there rather than with Lionel Messi. Last season was a good one, though it could have been better for Neymar if he hadn’t been absent for much of the season, but now his beloved Brazil need him now more than ever before, a chance to right their wrongs after disaster of four years ago at the hands of eventual champions Germany. Neymar was absent through injury that night, but few could only imagine what could have been if he had played, so now is the time to show up when it matters.
There is no doubting his world class abilities. After Lionel Messi and CR7, he is considered the best around, and this summer is the time to show it.
Luis Suarez, (Uruguay)
Luis Suarez and Uruguay are dark horses for this summers tournament – can they cause a stir?
Whenever people debate who are the best strikers in the world, everyone tends to just about forget Luis Suarez or are hesitant in placing him in that category. My question is: Why? Luis Suarez is world class – when he isn’t causing trouble – and this maybe the opportunity for him to make his mark in history and lead Uruguay to unexpected glory, with the firepower they have at their disposal including Edinson Cavani, you can’t rule out a dark horse making their mark.
Edinson Cavani, (Uruguay)
Edinson Cavani has enjoyed a very fruitful season for PSG, can he now translate that form on the World stage?
The fact that Uruguay boast two of the best strikers on the planet means they cannot be written off in Russia, we’ve mentioned the enigma, Luis Suarez but we can’t forget about Edinson Cavani who was a revelation in front of goal for PSG last season, now can he carry on that form into Russia – where it matters most. My problem with Cavani is, when you don’t need him to turn up he does but, when you desperately need him he doesn’t deliver – PSG’s struggles in the Champions League are an example.
This summer is Cavani’s chance to prove his doubters wrong – well, I mean myself.
Robert Lewandowski, (Poland)
Lewandowski is another player in need of a good tournament in Russia.
No doubting Robert Lewandowski’s scoring prowess for both club and country, but very few of them come in major tournaments. The Bayern Munich striker notched a brace in their warm-up friendly against Lithuania taking his goal tally before the tournament to four goals in three games, but the question is whether he can carry it in to the World Cup where he struggles to make a name for himself.
Poland rely hugely on Lewandowski despite their influx of fairly talented players in midfield and attack, but can he overcome that pressure this summer? Though, he is a definite contender for the Golden boot award.
Harry Kane, (England)
Is this the year Harry Kane marks his name in the history books?
Much of England’s potential success in this summers tournament – however you want to measure it – depends upon whether Harry Kane can replicate his Tottenham form unto the world stage. Kane has enjoyed another goal glut season for the North London club and Gareth Southgate and co will be hoping Kane can finally prove he has what it takes to cut it amongst the World’s elite strikers – how about winning the Golden boot award for a shot?
You wouldn’t bet against Harry Kane. No pressure.
Timo Werner, (Germany)
One of the brightest striking prospects will be gracing the World stage in Germany colours this summer.
RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner will be heading into Russia an unknown quantity in comparison to the other names on this list, but that doesn’t mean he won’t shine on probably the most important stage of his career so far leading the line for the World champions Germany. Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose proved brilliant forwards leading the line over the years of Joachim Low’s men but now its time to make room for a potential shining light in Timo Werner. Following in their boots will prove difficult but on the evidence at club level, Werner will have no problems at all.
An excellent watch in the Bundesliga for the past two seasons with 21 goals in each campaign – hence Leipzig’s sudden emergence as a top 6 side. Also winning the Golden boot in the 2017 Confederations Cup will have mightily impressed his fans, but now the World Cup will be a great opportunity to put his name on the map. Providing he clicks, he will be in and around the top goalscorers list this summer.
Kylian Mbappe (France)
Finally this is our chance to see Kylian Mbappe perform on the World stage.
Age is just a number. Kylian Mbappe maybe the youngest on this list, but that doesn’t mean he won’t cut it amongst the elite strikers on this list. What a player. Simply outstanding to watch. There is no doubting this boys talents, and now is our chance to finally see what he can do when it matters most. If France are to have any chance of finally overcoming their demons on the World stage since 1998, Kylian Mbappe like Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba will be a central figure.
There is simply no fear in Mbappe when he takes on players, a player demonstrating skills, technical abilities and goal scoring powers beyond his tender years. This boy has a very very bright future and this summer is only just the start. Frightening.
Gabriel Jesus, (Brazil)
Gabriel Jesus’ first major international tournament and he will be hoping to make his mark.
What a journey Gabriel Jesus has been on, 5 years ago he probably would not have thought he’d be the main man for one of the best coaches in the world in Pep Guardiola, helping his team capturing the Premier League title at a canter, getting ahead of one of the biggest names in the game in Sergio Aguero and leading the line for his country in the famous no.9 shirt worn famously by a number of Brazil heroes such as Ronaldo who Jesus has drawn much comparisons to.
This will be Jesus’ first major tournament for Brazil, and with players such as Coutinho, Willian, Neymar and co. in and around him, he has every chance of leading his country to World Cup glory, even winning the Golden boot in the process. Who knows what this summer holds for Gabriel Jesus.
Mo Salah, (Egypt)
Can Mo Salah continue on his extraordinary year this summer in Russia?
When Mo Salah signed on the dotted line for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool last summer, little did he know he would be the first African footballer to finish top scorer in the Premier League. An absolutely astonishing season Mo Salah has had, equaling the kind of scoring feats that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo would be proud of each season. If he can win the golden boot in the Premier League, who’s to say he can’t achieve the same at the World Cup? The shoulder injury picked up against Real Madrid looks to have healed and now Salah can focus on making an impression on the grandest stage of them all.
Romelu Lukaku, (Belgium)
Belgium’s all-time top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku.
Romelu Lukaku may be the last on this list, but he is certainly not the least. A fantastic first season at Manchester United has now given the big Belgian an incentive to even make his mark on the world stage. Already his countries all time goal-scorer at the age of 25 is an amazing feat. Lukaku can take great pride in his leading his nation out in Russia and probably living up to their ‘Dark Horses’ tag. Can Lukaku lead Belgium to an unlikely success? One things for certain, his name will definitely appear as one of the main goalscorers throughout the tournament, you can risk your mortgage on that.
Diego Costa, (Spain)
How will Spain line-up this summer? Will Diego Costa start?
Was a bit hesitant placing Diego Costa on this list of contenders simply for the fact that we really don’t know if Spain will start their campaign with a recognized striker or whether new coach Fernando Hierro will go for broke and start with a midfielder as the leading front man. Whatever Hierro chooses, Spain will be lethal. Considering he goes with Diego Costa, you cannot rule out the Atletico Madrid target man making a massive impact in Russia.
As this summers World Cup draws closer to our screens this summer, much eyes have been cast on which players will light up this summers tournament in Russia. We can already pick out who the superstars will be and how they will fare, but how about the younger generation?
Here I pick out some of the current crop of youngsters outside the Premier League who will be looking to make their mark on the grandest stage of them all:
Marco Asensio, (Spain)
Asensio has enjoyed two impressive seasons in the Real Madrid’s first team, could the World Cup be his platform to impress for his national side?
We already know the talent Spain boast at their disposal and its no wonder why national team coach Julen Lopetegui will be having headaches and sleepless nights leading up to the opening game against Portugal on who should make the first XI. Players such as Diego Costa, David Silva, Isco, Rodrigo, Iniesta, Koke, Thiago are some of those superstars but one man who is not far from reaching stardom is Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio.
What a player. If you’ve watched Real Madrid over the past couple of seasons including last, you’d realize that Asensio has been just as vital as Cristiano Ronaldo in the Real Madrid side – as crazy as that sounds. His bravery in possession, his dribbling, vision, pace, skill, and technical nous, this kid has got everything in his locker. He may not have got the game time he will have wanted this past season at the Bernabeu but no doubt about it, Marco Asensio is not only Real Madrid’s future but Spain too.
Timo Werner, (Germany)
Germany boast a superstar striker in the making in RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner.
Timo Werner may be unheard of right now, but if you haven’t noticed this talent already then you do not know German football. Germany national coach Joachim Löw has been rightfully been reliant on Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez in the past, strikers who have led the nation to glory but now Germany can gleefully look to the future with Timo Werner leading the line. 8 international goals for his country in only 14 appearances should not be taken lightly. Also 21 goals in the German Bundesliga last season is another massive achievement after his feats the previous season matching the current tally. Werner also finished top scorer at the 2017 confederations cup with 3 goals and two assists.
Pace, trickery, composure in front of goal. Do not rule Werner out for the golden boot this summer in Russia.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, (Serbia)
Nicknamed ‘the Sergeant’, Milinkovic Savic has seen his stock rise after an impressive season with Italian giants Lazio.
It’s incredible that former Serbia coach Slavoljub Muslin decided to ignore the towering Lazio midfielder during the World Cup qualification – and that ultimately led to his controversial dismissal. Now new coach Mladen Krstajic has taken affection from SMS – as he is known – the Lazio midfielder will be one of the rising stars at this summers tournament. It’s no wonder Milinkovic-Savic has garnered much interest already this summer from the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona. 11 league goals from midfield in Serie A last season was outstanding, not only that but his all round play – physically strong, imposing in the air, he is also elegant in possession setting the tempo and dictating it also. His price will go immensely higher once this summer is over.
Any success Serbia enjoy in Russia, SMS will be their saving grace – the nickname says it all.
Youri Tielemans, (Belgium)
Tielemans might not get much action in Russia but he is seen as the future of Belgian football.
Tielemans might go under the radar behind Belgium’s big names this summer with only 4 appearances made during qualifying but that has not stopped a variety of scouts analyzing his performance. Joining Monaco from Anderlecht last summer feels like the right move for Tielemans and with the departure of Fabinho to Liverpool, it is now time for Tielemans to make his mark next season for Monaco and a good performance in Russia when given the opportunity may just put him in Leonardo Jardim’s thoughts for a permanent starting berth next season.
Blessed with great passing range, vision and technical skills, Kevin De Bruyne, Lukaku, Hazard and co are not the only ones to watch out for in Belgium’s talent infested squad.
Lucas Torreira, (Uruguay)
Torreira has been the subject of a reported interest from Arsenal’s new coach Unai Emery.
Uruguay may have found themselves a diamond in midfield, no I don’t mean the formation I mean Sampdoria’s little terrier Lucas Torreira. He may stand at 5ft 6ins tall but he is a big presence in midfield. The 22-year-old has only missed two league games in two years since joining Sampdoria and his impressive and dominant performances in the Serie A have attracted much interest from Arsenal with talks already taken place for Torreira’s services, according to Sky Sources.
Giovanni Lo Celso, (Argentina)
Lo Celso was a permanent fixture in the PSG starting XI last season.
Could Lo Celso be the future of Argentinian football? The 22-year-old made an astonishing 47 appearances for PSG last season. The fact he is in the starting 11 week in week out considering the amount of superstars in the PSG squad says a whole lot about his quality. Much debate has arisen regarding the quality in Argentina’s midfield becoming an ongoing issue and the reason they struggle to impress despite their star studded squad. However, with upcoming stars such as Lo Celso, Argentina will not be relying on the old guard of Lucas Biglia and Mascherano for much longer.
Lo Celso is a star in the making.
Hirving Lozano, (Mexico)
Mexico’s Hirving Lozano celebrates his goal during their World Cup 2018 CONCACAF qualifiers football match against Honduras
19 goals and 11 assists in his first season in Europe for Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven proves the promise he showed at his Pachuca was no slouch. Hirving Lozano is brilliant to watch, fierce when the ball is at his feet, lightning quick and an impressive eye for goal despite his tender age. 19 for the season for a player still gradually improving has shown his rise to stardom is just around the corner.
Named one of FIFA’s young stars of stars of 2017, the 22-year-old has notched seven strikes in 27 caps for his country. Already Premier League clubs are circulating for his signature, and an impressive showing at this summers tournament might just get him his deserved move.
Julian Brandt, (Germany)
Eyebrows were raised when Brandt was named in the final 23 at the expense of Manchester City’s Leroy Sane.
The fact that Julian Brandt was included in the Germany squad instead of Manchester City’s Leroy Sane – who enjoyed a remarkable season in the Premier League – tells you all you need to know about Julian Brandt’s quality and how highly Germany coach Joachim Low rates him. Brandt scored 12 goals and laid on seven assists for Bayer Leverkusen last season.
Presnel Kimbempe, (France)
After an impressive debut full season under Unai Emery with PSG, Kimbempe finds himself on the plane to Russia.
Kimbempe like Lo Celso has had an incredible journey. The defender made his senior debut in 2014 but only became a full regular in the PSG side last season, amongst the world class talents of Thiago Silva and Marquinhos, Kimbempe has enjoyed a steady rise to the top, starting 27 games last season even surprisingly chosen ahead of captain Thiago Silva for the Last 16 second leg tie against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
While this World Cup might come too soon for Kimbempe, he sure looks to have a bright future.
Piotr Zielinski, (Poland)
Zielinski has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Napoli.
Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski has drawn comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne from Poland’s head of football federation, he goes on to even controversially say that he probably has more quality than the Belgian. Believe of it what you want, Zielinski is a mightily impressive performer. Energetic, quick across the park, a domineering presence in midfield and the eye for a cutting-edge pass, no wonder Napoli were such a joy to watch in Serie A last season. Zielinski will be a very key figure for Poland in Russia.
Kasper Dolberg, (Denmark)
With Nicklas Bendtner ruled out, this may be Kasper Dolberg’s chance to shine on the world stage.
After an impressive breakout season for Ajax in 2016/17 as they reached the Europa League final – beaten by Manchester United – Kasper Dolberg has endured a rather frustrating year at the club blighted by injuries. However, the 20-year-old striker could still a make a massive impact with Nicklas Bendtner ruled out of action. Can Dolberg take his chance this summer?
Gareth Southgate has named his squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer as England embark on a journey to right their wrongs in previous major tournaments. By the looks of things, Southgate has been pretty brave with his selection, omitting star names such as Wilshere, Joe Hart and Chris Smalling – players who were a certainty to make the 11 at the beginning of the season are now heading for an extended break this summer rather than making their mark on the World’s biggest international stage.
With noticeable omissions, Southgate otherwise sprung surprises and well-deserved call ups for Trent Alexander Arnold, Nick Pope and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. While the former two have impressed for their various clubs this season, it is the latter that has caught the eye going into the summers tournament.
Loftus-Cheek has impressed on loan at Crystal Palace this season.
Players such as Jack Wilshere and Jonjo Shelvey – both heavily tipped to make the plane to Russia – were omitted from Southgate’s squad leaving many to question where all the creativity and spark will come from in midfield as England kick off their World Cup campaign against Tunisia on June 18. Both players hold the ability to unlock defenses with their passing and vision; attributes which could be argued is England’s main problem from midfield – not being able to unlock or dissect a packed defence. Wilshere and Shelvey’s abilities will probably be missed this summer. However, in Ruben Loftus-Cheek, England could have the solution to their creative problems in midfield.
The Crystal Palace player on loan from Chelsea has enjoyed a fruitful season at Selhurst Park under manager Roy Hodgson. Deployed on the left of a four man midfield – albeit an unfamiliar position for him – the young England international was tasked with helping out both in defence as well as attack which he performed with great aplomb. Although his goal return for Palace may not attract the attention of some fans – 2 goals in 25 appearances – his role in the midfield was more than just scoring goals.
Loftus-Cheek’s ability to control the game, drive from midfield and beat his opponent was a vital tool used by Hodgson throughout the season as Palace successfully avoided relegation finishing 11th in the Premier League table. He was a key man for Palace which is shown in his return from injury which coincided with Palace’s significant six-game unbeaten run. His fine link-up play with Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha was key to much of Crystal Palace’s play, cutting in from the left-wing and dictating play and becoming involved in orchestrating various Palace attacks, his movement in turn allowed team-mate and left-back Patrick Van-Aanholt to bomb up the pitch which added another dimension to Palace’s attacking arsenal.
The role he played throughout Palace’s success this season is something Southgate felt he needed for this tournament hence his inclusion, and it may just be the platform Loftus-Cheek needs to ignite his career. Frozen out at Chelsea on numerous occasions will not have helped his development and glittering abilities. The departure of Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United last summer – a key man in Chelsea’s midfield the previous season – was the opportunity for Ruben Loftus-Cheek to make his presence known to Antonio Conte but instead the Chelsea coach invested heavily in Danny Drinkwater from Leicester and Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco – two signings who have failed to the mark their territory in the Chelsea team.
Chelsea’s transfer failures led many to question why the club did not have the faith in young fledgling talents such as Loftus-Cheek and Nathanial Chalobah who was sold to Watford, players who could have offered so much under Conte’s tutelage. Rather, it was much of the same story for Chelsea as they failed to place their trust in players coming through the academy ranks. That has not stopped Ruben Loftus-Cheek though, his move to Palace has proved a stroke of genius on his part and as a result he has been rewarded with a spot on England’s plane to Russia at the World Cup – his first major international tournament – and a chance to flaunt his talents on the world stage.
Loftus-Cheek’s first international cap against World Champions Germany reminded Southgate of his qualities.
Former England assistant coach who is now assistant at Crystal Palace, Ray Lewington expressed his views on Loftus-Cheek and states why he holds him in such high regard, speaking to talkSPORT,he says:
“I love him – I think he’s such a wonderful player. He’s a superstar in the making.”
“He possesses skills that I haven’t seen in too many English players. He’s wonderfully good in tight areas, he gets out, his acceleration is incredible”.
Lewington’s analysis is indeed interesting, not for a long time have we seen an England midfielder so physically built like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, so physically imposing on his opponents and having the ability to beat his man one-on-one, a trait we rarely associate with English footballers especially in the midfield areas. A perfect example was his international debuts against World champions Germany and Brazil – a brief reminder to many that Loftus-Cheek has what it takes against the elite. The bravery and trickery to approach matches of such magnitude would have really impressed Southgate and England fans alike.
Loftus Cheek’s technical attributes and his incredible knack of getting out of tight spots with that one piece of skill is a trait we cannot help admiring from Loftus-Cheek. The pace and acceleration he holds once he’s beaten his man is another characteristic which is mightily impressive considering his tall frame. A player of Loftus-Cheek’s talents just cannot go unnoticed. It would be criminal.
In Gareth Southgate, Loftus-Cheek has a coach who knows his abilities inside out having coached him at Under-21 level also, not only that but the faith and belief he has in players still developing and considered too young to make the step up will stand Loftus-Cheek in good stead even if he doesn’t get much opportunities in the tournament this summer. Never before have former coaches of England had as much belief in youth as Southgate has. Players such as Loftus-Cheek, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marcus Rashford, Dele Alli, Jordan Pickford and Nick Pope can only look forward to the future if Southgate is in charge of England in the long haul.
Loftus-Cheek once again impressed in his short sub appearance against Nigeria.
In order to truly unmask his fledgling potential, Loftus-Cheek will need work on his final third attacking play and the ability to score goals from midfield. He has not shown great promise in that department as yet and is something he can really develop if he wants to be considered a great player or even break into the Chelsea like he has the ability to. If he can work on and change that over the course of the summer he may just find himself on the minds of those in charge at Chelsea – whether it will still be Antonio Conte at the helm remains to be seen. He played well coming on in the friendly against Nigeria at Wembley last week and should be starting against Costa Rica on Thursday, probably getting a 90 minute run-out. Perform well in that game, and Southgate will have headaches figuring out who best to choose from for his first 11 when England open up against Tunisia on June 18.
Nonetheless, there is no doubting Loftus-Cheek’s abilities and potential but the World Cup this summer could be the platform he needs to make his mark on the world stage.
The build-up to England’s attempts to end 52 years of hurt and suffering without a major international trophy in Russia this coming summer is well and truly on.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions will walk out in Volgograd to face Tunisia in their opening game at the 2018 World Cup on June 18 with the hopes and expectations of a whole nation weighing heavily on their shoulders. Will this be the year England finally give the whole country something to shout about rather than the despair and agony we get on a regular basis.
This week Gareth Southgate and coaches of all the other World Cup nations have to submit a provisional squad of 35, which has to be cut to 23 by June 4. Ahead of Southgate announcing his official squad on Wednesday, here is my squad picks to board the plane to Russia this summer.
Despite criticism, Joe Hart is England’s go to guy.
Say all you want about Joe Hart, Gareth Southgate is a huge fan of his and the West Ham goalkeeper is a shoe in to be one of the first names on the plane for this summers tournament. Despite his recent mistakes and the criticism placed on him, Hart is still capable of some World Class saves plus his leadership and communications makes him one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted players in his squad. Don’t be surprised to see Hart with the armband when England start against Tunisia.
Jordan Pickford
Pickford is Hart’s closest contender for the no.1 goalkeeper shirt.
Arguably Everton’s best player this season, if he had better defenders in front of him, Pickford will probably look much better than he already his. His knack for unbelievable saves and his ability to play out from the back is a characteristic Gareth Southgate endears to. Probably Joe Hart’s strongest contender for the England no. 1 jersey.
Nick Pope
Nick Pope has established himself as Burnley’s no. 1 this season.
Nobody wants to be last choice when it comes to goalkeepers in major international tournaments, you don’t even get a look in but if you take a peak at Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope’s story, you’d be surprised as to how he is making the plane to Russia. Considered as Burnley’s no.2 when the season started, an injury to Tom Heaton has allowed Nick Pope to come in and put in some wonderful performances in between the Burnley sticks. He could even be challenging Heaton for the number 1 jersey when the new season starts in August. Permitting he does make the squad, Pope should be delighted at how far he’s come, representing England at a major tournament should be a highlight in his career so far.
Defenders:
Kyle Walker
Many criticized Walker’s move to Man City, but he is responded with his first major trophy in English football.
Easily England’s best full back and another man worthy of Gareth Southgate’s trust in amongst the whole squad. Not only can he be useful at right full-back but the win against against the Netherlands two months ago showed that Walker can be useful at centre back if Gareth Southgate chooses to go with a back three in Russia.
Kieran Trippier
Kyle Walker’s understudy turned Tottenham’s Mr Reliable at full-back. A worthy replacement.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Mr reliable Kieran Trippier is a worthy replacement for the departed Kyle Walker. The former Burnley man has established himself in the Tottenham defence and has put in some stern performances this season for the North London club. If Southgate opts for Kyle Walker at centre back in a 3 man defence, don’t be surprised to see him deployed at wing-back. His deliveries are a force to be reckoned with.
Harry Maguire
Harry Maguire has been a assured performer both for Leicester and England.
Another player who’s rise to prominence has been mightily impressive, so much so that Manchester City were interested in his services in the January window. Maguire has been a mainstay in the Leicester City defence this season, couped up for a bargain from Sheffield United last summer. His ability to carry the ball from the back and his remarkably tall frame makes him a shoe-in to start England’s opening fixture against Tunisia. I am a huge fan of his.
Chris Smalling
Chris Smalling’s leadership and determination has made him a mainstay in Mourinho’s United defence.
Say what you want about Chris Smalling as well as Joe Hart, do not be surprised if he is rewarded with the captains armband in Russia. Smalling has been remarkable for Mourinho and Manchester United this season, no reason why the Special One picks him every week. I had my doubts about him also but not only has he become assured and matured at the back for United but his recent knack of popping up with vital goals this season has endeared him to the United faithful – finally.
John Stones
Stones may have lost his place in the City team but his abilities is strongly admired by Southgate.
I am a huge fan of this guy. John Stones is a player I can’t help but admire, his ability to start attacks from the back, his bravery at keeping possession in his own penalty box and defensive qualities makes him a definite in my England squad. If there was ever a brave and noble defender in the squad its John Stones. He may have lost his place in the City line-up as the season developed but Stones is well liked by Guardiola, and his characteristics is mainly the reason why.
Eric Dier
Another Tottenham Mr Reliable.
Whether he plays in the middle or at the back, you know Eric Dier will put his all in. Another player Mauricio Pochettino places so much trust in. The only thing you can probably argue about Dier is what his best position is and that is what Southgate will be eager to address before England kick off on June 18.
Phil Jones
Mourinho’s trust in Jones has been rewarded with brilliant performances in defence for United.
You may disagree with this choice but Phil Jones has made remarkable improvements under Jose Mourinho this season. Jones will literally put his body on the line for the cause and that is why Mourinho trusts him so much. A worthy addition to Southgate’s defensive choices.
Danny Rose
Danny Rose has enhanced his position as England’s no.1 left back this season.
Like him or love him, Danny Rose is England’s best left back choice. There is no doubt about that, and he will be one of England’s key outlets in attack this summer in Russia. Not only has he been a force in attack for Tottenham but he has impressively refined his defensive abilities and is more assured when under pressure. England’s number 1 left-back for years to come.
Ryan Bertrand
Ryan Bertrand has shone in the midst of adversity for Southampton this season.
Southampton have had a poor season in the Premier League this campaign, only just beating the drop before their last fixture against Manchester City but one player who has performed on a consistent basis for the club is left-back Ryan Bertrand who not only has been a good performer but he has also led impressively since Mark Hughes was appointed the new manager. A worthy understudy to Danny Rose.
Midfielders:
Jack Wilshere
Despite his injury record, Jack Wilshere has been a mainstay in the Arsenal starting 11 this season.
Still a huge fan of Wilshere and that’s why I feel he has to be on the plane in Russia. It looks as though he has overcome his injury troubles and has become a regular in the Arsenal line-up this season. His ability to carry the ball from midfield is a very underrated characteristic – one England really need if they are to progress in this summers World Cup. You can’t argue with Wilshere’s inclusion.
Jordan Henderson
Another Leader in the England dressing room, Jordan Henderson.
Whenever I bring up Jordan Henderson, a lot of people aren’t convinced and I am shocked at that. Henderson has enjoyed probably his best season in a Liverpool shirt, and when he isn’t in the team, you can see the difference, the balance he brings in between the defence and attack is what Klopp admires in Henderson. He will be a key player for Southgate in Russia, no doubt about it.
Dele Alli
Dele Alli has endured a bit of a blip this season compared to last but there is no doubting his abilities.
A lot people are hesitating over whether Dele Alli should start England’s first game against Tunisia and I somewhat agree but there is no doubting what Alli brings to the table. His confidence, tenacity and the ability to pop up at the right place at the right time is what marks him out apart from the rest. Alli has grown considerably this season despite some minor blips. You just can’t rule him out this summer.
Jesse Lingard
Jesse Lingard has enjoyed a very fruitful season at Old Trafford.
What a season Jesse Lingard has had under Mourinho. Many doubted his talents before the Portuguese coach stepped in and Lingard has rewarded Mourinho’s faith and trust in him. Ferguson did once say Jesse Lingard will be a late bloomer and that prophecy has truly come to fruition this season. Gareth Southgate is also a huge fan of his underrated abilities, so don’t be surprised to see Lingard start over Dele Alli when England kick-off against Tunisia.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Loftus-Cheek has blossomed under Roy Hodgson this season for Crystal Palace.
Every squad has to have one or two wildcards and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is one of mine. A player I can’t help admiring. His impressive showing when given his England day-view against World champions Germany which rewarded him with the Man-of-the-match award has certainly put his abilities and talents on the map again. Still only 22, it feels like he has been around for a long time – well, he has. A recent injury picked up as the season drew to a close looked to have ended his World Cup hopes but he has come back fighting, ending the season on a high once again. I would personally beg Southgate to put him on the plane if I had the chance, a serious talent.
Jonjo Shelvey
Jonjo Shelvey, despite his troublesome nature has been mightily impressive under Rafael Benitez for Newcastle.
Make of this choice what you will but Jonjo Shelvey is another wildcard of mine. He maybe a trouble maker but his ability is what England need this summer and it is one none of the other midfielders in this squad are blessed with – the ability to pick a pass out of nowhere. Shelvey has that in abundance. If you analyse his performances this season, you’ll see why I have picked him for my England squad. You need to take a gamble sometimes.
Raheem Sterling
Raheem Sterling has made massive improvements under Guardiola this season.
Raheem Sterling has been amazing under Guardiola this season. Each and every department of his game which needed some work has been well fine tuned by Guardiola and Southgate will hopefully enjoy the fruits of Guardiola’s labour this summer. Sterling will be a formidable attacking outlet for England in Russia. A stellar showing for City this season which has garnered 22 goals throughout the whole of the campaign, a remarkable return for a player who has received much criticism in the past. He has answered those critics with aplomb, and long may it continue.
Strikers:
Marcus Rashford
Although he has not been used sparingly this season, Marcus Rashford has matured considerably this season.
The future of English football Marcus Rashford will hopefully have a World Cup to remember this summer. The youngster has enjoyed three glorious seasons in the red colours of Manchester United and although he has not been used as much as he would have expected at the start of the season, the striker has matured considerably under Mourinho. His tactical discipline has been a key attribute he has picked up this season, being deployed in various positions in which Mourinho has instructed him to, and to devastating effect. Much of England’s hopes will hinge on the form of the young Marcus Rashford. No pressure.
Danny Welbeck
Danny Welbeck enjoyed a fruitful end to the season – will that be enough to break into the squad?
I was unsure of this choice because Danny Welbeck can be so frustrating at times, but I can’t deny the fact that whenever he is called upon for England, he somehow turns up, and it may not be because of his goal scoring or assists but it his ability to disrupt the flow of a defence with his constant running and harassing of defenders, a useful trait alongside Jamie Vardy, Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling in which Southgate can harness to great effect this summer.
Jamie Vardy
Jamie Vardy has enjoyed yet another emphatic goal scoring season in the Premier League.
Jamie Vardy may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but trust me he is your cup of water on a barren spell without any liquid. He is that crucial to Leicester and he has shown that once again for yet another season. Check out his goal scoring exploits for the last few seasons and you’d be mightily impressed. His emphatic penalties can be useful too also – if you know what I mean. Typical England eh?
Harry Kane
Yet another fantastic goal scoring season for Harry Kane – can he continue that form in Russia this summer?
Is there an end to this guys goal scoring talents. Absolutely remarkable. He may not have one the Golden Boot for the third time in a row this season – beaten by the brilliant Mo Salah of Liverpool – but yet, he still delivers when Tottenham need him. Harry Kane has now notched over 20 goals in a season 4 times in a row now. Remember those talks going around saying he was a one season wonder once upon a time? Yeah, that’s long been forgotten. This man means business. All our nations hopes and ambitions this summer cannot come to life without the one and only Harry Kane. Go on Son!
Wednesday 17 May 2017, Monaco secured the Ligue 1 title for the first time in 17 years after a 2-0 win at home to Saint-Etienne.
Needing a point to be crowned French champions of the eighth time, the mesmerising young forward Kylian Mbappe, 18, scored the opener in style latching onto a fine through ball from Falcao, skipped around the goalkeeper slotting in his 14th league goal of what has been a remarkable and breakout season for the French starlet.
Kylian Mbappe, 18, notches his 14th league goal of the season in the title clincher against Saint-Etienne.
Forward Valerie Germain made sure of the victory in injury time with a tap-in from close range. The home side all but secured the title before kick off, with Paris St Germain three points behind with just one game to go and a far inferior goal difference.

The new champions rarely looked troubled in registering their 11th consecutive victory and subsequently lifting a trophy that has eluded them since the turn of the millennium. As coronations go, their performance the week before – a 4-0 win over Lille – a pitch-perfect, a performance that was microcosm of the team’s style, attacking prowess, evolution and success it has produced this season.
Players such as Thomas Lemar, Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Fabinho and Benjamin Mendy have all written their own narratives this season, you could even throw in right-back Djibril Sidibe. Putting aside the brilliance of Radamel Falcao, all of these young players have encapsulated what Monaco have been about for the past couple years, a club hell-bent on bringing through youth. Remember players such as Anthony Martial and James Rodriguez? Yeah, these guys. Even if these talents aren’t home grown, Bakayoko and Bernardo Silva for example – moulding and nurturing them into household names, almost overnight on the back of an unlikely title and en even improbable run to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Monaco have notched an incredible 107 goals in Ligue 1 this season, the second best record behind Barcelona (116) of any club in Europe this season.
Throw in the experienced players such as Radamel Falcao, Danijel Subasic, Kamil Gilk, Joao Moutinho and Valerie Germain, coach Leonardo Jardim has managed to expertly blend in experience with youth to create a side worthy of blowing any of the big sides in Europe – fair enough they were outplayed and outclassed by Juventus in the semi-final, but they did give the Italian giants a run for their money at certain points in the tie.
Fair play to Jardim, for getting the best out of Radamel Falcao who looked a lost cause in the Premier League during his time at Manchester United and Chelsea, has been reinvigorated scoring 28 goals in 41 appearances – returning to the kind of form that labelled him the best forward in Europe in his glory days at FC Porto and Atletico Madrid, offering a firm rebuke at his critics that still linger in England.
2016/17 has seen the return of the prolific Radamel Falcao, notching 28 goals in 41 appearances in all comps.
Still only 21, left-winger Thomas Lemar has overcome doubts and questions about his size and goal-scoring abilities to become – along with Bernardo Silva – one of Monaco’s most creative fulcrums as well as his break into the French squad. Only three players in Ligue 1 has recorded more assists than Lemar – a total of 9 assists and also 9 goals in the process, a remarkable return for a player slowly finding his awesome potential.
Thomas Lemar has enjoyed an incredible breakthrough season at the Stade Louis II.
On the other wing, is Bernardo Silva who has shaken off the injury that kept him out of last year’s tournament Euro 2016 to perhaps become the best playmaker in France. His stats over the season tell its own story – a player who has been brimming with confidence ever since the start of the season – 8 goals, creating 58 chances, laying on nine assists for his teammates, completing 897 passes with a pass completion rate of 81%, of which 71% of those passes have been forward attempts. No wonder why clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona have been sniffing down his neck since the turn of the year.

Of all the young crop of stars in this Monaco side, Silva is the most likely to depart the Stade Louis II with Jose Mourinho sharing the same agent as the Portuguese starlet. It is believed Mourinho feels Silva can be the player to take United to the next level in the Premier League – adding the sort of thrust and quality to their game, a quality they have sorely missed this season, as a result, failing to mount a serious assault on the Premier League title many expected when Mourinho signed.
Whatever happens, Jardim will hope his young starlets stay another year after such a remarkable season.
Then there’s probably the hottest young prospect in the whole of European football, Kylian Mbappe. He has caught the eye from a number of suitors around Europe including Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid. 21 goals for a player of his age is no joke, then if you add in his 6 goals in the Champions League – 5 in the last 5 in the Knockout stages meant he was the youngest ever player ever to reach that feat in the Knockout phase. Truly outstanding for a player so young. It’s not only his scoring prowess but the way in which he goes about his business. The way he weaves past his markers with consummate ease, using his skill, speed and agility to bombard his opponents. He sure ain’t the finished article yet, but he is a true representation of Monaco’s progress and evolution over the past few years.
18-year-old Kylian Mbappe has been on fire this season.
The size of Monaco’s achievement should not be understated. Yes, they too have a billionaire owner and resources to recruit and hone outstanding players, but their operating budget is still roughly a third of Paris Saint-Germain’s.
Certainly, most of their players aren’t home-grown or brought through the academy ranks but the club and Coach Leonardo Jardim must take huge credit for nurturing these players into world beaters. Fabinho was scouted from mid-table Portuguese side Rio Ave (initially on loan) and has been a revelation since his switch from right-back to midfielder resulting in major interest from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Kamil Gilk was hardly the most astute defender at Serie A side Torino, but he’s been outstanding. Left-back Benjamin Mendy has massively improved since his move from Marseille. Jemerson has been a steel alongside Gilk in central defence, and he only joined the club from Atletico Miniero last summer. All in all, Leonardo Jardim has redesigned and re-invigorated these players into one of Europe’s most exciting teams while wiping away the misery of finishing an astonishing 30 point lead from Paris Saint-Germain last season. This title has been majestically won, not bought, and rightly so.
The man behind Monaco’s renaissance this season – Leonardo Jardim.
When Monaco spent upwards of $160million on players in a single transfer window four years ago, it appeared that French football had a new powerhouse in town. The club had only been promoted to Ligue 1, but utilized the resources of a Russian Prince, Dmitry Rybolovlev to secure the signatures of world class talent such as James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao. A second place finish followed, as fans revelled in a long awaited challenger to the Qatari wealth of Paris Saint-Germain. However, Monaco were unable to maintain their spending power and had abandoned its lavish spending, and one by one, those ‘Galactico’ signings departed.
PSG, meanwhile, continued to lure the some of the best players in the world to the French capital, utterly dominating French football and wrapping up last season’s Ligue 1 title by early March. Over 30 points clear of their nearest challengers in 2015/16, PSG’s star studded squad were expected to look down on their closest rivals once again.
How wrong the were.
In an era of super agents and the trend of spending big buck to secure ‘World Class’ talent. Monaco’s CEO Vadim Vasilyev has abandoned those traditions and has gone for all for a more grass roots approach. In a game where a former leading British pundit famously once stated “you can’t win anything with kids,” Monaco ended the season atop the French League comfortably 8 points in front of their Mega-rich rivals.
Monaco’s emphasis on youth has reaped many rewards – an almost unprecedented Ligue 1 title – their first in 17 years.
So what is the next step for these brilliant group of young stars? Questions have been inevitably been raised on the sustainability of an exciting Monaco project. Will they keep some of their young stars this summer? Over the course of the year, widespread reports rapidly emerging surrounding the futures of the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Fabinho, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar. Three of those most likely to leave, Bakayoko who has been attracting much interest from Antonio Conte at Chelsea. As stated previously, Bernardo Silva reportedly on the verge of completing a move to Manchester United for a fee of around £70million. Last of all, Benjamin Mendy could be on his way also, with Manchester City and United interested in his services after an outstanding season at Left-back. Even coach Jardim has been subject of intense speculation recently regarding a move to Arsenal replacing Wenger but those rumours seem to have weathered down much to the joy of the Monaco board.
These rumours are just a few of the dozen making the rounds, but the club are already planning for the future with highly-rated Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans joining the club for a fee of around £21million. An attack-minded central midfielder, his tactical versatility and eye for goal make him an ideal replacement for Bakayoko, even if he does not possess as much physical presence.
Monaco are already building for the future, with the signing of hot prospect Youri Tielemans expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
More players are sure to follow, but Monaco also have an impressive stable of players out on loan as well. Allan Saint-Maximin’s dazzling ability on the ball has impressed at Bastia, while Corentin Jean and Rony Lopes have also looked good in flashes. Malian midfielder Adama Traoré, a former U-20 World Cup Golden Ball winner, remains an intriguing if erratic prospect.
Many are afraid the club will not be able to carry on its dominance at the top of Ligue 1 for much longer, but the club itself are confident they sustain its challenge despite the supposed mass exodus expected to occur this summer, but the lack of competition for Ligue 1’s top places, at least compared with the Premier League, allows the team to attract young players who have proven themselves to some extent but are not yet full fledged stars. There are some stories emerging that they might just be able to keep some of their star players this summer. If that’s to happen, expect them to challenge PSG again next year and sustain another assault on the Champions League.
As Leicester City remarkably won the Premier League last season without the trend of splashing the cash, Monaco have followed suit – instead, nurturing and moulding emerging talents into League champions. You don’t need the riches to succeed.
