Who should start alongside Harry Kane at the Euros?

Gareth Southgate needs to prepare himself for a real selection headache in the coming months as England embark on their vital preparations for this summer’s rescheduled Euro 2020 competition.

England boast a whole wealth of attacking talents for Europe’s biggest international prize this summer and the next few months leading up his Euro 2020 squad announcement in May will provide Gareth Southgate with the solutions as to what formula will be required in order to give England the best chance of making their mark in the competition.

Based on England’s most recent encounters, Gareth Southgate has opted with the 3-4-3 formation – a system that provides solidity at the back as well as flexible and well-rounded approach going forward – as well as the customary 4-3-3 shape, a formation some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs currently use as a foundation for a possession-based approach.

Against Iceland in November – England’s last international match – Southgate went for the 3-4-3 formation which had Jack Grealish and Phil Foden either side of main striker, with the latter grabbing an impressive double – the first international goals of his career. One thing is for certain, Harry Kane will be Gareth Southgate’s main man at the Euros barring any late injuries.

The issues and questions facing Southgate, however, will be who lines up alongside Harry Kane to make up England’s attacking trio when their first game kicks off against Croatia on the 13th of June.

Based off on the season so far, two of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and Phil Foden may well be lining up with Harry Kane this summer, but which one? All four players have enjoyed terrific seasons at their respective clubs so far this campaign, but only two of them can be chosen, so lets try and help Gareth Southgate solve this great problem.

What do the stats show?

The majority have been calling for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish to get a guaranteed starting spot alongside Harry Kane and if you take a look at his stats for the season, he is the most creative out of Gareth Southgate’s abundance of riches. With 10 assists in the Premier League, Grealish has continued his delightful leadership of a team which depends heavily on his services.

Since his injury against Brighton in mid-February, Villa have not looked the same without his end product. Dean Smith’s side have only won once since Grealish’s injury, against Leeds at the end of last month, four games ago, and its pretty clear Villa need their star man back if they are to challenge once again for an unprecedented European spot. Nonetheless, Grealish has already shown he can be relied on at international level too. His performance in the 2-0 defeat against Belgium was awe-inspiring, proving why he should be one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet.

Grealish has provided 3.45 key passes and 3.32 final third passes, that’s considerably more than his rivals for a starting spot this summer. For a long while, England have needed someone who is brave on the ball, and a player who likes to take the initiative when things aren’t going well for the team. Grealish fulfils all that in abundance, as shown in his 2.59 successful dribbles per 90 minutes. The Aston Villa superstar is actually amongst the top creators in Europe sitting at the same decorated table as Lionel Messi, Hakan Calhanoglu, Bruno Fernandes, Thomas Muller and Kevin De Bruyne.

The next creative star from the above graphic, you could argue is Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho who started the season pretty slowly but since the turn of the year has once again highlighted why he is ranked amongst the most creative wide players in Europe. Sancho has scored the same amount of goals against Grealish and provided one less than the Villa star, but yet he is arguably one of the most creative out of all of England’s creative assets. Like Aston Villa, Dortmund aren’t the same fluid and dangerous side without their star man.

Certainly, many have purred on the devastating abilities Erling Haaland and rightly so. Though, many forget that Jadon Sancho has assisted seven of Haaland’s goals so far this campaign which means he’s more than capable in providing for Harry Kane at the same rate for England. Sancho is a uniquely gifted forward, a player blessed with such tremendous on-the-ball skills, link-up plays but most of all, his almost telepathic understanding with strikers as deadly as Erling Haaland is just as impressive. He knows where Haaland wants the ball and he serves it on a plate for him. So why can’t he do the same for Harry Kane? Along with his superb average of 3.71 dribbles per 90 minutes, he’s also averaged 2.89 key passes and 2.54 final third passes per 90.

Against defences who are camped in their own half lining up in deep blocks when defending, Sancho and Grealish offer Southgate the most effective tools to breach such obstacles.

The stats clearly show Sancho and Grealish as England’s most creative outlets but none of those two provide the same rapid goal threat as Rashford and Sterling who are both performing at a similar level in front of goal in the Premier League with 0.34 and 0.39 goals per 90 respectively, which is considerably more compared to Sancho’s 0.31 goals and Grealish’s 0.27 per 90.

Nine goals each for Rashford and Sterling in the Premier League this season, and while they may not be as creative as Grealish and Sancho for their clubs – though, Rashford has registered seven assists for Manchester United – they are more reliable and trusted assets for Southgate. Both possess the pace, directness and unpredictability in their weaponry to trouble the most sturdy of defences in Europe. Both players have proven time and time again that they hold the valid tools needed to lead England when it matters most, if there is any proof, England’s UEFA Nations League victory away to Spain in 2018 is a fine exhibition.

Many will argue, that both Rashford and Sterling complement Harry Kane better than anyone else. As seen through Kane’s prowess this campaign, his ability to drop deep and find the likes of Hueng-Min Son and Lucas Moura with some unerring raking passes could well be a unique quality which Southgate uses to some effect this summer.

Both Rashford and Sterling are players who can operate beyond Kane, in their off-the-ball movement and the ability to locate open spaces to get on the end of his through balls. It was these ruthless combination plays which pierced expertly pierced through Spain’s back-line for Raheem Sterling’s opener and Marcus Rashford’s goal which put England 2-0 up on that night in 2018.

However, we cannot forget the incredible and unique abilities of Manchester City’s star boy Phil Foden who has somewhat enjoyed a remarkable, can we say, breakthrough season in City’s stunning rise to the top of the Premier League table.

The midfielder can be placed in the same bracket as James Maddison, Mason Mount and Jesse Lingard in that they are more or less attacking midfielders rather than the more traditional wingers like Sancho, Rashford, Grealish and Sterling. However, Guardiola has utilized Foden in the front-line for City, whether as a false-nine, a wide-left winger and an inside-right forward, he can of course make a strong case for a starting spot in June.

Six goals, five assists as well as 1.95 key passes per 90, 2.15 final third passes and 2.48 successful dribbles, Foden has flourished whenever he is tasked with the most complex of tasks under Guardiola’s instruction this season. Like Grealish and Sancho, Foden possesses the class and uniqueness to breach the most compact defences.

Foden’s two-goal performance against Iceland in November was simply superb. The bravery, courage and tenacity at which he performed both in attack and in his pressing showed even the most prestigious of international stages won’t be a step too far for him. He isn’t afraid to strut his stuff against the best of sides, though there are understandable doubts whether Southgate would throw him in from the start against Croatia. If his services are required, in the latter parts of that game or in the tournament, Foden is more than capable and reliable to make the telling difference.

Phil Foden is a gift Southgate simply cannot afford to ignore.

So, we’ve made the case for each of these incredibly talented forwards. The stats evidently show that Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho are indeed the most creative, along with Phil Foden while Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling are the tried and trusted pairing, their speed and directness are just as key to Southgate’s 3-4-3 system so it will be difficult to ignore either of them. Southgate must strike a balance to find a more well-rounded and complementary approach with Kane spearheading the attack.

So why not unleash a creative outlet coupled with a more direct and pacey runner? It seems the more plausible and stable pairing. Take your pick, Gareth. No pressure.

My favoured pairing: Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

Is Kelechi Iheanacho Finally Coming of Age?

Is Kelechi Iheanacho Finally Coming of Age?

A player brought up from humble beginnings. A footballer shaped and moulded through family tragedy, a player who never complains at performing under-the-radar while allowing his teammates to gather all the acclaim.

It’s always been an admirable example and quality of Kelechi Iheanacho’s career so far. His superb hat-trick against Sheffield United not only provided Leicester City fans a timely reminder of his abilities but also a telling optimism of the player he can become, especially with Leicester’s main man Jamie Vardy in the twilight of his career at the King Power.

Kelechi Iheanacho has always been perceived as a footballer who can achieve so much but yet flatters to decieve in equal measure. A footballer who merely scratches the surface.

There’s no doubt about it, when his tail is up he looks every bit the striker that many of the Leicester City faithful describe as arguably the deadliest finisher in front of goal at the club, and that’s a huge remark considering the spectacular goalscoring numbers Jamie Vardy has pulled up in recent seasons.

But that isn’t just any empty description and viewpoint, we’ve seen Iheanacho on the end of some superb finishes throughout his career, goals that will have been spoken about for weeks had Jamie Vardy or James Maddison gotten on the end of them.

Though, that says much about the player Iheanacho currently, a player touted for so much more when he’s on song, but yet still needs a major work, confidence and self-belief to maintain the sort of consistency levels Jamie Vardy possesses and ultimately become one of the best finishers in the English top-flight.

The time of describing 24-year-old Kelechi Iheanacho as an ‘underrated’ commodity surely must come to a halt, especially after his exploits in recent weeks. The Nigerian’s hat-trick, his first in the Premier League, against a hapless Sheffield United took his tally to five goals in his last three appearances. It is the first time has scored in three consecutive Premier League games in his career and he’s now also scored six in his last six Premier League outings.

Bar Harry Kane, there isn’t a striker currently enjoying such a rich vein of form in front of goal in the Premier League over the last few weeks other than Kelechi Iheanacho. Considering it took him 54 league appearances to register his previous five goals, there is no question that the Nigerian international is in the hottest streak of his Leicester City career.

Though, whatever run he seems to be on, he still maintains that shy, timid but yet humble character, and that is of course down to his modest upbringing. After his superb performance over Sheffield United, he dedicated his goals to all the mums on Mothers Day. The striker appeared visibly, emotional during his post match interview as he grasped the deserved match ball in his arms.

He said after the contest:

“I don’t know how to express this, but I am over the moon and delighted.

I thank God almighty for this day because I’ve been waiting for this day to come.

I’ve been working really hard and I’m really grateful to God.

I thank my teammates and my manager for helping me grow. I thank everyone in the club for helping me out and I’m happy for this day.

I’m going to use this opportunity to dedicate this hat-trick to all the mothers in the world. The ones who keep taking care of us. I wish them all a happy Mother’s Day.”

The striker’s mother, Mercy, died in 2013 after a battle with illness. In an interview he gave in 2015, he spoke of his upbringing and family trauma, stating that: “Everything I do, I do for my mum and my family – that’s what drives me.”

His goals against Sheffield United showed a player finally realising his worth to the Leicester City cause this season, and a player highlighting why he is more than just a bench player. It will be hard to see how Harvey Barnes and James Maddison get back into the line-up once they return from injury, and that’s a massive credit to the incredible efforts of Iheanacho at a time where Leicester have been plagued by unfortunate injuries. The Nigerian striker has indeed stepped up, but could there be more for him in this Leicester City team?

Micah Richards, a former teammate at Manchester City, said on the Monday Night Club on BBC Radio 5 Live Sport, that the striker needed to be more “selfish” and that he doesn’t “see him as an out-an-out goalscorer like Vardy” but his build-up and link play as the most impressive parts of his game, and that is of course true. The forward is excellent when picking up excellent pockets of space behind Jamie Vardy to either find his teammate or create something out of nothing. As well as scoring 10 goals in all competitions this season, he’s also provided three assists. The forward has also recorded on average this term, 1.36 key passes, 1.73 final third passes and 1.86 shot-creating actions per 90. He’s a valuable link-man.

Yet, he showed a whole other side to his game against Sheffield United. His first goal, a real poachers effort, driving into the box off some excellent instinctive movement to tap in Jamie Vardy’s pass. Iheanacho got his second from another Vardy assist, a superb pass which found him across the 12-yard box, this time powering a ruthless first time effort past Aaron Ramsdale. His third was the pick of the bunch, dropping into those dangerous pockets he usually operates in, receiving the ball from Wilfried Ndidi before unleashing an unstoppable drive from all of about 25-yards.

That’s the kind of ruthless and selfish edge his strike partner Jamie Vardy has lived off throughout his career in the Premier League, and one Iheanacho himself needs to pick up in order for him to fully fulfil his undoubted potential in front of goal. As stated earlier, on his day Iheanacho’s finishing is indeed unmatched, but he needs to maintain such levels with greater consistency, especially in a division as demanding as the Barclays Premier League.

Many have of course doubted whether the 24-year-old could become Leicester City’s main man up-top once Jamie Vardy finally hangs up his boots, and rightly so. Iheanacho has flattered to deceive at times, wasting chances and hesitating at opportunities that the best strikers would regularly feed off. However, the Nigerian is a player who can effect games at an alarming rate. In 76 starts in all competitions for Manchester City and Leicester, Iheanacho has been directly involved in 51 goals (37 goals, 14 assists). For a player who needs to be more “selfish”, that is unerring statistics.

But, and its a significant but, his performance against Sheffield United isn’t seen often enough. For example, a game Leicester needed to pick up three crucial points, against Crystal Palace in December, Iheanacho was nowhere to be found. Even the best strikers, when enduring a torrid afternoon, would still go on and effect games, the Nigerian put on a full-horror show and that’s why 60 of Iheanacho’s 116 appearances has come as a sub, and when he has started its mainly been in cup competitions. That was until Vardy had to step away for a short period to undergo hernia surgery.

Without Vardy, Iheanacho flattered to decieve. With him, the young striker has been immense. However, that needs to change. Iheanacho needs to get to a point where Rodgers can be confident and rely on him to effect games when Vardy isn’t around. That’s the next step up for him. Will he become Leicester City’s go-to man once Vardy does finally leave? That’s for Iheanacho to prove, though he will continue to have the belief of his manager who said after the Sheffield United game:

“Kelechi Iheanacho is a great guy and when he has been asked to come in he has performed.

Absolutely delighted for him to have got his hat-trick in the Premier League.

It’s a great achievement and all were very good team goals.”

For the foreseeable future, Iheanacho will not have to be “asked” to come in and cover when the squad is plagued by injuries, he’d need to deliver when the manager expects it of him.

For a player starting from humble beginnings, a player who desires for others to be in the limelight rather than himself, to be the best he can become he may have to tap into the selfish areas of his heart to take that next bold step in his career. He may well have finally come of age, but can he maintain it?

Ilkay Gundogan’s tremendous goalscoring form is no fluke

Ilkay Gundogan’s tremendous goalscoring form is no fluke

Ilkay Gundogan struck a second-half double as Manchester City powered to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad stadium and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points.

After City took the lead from a Rodri penalty – won by Gundogan following a foul from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – Tottenham fell victim to yet another slick double from the Premier League’s most in-form player as Ilkay Gundogan carried on his superb goal scoring run, taking his tally to 11 Premier League goals, also making him the second highest goal-scoring midfielder in the league behind Bruno Fernandes (13).

The first of his goal came from yet another smooth Manchester City move in the penalty box, the German received the ball from Raheem Sterling before stroking the ball past Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal. His second was just as silky, when goalkeeper Ederson purposely hit a long ball forward right onto Gundogan’s run, he bamboozled Davinson Sanchez, leaving him in a comical plank position through some lovely nimble footwork before planting the ball past Hugo Lloris, scoring his ninth goal in 2021 so far.

The German international’s evening was somewhat cut-short due to a groin injury coming off for Ferran Torres in the 66th minute, however, it was yet another afternoon in which Gundogan stole the show, providing a telling reminder of his superb footballing qualities in recent months.

“Someone said to me once I perhaps don’t shine but I allow others to shine, and that’s how I see myself,” Ilkay Gundogan said in a recent interview. For much of his Manchester City career, Gundogan has indeed been the one performing admirably in the background, providing players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and even David Silva with the onus and platform to grab the headlines and the plaudits. It was actually Mikel Arteta, the former Manchester City assistant, who told him that he’s the one who allowed others to shine, and its pretty much summed up his game since he stepped through the Etihad doors after his move from Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

We’ve always known that Gundogan possesses that special ability, even if he hasn’t been handed the same plaudits as some of his more forward-thinking teammates, but he’s still quietly gone about his business with consummate professionalism and a smoothness that somewhat means his intelligence on the pitch is rather much underappreciated.

However, Gundogan has always been so integral to Pep Guardiola’s philosophy. The ability to keep the ball, move it quickly, setting the tempo, organising his team-mates while destabilizing his opponents, as well as the panache to wait and execute the delicious passes to his forwards, its why he’s so cherished under the former Barcelona coach.

It’s rarely the most obvious thing that is pointed out in football matches and it can certainly be difficult to appreciate Ilkay Gundogan from the outside looking in. In fact, in recent years, there’s been the argument that Gundogan doesn’t even feature in most City fans’ dream starting XI’s with David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne prominently featuring, even within the media too. Though, Pep Guardiola still always needs him to keep things ticking over.

“You cannot just a build a team of 11 players playing the same type of football and the same type of characters and players,” Gundogan added, almost defending his measured style and approach. “In the end, there has to be harmony – one great picture that fits.”

A lot of Gundogan’s game does indeed go unnoticed, but in recent weeks the German certainly does not need to have to spell out the levels and improvement at which he’s performed, when he’s plainly reminded everyone that he can shine as brightly as anyone in the City team, and its been a breath of fresh air for the City faithful after the injury to Kevin De Bruyne.

Fresh from his Premier League Player of the Month award for January, Ilkay Gundogan has remarkably taken his game to tremendous new heights in recent weeks, and its a huge testament to the adaptation and fine-tuning that Pep Guardiola has done to his side in such an unprecedented and unpredictable season.

Sunday’s win over Tottenham took their successive wins in all competitions to a resounding 16 games, and a sixth successive home win without conceding. From the goalkeeper Ederson, right down to the forwards, or should we say sheer rotation of “false-9s”, Manchester City have undergone a superb shift in mentality and winning aura with Ilkay Gundogan playing a key role in this unstoppable run.

City are doing all this winning – and comfortably – without any recognized strikers, with Gabriel Jesus featuring sparingly and main hitman Sergio Aguero still out nursing an injury.

But, if you’ve taken any notice of the way Ilkay Gundogan has gone about his business since City’s upturn in form, you’d realise that they could play without Jesus and Aguero for the remainder of the campaign, and still remain pleasingly dominant. Make no mistake about it, Gundogan’s transformation in front of goal is no fluke.

Quite simply, Gundogan has played higher up the pitch than normal, and that’s down to the minor tweaks within City’s game that certain fans will fail to notice.

Gundogan has taken up David Silva’s old “Mezzala” role, within the half-spaces, inside left, given the license to roam within that territory and use the ball in more advanced areas. It’s why most of City’s goals have been created through players making off-the-ball runs to the byline, receiving a pass and cutting it back into the penalty area for players to tap in. Pep Guardiola has simply found a way to breach low-block defences and Gundogan has been evidently central to that discovery.

Earlier in the season, City were playing a much more compact, narrow style, with wingers cutting inside and Gundogan sitting deep, keeping the play ticking over alongside Rodri. That didn’t work, many were doubting City’s title credentials as a result. However, since the draw at Old Trafford in November, Guardiola has tweaked his side, pouring more men forward, including Gundogan.

City now keep the ball so well, not only because of the likes Gundogan, Bernardo Silva or Phil Foden but because Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko move into central midfield roles when City are in possession of the ball, this in turn allows Gundogan the license to wreak havoc in more advanced areas while Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling stretch the play to allow more room, and that’s why Gundogan has so far notched 11 goals since the start of December.

Heatmap involving Foden, Gundogan, Sterling and B Silva against Tottenham.

By placing the German in more advanced areas within a more forward-thinking team, his attacking output has remarkably increased. He’s much more of a goal threat now, in terms of creating chances, but most importantly finishing them. As well as his 11 goals in 12 starts, he’s averaged 1.6 key passes, 3.24 passes into the final third, 7.59 progressive passes as well as 0.34 carries into the opponent’s penalty area. People may say that Phil Foden is the new David Silva, but in actual fact, its Ilkay Gundogan who has taken on that role.

Furthermore, it won’t be much appreciative of Gundogan’s superb form if we put it plainly down to the tactical tweaks that Guardiola has made since their draw at Manchester United, but Gundogan’s genius footballing IQ has attributed to his recent success also. He knows where to run, knows where to hurt defences, as well picking up the right moments in the box to score goals.

Gundogan has always held the panache and “va-va-voom” when finishing, he never really held the knack for the simple goals but his improved understanding of where to be in the penalty area to finish off moves has been nothing short of spectacular and means he can score the easy chances and create them at such incredible regularity. Guardiola said in 2019 that “when Gundogan is close to the box, he arrives at the right tempo and the right moment to score a goal”, and that’s exactly how most of his 11 goals have come: arriving in the box at the right time. The first two, against West Brom, and against Newcastle were almost identical, bursting into the box to convert a Raheem Sterling cut-back, even at Anfield as well finishing off Phil Foden’s tremendous pass. Those goals, and his double against Tottenham also highlighted his incredible calmness and composure in front of goal.

Gundogan is a tremendous footballer, and in recent weeks, has progressively morphed into a genius performer, a master tactician on the football pitch rather than when referring to a manager in the dugout. Ilkay Gundogan is the complete footballer right now, and there’s no reason why he can’t take his game much further. 11 goals in 12 games is the kind of stats you’d refer to Sergio Aguero, but who needs the Argentine when its a certain German midfielder putting in those tremendous numbers?

Pinch yourself all you want, but this is reality. Ilkay Gundogan’s current goalscoring form seriously is no fluke.

Martin Ødegaard could prove a valuable string to Arsenal’s bow

Martin Ødegaard could prove a valuable string to Arsenal’s bow

Arsenal have completed the loan signing of Real Madrid’s Norwegian midfielder Martin Ødegaard.

Martin Ødegaard made it known of his desire to move away from Madrid for the remainder of the season in order to play regular first team football, having played just nine times for Real Madrid so far this campaign.

Real Madrid held talks with the midfielder, and according to reports blocked a potential return for Martin Ødegaard to Real Sociedad, the club he enjoyed a successful loan spell with last season registering seven goals and nine assists helping the club to an excellent sixth placed finish in La Liga.

Real Madrid cut short his two-year loan spell last summer but have failed to provide him with the regular minutes his talents and abilities deserve.

The midfielder has reportedly chosen to move across to London. A deal which could provide just the tonic Mikel Arteta needs in order to continue Arsenal’s development this season. With Mesut Ozil departing to join Fenerbache in Turkey, Arsenal are of course in need of a creative outlet, a position that has so far eluded them this season.

Academy product Emile Smith-Rowe has taken on the role in the last few weeks and is proving a key component in Arsenal’s recent revival, providing three assists in 6 games as they look to push on for and build on their recent upturn in form.

It is evidently clear though, that Smith-Rowe cannot do it on his own despite his incredible influence in Arsenal’s recent attacking displays, a run that has seem them pick up five wins from six games since their defeat to Everton before Christmas.

Quality and depth is needed in the creative areas and Martin Ødegaard may well prove the perfect addition for Arsenal. The Norwegian wonderkid is a creative phenomenon, evidently shown throughout his loan spell at Real Sociedad last season where he formed a devastating partnership with Spanish playmaker Mikel Oyarzabal.

The 22-year-old possesses all the makings to become one of the best creative players of his generation. Technique, vision, passing, spatial awareness, high number of chances created, and a stupendous left-foot, Martin Ødegaard will instantly demand the attention of many in the Premier League.

He desperately needs game time, minutes that would aid his development which has somewhat stalled at Real Madrid due to Zinedine Zidane’s lack of faith in youth.

The midfielder ranked third for expected assists last season (6.81), sixth for chances created (62), second for through ball attempts (19). He’s a luxurious player, one who is very well versed in the ability to take up position in between the lines of an opponent’s midfield and defence, link play and create endless opportunities for his forwards. Last season, Ødegaard recorded a staggering 2.14 key passes, 5.02 final third passes and a whopping 7.22 progressive passes per 90 for Real Sociedad, highlighting his incredible influence in attack and devastating creative edge.

Ødegaard is a player blessed with such remarkable versatility, he’s very effective from anywhere across the midfield and attack. He regularly lining up for Sociedad from the number 8 in midfielder, but also had the license to roam into no.10, also when lining up right wing. The Norwegian works best when he is allowed the freedom to roam across the attacking third without being restricted to one particular area. Wherever he ends up playing for Arsenal, he’ll still possess the understanding and nous required to create chances for his teammates and for himself.

Ødegaard is also devastating from set-piece situations too, whether an indirect free-kick or a direct one, his admirable qualities in whipping in delicious deliveries from corners and free-kicks as well as also having the capabilities to score from them could prove such a vital and valuable weaponry for Mikel Arteta at the Emirates.

Martin Ødegaard is a player of such incredible quality and class, a player that Mikel Arteta surely feels can take the club to that next level. The Norwegian hasn’t been provided with the opportunities at Real Madrid, with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde all vying for the same position but a move on loan to Arsenal is a fantastic deal for both parties.

However, there are some questions regarding the deal, Ødegaard will only be at the club for six months so it will be cruel of the Arsenal faithful to expect so much so soon. For a player of his young age, coming to a new environment for only a short period of time could throw up a number of issues for the midfielder, an issue Arteta would need to keep tabs on in order for Ødegaard to thrive at the Emirates. Though, the fact that Arteta personally spoke to the player regarding the move means the former Manchester City coach identifies these potential ramifications but sees the Norwegian as a valuable component for his side and a player who could instantly come in and provide a telling impact from the off.

Arteta holds a young growing squad at his disposal and Ødegaard represents the perfect addition to what could well be a very good squad capable of having a much better second-half of the season.

How Could Arsenal Line-Up With Martin Ødegaard?

Pedro Gonçalves – Scout Report

Pedro Gonçalves – Scout Report

When the 2019/20 campaign ended, Bruno Fernandes finished as Sporting Lisbon’s top scorer.

A remarkable feat considering the Portuguese star left the club in January, but it also highlighted the huge hole Fernandes left when he joined Manchester United at the start of the year. It represented a mighty task in trying to replace him.

While Fernandes was continuing to shine in Manchester, Sporting were left licking their wounds wondering what they had lost. Eight months on, Sporting discovered their potential solution, an exciting, talented up and coming replacement.

Now we’re in January 2021, Sporting Lisbon have suddenly forgotten about Fernandes’ departure and replaced him with a new star, Pedro Gonçalves. In August Sporting snapped up young midfielder Pedro Goncalves from Famalicao, and the results have been spectacular.

The club sit four points ahead at the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga, mounting a surprise title challenge and much of that sudden success is down to the thrilling recruitment of Gonçalves, also known as “Pote”. The attacking midfielder has gone on to score 11 goals in 12 outings from midfield.

A tremendous return for a player currently setting Portugal alight. So who is he? How has reached such lofty acclaim? What does the future hold for such a prestigious talent?

Who is Pedro Gonçalves?

Born and raised in the small Portuguese city of Chaves, not far from the Spanish border in North Portugal, Gonçalves honed his skills and development at a number of academies as a youth, from local side Vidago to Chaves, Braga, to Valencia and eventually Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Gonçalves arrived at Wolves with his eye on a bright future while Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were playing in the Championship back in 2017. He produced a number of eye-catching performances for the Wolves under-21 side, but his only senior appearance for the club came in a 30-minute cameo against Sheffield Wednesday in a League Cup fixture in August 2018.

With first team opportunities hard to come by, Gonçalves returned to his native Portugal in the summer of 2019, being signed by newly-promoted outfit Famalicao. The Portuguese side went onto be surprise success stories during the 2019/20 Primeira Liga campaign under Joao Pedro Sousa, the long-term former assistant of Marco Silva, while Goncalves was central to their strong campaign.

Gonçalves scored five goals and registered a further five assists as Famalicao exceeded expectations finishing in an astonishing sixth place. His breakthrough campaign in the Portuguese top-flight saw Gonçalves pick up plenty of admirers, none other than the three biggest clubs in the country: Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon. However, he signed for the latter.

Once again, Gonçalves is flourishing in a side that is exceeding expectations as the Portuguese giants chase their first league trophy since 2002, 19 years. Sporting are currently unbeaten, top of the table with 11 wins and two draws scoring 30 goals along the process, and Gonçalves is at the top of the pile for goals with 11 goals from 12 appearances.

What is Gonçalves’ style of play?

Pedro Gonçalves has established himself as a technically proficient performer. An attacking midfielder who is well-versed in becoming the sole-creative force in the team, as well as a consistent goal machine, even though he isn’t traditionally a striker. He’s already drawn such stark comparisons to former player, Bruno Fernandes because of his influence and leadership in attack. His 17 goals so far in the league is no mean feat.

And its certainly astonishing to say that few who are close with him aren’t surprised he’s pulling up some wonderful numbers in front of goal so early in the season. Gonçalves is that good.

The 22-year-old has slotted in seamlessly in the position that was vacated by Bruno Fernandes and is registering better numbers than the Old Trafford talisman, averaging a strike every 83 minutes so far this season. In his final season at Sporting, Fernandes averaged a goal every 191 minutes.

Gonçalves may not be as creative as Bruno Fernandes, registering only the three assists so far but Gonçalves has picked up a reputation for becoming so ruthless in front of goal, punishing defences for basic mistakes. He averages 2.9 shots per 90. 11 goals from just around 30 shots is remarkable numbers for a striker let alone an attacking midfielder.

To put things into context, Pedro Gonçalves holds a better conversion rate (42%) than Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah (24%). Quite spectacular. While his scoring statistics are alarming and will wow any reader or viewer, Gonçalves’ game transcends beyond his ability to score goals. It’s his understanding and intelligence of where to be not only in the box, but within the final third.

Like his predecessor, Gonçalves knows when to pick up dangerous positions in the attacking areas in order to disrupt and hurt the opposition. It is a brilliant yet unique characteristic, and its no wonder why he’s so influential in a very astute, organised but incredibly fluid Sporting team. Gonçalves averages 1.4 dribbles per 90, 2.7 crosses, 12.0 final third passes and he also average around 5 touches in the opposition penalty area, a fascinating statistic which highlights Gonçalves’ propensity to become a central figure in every attack Sporting conjure up.

What’s also vital to note about Pedro Gonçalves is that also huge influence down the other end, in his defending and pressing. His small, slight frame means he’s able to get about the pitch with relative ease, that’s why he’s so effective in his pressing, and the harassing of his opponents. He’s won a staggering 1.3 tackles per 90 this season and averages 5.1 duels won.

He’s a terrier, whenever his opponent is dwelling on the ball too long, he’s got the tenacity and desire to quickly nip the ball from behind them. Sporting have only conceded thirteen times from 27 games this season and are on course to win the Portuguese Primeira Liga without tasting defeat, and Gonçalves’ work along with his attacking partners are a huge bonus and a testament to their terrific defending and complete performances so far this campaign.

What does the future hold for Pedro Gonçalves?

Pedro Gonçalves’ is in for a terrific future if he carries on this form for the foreseeable future. A uniquely gifted midfielder who has captured the imagination of many in the Portuguese top-flight so far this season. Reports are already linking with a move to Manchester United, and while those stories may be untrue, its one that represents the kind of season Pedro Gonçalves is enjoying right now.

Providing Sporting go on to win the Primeira Liga this year, there’s no reason why Gonçalves won’t continue his rapid development at the club, and in his native Portugal. It would take a monumental amount of money to prize the midfielder away from the club considering the fact they’ve just replaced Bruno Fernandes for Gonçalves. It’s imperative Gonçalves ignores the speculation about his future and continue on progressing within a very exciting Sporting team. Who knows, his current form could warrant a place in Portugal’s European Championship squad.

Gonçalves deserves such recognition right now, but his feet must stay firmly on the ground. A terrific player enjoying a terrific campaign. The future is certainly radiant for Pedro Gonçalves.

Local West Croydon church still thriving during UK Lockdown

The 2020 coronavirus pandemic has significantly impacted churches within several communities in the UK where services and gatherings have closed in order to stop the virus spread.

I went to visit local West Croydon family church and spoke to the Pastor of the church Kayode Ojo to get the lowdown on how he’s managed to lead his congregation through the pandemic, and what he’s learned as a Church leader from these perilous times.

How has Croydon Tabernacle, in West Croydon operated during the pandemic? What struggles have they faced, and how the church plans to move forward post-pandemic.

In memory of Diego Armando Maradona: 30 October 1960 – 25 November 2020

Legendary football icon Diego Maradona, one of the greatest players of all time, died at the age of 60 on the 25th of November 2020.

The iconic former Napoli midfielder and former Argentina manager, suffered a heart attack at his home in Buenos Aires.

Captain of Argentina at their 1986 World Cup triumph, where he scored the controversial ‘Hand of God’ goal knocking England out of the prestigious tournament. He proved a key figure throughout the tournament, almost singlehandedly leading Argentina to victory, especially his terrific solo run and finish against England.

Maradona played for Barcelona and Napoli, including clubs in his native Argentina. A career that spanned 21 years, he won two Serie A titles with Napoli, starting his career with Argentinos Juniors, also playing for Sevilla, and Boca Juniors and Newell’s Old Boys in his homeland.

He scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for his nation Argentina, representing them in four world cups.

Maradona did indeed have his personal issues before his death but he was a footballer who not only inspired a nation, but the whole world.

My Barclays Premier League Team of 2020

My Barclays Premier League Team of 2020

2020 has been a whirlwind year in the Premier League, especially after the lockdown measures as a result of the coronavirus bringing things to a halt from March right through to June. However, despite the difficulties, the English top-flight has still provided plenty for fans to shout about and its that time of year where we start to reminisce on what has been a crazy calendar year as well as which footballers have stood out throughout 2020.

So without further ado, with a few surprises and probable controversial picks, here is my Barclays Premier League team of 2020:

GK:

ALISSON BECKER, Liverpool

Liverpool under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp enjoyed a remarkable year in which they claimed back a Premier League title which eluded them for all of 30 years, and special thanks for such a tremendous feat will have to partly be given to Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker who has completely transformed Liverpool’s defending the past year. Certainly, Virgil Van Dijk and co have proven a steady rock in front of him, but when they have been breached, its Alisson has proven such a rock and a superb last line of defence, pulling off some stupendous saves when Liverpool have needed it most. Alisson is more than just your average goalkeeper, one who is also capable of building Liverpool’s attacks from defence but also coming off his line just in time to halt attacks that have bypassed Liverpool’s high-line.

Alisson this year has been the best goalkeeper without a shadow of a doubt. The complete package, the complete goalkeeper.

Defence:

Right Back:

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD, Liverpool

You’d be hard-pressed to find a right-back in all of Europe who holds the same weaponry Trent Alexander-Arnold does, and that’s got to make him arguably the best full-back going forward in Europe. Since the start of last season in the Premier League, Trent Alexander-Arnold has provided 15 assists for his teammates, a remarkable feat for a player who has grown considerably this past year. A footballer who has picked up a reputation for putting in some of the most delicious deliveries you’ll ever see, and a player capable of some tremendous cross field passes, a feature that has seen him form the most formidable full-back partnership with another player on this list, Andy Robertson.

It’s crazy to think that Alexander-Arnold is only 22 and still has so much to offer both for club and country. Don’t be surprised to seek the full-back take up a permanent midfield role in the foreseeable future. He’s certainly got the tools in his locker to thrive there.

Centre-Backs:

VIRGIL VAN DIJK, Liverpool

The rock, heartbeat, anchor and most of all the leader of this inspirational Liverpool team. It’s such a shame we may not get to see Virgil Van Dijk until the end of this current campaign, but my oh my what a year the centre-back has had. Arguably the best centre-back in the world and his rapid rise to get there considering the journey he’s taken is truly pleasing to see. Virgil van Dijk has got the lot, everything thing you’d want in your modern day centre-back. Power, strength, vision, astute reading of the game, positional understanding, leadership, you name it. Hopefully, the Dutch captain comes back much much stronger than he was before, or we’ll be looking at one of the finest centre-backs ever to step foot on the football pitch, if he isn’t already. You simply cannot put it past him.

FABINHO, Liverpool

In a matter of months, after long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, Brazillian midfielder Fabinho has gone from being the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League to the best centre-back right now. Many thought after those long-term injuries, Liverpool won’t be the same commanding force at the back, but boy are they wrong. Liverpool have maintained such impressive and solid consistency levels in defence because of Fabinho’s defensive understanding and intelligence and its because of his incredible consistency levels, that he makes my team of the week. The Brazillian is unstoppable where-ever role he is asked to perform, a dominant machine as well as a player so calm, assured and meticulous when in possession. Without a shadow of a doubt, Fabinho has got to be one Jurgen Klopp’s finest acquisitions during his Liverpool tenure.

Left-Back:

ANDY ROBERTSON, Liverpool

Left-Back Andy Robertson completes an impressive Liverpool back-five in my team of the season and rightly so. The Scottish defender’s growth, maturity, performance levels and consistency this past year has been nothing short of remarkable. He’s got to be the best left-back in Europe right now. Every single game, week-in and week-out, Robertson has performed to the best of his ability no matter the opposition and deserves much of the praise coming his way. He’s as good as defending and forming a solid base in defence as he is marauding down the left-hand side delivering some peach crosses for his forwards. Robertson has undergone a tremendous 2020, also achieving an unprecedented Euro 2020 finals spot with Scotland for next year. He’s been so good, you’d struggle to find a game where he’s failed to make his mark, its a testament to his high levels of performance, and fitness. The complete left-back.

From a Hull youngster a few years back to becoming one of the world’s best, the perfect rise for any footballer.

Midfield:

DECLAN RICE, West Ham

Ever since David Moyes joined West Ham last season, Declan Rice’s true undeniable talents in midfield have been brought to the fore, making him arguably England’s finest defensive midfielder currently. He’s also an established international under Gareth Southgate and its rightly deserved. Yes, many will say why isn’t Jordan Henderson on this list but you don’t want your team of the year to be infested with Liverpool players, even though Henderson has enjoyed a tremendous year leading Liverpool back to Premier League glory after so long.

However, I couldn’t ignore Declan Rice’s performances. The 21-year-old’s growth and maturity this year has intriguingly coincided with West Ham’s resurgence under David Moyes and Rice has been at the epi-centre of everything good about West Ham this past year. They’ve got a settled and trusted system and the players are all playing for the shirts once again. Declan Rice has been a leader among men, putting in some dominant and superb performances alongside Tomas Soucek. Whether he joins Chelsea or not in the foreseeable future, Declan Rice holds such a bright future in the game.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE, Manchester City

Need we say more on the astonishing abilities of one of the Premier League’s greatest foreign imports? Kevin De Bruyne has enjoyed another tremendous calendar year in 2020, despite Manchester City’s domestic and European shortcomings. Deserved winner of the 2020 PFA Player of the Year Gong and a consistent performer all throughout for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. Mr Reliable. 20 assists last season in the Premier League surpassing the record for most assists in a Premier League season, and already has 7 to his name in 12 Premier League games. Kevin De Bruyne is a master of the creative arts and its no wonder why he continues to shine through for City every single game. His vision, the outrageous passing, and his continuous leadership on the pitch means the Belgian is a shoe-in for everyone’s team of the year for 2020.

BRUNO FERNANDES, Manchester United

Ever since his move to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January, the Portuguese magnifico Bruno Fernandes has been involved in 32 goals in 29 games (18 goals, 14 assists) highlighting an incredible 2020, helping Manchester United to a third place last season, and he’s already aiding Manchester United’s stark progress so far this season where they end the year second in the Premier League table a few points off Liverpool.

Bruno Fernandes is a difference maker. A true maestro. Already he’s been involved in 17 Premier League goals this season (10 goals, 7 assists). Manchester United have missed a player with Bruno Fernandes’ pedigree for so long in midfield and if the club continue to build around him for the near future, there’s no reason why the club cannot taste domestic and European glory once again. The impact he’s had on everyone around the club has been tremendous, a complete transformation in mentality, tenacious edge and expectations has all stemmed from the Portuguese midfielder’s influence. Manchester United would totally be lost without Bruno Fernandes. A truly remarkable footballer.

The best signing of 2020? You couldn’t argue against that.

Attack:

MOHAMMED SALAH, Liverpool

It is quite staggering that Mohammed Salah already has more Premier League goals than Cristiano Ronaldo (86) in just 121 appearances. Truly astonishing. Mohammed Salah continues and continues to break records in the Premier League, and despite being rule out because of COVID a few weeks back, he’s still managed to score 13 Premier League goals so far this season. He’s also the Premier League’s leading scorer in 2020, six more than anyone else. The Egyptian is a phenomenon. The desire, the will and ambition to be the best he can be is a testament to the 28-year-old and his consistency. 19 goals and 10 assists last season as Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for a Premier League title is simply outstanding meaning he is involved in everything in Liverpool’s attack. Some may call him greedy for going for goal on his own, but can you blame a player for wanting to win everything there is to win? He’s already achieved so much at Anfield, you can’t rule him out doing it again for a second successive year this season.

JACK GREALISH, Aston Villa

Yes, many will say why isn’t Sadio Mane in this team? But like for the Declan Rice pick, I can’t have a Liverpool-infested line up, or why didn’t Son Hueng-Min make the cut? Rightly so, but a player worthy of being mentioned here is Aston Villa’s main man, Jack Grealish who also has enjoyed a truly tremendous year at Villa Park.

You could argue the midfielder was the sole reason for Aston Villa’s escape from relegation last season and no one would bat an eyelid. This is a player destined for great things, the question is can he achieve that at Villa? Who knows.

Also, his long-awaited England international debut came this year and he simply cannot be ignored in becoming one of England’s key figures in the Euros next summer. Jack Grealish is a player blessed with such tremendous and unique qualities. The way he leads by example, takes the onus upon himself in leading Villa to victory. He’s also amongst the leading chance creators within Europe’s top five leagues too, a tremendous feat for a player improving with every passing game. Grealish has got everything in his locker and is truly deserving of his place in my team of the year. A joy to watch.

JAMIE VARDY, Leicester City

Again, some will say why isn’t Harry Kane on my list, and I agree, he should be but I’ve got to go for Jamie Vardy here simply because of his stupendous consistency in front of goal despite not getting any younger. Jamie Vardy is a 33-year-old playing like he’s 26. Leicester City’s hitman is a tremendous example to any young footballer out there that your dream never dies.

He’s even an example to any striker thinking their career ends after 30, that you can still continue to hit the pinnacle of your game if you work hard and apply yourself. Jamie Vardy has done just that and is still continuing to pull up trees for Brendan Rodgers at the King Power. 11 Premier League goals in 13 games so far this season after notching 23 goals last season winning the golden boot as Leicester City just missed out on a Champions League place on the last day of the season.

At 33 years of age, Vardy is showing no signs of slowing down playing in one of the most demanding competitions in the world. There’s been so many great strikers who have graced the Premier League, and Vardy has got to be amongst that prestigious list. Inspirational.

Wildcard Honorable Mentions:

YOURI TIELEMANS, Leicester City

A superb footballer. Youri Tielemans has quickly emerged as one of the Premier League’s most consistent and assured performers and deservedly so. It’s quite astonishing that most of his work still completely goes under the radar, but maybe its best that way. Tielemans certainly holds all the ingredients needed to cut it amongst Europe’s elite. If he can lead Leicester to such graces then he’s got to be handed more praise and acclaims than he’s currently given. Efficient in the middle, fantastic on the ball, 100% work rate in every match and a vision that few in the division would kill for. Youri Tielemans is the complete midfield package. A simply tremendous footballer.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN, Everton

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s growth, maturity and improvements ever since Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Goodison Park has been nothing short of remarkable. If he carries on his current rich vein of form, there’s no reason why he can’t be on everyone’s team of the year for 2021. Calvert-Lewin has rapidly morphed into the complete striker in 2020, and already has 11 Premier League goals to his name this season. He’s also won his first international caps for England this year along with 2 goals. Is there nothing he can’t do right now? A definite wildcard honorable mention.

FRED, Manchester United

Fred has got to be one of the most improved footballers in the Premier League 2020. It wasn’t too long ago when he was getting criticized for his lack of quality and placing in the Manchester United side that many had written him off in being an established Premier League midfielder. Now he’s a key member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s progressive Manchester United and amongst the best defensive-midfielders so far this season, and remarkably even in Europe. It goes to show, when you have the trust and confidence of the manager and players around, you’d go on to thrive and reach new levels of performances. Fred has achieved just that these past 12 months.

JAMES WARD-PROWSE, Southampton

There is more to James Ward-Prowse than just his free-kicks. And while his technique and execution at dead-ball situations is something to drool over. His all-round game and abilities transcends beyond all that. 2020 has seen the stark rise of Southampton as a unit under Ralph Hasenhüttl and Ward-Prowse has been a key figure in that remarkable rise. He’s also an established member in Gareth Southgate’s England squad which is a significant feat considering his journey to become one of the most standout performers in the English top-flight. A leader among men.

BUKAYO SAKA, Arsenal

Bukayo Saka has undergone a quite remarkable year at the top level of English football in 2020, both for club and country. Despite Arsenal’s current plight so far this season, Bukayo Saka has continued to show just why he has been earmarked for greatness in the future. This is an 19-year-old is currently playing his football with admirable consistency, tremendous bravery and unique confidence all while Arsenal are currently struggling to win any matches in the Premier League this campaign. The one true shining light in an otherwise tumultuous recession for the football club. If there is one player who could help transform the clubs fortunes its this wonderkid, but its too much pressure on his shoulders. When are others in the Arsenal team going to step up like Bukayo Saka?

DANNY INGS, Southampton

If you know what Danny Ings has been through throughout his career, then you’d appreciate his astonishing form throughout 2020. 22 goals scored in the Premier League last year is a brilliant return for a forward who’s always captured the imagination throughout his career while the unfortunate injuries have gotten the best of him in the past. A true penalty-box predator, Danny Ings has shown many what he’s about this year and reminded people why he’s got to be considered one of the best goal scorers in the division right now. I really do hope he rediscovers his best form again this season. Underrated just isn’t the word for him.

CONNOR COADY, Wolves

One of the best centre-backs in the whole division, and yet most people don’t name him amongst that list. It doesn’t do his abilities and leadership any justice. Conor Coady deserves some international acclaim, and its shown in the fact that he’s been one of the first names on the teamsheet for England the past 4 or 5 months. Wolves rely on him heavily. Nuno Espirito Santo relies on him, and I’m sure Gareth Southgate does too. A remarkable defender who continues to perform consistently under-the-radar. A born leader. Does he deserve better than Wolves?

SON HUENG-MIN, Tottenham

Son Hueng-Min isn’t a wildcard option but he does deserve a special mention. He’s been absolutely tremendous to watch this year. It’s pretty pleasing to see that people are finally starting to celebrate him for the player he is this season. He deserves to be in my team of the year, and if I was allowed a 12th man, Son Hueng-Min would be a shoe in for a place. A world-class performer and a player currently on top of his game, forming one of the most lethal partnerships we’ve ever seen with Harry Kane. 11 Premier League goals and 4 assists in 14 games so far this campaign. There is simply no end to Son Hueng-Min’s superb talents. He deserves trophies and honours, lets hope he delivers them this season.
