5 Potential Centre-Backs Targets for Manchester United this Summer

5 Potential Centre-Backs Targets for Manchester United this Summer

It’s been a topsy-turvy season for Manchester United so far. After the sacking of Jose Mourinho though, they have found a new lease of life under interim manager and former United player Ole Gunner Solksjaer. It certainly feels like the shackles have been released off such a talented group of players, with 5 wins from 5, United do look like they are on the up after the turmoil that occurred under Mourinho. However, despite the upturn in form, there are a few issues which will need to be addressed this year in order for United to challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City once again.

One of those major concerns is their vulnerability in defence, and a major reshuffle is going to be needed – if not this month then in the summer. What’s striking about United’s defensive statistics this season is that they have conceded a whopping 32 goals at this stage of the season – not something you would accustom to your average Manchester United sides over the past decade. Only 3 clean sheets kept in the Premier League this season so far is a stat that would worry a lot of managers, especially at Manchester United.

Ed Woodward and Ole Gunner Solksjaer will surely be on the lookout for reinforcements at the back, here are 5 players that will certainly be on their agenda at the end of the season:

1. Kalidou Koulibaly, (Napoli)

636492152.0
Kalidou Koulibaly has been a revelation at the heart of Napoli’s defence.

One man who will be high on Ed Woodward’s list of defensive targets is Napoli’s 27-year-old Senegalese international Kalidou Koulibaly. There are various reports being thrown around stating that United have sought out Koulibaly as one of their main defensive targets for this summer. Capturing Koulibaly will be a real statement of intent from United if they are able to pry away Napoli’s most prized asset.

Koulibaly has been a rock and a revelation at the heart of Napoli’s defence since he arrived from Belgian club Genk in 2014. However, the Italian giants will not sell Koulibaly on the cheap and there are suggestions that Koulibaly’s fee could surpass the amount Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk making the most expensive defender in football history. And you wouldn’t bat an eye at the potential price if Koulibaly was to be prized away from Naples.

Right now, Kalidou Koulibaly is one of the finest defenders in the game. He is excellent at reading the game, intercepting, tackling, and showing off his speed and strength – the Senegal international has the lot. If United were to acquire his services, it will transform them from top 4 contenders to potential title winners. He’s simply that good. If you need any evidence of his qualities, you only need to look at the way he handled world-beater and Paris Saint-Germain’s wonderkid Kylian Mbappe in the Champions League this year, matching the Frenchman for pace and putting a halt to his trickery. Koulibaly had Mbappe in his back pocket, not many defenders can brag about that.

United may have to break the bank to sign him but Ed Woodward wouldn’t care. Koulibaly should be the first name on the list.

2. Kostas Manolas, (Roma)

hi-res-7f255a539dcc22f1abe8c69e830887af_crop_north
Kostas Manolas may be looking for pastures new this summer.

According to reports, Manchester United are ready to pay Kostas Manolas’ £32 million release clause which can only be activated this summer. Manolas is, along with Kalidou Koulibaly, one of United’s top targets and rightly so. The Greek international has been one of the most underrated defenders in Serie A for a number of years now. Becoming a vital component in a steady Roma side, Manolas has been a permanent fixture in the team since his move from Olympiakos in 2014.  He may not have similar ball-playing characteristics to others on this list, but what he does, he executes to perfection. Manolas is in fact calm in possession, strong in the air, brilliant at reading the game and has leadership qualities in defence for Roma, which makes him one of the best centre-backs in Serie A. United would be in for a steal if they were to capture the services of Manolas.

3. Nikola Milenkovic, (Fiorentina)

Lazio v FiorentinaSerie A 7/10/2018.
Nikola Milenkovic – touted as the next Nemanja Vidic.

Nikola Milenkovic may be a bit of an unknown quality compared to the others on this list but at 21-years-old he is showing why he is considered as one of the hottest young defensive prospects in Europe at this moment. Fiorentina will sure find it hard to keep hold of him this summer with Manchester United reportedly in hot pursuit of the young talent. The young Serbian has also somehow been compared to Manchester United great Nemanja Vidic, it may be far-fetched but the Serbian youngster is well on his way to reaching those levels especially if his move to Old Trafford does materialise.

Although he prefers the centre, Milenkovic has regularly been played as a right back this season. He has pretty much shown his versatility and it has sure been a massive improvement on his development. Milenkovic has many qualities: Pace, strength and although he may be erratic in his tackling at times, that can be worked on. What truly stands out in the Serbian is his ability to play out from the back and his understanding of the game at such a young age. It may be a gamble for United to invest, but didn’t they do the same thing when they snapped up Nemanja Vidic?

4. Matthijs de Ligt, (Ajax)

hi-res-7f255a539dcc22f1abe8c69e830887af_crop_north
Considered one of the best young defensive prospects around.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented young players in Europe, Matthijs de Ligt has inevitably been linked with a host of top clubs around Europe these past couple of months. Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus have all been linked with the Ajax defender. At this point De Ligt’s future is very uncertain, with his new agent Mino Raiola now reportedly sighting Juventus as a possible destination. Whatever club De Ligt ends up at, he is a sure fit to flourish. A fantastic defender, assured on the ball, confident in his own ability. Tall, strong, quick and also a leader at the back. Just the characteristics you’d want in your ideal defender and if United are to pursue his services, they would need to act swiftly with Barcelona and co touting his services also.

Many have tipped De Ligt to sign for Barcelona because of their ties with Ajax in terms of style and philosophy, however Barca have just signed young Toulouse defender Jean-Claire Todibo who is seen as another talented young defender. They also only just signed former Sevilla defender Clement Lenglet, so De Ligt might not be high on Barcelona’s agenda at this moment with Gerard Pique, Thomas Vermaelan and Samuel Umtiti filling up the defensive department. It looks like Manchester United may find themselves as the front runners for his signature and what better way for De Ligt to test himself, than at the highest level in the Premier League?

5. Toby Alderweireld, (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham Hotspur v PSV - UEFA Champions League
Toby Alderweireld was Jose Mourinho’s main defensive target last summer.

United fans may be wondering what might have been, had they grabbed Toby Alderweireld from the clutches of Tottenham this summer. Jose Mourinho would have been a happy man again and United may have been challenging for the Premier League title along with Liverpool and Manchester City, but it wasn’t to be with chairman Daniel Levy driving a hard bargain. Alderweireld may have signed contract extension recently but that won’t stop United stumping up the £25million needed to activate the clause in his contract. Alderweireld may just be that bridge between United and the Premier League title. His experience in a league he has spent nearly years in will prove vital for United if they were to secure his services. Why not go for a player you already know well?

Barclays Premier League Boxing Day Previews and Predictions

Barclays Premier League Boxing Day Previews and Predictions

Another festive season is upon us and we can truly say we won’t be able to enjoy this period as much without a feast of Premier League fixtures. It makes us wonder how the other countries around Europe can cope when there is no football during the Christmas period. Certainly, there are arguments being thrown on whether teams in England should have a festive break as well but if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. This is what we football fans live for, and this weeks Boxing Day fixtures serves another bunch of crackers.

Here are my Premier League Boxing Day previews and predictions:

Fulham vs Wolves

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Fulham kept their first clean sheet of the season against Newcastle on Saturday in what was very solid display. If that doesn’t show the slow progress Claudio Ranieri is making to a Fulham defence that has already shipped 40 odd goals in 18 games then I don’t know what will. They do say, if you have a solid base at the back then you are more likely to win games and that’s the foundation Ranieri should build on going into the new year. Though a clean sheet against Wolves looks very unlikely. Nuno Santo’s Wolves side have looked very good in their first season back in the top flight, their defeat to Liverpool was no surprise but they sure did put on a hell of a fight and that will surely have inspired Santo going into this one.

Fulham need the victory more than Wolves so I’m going for Fulham to just about edge this one.

Match Prediction: Fulham 2-1 Wolves

Brighton vs Arsenal

Live on

skysports-pochettino-sarri_4499037

Brighton are a very different kettle of fish on their own turf although they did put up a really good showing against Bournemouth at the Vitality at the weekend and you can’t bet against them to put in the same kind of performances against Unai Emery’s side who will be buoyant after Chelsea’s defeat to Leicester, now the race for the top 4 is looking well and truly on.

Arsenal to gain a hard fought victory in this one.

Match Prediction: Brighton 1-2 Arsenal

Watford vs Chelsea

December 26, 2018, 7:30pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Defeat to Leicester was humble surprise for Maurizio Sarri and his Chelsea squad which went to show that you cannot take an Premier League game for granted especially at this crucial stage in the season. A few weeks ago, Chelsea were well in the title picture now how times have changed, they are scrapping for a top four spot with Tottenham overtaking them in the title picture along with City and Liverpool. That loss will have now opened the door to Manchester United amongst others.

This game comes at the wrong time for Chelsea because Watford under Javi Garcia are a force to be reckoned with when they turn on the style, their win over West Ham was hugely impressive considering West Ham’s good form at the London Stadium. Physically brilliant and technically adept, Chelsea will have to battle to the death to try and rack up the 3 points here. Though, Watford have had some inconsistent spells, one game they’re brilliant to watch, the next they flatter to deceive.

You’d expect Chelsea to overcome this test.

Match Prediction: Watford 1-2 Chelsea

Burnley vs Everton

December 26, 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

We don’t know the reason for Burnley’s sour league position right now, or what it has come down to but if you know Sean Dyche, you’ll know that Burnley are always in good hands. Yeah, they are in a bit of a slump but the defeat to Arsenal over the weekend will have given Dyche more cause for optimism. With the January window coming up too, Dyche will be wanting to add more players to squad to provide him with the options needed to mount an assualt to avoid relegation.

Everton on the other hand, were outplayed, outclassed and out thought against Tottenham in their 6-2 defeat. It was an embarrassment on their part and they’ll be looking to put things right when they travel to Turf Moor on Boxing Day.

We don’t know how this one will turn out.

Match Prediction: Burnley 1-2 Everton

Crystal Palace vs Cardiff

December 26, 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

What a performance from Palace on Saturday. Absolutely magnificent. When you score like Townsend did, you just have to be on the winning side and boy did they win, emphatically. Every single player made a telling contribution and the win was no more than they deserved. What made the victory all the more impressive is how dangerous they were even without a recognised striker but that has more than been made up for with Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha as their two leaders up front, you can’t back against them causing riot to the opposition. Pacey, skilful and and intelligent movement off the ball, who needs a striker eh?

Palace will be expected to pick up another 3 vital points against Cardiff on Wednesday, who were all over the shop against Manchester United. Certainly, United’s football was mesmerising but it made soo much easier by Cardiff’s shambolic defending. Home win.

Match Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-0 Cardiff

Leicester City vs Manchester City

December 26. 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Can Leicester City cause another upset this time, against Manchester City? Who knows, what’s for certain is that Pep Guardiola’s side will be out for blood. With Liverpool now three points clear and facing the prospect of gathering much more momentum as they face Newcastle (see below), City are in desperate need of the three points after their surprise home defeat to Palace over the weekend. Will Pep now start Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero after their injury lay offs?

Leicester were luck to beat Chelsea if we’re honest. Sarri’s side should have been out sight before Jamie Vardy spectacularly notched Leicester’s winner. They may have to ride their luck once again if they to pick up another surprising three points. Away win.

Match Prediction: Leicester City 1-3 Manchester City

Liverpool vs Newcastle United

December 26, 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Wolves is a very tough place to go and Liverpool overcame that test with such consummate ease. Boy, do Liverpool look very impressive heading into festive period, their next run of games do look winnable but its on January 3rd where we will see just how good Jurgen Klopp’s side really when they come up against their closest challengers Manchester City. 3 points separate the two teams after City’s loss to Palace this weekend and Liverpool will be expected to dispatch of Newcastle come 5pm on Wednesday.

Match Prediction: Liverpool 3-0 Newcastle

Manchester United vs Huddersfield

December 26, 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Say what you want about United not wanting to play for Mourinho in the latter stages of his reign. Isn’t it the manager that creates the atmosphere around the club? Mourinho really wasn’t creating an aura where the players would enjoy themselves, express themselves and actually desire to play for the club. The impact of change certainly showed on Saturday as United ran riot against Cardiff. Solskjaer may only be at the helm for 5 or 6 months but his appointment had to be done to create a vibrant aura around the club again. United were expected to beat Cardiff regardless of Mourinho or Solskjaer, but it was the manner in which they dissembled and dismantled Cardiff’s defence told its own story. Solskjaer is the man for the job, if only temporarily.

Huddersfield are in a bit of a rut at the moment, and after their victory at Wolves, you would have thought they’d turned a corner but injury to their captain Aaron Mooy may hamper their prospects of boosting their points tally as we approach the festive period. The way United are playing at this moment, it may be a daunting task. Home win.

Match Prediction: Manchester United 3-0 Huddersfield

Tottenham vs Bournemouth

December 26, 2018, 3:00pm

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

Tottenham were brilliant in their 6-2 win over Everton. The job Mauricio Pochettino is doing at the club is truly remarkable which makes you wonder why he would ever ponder leaving a club with a huge future and he being key to those plans. Certainly, the pull of being Manchester United and Real Madrid coach may prove really tempting but why not be the man to take Tottenham to that next level providing he gets the financial backing by the clubs chairman Daniel Levy to further strengthen the squad and he successfully captures a trophy that has eluded Tottenham for nearly a lifetime. Who’s to say this Tottenham team can’t challenge City and Liverpool for the Premier League come May?

Another manager doing such an impressive job is Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe who has been touted to become Tottenham’s next manager if Pochettino swaps North London for Manchester. If that was to occur then Tottenham fans may not have any cause to be unhappy at Pochettino’s departure as Eddie Howe has shown season after season since Bournemouth’s arrival in the Premier League that he has what it takes to manage at the top level and Tottenham would be just the place to hit it off. Bournemouth always struggle when it comes to playing Tottenham, and that may continue on Wednesday.

Match Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Bournemouth

So’ton vs West Ham

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

This should be a very good spectacle. Southampton look a reformed side under Ralph Hasenhüttl who has managed to change the vibrancy an positive aura in Southampton’s play and atmosphere. Back to back wins over Arsenal and Huddersfield has certainly changed the mood around the club, and a win against West Ham will Southampton’s confidence even more. West Ham, on the other hand, on the back of their defeat to Watford really need to pick up the points in this one. Pellegrini’s side were very unlucky in the game against Watford as they caught goalkeeper Ben Foster on a very good day. With West Ham’s quality, you can’t back against them spoiling Southampton’s run of form. I’m going for a score draw though.

Match Prediction: Southampton 2-2 West Ham

Gabriel Jesus Issues Timely Reminder to Pep Guardiola

Gabriel Jesus Issues Timely Reminder to Pep Guardiola

After a difficult start to the season scoring only once in thirteen games in the Premier League, Gabriel Jesus ended his goal drought in style against Everton on Saturday proving that he remains a valuable alternative for Pep Guardiola…

Fit-again Sergio Aguero was sat amongst Manchester City’s star-studded subs bench, and with the imminent introduction of the Argentinian goal scorer looming, Gabriel Jesus was surely running out time to seize his opportunity.

The Brazilian on an astonishing four month barren run without finding the net had failed to impress Guardiola in any of the four opportunities presented to him at the expense of Sergio Aguero, raising a few eyebrows considering his mightily impressive record for Manchester City since his arrival from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras in January 2017.

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768
Gabriel Jesus celebrates his first Premier League goals since August.

31 goals in 74 games in all competitions represents a successful 2 years so far in his Manchester City career for Gabriel Jesus. However, this season has proven difficult for the Brazilian, not only scoring on a consistent basis but not getting the game time has has desired due to the continued brilliance of Sergio Aguero. Despite scoring three times in the Champions League this season, it is domestically where Jesus has struggled to capture his best form. Whether its do with his lack of game time or consistent run in the starting XI remains to be seen.

Before Saturdays game, the pressure was surely mounting on Jesus to deliver a performance that will have reassured Guardiola – particularly with the temptation of the January transfer window looming. Sergio Aguero’s robustness and fitness will have been a concern for Guardiola, and the with the hectic festive period of fixtures coming up, City really needed Gabriel Jesus to rediscover his clinical scoring touch.

Gabriel Jesus addressed those concerns with style on Saturday. After failing to score with his previous 18 shots, Jesus beat Everton keeper Jordan Pickford with both of his attempts.

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768
Jesus notches the first of his two goals.

The first goal the pick of the bunch, receiving Leroy Sane’s pass after some good movement and confidently converting with his left foot from a tight angle. That’s what Jesus does best, being at the right place at the right time along with his excellent movement off the ball, showing why he is regarded as Brazil’s main no.9 for many years to come. His record for the both club and country just represents those beliefs in his ability. The second goal against Everton, a rare headed goal once again finding himself in between Everton’s defenders, highlighting his predatory instincts in-an-around the penalty box.

Jesus ends his goal drought

Gabriel Jesus’ goal was his first in the Premier League since August, ending a run of 11 games, 487 minutes and 18 shots without one.

With City cruising at 3-1, the final moments of the game saw Jesus trying everything he can to get his hat-trick. While a customary match-ball eluded the Brazilian, it was a confidence boosting afternoon for City’s popular young striker. Both goals exhibiting Jesus’ constant knack of finding spaces that defenders try to close off , not only that but his ability to be in the right place at the right time, a trait commonly associated with some of the best strikers ever to grace the game. Craig Bellamy on Sky Sports singled out the Brazilian for praise after the game making reference to his footballing intelligence, even at such a tender age and learning under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola means there are only so much more heights that Jesus can aspire to as his career develops. The goals may have been hard to come by as of late, buts its his incredible work rate and his desire to be on the end of crosses and passes that has forced Guardiola to keep faith with the Brazilian, which was duly rewarded this weekend.

Guardiola may well reshuffle his frontline as City take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup quarter-final midweek but with those two goals under his belt, the pressure has been eased on Guardiola to hurry Aguero back in to action. There is no disputing the fact that Aguero will win back his spot for the forthcoming games but that will not stop Gabriel Jesus from improving and delivering when an opportunity presents itself. Saturdays performance showed Gabriel Jesus still has it in him to deliver when City can’t call on Aguero.

Whatever doubts Guardiola had about Jesus before this weekend, will have surely been forgotten once the final whistle blew at the Etihad.

5 Things We Learned From the North London Derby

5 Things We Learned From the North London Derby

Arsenal produced a relentless and enthralling attacking performance as Unai Emery tasted his first North London Derby with an impressive and deserved win over Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 19 games, moving above Spurs into the top four.

Here are the five takeaways from a pulsating encounter:

It’s a ‘Brave New World’ for Arsenal

When Arsenal were 2-1 down at half-time, you wouldn’t have backed them to overturn the scoreline if this was a game played last season under Arsene Wenger but my, how things have changed at the Emirates under Spanish coach Unai Emery. This victory and display over an impressive Tottenham team – buoyed by their victory over Chelsea last week and Inter Milan midweek in the Champions League – reflected the outstanding and progressive work that Unai Emery has done since succeeding Arsene Wenger.

From the first minute, Arsenal were all over Tottenham Hotspur, carving apart the defence with such vigour and aplomb and even finding themselves ahead as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang comfortably dispatched his penalty after Jan Vertonghen stupidly handled in the area. Certainly, Arsenal have been singled out for their slow starts this season, but on this evidence, those unpopular traits looked to have been disintegrated.

What also was impressive of this Arsenal performance was their confidence on the ball and the ease at which they dominated Tottenham’s star studded midfield. Under Wenger, many a times were Arsenal passive and slow out of the blocks over the past couple of seasons but Emery has successfully moulded his side into a team that is very difficult to overcome – hence their 19 game unbeaten streak. Arsenal have shown such vast improvements since their opening defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea. It’s a Brave New World for Emery’s Gunners.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is Unstoppable

skysports-pierre-emerick-aubameyang_4506768

I don’t know what you thought of Aubameyang’s second goal but, for me, that finish was out of this world, pure class from a player who is on top of his game. An instinctive, incisive and predatory finish – reminded you of a certain Thierry Henry or even Robin Van Persie in their Arsenal hey days. That’s now nine goals in the league so far for Aubameyang and on this form you wouldn’t back against him to stop Harry Kane’s Golden Boot glut come the end of the season. What’s even more impressive about the Gabon superstar is his incredible knack being in the right place at the right time much highlighted by some of his goals this season. The pressing from the front and hunting down lost causes is breathing much new life into the Arsenal attack.

Lucas Torreira the new Patrick Vieira

skysports-pochettino-sarri_4499037
Lucas Torreira capped a wonderful display with his first Arsenal goal.

My oh my, what a player Unai Emery has on his hand in Lucas Torreira. Signed from Sampdoria shortly before the World Cup this summer. His performance in Russia was sure to have got Arsenal fans excited before the season got under way and boy has he backed up that excitement so far. Finally, Arsenal have themselves a dogged and bullish defensive midfielder. Ever since Patrick Vieira left Arsenal in 2005 have the club been on the search for a midfielder of the same mould and quality but to no avail. It has taken Arsenal 15 years to find a suitable replacement, and boy do have they found him in the Uruguayan. A workhorse, terrier and not only that but it his calm and assured ability on the ball that makes Torreira the perfectly balanced midfielder in Emery’s weaponry.

The Premier League may just have another Kante on their hands. The Uruguayan was at his fluent and rugged best all mixed into one, and even finding himself on the score sheet for the first time and what a game to get it and cap off such a masterful performance in front of the Arsenal faithful. Emery may have on his hands a future Arsenal captain. Money well spent.

Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth Endure a Torrid Afternoon

You have to feel for Tottenham in this game after their impressive comeback just before half-time but even despite their efforts, Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth endured such a difficult afternoon. From the first minute, they were put to the sword as Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi swarmed all over them. Tottenham were overpowered in by their own game. Such is Tottenham’s nous and suitability to playing out from the back, you always had to wonder why Pochettino did not start Toby Alderweireld. On this evidence, we can assuredly come to the conclusion that the Belgian is indeed Tottenham’s best centre-back. Pochettino can only imagine what could have been had the club sold him to Manchester United this summer. From Vertonghen’s silly handball to award Arsenal a penalty to his absurd tackle on Alexandre Lacazette, the performance of both Tottenham’s centre-backs were root cause of Tottenham’s downfall in this game.

Emery Subs Changes the Complexion of the Tie

skysports-pochettino-sarri_4499037
Alexandre Lacazette’s introduction was key in Arsenal’s turnaround.

The introduction of Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey at half-time was a masterstroke by Unai Emery. Both players were tasked with occupying both of Tottenham’s centre-back while Aubameyang was given the license to roam around. Tottenham’s defenders just couldn’t live with the industry and movement of both Lacazette and Ramsey. As soon both players came on to the field, you could sense that Arsenal could turn things around. Those substitutions gave Arsenal gave a turbo-charge and boy, was it massively effective.

It was said the true test of Emery’s work would come when they faced their closest rivals. This was an examination they passed with flying colours. Onward and Upwards for Unai Emery and his Arsenal side.

Tottenham Defeat Underlines Maurizio Sarri’s Need For a Plan B.

Tottenham Defeat Underlines Maurizio Sarri’s Need For a Plan B.

Maurizio Sarri knew the real test was to come. He had predicted upon his arrival this summer that the going will really get tough in his first three months of his reign. Though, that prediction has proved futile with Chelsea going 12 games unbeaten heading into Saturdays London derby with Chelsea. Many had even tipped Chelsea to join the leagues strongest title contenders according to public opinion – Manchester City and Liverpool.

Chelsea have looked mightily impressive in these first few months of the season winning eight of their 12 games so far. Not even Sarri himself would have predicted such a start to the season, with his players comfortably and swiftly adjusting to his ‘Sarri-ball’ philosophy; high pressing intensity, intricate passing and a huge emphasis on attacking football – a huge shift from his predecessor Antonio Conte. Whatever changes and tinkering Sarri forced unto his side after last seasons domestic disappointment really worked a treat – not forgetting Eden Hazard’s re-emergence and major output into much of Chelsea’s play. The signing of Jorginho – the man central to much of Sarri’s success at Napoli looked to have the same sort of impact.

Despite all of Chelsea’s early success, Sarri still had the courage to play down Chelsea’s title challenge despite keeping in touching distance with the two favourites for much of the early stages of the season. Saturdays derby against Tottenham highlighted many reasons as to why Sarri remains pessimistic about Chelsea’s chances. It was the real test that Sarri kept on revelling about. Now we will find out just how good the Italian coach is.

skysports-pochettino-sarri_4499037
Frustrations boil over for Sarri’s men.

Nobody would have expected Chelsea to come this far unbeaten. However, there is the old saying that whatever goes up must come down and Mauricio’s Pochettino’s impressive Tottenham side inflicted the kind of derby defeat that would have had any other manager in the opposite dugout worried. The draw at Everton and Saturday’s defeat handed out one key lesson for the rest of Chelsea’s upcoming opponents. Stop Jorginho and you stop Chelsea.

For certain, Eden Hazard is Chelsea’s talisman and the star name in the line-up but there aren’t many players who you can say is the heartbeat of a side so much so that when you target them, the whole team stops functioning. That element was certainly the case at Wembley on Sunday. Jorginho – the heartbeat of this Chelsea side, the player that keeps things ticking over, the cog in a well oiled machine. The Italian midfield maestro is primarily the reason for Chelsea’s unbeaten start. Tottenham Mauricio Pochettino addressed that area of concern for his mean and executed it to perfection, the same area Everton coach Marco Silva expertly focused when his side gained an impressive point at Stamford Bridge. Then it was Richarlison giving the duties to keep tight on Jorginho, on Saturday it was Dele Alli’s turn to follow suit and boy, did he do it with aplomb, scoring the opener in what was a masterful showing from him and his team mates, which took Tottenham to within two points ahead of their London neighbours in the Premier League standings.

Nevertheless, Saturday’s defeat was a huge wake up call, if anything, for Maurizio Sarri and highlighted his need for a plan B if ever Jorginho gets marked out of the game once again. At times, after he netted the opening goal, Dele Alli was almost man marking Jorginho and the former Napoli midfielder could not find any means to respond with the pair almost coming to blows at one point during the game. Not only did Pochettino’s game plan halt the genius of Jorginho but it also poured out the pressure on N’Golo Kante who this week was rewarded with new five-year contract at the club worth £300,000-a-week. However, the French terrier finds himself in an unfamiliar position in Sarri’s system. No longer the workhorse in the middle, the player primed with the responsibility to break up attacks and keep it ticking in the middle, it is instead Jorginho who has been handed those duties. Much of Chelsea’s play hinges on the two midfielders – either side of Jorginho – whether it be Kante, Mateo Kovacic or Ross Barkley to roam forward and link-up play with the three attackers – a role Kante has never been familiar with. Tottenham addressed that weakness with distribution was never being Kante’s acumen, forcing him into errors and giving the ball away in key areas.

skysports-pochettino-sarri_4499037
There was no stopping Son-Hueng Min in his individual brilliance for Tottenham’s third goal.

It should have been Kante chasing down Hueng-Min Son in his own half, but instead he was caught high up field as Jorginho was left trying halting Son’s marauding run, to absolutely no avail as the South Korean winger ran riot and killed off the whole spectacle. A sight to behold. The dribbling, technique, awareness and the composure to simply pass the ball into the back of the net below the despairing Kepa. A goal once again highlighting the underrated qualities of Son Hueng-Min, a player not liked by some but very much appreciated by the Tottenham faithful. Mauricio Pochettino knew the threat Son would cause, no wonder he was desperate to have not have the player go off on International duty with South Korea during the break, and it paid off with a scintillating display – what’s even worse for Chelsea is that Son should have at least got himself a hat-trick.

What’s for certain is despite Chelsea’s brilliance this season, Maurizio Sarri still has a lot to learn on the back of this defeat to their London rivals. The Italian must now work out another formula in case any of his rivals figure out his tactical approach to games. Though to give him the benefit of the doubt, this is a squad he has inherited bar Jorginho and there will be a lot of time for Sarri to put his own stamp on the squad heading into the future. We are all pretty certain a striker would be on Sarri’s main agenda as Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata have struggled to grab a hold of their opportunities and its only a matter of time before they’re replaced.

Sarri’s honeymoon period is officially over. Now the hard work really begins if Sarri really is to mount a serious title challenge.

Barclays Premier League Week 9 Previews and Predictions

Barclays Premier League Week 9 Previews and Predictions

As we approach another week in the Barclays Premier League – Gameweek 9 – after the International break, many of us will be wanting to get back to our Fantasy Football once again after a week break. A week which saw the whole nation stand up once again in their impressive 3-2 win over Spain in their own vicinity. Southgate’s men putting in a performance that would have had us fans itching for the Premier League to resume as soon as possible.

Well, this Saturday our wishes come true as the weekend starts off to a flyer with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United travelling to Maurizio Sarri’s in-form Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. A game that should have pulses raises even if we’re only nine games in, but it is a game that has many implications as will be addressed during this Barclays Premier League Week 9 Preview:

Saturday’s Fixtures:

Chelsea vs Manchester United, (12:30pm)

download
Chelsea have started the season in impressive form – 20 points from a possible 24.

Yeah, we’re only nine games in, but this is a massive game. A game that could have huge ramifications come Saturday lunch time. Chelsea in need of a victory to further embark on their strong push for a title challenge in what has been an impressive start for Maurizio Sarri in his first season at the helm. What’s impressive about Sarri’s tenure so far is how quick his players have adapted to his philosophy and its further helped by the explosive form of Eden Hazard – the Premier League’s top scorer with 7 goals heading into this weekend’s game.

Chelsea cannot allow this season’s favourites City and Liverpool to slip away at the top of the table whereas on the other hand Mourinho and his men are in need of a victory to build on their nail-biting 3-2 win over Newcastle. Let’s be honest, it hasn’t been a good start for United by an means, and a win here at Stamford Bridge – something they have achieved only once in their last 10 trips here – could be the statement win Mourinho needs.

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
Sanchez’ winner against Newcastle couple weeks back may have saved Mourinho his job, can United build on this?

In such a high pressured, eagerly anticipated fixture, these are the games Mourinho thrives off, he may have reportedly been close to the sack had they not won against Newcastle but could that win be the turning point? The kick up the backside for Mourinho’s men? We’ll find out.

Though I feel Chelsea may just have too much for United, Hazard to prove the difference here. Do not rule out a Mourinho masterclass though…

Match Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Man United

Bournemouth vs Southampton (15:00pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
Bournemouth have started the season in impressive form finding themselves in 6th place.

I know this may be cliche already, but what a tremendous job Eddie Howe is doing at the Vitality stadium. They have started this season in brilliant form finding themselves in 6th place. Not only that, but you could see the progression in their play and Eddie Howe’s stubbornness not to divert from his style and stick to his guns regardless of if his side are winning or not. A lot of people have discussed Eddie Howe’s chances of moving to a top club in future but have people thought about the prospect of him staying and building a dynasty at the club and probably taking the club to Europe. That will be Howe’s plans moving further, what are Bournemouth ambitions this season? Just how far can Eddie Howe take his men this season?

Southampton on the other hand find themselves in a dire situation with only 5 points from a possible 24 rotting away near the relegation places. Certainly, we’re still at the start of the season, but you can’t help but feel a sour note surrounding the club. No doubting Mark Hughes’ qualities as a coach but it seems as though he is cutting it thin at St Mary’s. There is no real urgency or penetration in their play at this moment in time and Hughes may be running out of time to sort out their mess.

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
Can Mark Hughes turn around Southampton’s fortunes?

Bournemouth to run away with it here.

Match Prediction: Bournemouth 3-0 Southampton

Cardiff vs Fulham (15:00pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
A must win game for Cardiff this weekend.

This is a must win game for Cardiff. If they struggle to beat Fulham on their own turf then will really struggle to beat the drop this season. Hats off to Neil Warnock for his effort so far but do Cardiff really have the quality, the know how or maybe even that goalscorer that can make all the difference when it comes to fighting relegation? I really don’t see it at all right now. You can’t really see where Cardiff will get their first win from, and Fulham are no pushovers despite their recent loss of form after an impressive start to the season.

Cardiff were one of my picks to be relegated back to the Championship and my prediction may be on the ball if they continue to struggle as they are. Fulham though, after their battering defeat at home to Arsenal will have angered boss Slavisa Jokanovic. They were so open and left exposed at the back as Arsenal tore them to shreds in their own back yard. Fulham do have the quality up front with Mitrovic, Andre Schurrle, Ryan Sessegnon and Luciano Vietto the pick of the bunch but its at the back which needs work and this International break will have provided Jokanovic with the opportunity to shore up it up.

Fulham to nick this one.

Match Prediction: Cardiff 1-3 Fulham

Manchester City vs Burnley (15:00pm)

DFRNA1lXoAASWu9
Manchester City will be expecting to be victorious heading into this weekend’s fixture.

This is a nightmare game for Burnley. Sean Dyche will want to get this one out of the way quickly and restart again next week. Man City trounced Burnley by 7 goals in the corresponding fixture last season at the Etihad and Sean Dyche will hoping and praying City are much more lenient this time around but you won’t find Pep Guardiola complaining as they try to garner as much points as possible heading into a very busy couple of months.

Man City shoe-in victors in this one. You can bet your mortgage.

Match Prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Burnley.

Newcastle vs Brighton (15:00pm)

DFRNA1lXoAASWu9
Newcastle squandered a 2 goal lead at Old Trafford losing 3-2 in an epic encounter against Manchester United.

Gutted. Hopeless. Embarrassed. Distraught. These are the feelings Rafael Benitez would have felt after United’s comeback at Old Trafford couple weeks ago. Newcastle were two nil up and comfortable at half-time only to surrender their efforts. Benitez is in desperate need of a victory here which would be their first of the season, however they are up against a resolute and stable Brighton side who are in such good hands in manager Chris Houghton, though they are not the best side away from the Amex Stadium and win against his old club would be priceless. Though I get the feeling Benitez and his Newcastle side will get off the mark in this one.

Match Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Brighton

West Ham vs Tottenham Hotspur (15:00pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
Can Pellegrini master another impressive performance at home against one of the big boys?

The second biggest game of the weekend in my view. A massive London derby. West Ham and their supporters will be up for this one like they were in their draw against Chelsea and the very impressive 3-1 victory over Manchester United. You can see what Manuel Pellegrini is trying to instill into his place and at the London Stadium. Yes, it isn’t Upton Park but if West Ham can garner even some of the fear factor then they could be a force under Pellegrini – we seem to forget the fact that the Argentinian coach has a winners medal in his cabinet. He Surely needs the time to rebuild a team that has lost its competitive edge these last two years.

Tottenham on the other hand have had a really mixed start to the season, yes, they find themselves in 5th place right now, but their lack of activity in the summer just seems to have dampened the mood around the club, and you may feel it may come back to bite them in the end. We’re already finding that out in Europe. You need reserve quality at your disposal if you are to challenge for trophies and looking at Tottenham’s bench, you just can’t spot any. Another top four finish would be an impressive feat for Pochettino. They do have the quality to.

Though, I think West Ham may snatch this one. Exciting game in prospect.

Match prediction: West Ham 2-1 Tottenham

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Watford (15:00pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
Wolves have the quality and manager to secure even a top eight finish this season.

I’m looking forward to this game. Wolves are my favorite to watch in the Premier League, and Nuno Santo has got them playing with fluidity, excitement and confidence. From the start of the season, I said Wolves are good enough to finish in the top eight and I am sticking by that prediction. With Ruben Neves and Jao Moutinho in your midfield, you can really achieve anything. Watch out for Wolves this season.

Watford this season have been too inconsistent so far this season. Ever since their defeat to United at Vicarage Road a few weeks ago, they haven’t looked the same. Bournemouth taught them a real lesson last time out and they are need of some redemption. Can Javi Garcia get Watford back on track in this game? I don’t think so.

Match Prediction: Wolves 2-1 Watford

Huddersfield vs Liverpool (17:30pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
With Salah and Mane out injured, this could be Sturridge’s opportunity to stake his claim.

Liverpool will have too much for Huddersfield in this game. David Wagner may feel his side can improve on their home form of late but Liverpool do mean business this year and Klopp would expect no less than a victory here to further stamp their authority against the likes Manchester City and Chelsea. There may be no Mane or Salah in the matchday squad on Saturday but Liverpool should come out victorious even despite Huddersfield’s poor form.

Match Prediction: Huddersfield 0-3 Liverpool

Sunday’s Fixture:

Everton vs Crystal Palace (16:00pm)

DFRNA1lXoAASWu9
Richarlison has the ability to be Everton’s main man this season. Marco Silva has a second chance to put it right.

Wilfried Zaha is injured. Which means Crystal Palace are injured, and you wonder how Roy Hodgson and his side will cope without their star man who was injured on international duty with Ivory Coast. The stats do not make telling reading regarding their points total without Zaha in the side. His explosiveness and skill just seem to take Palace to another level at times, how are they gonna cope against a resurgent Everton at Goodison?

Everton’s victory over Leicester was one they desperately needed. If you look at their squad, Everton should really be aiming for top six, but the question remains whether Marco Silva is the man to really take the club to the next level.

Goodison will be a happy homecoming this weekend.

Match Prediction: Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace

Monday Night Football:

Arsenal vs Leicester (20:00pm)

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h
With these two in their arsenal, the Gunners may be a force to be reckoned with this season.

All praise must got to Unai Emery for Arsenal’s stunning form so far, nine wins from nine represents a more than steady progression for Arsenal which makes us ponder what Emery can acheive in his first season at the helm. Another prestigious Europa League trophy wouldn’t go amiss after his remarkable three honours with Sevilla. Why not a domestic trophy, either the FA Cup or even the Carabao Cup would be a huge success for the Spanish coach. The Premier League would be too much a step for the gunners but with Aubameyang and Lacazette as their main front men, they may just cause some real problems.

Leicester on the other hand have too inconsistent under Claude Puel so far this season. What does the Frenchman need to fix in order for the 2016 Premier League champions to become a mid-table force once again. They have enough quality in their squad but Puel is failing to strike the balance right at this moment. One player really impressing right now is James Maddison. Losing Mahrez in the summer was a huge loss but Maddison has taken on the creative mantle like a duck to water, he could be Leicester’s key man providing he remains fit throughout the season.

Match Prediciton:  Arsenal 3-1 Leicester City

Lionel Messi’s Mastery Knows No Bounds

Lionel Messi’s Mastery Knows No Bounds

On many occasions over the last decade at the grandest club stage of them all – the UEFA Champions League – have we witnessed such wizardry, artistry and moments of brilliance that some times you just have to sit and watch in such awe – and maybe gawp a little, too. The best athletes in the game give us a glimpse of their individual brilliance on a night that promises so much each time a Champions League game comes along or even, when the famous anthem is played. What we witnessed on Wednesday night though was mesmeric, a player who week-in, week-out gives the whole world a taste of his very own wizardry.

After a week of an unsettling aura surrounding the Barcelona camp, having not picked up a victory in their last 3 games – call it a crisis if you want – many believed Tottenham would never have a better opportunity to face last seasons La Liga champions. Some even suggesting that Barcelona may come up short once again this season in the Champions League. However, judging by Wednesday’s performance on English soil, Tottenham suffered such a harsh lesson in the realities of Europe’s biggest club competition. Succumbing to the realization that it can be very frightening at the top, as Barcelona’s genius Lionel Messi highlighted the idea that Tottenham may never come across another player with such a creative power and divine force as the Argentinian great.

Barcelona-news-Lionel-Messi-Tottenham-1026537
Lionel Messi blows a kiss to the Barcelona fans.

Lionel Messi enforced his artistry and greatness with a performance that we the audience have been accustomed to since he stepped onto the scene. Scoring a couple, hitting the post twice, and also involved in the other two goals. Menacing his opponents all night with his dribbling, unerring passing and his telling eye for goal. If Messi didn’t have such brilliance with the ball at his feet and his genius knack of finding the back of the net with such great regularity, he would probably be the best midfielder on the planet. Certainly, we the audience have become so used to his ability to weave and dance his way around defenders but another component he has – without any fault – added to his game is his frightening vision and passing. The departures of Iniesta and Xavi left a gaping hole in the Barcelona passing industry but Messi has taken on that role along with his own masterful duties with a sheer and consummate ease. The pass for Jordi Alba leading up to the first goal inside two minutes was just absurd – picture perfect even.

As stated in the above tweet, because Messi has come to England and showcased his awesomeness as well pulling the same sort of performances in La Liga every week which hardly ever gets noticed or even admired once again highlights the idea that the Barcelona magician may just not be appreciated as much as he should be or if I am correct in saying – as much as his fierce counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo is.

If anyone’s ever uttered the words, “Lionel Messi would never cut it in the Premier League” – they may need to rethink their stance if they check out the Argentinian’s stats against English sides in Europe. “He shows in every game why he is Messi. His average performance is this type of game.” said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino after witnessing Messi’s artistry. Lionel Messi may always draw comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo – who has conquered both England and Spain and is now over in Italy with Juventus – but Messi has shown time and time again that even if he was to be a Premier League player, he could conquer it just as easily as Ronaldo did. The Argentinian has scored 22 goals and delivered 6 assists in 28 games against England’s finest. If you think not playing in the Premier League precludes him from the GOAT tag, you may need to re-evaluate your opinion.

Lionel Messi versus English clubs
Club Appearances Goals Assists
Arsenal 6 9 1
Chelsea 10 3 3
Liverpool 2 0 0
Man City 6 6 2
Man Utd 4 2 0
Tottenham 1 2 0

If you look back at his performances against those English clubs over the years, his performance against Manchester United who won the trophy the previous year in the 2009 Champions League final also captured the imagination of the whole world. During that year Ronaldo was heralded as the best player in the world after his brilliance won United the trophy in 2008, the fact that the two great players took to the field on that night added another layer of excitement to that final in the Italian capital. His majestically taken headed goal past Edwin Van Der Sar in the United goal, rising head and shoulders above the lanky Rio Ferdinand – like he was ascending to heaven for his glorious performance – stealing the show as Barcelona marched towards the grandest European prize.

f595bbca87aa14_595bbca87aa51_thumb
Lionel Messi puts the icing on the cake as Barcelona triumphed over Man United in the 2009 CL final in Rome (2-0).

His four goals against Arsenal in 2010, another example of the heights and feats that Lionel Messi has reached in his over-illustrious career. The 2011 Champions League final against Manchester United again at Wembley, the little magician put in the same performance as he did on Wednesday night, bringing United back down to earth after Rooney had dragged United back into the spectacle. Another glorious goal dribbling his way through before firing an unerring shot past Edwin Van Der Sar – the dutch goalkeeper looking helpless. These are the kind of nights that Lionel Messi revels in, he was born and created for moments like this.

10 goals, 4 assists in 9 games already this season shows that Lionel Messi yet again, means business. The Argentinian stated as the season started that Barcelona would attempt everything in their power to recapture the Champions League trophy, a prize that has eluded them since 2015. Messi may be sick of the sight of seeing his El Clasico rivals Real Madrid rivals lifting the famous trophy three years in a row. Wednesday nights antics reinforced the levels that Messi will reach to try and get his hands on that trophy. Tottenham witnessed that ruthless streak – and its only the second group game of the campaign. Nobody should be surprised at the panic that set into Tottenham’s defence, because even by Messi’s standards, it would be difficult to think there could be enough superlatives in existence to comprehend Messi’s mastery. There are times where it seems as though Messi is only on this earth to visit.

Liverpool-and-Everton-are-interested-in-Presnel-Kimpembe-630595 (1)
Lionel Messi celebrates scoring the first of his two goals against Tottenham at Wembley.

After Kane and Lamela had dragged Tottenham back into the game after their second-half onslaught, Messi settled it in the 89th minute. Working the ball to Alba who then tried a cut-back to Luis Suarez who expertly dummied the pass into Messi’s path before the Argentinian coolly and calmly stroked the ball into the bottom corner. The relationship between those two is absolutely mesmerizing, almost like Suarez plays for Messi, also goes to show how much Suarez appreciates playing with Messi. It was yet another night where Messi took all of the plaudits, he was at the heart of everything. His slaloming 40-yard run which took him past Alderweireld then Davinson Sanchez before caressing the ball unto the post, it would have been yet another majestic goal. The Argentinian was toying with Spurs like he was orchestrating an eventful puppet show.

The idea that Spurs were on their way to pegging the game back to 3-3 almost felt bewildering given the way Barcelona dominated certain spells of the game. Barcelona were both exhilarating and at times vulnerable. But they were so superior, that nobody could question the conclusion that Barcelona deserved the victory on the night.

Messi’s ability to create his own space, play at his own pace, a talent he does not relinquish even if he was playing walking football, made him the central figure. Tottenham couldn’t even get close. It was a night Lionel Messi produced his irresistible moments of control, vision and tenacity, swiping the Tottenham defence aside like a cobweb languishing around a window frame. We are truly privileged to live in a time of Lionel Messi. A majestic wizard and an artist on the football pitch. Can we say he is better than Maradona? Is he the greatest player we’ve seen? Well, that’s a debate for another day. What’s for certain and that not one single person on the planet can argue about – whether knowing the genius of Messi or not – is that his mastery knows no bounds.

A truly tremendous player.

The Emergence of James Maddison

The Emergence of James Maddison

When Spain met England at Wembley couple weeks back, a few aspects of their game will have been a real sight to behold for England coach Gareth Southgate. It was the wealth of talent and weaponry in new Spanish Coach Luis Enrique’s arsenal that would not only have had Southgate drooling but the whole English support sweating at some mesmerizing football they could only dream of.

Certainly, Southgate will have come up against some talented opposition during his short stint with England so far, but against Spain, Southgate would have wished he could just suck the talents out of the opposition and harness it within his own. Without a doubt, Southgate’s own pool such as Kane, Lingard, Alli, Rashford and Sterling can certainly mix it with the best but they are no match for what Spain have their own arsenal: Thiago, Koke, Asensio, Isco, Rodrigo, Busquests, Saul Niguez. These are household names that all have the tactical and technical acumen to mix with the World’s elite. More importantly, is all of these names are certain starters in the club’s first XI.

DFRNA1lXoAASWu9

That’s what separates England and the rest. If you attempt to identify the youngsters in and around the top nations squads, you’d realize that most of those players are performing week-in-week-out for their respective clubs – a recurring issue Southgate is so desperately trying to address as he attempts to revamp and reshape the whole England set up. Players such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Marcus Rashford and John Stones – players who are progressively on their way to maximizing their potential. However, the problem is at this moment in time, they are not guaranteed starters for their respective clubs.

Nonetheless, what’s really in need of a solution in Southgate’s system is the problem of creativity, only five of their 12 goals at this summers World Cup came from open play. Despite their heroics and inspired performances, you felt there was still that lack of quality and that cutting edge/thrust that would have made a telling difference. Against Croatia in that semi-final defeat, England needed someone of that quality and guile. Like players such as Thiago showed on that night at Wembley. A player renowned for his playmaking abilities, his forward-thinking style of play and the nous to pick the right pass at the right moment, dominating the whole spectacle as Spain – despite their failures this summer – showed once again why their class is permanent.

Gareth Southgate has highlighted since England’s return from the tournament the need to find the player or even playmaker that can conjure up something out of the ordinary. Someone in the image and ilk of Paul Gascoigne – someone who would take games by the scruff of the neck. Whether that comparison may be a stretch of the imagination, it is an aspect well worth dreaming of. Up until now, numerous names have been thrown into the hat; players like Phil Foden of Manchester City, Mason Mount at Derby, on loan from Chelsea, Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham and Jaden Sancho, former Manchester City youngster now plying his trade in the Bundesliga at Borussia Dortmund.

These are players who are on their way to fulfilling their potential if guided and coached in the right way. Though, if we’re being optimistic about which names should be considered, it is Leicester City’s James Maddison (discussed briefly by Paul Merson and Alan Smith in the above clip).

Real-Madrid-Social-AP
James Maddison has blossomed since his move to the King Power this summer – Can he stake a claim in Southgate’s plans?

Signed from Norwich over the summer, the England Under-21s star enjoyed a fabulous season in the Championship last term scoring 15 goals and laying on eight assists. Maddison’s impressive form caught the eye of the England set-up joining up with the Under-21 in 2017, receiving a call up and making his debut against the Ukraine Under-21s. Not only did that cap off a brilliant season but he was rewarded with the Norwich Player of the Season gong.

Earning his stripes in League One with Coventry City – thrust in the deep end at the tender age of 17 – Maddison has quietly but efficiently worked his way up the ranks and showing that persistence does eventually pay off. Like players such as Harry Maguire, John Stones and Kyle Walker who have plied their trade through the lower leagues, James Maddison is looking to follow suit and make a name for himself on the biggest stage. It’s early days yet, but Maddison seems to have made a seamless and steady transition from the Championship after departing Norwich City for a fee of around £24million. With 2 goals and an assist already in all of the 5 Premier League games he’s featured in, Maddison has already started to set the King Power alight. It was his brilliant performance in the Premier League curtain raiser against Manchester United at Old Trafford that was the hallmark of what Southgate is trying to unlock in that creativity department. Maddison’s composure, movement and bravery on the ball in one of the grandest stadiums representing the giant and bold steps that Maddison has taken to get to this level.

DFRNA1lXoAASWu9
James Maddison caused plenty of havoc against United in the curtain raiser – putting in a top display on his first Premier League outing.

Many players would have stuttered under such spotlight on their debuts but that wasn’t the case for Maddison as he was Leicester’s main source of creativity in an impressive team performance despite their 2-1 defeat. What’s more pleasing for Maddison is the fact that he has carried on that form until now, against Liverpool at the King Power he was again Leicester’s main attacking threat in another 2-1 defeat. Leicester may not have started the season as they would have liked but it is Maddison once again stealing the spotlight despite Leicester City’s struggles so far this season.

In the short clip shown above, Paul Merson and Alan Smith discussed whether Maddison is good enough to feature for England in the near future, drawing the conclusion that it may be too soon for the 21-year-old, probably needing more games under his belt at Leicester if he is to have a chance. Yes, he only made the step up from the Championship this summer and it may be a very bold one. However, Gareth Southgate may have to cast his net wider – Maddison may just be that creative link England are missing. No doubt about it, he is a tremendously gifted player. Brilliant with both feet, brave on the ball, his vision and passing abilities a rare commodity certainly for English midfielders in this day an age.

Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are also wonderfully gifted players but none of them hold the composure and the true passing capabilities that can maybe unlock a tight defence. Maddison has shown on numerous occasions already so far this season that he may hold the key.

f595bbca87aa14_595bbca87aa51_thumb
Maddison has quickly adjusted to life at Leicester City.

Paul Merson stated it may be too soon for Maddison, but was it too soon for Marco Asensio for Spain? What about when Mesut Ozil made his debut for Germany – he was rarely a known quantity until his call up to the squad. Gareth Southgate has stressed his desire and need to look for England’s next Gazza. Certainly, Phil Foden has been talked about a fair bit, but he is not getting regular game time at Manchester City while Maddison is. Why not take a gamble and opt for the Leicester City man? Maddison may not look as slick as Kevin De Bruyne, as quick and strong as Manchester United’s Paul Pogba or as silky as David Silva, but the former Norwich man has that deceptive yard of pace that allows him to ghost past players with ease. Not only that, but he has those capabilities of finding a telling pass or even dribbling towards goal himself. Very rarely did we see any of those traits during England’s heroics this summer.

Seen potentially as a direct replacement for the departed Riyad Mahrez, Maddison is already showing signs that his rapid step up to the Premier League may have been just the right one for him. The former Norwich man has shown that persistence and hard work pays off, now the question for him is whether he can maintain his current form and become the player that he has long been touted to be since his Coventry City days at the age of 17. 5 games into his Premier League career, Maddison is showing no signs of letting up. Gareth Southgate may just have to take that gamble.

5 Things Jose Mourinho Must Consider as The Premier League Resumes

5 Things Jose Mourinho Must Consider as The Premier League Resumes

As the Premier League resumes this weekend after the International break there will be a lot to ponder for various clubs and their managers, none more so than Jose Mourinho. The Manchester United manager has faced much scrutiny as of late, and the first international break of the season will have allowed the Portuguese coach to ponder on his plans to turn around United’s fortunes before they play high-flying Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday. Two wins and two defeats after four games leaves United languishing in 10th place. Before the Premier League resumes, what would Mourinho have considered in order for United to climb the table? Here are the five things Mourinho must address to take United out of their slump:

Permanent Centre-Back Pairing

Liverpool-and-Everton-are-interested-in-Presnel-Kimpembe-630595 (1)
One major problem Jose Mourinho has to ponder on is the issue of his centre backs. Throughout the summer United were linked with a whole host of centre backs, mainly Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, ex Barcelona defender Yerry Mina – who joined Everton on deadline day and Bayer Munich’s Jerome Boateng. The one position Mourinho was desperate to strengthen above everything else, could not be completed for one reason or another. United were actively interested in Alderweireld for some time, but a deal could not be reached with Tottenham – a missed opportunity if anything else. Now Mourinho must settle for the defenders at his disposal, Lindelof and Bailly and may have been the dream partnership for the Old Trafford, but their abysmal performance at Brighton in the 3-2 defeat at the Amex seems to have them lose the trust of Mourinho. So who can the Portuguese really depend on until January at least in order for United to correct their recent slump? Despite the number of options at his disposal, it seems as though Mourinho has a huge task on his hands.

Ponder on his best XI

On many occasions during his tenure as Manchester United manager has Jose Mourinho flirted with chopping and changing his approach to certain games, forgetting the idea and importance of having a settled first XI. Certainly deploying specific players to counteract the threat of the opposition is a worthy tactic. However, Mourinho must pick his best eleven, trust and stick to it like Guardiola did to great effect last season. Jamie Redknapp highlighted after the Brighton defeat that Mourinho still does not know his best eleven after over 2 years at the club and that is a major issue. The fact that he constantly chips and changes highlights the lack of trust he has in his side, but with the quality at his arsenal, picking a stable side should not be a problem. If Mourinho aspires for a major trophy this season, having a stable and settled side is the ingredient to success. Just ask Guardiola.

How to get Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez firing again

Arguably two of the most talented players in Jose Mourinho’s squad – Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez – are at a crossroads at this point in their partnership. Literally. On numerous occasions during last season have both players not had the ability and connection to fully work together. For players with so much quality you would have expected harmony between them within an instant, but the interplay between the two has at times been non-existent. Whether its to do with Mourinho’s tactics or both their inabilities to work together – United fans will be praying its the former. With so much uncertainty surrounding Paul Pogba’s future and happiness at the club, and the stop start period Sanchez has been through at United, Mourinho must find a way to get Pogba and Sanchez playing in the kind of connection and togetherness that United fans have been dreaming of since Sanchez’ arrival in January.

Style of Play

DNOmMP0XcAAl48h

We all know the many debates and topics that have been thrown around concerning Jose Mourinho and side, its those stories regarding Mourinho’s style of play. Those people at the centre of those debates aren’t wrong. If you look at the other top sides in the division, you just know how they are gonna play, their identity and what they are trying to do as a unit. On the other hand there’s Manchester United, and then you’re left wondering, what do we associate with their football? You look at Klopp’s Liverpool, and you know how they’re going to set up, likewise Manchester City and Pochettino’s Tottenham. Yes, three trophies during his time at the helm is impressive, but we can’t really say Mourinho has changed anything in terms of the clubs identity and style. If Mourinho aims to take United to the top again, he must reassure the fans of the identity and plans he has in store for them. The Theater of Dreams needs its aura back.
