Leicester City completed the permanent signing of AS Monaco and Belgian international midfielder Youri Tielemans last week after his successful loan spell at the King Power last season – a four year deal believed to be in the region of £40m, making him the clubs record signing. 

Tielemans, aged 22, was involved in 9 goals (3 goals, 6 assists) in 13 Premier League appearances after arriving on an initial six-month loan in January. Tielemans becomes Rodgers’ third summer signing after Ayoze Perez joined from Newcastle in a £30m deal and full-back James Justin completed his move from Luton Town.

With much of the summer centred around the future of Harry Maguire and his potential proposed move to Manchester United, you just knew Brendan Rodgers will be working in the background refining his squad as the former Liverpool coach plans another surprise assualt in the Premier League. If the departure of Harry Maguire is causing uncertainty around the City of Leicester, then the permanent signing of Youri Tielemans is sure to end that pessimism and excite the Leicester faithful once again.

Youri Tielemans may have struggled in France during his time at Monaco, but as soon as he stepped foot at the King Power in January for his six month loan, it was like he’d been plying his trade in the Premier League for much of his career. Before January, Leicester had been missing that added bite in midfield, with Wilfried Ndidi, James Maddison and youngster Hamza Choudhury able bodies for Brendan Rodgers to utilise, but it was that creative and composed style that they desperately needed and the signing of Youri Tielemans is the perfect ingredient.

His arrival in January was seen as a major coup for the Foxes. On many occasions, regarded as one of the brightest young midfielders in Europe especially when he started out for Anderlecht at the age of 16, it was then that he was immediately thrown into the first team and Tielemans has never looked back since then. It is a testament to the Belgian international’s qualities and its one of the reasons why he has been part of the Belgian set-up for so long, making his international debut at the tail end of 2016 in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Just under 3 years on, after minor setbacks in the move to Monaco which didn’t bear as much fruit as he would have hoped, Tielemans now finds himself at the centre of a revolution, a club that is looking on its way up and once again looking to put in a major assault on the top six next season. Finally, the Belgian midfield orchestrator finds himself at home hoping to be a part of team on the cusp of doing something special under Brendan Rodgers – who himself will be aiming to right his own wrongs in a division he left in 2015 after being relieved of his duties at Liverpool.

Nonetheless, Tieleman’s impact at the King Power has been immediate – no need for a bedding in period. Standing at just 5ft9in, the Belgian architect doesn’t hold the most meanest or domineering frame, however, what he lacks in height, he makes up for in his technical abilities – using his small frame to his advantage when evading challenges and getting out of tight spots. What is equally impressive about his game, is his incredible first touch that allows him the opportunity to dictate play and to control the tempo at whatever speed he desires. When you watch Tielemans week-in week-out – as joyous as it is – you can perfectly see why he will be so imperative to Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City project.

Also very adept in his dribbling, and tackling. Tielemans holds the full package when it comes to your archetypal modern-day midfielder. Great in possession, skilful in his dribbling, calm and collected in his passing and also holds the unique ability at unlocking defences at will. Before, James Maddison was the only player capable of being so pivotal in the final third, but now Brendan Rodgers possesses another player fully blessed with the ability to master the art of the ‘eye of the needle’ pass. Tielemans creative impact in the final third was striking and clearly evident in his assists especially the pass for Vardy’s strike against Watford in Rodgers’ first game in charge. Picking up the ball on the half-way line, driving forward and then picking out an exemplary pass dissecting Watford’s defence at will, like something out of the parting of the Red Sea.

He’d only been at the club a mere six months and his understanding with the other key players in the squad is simply outstanding – with James Maddison especially, probably the most creative pair in the Premier League and its a weapon Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to get the best out of next season. Another example of Tieleman’s brilliance is his assist for Harvey Barnes at the London Stadium against West Ham. Excellently controlling a pass fired into him, killing the ball dead and then lifting his head up to spot the run of Harvey Barnes, and then expertly threading a smart pass through a corridor of West Ham defenders – a pass perfectly weighted enough for Barnes to strike the equaliser without the need for a first touch. It was simply exquisite.

It’s that kind of quality which makes you wonder why Leicester were given a free run at securing his signature when all of the top six sides could have done with Tieleman’s brilliance in midfield.

If there is one blip or blemish in Tieleman’s ability is his sub-par performances for Monaco during his time in France. However, he did start 20 of Monaco’s 22 games prior to his switch to the King Power, scoring five goals and assisting once. A decent return for a player struggling to find his feet at the club, but a further testament to the ability and professionalism that Tielemans holds.

The fact that Leicester have moved quickly to secure Tielemans’ future is a further representation of the importance he will hold to Brendan Rodgers’ squad and system, and with the £30million signing of Ayoze Perez from Newcastle gives Rodgers another dimension to his attack. Not only can Perez become effective up-front but his work rate, off the ball movement and tenacious energy means he is more than capable of filling in when needed on the wings especially on the right which means Leicester will be filled with an industrious energy and pace on both wings with the likes of Demarai Gray, Ben Chilwell, Ricardo Pereira and the addition of Perez allows Rodgers side to be dangerous both on the counter-attack and when trying to break down stiff and sturdy defences. The fluid movement of Vardy, Gray and Ayoze Perez is just what Tielemans and Maddison need. Give either of these creative outlets space and time, and they will more than likely execute something out of nothing in order to unlock the space in behind defences.

Brendan Rodgers now holds a squad – including a couple more additions this summer – capable of executing a major assualt on the Premier league’s top six and it is definitely a squad that may just be as good as the one that famously won the Premier League in 2016. In Wilfried Ndidi, Rodgers holds a player exerting similar characteristics to N’golo Kante who was a vital component in that 2016 winning side. With Tielemans and James Maddison busy strutting their stuff in the final third, Ndidi will be tasked with breaking up play, recovering possession and screening in front of his back line – a role he has expertly done ever since his introduction to English football. A perfectly balanced midfield, and with the added composure and youthful exuberance in Hamza Choudhury, Rodgers holds a finely tuned and talented midfield he can call upon. That’s not to say the Northern Irish coach doesn’t require a couple more astute additions in that area and with the future of Harry Maguire unclear, there will still need to be some fine tuning and moulding done in able for this squad to challenge for a Champions League place.

Nevertheless, the signing of Youri Tielemans represents a massive step in the right direction, a player blessed with much skill, technique and qualities that a few in his position can only dream of. This coming season may just be the start of something new for Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City – a potential match made in heaven – and the Belgian international Tielemans will be at the centre of any ambitions that Rodgers holds for this fresh, finely balanced and talented squad.

Leicester City may just cause another famous surprise this coming season. This Revolution may indeed be televised.

 

Manchester City completed the signing of Atletico Madrid and Spanish midfield enforcer Rodri after the Etihad club paid his release clause making him the clubs record signing.

Representatives for Manchester City travelled to La Liga’s headquarters in Madrid to make a payment of £63million (€70m). The 23-year-old has stated previously it his dream to play under Pep Guardiola and the City boss has been interested in the Atletico midfield enforcer for some time and also sees him as the ideal replacement for Fernandinho in defensive midfield.

According to various Spanish reports, Rodri had grown concerned at the style of play deployed at the Wanda Metropolitano and the lack of ambition under Diego Simeone. Regularly touted as Sergio Busquets’ successor in the Spanish midfield, Rodri registered 84 appearances for Villareal before making a £22million move to join Simeone’s side in May 2018.

Born in Madrid, Rodri initially joined Atletico Madrid’s youth setup in 2007 at the age of 11, from boyhood outfit CF Rayo Majadahonda. However, he was released in 2013 for lacking physical strength which led him to subsequently sign for Villareal CF. There he bounced from adversity, bursting onto the scene in late-2015 where he made his first team debut against Spanish outfit Huesca in the Copa Del Rey. His next three appearances were in that competition, but his maiden La Liga appearances finally came against Rayo Vallecano coming on as a second-half substitute for Denis Suarez, in which he put in an impressive short cameo despite the game ending in defeat for Villareal.

It was in that defeat, that Villareal unearthed a midfield gem. His first-touch, movement, understanding of his positioning, composure in possession and anticipation in defensive scenarios was so clear to see – looking like a young Sergio Busquets. A player who Rodri who has been compared to on many occasions since his debut for the Yellow Submarines. Of a similar build, stature and height to the Spanish legend, you could see why the comparisons are so vivid and accurate.

After three seasons at Villareal, Rodri returned to the club who released him for his lack of a physical structure, exactly the type of player that Simeone was indeed looking for when Atletico triggered his release clause of £17.8million last summer. Arriving at the Wanda Metropolitano with only one cap under his belt, Rodri came into Simeone’s side expecting to be the backbone and lieutenant that Simeone once held in the form of Gabi, a player who was an anchor in midfield for Atletico over the past 5-10 years. Combative, tenacious, workhorse and also a calming presence when in possession of the ball – the kind of characteristics Gabi held that Simeone saw in Rodri.

It was last season that saw Rodri enjoy his impressive breakthrough season, adding another five caps for Spain becoming the anchor that both club and country needed. He seamlessly slotted into Simeone’s line-up breaking up play, dominating midfield battles and providing Atletico the assurance when in possession on the ball. There is no doubt about it, Rodri will be a huge miss for Atletico despite the disagreement both player and manager had on the style and ambition of the club. However, Atletico Madrid have moved swiftly in the market to replace the midfielder, signing Real Madrid’s young talent Marcos Llorente – a player of similar abilities to Rodri and a player capable of filling the gap left by the former Villareal man.

 

For City though, Manchester City have yet another impressive recruitment on their hands and have potentially signed a player capable of quickly settling in and becoming the creme of Pep Guardiola’s tantalising crop. And once again, City have managed to address a pressing need in the heart of their midfield, with the ageing Fernandinho (34) coming to the twilight of his career and the future of Ilkay Gundogan still unclear, Guardiola has deemed it necessary for City to sign a player of such class and quality and a player that could be gracing the City colours for a number of years.

 

 

The 2019 transfer window has been rather captivating so far for Chelsea replacing their manager, Tottenham already making a statement signing, and Manchester United and Arsenal both trying to secure that can quickly elevate them back to where they belong in the pinnacle of English football. But for Liverpool and Manchester City – the two best from last season – its been rather slow. But while it seems it may stay the same for Liverpool, Manchester City have have just broken their transfer record and have probably just completed the most astute signing of the signing in Rodri. He becomes the fifth most expensive signing to join the Premier League.

On the evidence of the comments above made by reputable and knowledgeable reporters, it looks as though Manchester City have already captured another Premier League before a ball has even been kicked. Yes, Rodri is a special player. A special player in his own right. Compared to Sergio Busquets on many occasions over the past few years. However, if you’ve watched Rodri closely, there are subtle differences in both players games, while Busquets uses his positional acumen and awareness, Rodri is more mobile to strut around the lines of midfield reclaiming possession and bringing counter-attacks to a complete halt. It has been said that Rodri is more likely the more athletic version of Busquets. That in itself is frightening, considering the kind of levels Busquests has reached over the last decade.

Rodri may not much in terms of his goal threat. 3 in 47 appearances for Atletico and only once the season before with Villareal. But with the calibre of players he will be playing alongside, he doesn’t need to worry about going on a goal blitz here and there, all Rodri will need to worry about is defending his defence and that he does expertly and with such vigour and aplomb. As a defensive midfielder, Rodri is said to be outstanding by his contemporaries, and given the state of play in and around Manchester City’s issue in defensive midfield, slowly phasing out the ageing Fernandinho will be smooth sailing for Pep Guardiola.

Technically sound, calm and collected in possession, bullish without it and a tenacity that certain midfielders of the modern era can only dream of. Rodri is and will become a player of true class and quality. Under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, City may have a player capable of becoming probably even better than his Spanish predecessor and counterpart Sergio Busquets. A testament to the kind of work Manchester City are undergoing and completing behind the scenes in terms of recruitment. These are the kind of players that are a true representation of Pep Guardiola’s philosophy and the incredible identity of the blue half of Manchester. City now hold quality in every area of the pitch, and with the re-signing of academy product Angelino from PSV Eindhoven – another gifted player at left-back – Guardiola and his men are well on their way in trying to become the best in Europe for the first time in their history.

Leicester City have reportedly turned down a £70m bid from Manchester United, according to Sky Sources.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to add an experienced top-level centre-back to his squad and Harry Maguire holds the qualities and characteristics that the Manchester United legend is looking for. It has been made aware of Harry Maguire’s desire to seek pastures new this summer. However, Leicester City are of course refusing to budge and are sticking to their £90million valuation of the England international.

It has been reported that Manchester United have moved ahead of City in the race for Maguire and their bid of around £70million is a reflection of the kind of lengths the club will go to securing their top targets this summer. With 2 signings already secured with the capture of both Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, Solskjaer has made it his priority to complete his summer dealings by the time United start their pre-season preparations in Australia.

Maguire, who has also attracted interest from Pep Guardiola’s City, signed a five-year-contract last September, so its only right Leicester demand a high fee for former Hull City defender. Brendan Rodgers has made it known that his development will be better served at the King Power. Providing Maguire does leave Leicester City before the season starts, he may have a big decision on his hands on whether to ply his trade at Old Trafford or play under the guidance of Pep Guardiola at Premier League champions Manchester City.

So where will Maguire decide to go if he leaves the King Power? Here are the cases for joining either Manchester clubs that Maguire would need to weigh up:

Who wouldn’t want to play for Manchester City right now? The prospect of being under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola would be an attractive proposition and one not only Harry Maguire would jump at the opportunity but other top players in Europe. Last season, Guardiola’s men became the first team to complete the double since Manchester United achieved the feat in 2009. Providing Maguire joins Guardiola’s evolution, he could be given the chance to win his first Premier League title come May 2020 and also provide a telling contribution to an unprecedented treble Premier League wins consecutively. Something Manchester City have not achieved before.

We already know the quality Harry Maguire possesses and it has been clear to see over the past year especially in last years World Cup. Not only dominant through his tall physique and frame but the former Hull City player is impressive when in possession of the ball. The bravery and confidence of carrying the ball out of defence and also the ability to rake 60-yard pass across the pitch would become a vital tool to use for Guardiola. However, one thing that Guardiola would look to cut out in Maguire’s game is his constant knack of putting his team-mates in danger by playing the ball in dangerous areas even in his own penalty box. Maguire has indeed a enjoyed a rapid rise but his game could be taken to yet another level under Guardiola and with the departure of Vincent Kompany, City are in need of a leader at the back. Put both clubs as potential options for any player, and they will more than likely choose Manchester City right now but it is still too difficult for some players to turn down the prospect playing under the lights of the Theatre of Dreams. Yes, United will be plying their trade in the Europa League next season, but it doesn’t stop Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trying to rejuvenate and bring back the culture, traditions of the club. Let’s be real, United are going through an identity crisis currently but improvements are already being made with the signings of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James from Crystal Palace and Swansea City respectively keeping in line with the plans of recruiting young, fresh and talented British players. Harry Maguire could find himself at the centre of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rebuild, and not only that but have the same sort of impact that Virgil Van Dijk is enjoying at Liverpool. Maguire could be the key component in a United revival next season.

The fact that United are willing to shell out £80million for Maguire’s signature is a clear indication that Solskjaer is desperate to improve his shaky defence. Maguire could be the answer the Norwegian needs. Not only would Maguire have a massive impact on United’s defending but also in their all-round play especially if Paul Pogba stays at Old Trafford next season. No longer would the Frenchman be forced to star attacks from his own half, instead he could find himself at the focal point of passing moves now that he finally has a defender capable of picking him out in between the lines. A player of Maguire’s abilities in defence sitting alongside another quality and capable ball-playing defender such as Victor Lindelof is a team that is built to complement the abilities of Paul Pogba.

United are also in dire need of a leader at the back, and Maguire could become another option as captain and that too would be an attractive proposition for him, to become a Manchester United captain like the greats of Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane and David Beckham.

Harry Maguire was a target for Jose Mourinho last season, though United were not willing to shell out £75million for his signature then, but we are currently seeing a much improved player and Maguire could prove to be worth every penny if Solskjaer was to secure his services this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele for a fee of around £65million.

After several months of speculation regarding the future of Tanguy Ndombele, with Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United along with Tottenham all rumoured to be scouring for his signature, it looks as though Ndombele has chosen his ideal destination. The fee eclipses the £42million paid for defender Davinson Sanchez from Ajax two years ago. Also, marks Tottenham’s first major signing since they completed a deal to bring in Brazillian Lucas Moura in January 2018.

Despite the fact that Tottenham Hotspur have been inactive in the market for over a year, Pochettino has still managed to achieve much of the unthinkable with a squad that has been stretched thin for a long while. Reaching a first Champions League final even without the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli for much of the second half of the season. Although, those achievements have masked much of the problems facing the club in terms of money for recruitment – a result of their new stadium and debts – Pochettino now feels the time has come for the club to seriously look at strengthening the squad enabling them to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title.

Pochettino has stated previous that the club needed to be more ambitious in the market like their Premier League counterparts if they are to achieve their ambitions of winning a major trophy whether in Europe or domestically. For the last five years, Tottenham have become a case of ‘nearly-men’, putting on worthy and complete performances which heightens the hopes of their fans only to then see a momentous run towards the pinnacle of the Premier League slip through their fingers whether by a shock defeat or a sucker-punch draw. Whatever the reasons are for those disappointments, whether it’s the mentality of the players and staff or the lack of quality in an around the squad to maintain a fruitful challenge will certainly need to be addressed throughout this summer.

The signing of Lyon’s midfield linchpin Tanguy Ndombele is a step in the right direction and a sure sign of how far Tottenham will go to fulfil those dreams and aspirations. At £65million Tottenham feel that Ndombele will swiftly come in and become a huge asset to squad that has been in dire need of some injection and added bite. After the loss of Belgian Mousa Dembele, 6 months ago, Pochettino has missed a player capable of dictating play in the middle and using his sheer strength and power to muscle their way through tight spaces. Not only that, but a player capable of threading a pass that dissects a tight-knit defence within an instant. Much of those characteristics have been lacking in Tottenham’s play, so much so that Pochettino has at times forced his most creative player Christian Eriksen to sacrifice his own creative duties within the final third to dictate play from deep. Certainly, Eriksen is capable of performing that role but you have to feel his efforts are far suited further up the field assisting the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli.

Well, Tanguy Ndombele is the answer to those frailties in the middle. A player capable of being effective both in the final third and within the defensive phases of play. You only to check out the clip below:

A fine player to watch. You could see in some clips his abilities on the ball and his knack of executing the kind of passes that will have Tottenham fans purring over. It was his performances against Manchester City in both games in the Champions League group stages that really captured the imagination of the whole crowd. It even made City coach Pep Guardiola stand up and take notice as the French international controlled and dominated the whole of the pitch as Lyon ran riot at the Etihad Stadium in September. It was on that night, Ndombele came of age. This is a player well on his way to stardom and by the various links to Manchester City, Juventus and Manchester United, you could tell the calibre of player Spurs are desperate to add to their ranks.

A very modern, all rounded centre-midfielder who adds significant bite and panache in all phases of play in possession, out of possession and also in defence and attack. Regularly deployed as a midfield pairing along with fellow French counterpart Lucas Tousart or even Houssem Aouar – another player who garnered much acclaim and praise from Guardiola on that night.

It is a pairing that adds drive, hard work, grit, control and a real tenacious edge both in the tackle and when in possession. Tanguy Ndombele ticks all the boxes in what you would desire in your archetypal modern-day midfielder. He has a real eye for a defence splitting pass as seen on many instances in his all rounded display against Manchester City. The French international was a joy to behold on the night. Aside from his passing, he is a real powerhouse when driving with the ball, so much so that it is impossible to retrieve the ball once he is in full flow – a quality that saw Mousa Dembele excel for Spurs under Pochettino even if he lacked the quality in the final third.

Tanguy Ndombele both drives through the middle like Dembele and can also become just as effective in the final third with his instinctive thinking and excellent creativity especially when under pressure. What will also become a vital tool for Pochettino when deploying Ndombele is whenever Tottenham play the ball out from the back – a tactic held in much regard by Pochettino – rather than just passing their way through an opponents high-intensity pressing, they now hold a player capable of overcoming that pressure with his brilliant dribbling skills and incredible close control. Like Yaya Toure or Patrick Vieira in their own glory days. Tottenham now possess a player who can drive them up the field without the need of trying to play risky passes in between the lines in order topple an aggressive pressing unit.

On top of all that, Ndombele is a tireless worker. Tottenham have been criticised heavily for their constant knack of switching off in midfield late on in games which then blows their lead as a result, but having a player who is constantly on his toes throughout the whole game will be a heavy wake-up call for his fellow teammates. His ability to cope when pressed largely stems from his dribbling proficiency. In all competitions this season, he averaged 5.05 dribble attempts per 90 minutes. That figure is unique for a central midfielder and for some perspective check out Tottenham’s other midfield stats, Eric Dier averages 0.47, Victor Wanyama 1.67, Harry Winks 2.01, and Christian Eriksen 2.05.

Moreover, what is equally impressive is of every player to complete at least 50 dribbles in Ligue 1 last season, Ndombele had the best dribble success rate, at 68.5 per cent. By way of comparison, Neymar completed just 52.5 per cent of his dribble attempts, Kylian Mbappe 48.2 per cent and Hatem Ben Arfa 52 per cent.

The Frenchman will not be particularly inclined or tasked with assisting or scoring but he certainly plays a part in everything leading up to an opportunity or a goal. He makes more forward passes per 90 minutes than any other Spurs midfielder, as well as making more passes in the final third. His dribbling abilities matches that of Moussa Sissoko, however, the Tottenham midfielder is not nearly as complete and creative as Ndombele and his stats over the past season tells its own story. Ndombele always receives a pass having the intention and nous to go forward, and that is his priority. Tanguy Ndombele is by no means the finished article. However, at the age of 22, he is a player that is performing well beyond his years. He is far more a box-to-box midfielder than a traditional holding deep-lying playmaker but what’s unique about him is that he can carry out both roles to perfection. A midfield trident – providing Tottenham are unable to make any more midfield additions – of Ndombele, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko could offer real blend of creativity, control and sheer power. £65million is a huge amount considering the fact that club is really hell-bent on keeping its spending to a minimum after the £1bn new stadium, but Ndombele is an investment for the future, a player real worthy of taking Spurs to the next level and also a player who can almost single-handedly inspire Pochettino to a first trophy at the club.

Just only two years ago, Ndombele was plying his trade in the French division and look at how much of a difference two years makes. His rise to stardom has been stark and is now finally a fully fledgling international for last summers World Cup winners France. If this impressive trajectory continues for the midfield powerhouse, he could become the start of a new and improved era for Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino. Watch this space.

 

There you have it, after weeks of speculation Paul Pogba has publicly declared of his desire to seek a new challenge away from his so-called ‘beloved’ Manchester United – words he used upon his return from Juventus. After such a torrid end to the season in which correlated with United’s poor form. The French superstar now feels he’ll be more valued elsewhere and rightly so, after receiving horrid abuse from his own supporters in United’s season finale defeat to Cardiff at Old Trafford. Whether that is a major factor for his decision remains to be seen, but it seems as though Pogba has been hell-bent on this solution for a long while.

To put things into context, Pogba has endured a topsy-turvy season himself. Much was made of his place and role in the team once the season started under Mourinho and a mountain of questions were asked as to how the ‘Special One’ could successfully get the best out of him in a team that relatively felt unbalanced. Mourinho knew that. Before the season even started which was the reason for his snide, pessimistic and downbeat press conferences. The Portuguese wasn’t backed as he hoped he would and it gradually took its toll on the players and most significantly partly led to the training ground rift between Paul Pogba and the ‘Special One’, the result of a jokey social media post placed online by Pogba apparently after the Carabao Cup third round penalty shoot-out defeat to Frank Lampard’s Derby County. After clarification from his staff that the video was posted during the game rather than after, Mourinho still took it upon himself to create an argument with the French superstar. Whether that was the final straw for Pogba, ultimately leading to his decision now, remains to be interpreted.

In all honesty, the first half of the season was disastrous and that was further reflected in the defeat to Liverpool in December, a game that saw Paul Pogba dropped after also being stripped off the captaincy. Ultimately, it was the final straw for Jose Mourinho who was sacked following the defeat – much to the apparent amusement of many of United’s key players especially Paul Pogba who was rumoured to be the key factor in Mourinho’s downfall. Either sack the manager or get rid of Paul Pogba. Woodward went with the former and it was a small victory for Pogba and co.

Let’s be honest here, Mourinho had to go, his negative demeanour and careless body language was not doing the club any good from a image perspective, it was like a dark cloud was hovering over the club. That cloud was immediately lifted after the appointment of United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his instalment as United’s interim boss led to an unstoppable upturn in form for both the club and Paul Pogba, embarking on a sixteen game unbeaten run. United were imperious, Paul Pogba was at his dominant and fluent best, probably the best his shown throughout his three years at Old Trafford. He finished the season with 16 goals and 9 assists from midfield – his best ever season to date, but still it was a season Pogba still left a lot to be desired. As soon as Solskjaer was made permanent coach, the whole team dropped, the form dropped, and as captain it was Pogba’s job to keep his team-mates motivated until the end.

Now that Pogba has declared his desire to leave, where does that leave Manchester United? What happens next? Will Pogba still be a United player come August? Who will he join providing he leaves? Who can replace the French World Cup winner? These are questions which will require answers in the coming weeks of the summer. There is no doubt about it, Pogba will be a huge miss for Solskjaer, such is the need for United to demand an astronomical fee of around £150million if United are to sell.  It is reported that Pogba would prefer to head back to Turin with Juventus despite the strong interest from Real Madrid. What will be closely watched this summer is how United plan to replace him, or is there a really a plan? Much has been made of the need for United appoint an astute Director of football, something that has been talked about for since last year. United no longer hold the pulling power they once had, and that is down to the man upstairs Ed Woodward.

What United have as a CEO, is not a footballing man, but a business one. Whereas the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Liverpool have those in charge making decisions based on their footballing knowledge. United’s Woodward is basing his own on his business acumen. The signings of Radamel Falcao, Angel Di Maria, Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku, only two of which have some sort of success during their spells at the club: Ibrahimovic and arguably, Paul Pogba. These are signings with the tag ‘square pegs with round holes’ kind of deals. Signings based on shirt sales, and the merchandise rather than signing players who can fit into a system or philosophy. It’s been the hallmark of much of United’s deals since the days of Alex Ferguson and David Gill. These decisions are hurting the whole structure and reputation of the club, and the fact that United will be playing Europa League football next season doesn’t help their cause in the slightest. You can almost forgive Pogba for wanting to leave, and he no longer sees a fulfilled future at a club that is no longer holding the desire to continue being the country’s number one club. That tag is now being held at our cross city rivals. Jealous much? Certainly.

As a United fan, I am incredibly frustrated at the nature of the transfer that has been haunting our club for the last three years. No thought process, no structure, no plan and no philosophy. You could see why we have underachieved for so long. Paul Pogba was supposed to drive United to a new era when he arrived in 2016. So far, he’s looked nowhere near the consistent and dominant player I thought he would be. Changing games instantly, grabbing a game by the scruff of the neck. Apart from the start of this calendar year which saw United go through that impeccable run, Pogba has largely been disappointing, only impressing in spurts rather than the consistent and week-in, week-out performances we’ve been long been expecting.

However, its not always on him. The team around him is poor, not up to the quality he wants and not up to the standards that he so regularly enjoys playing with when of international duty with France. As stated previously, the team is unbalanced and its not built to complement Pogba’s style of play. Look at the game against Manchester City at Old Trafford for example, the Frenchman was so frustrated with the fact that he had to drop back to pick up the ball rather than receiving it in dangerous pockets of space. United lack that kind of defensive midfielder or a centre-back capable of breaking the lines with a slide-rule pass. The one player capable of doing that is Lindelof, though he can’t do it on his own. United’s first rule of thought this summer is to sign a centre-back who can instantly come in and improve such a shaky back-line – like Van Dijk has so remarkably done at Anfield.

Kalidou Koulibaly, Toby Alderweireld, Matthijis de Ligt, Harry Maguire or even Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar. These are the sort of centre-backs United should be breaking their backs to sign. These are the sort of calibre defenders that would instantly improve and sharpen United’s back-line, not only that but would become the backbone of what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is so desperate to implement into his own philosophy at United.

Whether Ed Woodward will be able to get these kind of deals over the line remains to be seen. Since the end of last season, United have been linked with every name under the sun but none of that means anything if Woodward is to continue his stubborn ways in the transfer market. For example, the potential deal to bring Aaron Wan-Bissaka in from Crystal Palace has dragged on for too long now to the point where fans are even questioning whether Palace’s star man last season is even worthy to solve United’s full-back frailties. Palace want a reported £50million, and the United CEO has bid £35million and the rest with add-ons. Farcical.

Wan-Bissaka on last seasons evidence – a quality right-back in his own right – is an investment for the future and £50million for his kind of quality could be a bargain. A further reflection of the lack of pulling power they so used to enjoy.

 

West Ham have completed the signing of Villareal and Spanish Under-21 playmaker, Pablo Fornals in a deal worth around £24million making him the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history behind Felipe Anderson, who cost £42m when he joined from Lazio last summer.

The capture of Pablo Fornals represents a significant statement of intent from both Manuel Pellegrini and the club as a whole with the midfielder regularly touted as one of the brightest prospects in European football. Also very well known to Pellegrini who was also on the books of Malaga as a coach from 2010 – 2013, though Fornals was plying his trade in the youth setup while Pellegrini was in charge of the first team.

So what are the origins of West Ham’s new addition?

Born in Castellon de la Plana, Valencian community, Fornals joined Malaga’s youth set-up in 2012 at the age of 16 from CD Castellon. The 23-year-old is only four seasons into his relatively short career so far having spent two of them at Malaga and only just recently completing his second season at Villareal. Fornals made his top-flight debut for Malaga in 2015 as a 20-year-old when he played in the impressive 0-0 draw against Real Madrid then two months after scoring his first competitive goal in a 2-2 draw with Granada finding the net just four minutes after coming on as a substitute. Later that year, making his mark on the scene once again scoring a brace against close rivals Valencia in a 2-2 draw.

The Spanish hotshot then moved to Villareal in the summer of 2017, officially starting out his footballing journey as a youngster signing a five-year contract and in mid January 2018, he got his first calendar year with the club off to the perfect start with a wonderfully chipped goal from a swift counter-attack in the clubs first ever win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Before all this, he was called up to the Spanish squad for the first time by Vicente Del Bosque having made ten appearances for the Under-21 side. A further representation of the kind of talent Fornals harnesses that Del Bosque was so desperate to utilise within his star-studded Spain squad.

What can Fornals bring to the West Ham table? 

Pablo Fornals is a player with an array of flair, technique and skill. A player Manuel Pellegrini will surely be licking his lips at the prospect of making the most of as the Chilean coach intends on building a side capable of causing a disruption to the so called ‘top six’. Over the past couple seasons, West Ham have fallen short of those lofty aspirations of a Europa League place. It must have been even more damning for the club to see Wolverhampton Wanderers who were only promoted this time last year take the English flight by storm and as a result securing their place in the Europa League which resumes in September. No one could have even imagined their outstanding campaign but much of there success draws on sound recruitment and a connection pool that is well renowned – something West Ham have been desiring for so long.

It may have been leaving Manuel Pellegrini asking and answering numerous questions as to how a squad filled with such talent and experience are unable to challenge for the Europa League places. However, the signing of Pablo Fornals may just be the start of something new for West Ham. This Spanish wonderkid could help end the cycle of West Ham’s underachievement. This is a player, a talent that can drive the club to where they desire to be.

Capable of playing in a number of positions across the midfield whether in no.8, no. 6 or even no.4. Fornals is at his most destructive in the final third of play roaming around in his accustomed no.10 position or even as a second striker. A player in a similar mould to Manuel Lanzini in that both players are built similarly – a small frame but blessed with a blend of technical and creative abilities to be able to conjure up chances when under intense pressure or when attempting to evade tight spaces in the final phases of play.

In his first season at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Fornals was amongst high company in the creative department registering an astonishing 12 assists in the 2017/18 La Liga campaign, numbers that were matched and bettered by Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi. An impressive feat for a player who was beginning to find his feat.

What’s also impressive in Fornal’s game is his knack of executing the outstanding, if you need any evidence, check out this astonishing piece of skill against Athletico Bilbao last season:

Such an incredibly gifted player. Clips such as those can only increase the excitement amongst the West Ham camp. Pure moments of brilliance, moments that are to lift bums of seats and that’s the calibre of showings that West Ham have been crying out for since Dimitri Payet graced their presence only a few seasons ago. Pablo Fornals can be that man.

As pointed out above by Spanish football expert and ESPN editor David Cartlidge, Fornals would instantly complement West Ham’s midfield options especially in the creative department with Pellegrini not entirely certain on the commitment and fitness of Manuel Lanzini though the addition of Fornals may become a kick up the backside for the Argentinian and urge to step it up and stake a claim in Pellegrini’s first XI. An attacking trio of Fornals, Lanzini and Andersen is sure to whet the appetites of the Westh Ham faithful. A clear signal of intent from Pellegrini.

However, Cartlidge has identified a weakness in the Spanish playmaker’s game, something that will be alerted to Pellegrini providing the signing is completed:

A problem commonly brought to the surface when a up and coming talent switches from La Liga to the Premier League. Certainly, the physical aspect and the intensity is vastly increased in England. However, much will be made of how Pellegrini can complement the abilities of Fornals in his line-up. With capable and defensive options such as Mark Noble and Declan Rice behind him, Fornals has more than enough cover to fully exert himself wholly in the attacking department. Though, he is more than capable to help out in the defensive departments when needed. Furthermore, a trio of Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals leaves room for plenty of fluidity, creativity and a knack of picking up pockets of space in between the lines that will leave defenders in a state of whirlwind. Frightening.

The signing of Fornals represents such a huge shift in strategy for West Ham and manager Manuel Pellegrini and does also mark the kind of progress that the Chilean is progressively building at the London Stadium. The questions now remain for Pellegrini on how he can build a side capable of challenging for those positions just out the Champions League places. Can he keep his main stars? Arnautovic? Felipe Andersen? Declan Rice? These are three of their top stars in the camp that will surely want certain promises to be fulfilled in order for their services to be retained. And if West Ham are to properly challenge the top 6 they do need a striker capable of scoring 15 -20 goals a season, not 10. Regardless of whether Arnautovic stays or not, Pellegrini will have to get the balance right in terms of his front-men. For so long, West Ham have tried and tested combinations without truly finding a capable goalscorer to complete the package.

Nonetheless, the addition of Fornals is a massive representation of the positive shift in ambition and intent within the West Ham hierarchy. A player that is sure to light up the Premier League next season. Watch this space.

Christian Eriksen has all but confirmed his desire to seek pastures new elsewhere from Tottenham Hotspur, and has admitted that he wants to take on a new challenge at another club this summer – the worst kept secret within the Tottenham camp. However, what club will decide to break the bank to secure his services this summer remains to be seen.

The Danish Midfielder has graced the pitches of North London since his move from Ajax in 2013, becoming yet another outstanding product from its glorious academy. Though, he has one more year remaining on his contract, he now feels his time in London has run its course and has shown no indication to renew another cycle in North London. What Tottenham will be wary of though, is that any resistance to bids for the Danish playmaker will really not help their cause financially. First of all, Mauricio Pochettino will not want an unhappy player in his camp and most of all Tottenham will the run the risk of potentially allow him to run down his contract and leave on a free after next season especially seeing as Eriksen is reaching the prime of his career, his stock in the market will be reasonably high simply because of his creative and influential abilities from attacking midfield.

To put it simply, cashing in on Eriksen will not allow funds for a potential replacement – Giovanni Lo Celso from Real Betis has been earmarked as a perfect replacement for the Danish international – but it will also allow the club to make the substantial repayments on their new stadium. Daniel Levy, the chairman, has quoted £130m for the player which is an incredibly large sum which begs the question: which club will be willing to pay that huge amount even for a player as decorated as Christian Eriksen. However, the large sum quoted does represent the lengths Levy would be willing to reach in order to get the club back to a level playing field again in financial terms.

In footballing terms though, Christian Eriksen would represent a huge loss for Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino as rightly mentioned below by Football Correspondent for the Evening Standard Dan Kilpatrick:

To re-iterate, Eriksen will be a massive miss. Becoming an integral figure in Tottenham’s resurgence up the Premier League table over the past few seasons. A product of Ajax’s youth academy – like many of his fellow Spurs teammates – much was said and expected of the talents of Eriksen as he has become the hallmark of much of Tottenham’s success over the last 5 years. Eriksen’s consistency both in terms of his creative output – no player has created more chances in the Premier League since his debut in 2013 – and his impressive fitness – he has remarkably missed only nine league games over the past five seasons – would appeal to many of the top clubs scouring for his services this summer. These stats is a true reflection of the level of importance he has been to Argentinian coach Mauricio Pochettino, arguably becoming just as vital – if not more – than even Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dele Alli.

“I feel that I am at a stage in my career where I would like to try something new.”

Eriksen told the Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. 

“I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening at Tottenham and it would not be something negative to stay. But I have also said I would like to try something new.”

It is very clear, Christian Eriksen’s ambitions and thoughts lay elsewhere and the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool may have been the final straw for him North London. Whatever feelings Tottenham fans may harbour for him – whether positive or negative – they cannot fault or criticise his commitment, attitude and dedication to the club. Certainly, the Danish is a player of incredible abilities, such abilities that players in the same class will contending for and winning titles on a consistent basis and its unfortunate that last weeks final against Liverpool was the Dane’s first major competitive final for the club. You can almost guess what Eriksen is thinking, he needs to win trophies especially at this point in his career and he feels he won’t be able to fulfil those ambitions in North London despite Tottenham gradually building a revolution under Pochettino.

The big question for Eriksen is, where does he see himself come August? He hasn’t ruled out the possibility of staying at Tottenham for another year. However, there are no indications that he will put pen to paper on a new contract which means Tottenham will lose him for free after next season. Such has been the high standard of Eriksen’s performances over the past few seasons that Real Madrid and Barcelona have been mooted as possible destinations for the Dane. A move to the Camp Nou was talked about when Philippe Coutinho’s departure from Liverpool stalled, while a move to Real Madrid has been a rumour circulating heavily over the past few months.

For any footballer, joining either Real Madrid or Barcelona is seen as a dream. Chances are that if a player is excelling at any of the top six clubs in England, they will then definitely be on the radars of both the La Liga giants. Just ask Philippe Coutinho or Eden Hazard who has completed his £88million pound dream move to the Santiago Bernabeu. Bar a rather inconsistent form towards the end of the season – probably as a result of the constant transfer speculation – Eriksen’s displays over the course of these last couple years at the club will almost certainly be on the radars of both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Though, Eriksen has mentioned that Real Madrid could be an option as he searches for a new home, naming the 13-time European champions as a step up from Tottenham. Zinedine Zidane is expected to oversee a major surgery at the Santiago Bernabeu this season after such a disappointing season both domestically and in Europe. The process to get Real Madrid back on top in La Liga has already begun with the signings of Eder Militao from Portuguese big boys FC Porto and Luka Jovic from German underdogs Eintracht Frankfurt and as stated before are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard.

Christian Eriksen could represent a great addition providing Zidane fails to get his hands on Manchester United’s Paul Pogba. Creativity is certainly not amiss at the Bernabeu with Isco, James Rodriguez, Modric and Marco Asensio all still at the club and have been linked with moves elsewhere. Maybe a swap deal for either of these players could be a tantalising prospect for both Daniel Levy and Pochettino. It would be like Christian Eriksen never left with any of those players capable of performing at the same levels as Eriksen under Pochettino if not better.

However, there are some inconsistencies to Eriksen’s game and it is said that if the Danish playmakers struggles to implement himself quickly to the Madrid pressure, fans could turn on him without even considering given him time. After their failures last season, Zidane is under pressure from the Madrid faithful to bring in players who are ready to take up the Real Madrid mantle quickly and assertively, to drag the club back to the success of two seasons ago. Does Eriksen have the bottle and consistency to adhere himself to such demanding fans? Also, Paul Pogba is believed to be Zidane’s primary target with Juventus also in the frame.

What about Barcelona? The Spanish champions have added Ajax’s young Dutch midfield maestro Frenkie De Jong to their ranks and the Catalan giants are also reportedly carrying out their own major summer overhaul with a whole host of players said to leave the Camp Nou. The addition of Christian Eriksen could just be another ingredient in their plans to revert back to their ‘tiki-taka’ traditions. Possession based, dominant in midfield and also relentless pressing once possession is lost. These are characteristics that have been significantly abandoned in in previous seasons. With a potential trident midfield of De Jong, Arthur/Busquets and Eriksen, it provides control, composure and technical acumen like the famous midfield trio of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets. No longer will the team require Messi to drop deep in midfield and dictate at the expense of his own abilities in the final third. Rather than Messi come to pick up the ball from midfield, he would instead use the passing and creative abilities of De Jong, Arthur and Eriksen to find him with a defence splitting pass. It would make for an interesting move if Valverde broke the bank for the Dane.

Not only has Eriksen been linked with the two La Liga giants but also Inter Milan and Manchester United. With former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte now at the helm in the San Siro, he will be backed financially by the board in order to make Inter Milan a success in Serie A once again. With Juventus, Napoli, Roma and AC Milan all expected to be strengthening their respective squads this summer. What better way to make a statement than adding Eriksen who would instantly become an upgrade on what they already have. However, whether Inter would be willing to part with a huge sum of nearly £150m is highly doubtful. Manchester United will be willing to pay that amount, though that all depends on Paul Pogba leaving Old Trafford which will allow them to cough up the funds to quickly replace him with the Tottenham maestro. It does make sense, replacing Pogba with a player with such an abundance of creativity and end product.

If Real Madrid were to sign Paul Pogba, then no longer will Zidane require the services of Christian Eriksen. The Dane may stay at Tottenham or interestingly head to Old Trafford. What about if Pogba were to head to Turin? The maybe a move to Real Madrid might just be the best bet for both parties. It’s almost like Paul Pogba’s future is a ripple effect for Eriksen’s. Still, it is highly doubtful that Christian Eriksen will be willing to sacrifice Champions League football for Europa, where United will playing their football next season, and will Daniel Levy be willing to sell a prized asset to United yet again? It is unlikely.

Nonetheless, no matter where Eriksen ends up this summer, he is sure to be a real asset as he shown on many occasions in a Tottenham shirt. Creativity, imagination, determination, courage and most of all dedication.

Eriksen, on many occasions this season sacrificed his own productivity in the final third for the good of the whole team. Rather than staying in and around the half-spaces, becoming the focal point in attacks, he has regularly been asked to drop deep and help start attacks rather than finishing them. That’s what makes Eriksen so good is that he can execute both roles to perfection as reflected in his stats. Whoever, captures the signature of the Danish playmaker will be getting a player capable of performing at his best levels regardless of where he is asked to play.

Whether that lucky club will be Real Madrid, Manchester United or even Inter Milan remains to be seen.

Ajax capped a memorable and remarkable season with their first league title since 2014 as a 4-1 win over De Graafschap secured a domestic double. Erik Ten Hag’s side – who came close to an unprecedented Champions League final bar a last minute strike from Lucas Moura in their defeat to Tottenham – needed only a point from their last game to claim their 34th Eredivisie league title and they duly delivered as they tore apart De Graafschap.

Not only has their impressive performances been a revelation in Holland but also in the UEFA Champions League. Erik Ten Hag’s side caused havoc beating two of Europe’s giants in Real Madrid and Juventus and almost toppling Tottenham in the semi-final but for a last minute goal to end their Champions League hopes.

A breath of fresh air Ajax were on their journey to the semi-finals playing some scintilating stuff and exerting a brand of football that many clubs would kill to exhibit. Credit will have to go to Erik Ten Hag for the way he has transformed the aura around the club after years of going without the league title and even the domestic cup. Though, much of the credit will go to the players at his disposal, has executing his high-intensity and exciting philosophy to perfection. Players such as Frenkie De Jong – on his way to Barcelona this summer. Matthijs de Ligt – another player who will most definitely be leaving the Amsterdam in the coming months – has captured much of the imagination around Amsterdam with his impressive physical stature, maturity and immense leadership qualities at such a tender age of 19. Already being touted as one of the best centre backs of his generation.

Players such as Dusan Tadic, Hakim Ziyech, Daley Blind, David Neres have all garnered much of the praise this season but one man who has gone under the radar for much of the season especially during their fairy tale run in the Champions League, a player who has been compared to the Dutch legend Dennis Bergkamp by Bergkamp himself.

That man is Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek may have just burst onto the scene with his combative and tenacious showings in the Champions League over the past couple months, but over a decade ago he was awarded with a seal approval from a Dutch great in former Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp, who was working as a Ajax Under 12’s coach where he spotted the talents of Van de Beek taking a shine to his abilities.

Under Frank de Boer, Bergkamp – who was made his assistant at the time – immediately brought him to the attentions of Van de Beek. It may have been Bergkamp that spotted his talents when others did not but if his mother had her way, Van de Beek would not be on his way to stardom right now. Growing up in Nijkerk, an area in Holland which is known for its farmers. A young Van de Beek was more known for climbing up wooden fences and beams than he was playing football in his early years. Gerdina, his mother, shared that lack of enthusiasm for the sport.

Where one side of Van de Beek’s family hated the game, it was another that found him his once in a lifetime opportunity. His dad, Andre, took him to local side Veenseche Boys. It was said, after his first training session with them that Donny Van de Beek experienced his new found love for the game. He was so talented that by the time he turned 10, clubs such as Utrecht, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven were all touting his services. However, his family were Ajax season ticket holders so the only club they would have considered were the Amsterdam giants.

Despite his talents at such a tender age, there were some refinement needed in his game and with the help of Bergkamp, Van de Beek blossomed. It was the Dutch legend who told his Youth coach Ruben Jongkind that he needed some intense physical training.

Jongkind explained:

“We put him under a system of pretty rigorous physical training. He needed that. He came from the farmers. That area of Holland is pretty strong farmers there. But he needed to transfer that to field. He was benefiting from the performance department a lot. We got in people from American football and Judo.” 

Eventually, Donny Van de Beek caught the eye of an even greater figure than Dennis Bergkamp – Johan Cruyff. A meeting was held between Van de Beek’s dad and the Barcelona legend.

‘I fell completely silent.’ Johan said: “I know your son, yes. That is Donny Van de Beek. He is good at this and good at that.” He was able to tell everything. Do you know how strange it is that your idol knows everything about your son? He was able to tell everything down to the smallest detail.’ 

Van de Beek went on to become one of the stars in a very strong and technically sound youth team. As an Under-16 plying his trade in the Under-19s, it was impossible to hold back Van de Beek forever, he would then go on to make his first team debut against Celtic in the Europa League in 2015. Ajax came out victorious in that game 2-1 and Van de Beek never looked back. Frank De Boer used him sparingly that season but it was under Peter Bosz that Van de Beek found his calling, his purpose and most importantly his place in a very talented and technically astute Ajax team.

Even featuring in the Europa League final defeat against Manchester United that season as a late substitute, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona keeping close tabs on him. Last summer, he turned the chance to move to Roma as he believed Ajax was the best place for his development. That decision has proved vital as this year the Dutch playmaker has really come about with this season being his most productive one yet – scoring 17 goals in all competitions – becoming a vital cog in a team that has been well oiled, shaped and moulded by coach Erik Ten Hag.

So what exactly does Donny Van de Beek bring to the Ajax table?

A well-rounded midfielder capable of playing in a number of positions within the middle. Whether its no.8, no.10, or even a no. 6 just know you’re going to get a performance that is worthy of being placed in the 100% calibre. You’re almost guaranteed a complete performance from Van de Beek, one of the reasons why Erik Ten Hag struggles to keep him out of the first XI.

In fact, his heroics in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals – netting against Juventus in the last eight and against Tottenham as Ajax came out victorious in the first-leg – has yet again placed him high in the agenda of several of the continents top clubs, including Barcelona, Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund. However, Ajax are adamant that they will be able to hold onto his services for the new season and hopeful of the midfielder signing a new contract. Just like his Dutch counterparts, Frenkie De Jong and Matthijs De Ligt, Van de Beek has also – as well at club level – become a vital component in Ronald Koeman’s new and improved young Dutch team.

Despite his versatility in midfield, Van de Beek has regularly been deployed as Ajax’s main source of drive and creativity as a no.10 in behind Dusan Tadic. The Dutch maestro has become a master of the ‘third man’ run, arriving late in the box from midfield – latching onto crosses, through balls and loose balls – to exploit his predatory instincts in front of goal, becoming the prime beneficiary of Dusan Tadic’s switch to an unfamiliar role as a false-nine. His goal against Tottenham, a prime example of the kind of runs and positions he takes up in and around the penalty box. For a player so young, Van de Beek already has the tactical nous and positioning that players well matured than him would only dream of, and those traits owe much to the training and influence he has gone through throughout his time at Ajax.

What has been so exciting about Ajax’s football this season is the high energy in their pressing and movement without the ball. It’s bordering on relentless. As soon as they lose possession – within a second – they hustle their opponents aggressively to try and retrieve the ball. The one player kick-starting that process is Van de Beek, as soon as he moves off to press, the whole team follow. The type of football that made the Netherlands so good in the 1970s with the adaptation of Total football. The Johan Cruyff philosophy that has become the hallmark of what Ajax are traditionally all about. Much of the press comes through Van de Beek, his not stop running and tremendous energy is partly the reason Ajax are so dominant when attacking.

The team may well be disbanded this summer with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Matthijs De Ligt,  Nicholas Tagliafico, and David Neres all rumoured to leave by the time the new season starts in August. However, this is a club that will reboot successfully with many players ready to step up and take the mantle that has been vacated. It is said that Donny Van de Beek would be staying at the Amsterdam Arena, if that’s the case then Ajax will be not be worried at all about becoming feeder club this summer.

The future is still bright for Ajax, even more so if Donny Van de Beek renews his contract.

Manchester City became the first Premier League side in a decade to retain the Premier League title after the clinching the trophy in their emphatic and stylish victory over Brighton at the AMEX Stadium on Sunday.

In what has been one of the most memorable, enthralling and captivating title race since the moment Sergio Aguero secured City their first league title against QPR at the Etihad in 2012. Liverpool challenged and pressured Manchester City to the very end even finishing the season on a remarkable 97 points and losing only once without claiming the title. Extraordinary. Whether that says a lot about Jurgen Klopp’s brilliant Liverpool side or about Pep Guardiola ever-so dominant and wonderfully gifted City team, you can’t argue the fact that both teams are a class above the rest.

The table doesn’t lie.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool have set the standard this season, and it may take a while for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United to catch up. The latter may be even longer. City have had to spend big to retain their title but that doesn’t take away the brilliance and elegance of Guardiola’s current crop of players. They may even be the best we’ve ever seen in the Premier League. Debatable but last season’s points tally of 100 odd points tells its own story. Pep Guardiola is the difference maker.

There is nothing unusual about retaining your League crown. Paris Saint-Germain have succeeded this season, as has Lionel Messi’s Barcelona. Bayern Munich hope to make it a jaw-dropping seventh Bundesliga in a row this weekend and Juventus with the aid of one Cristiano Ronaldo have captured an unprecedented eighth consecutive Serie A title. However, the Premier League winners have been spread out evenly since Manchester United retained theirs in 2009. Leicester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have shared the spoils over the last decade and none had been able to retain their gongs. A couple months ago, it seemed as though Liverpool were ready to carry on that trend but for the resilience and pedigree of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City. It just had to be them and rightly so.

In what has been another Premier League season of thrills, spills, twists and turns. This seasons title race has arguably been the most entertaining yet. It took perfection to retain their title – a run of 14 consecutive victories – and somehow City done it. That’s what Pep Guardiola demands; Perfection.

That run speaks volumes. The mentality of this City is simply damning. The will to carry on winning, playing with freedom, confidence and expressing themselves to become the very best is what has set them above the rest. Those characteristics were regularly questioned during the tenures of Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini after failing to mount serious title defences. But Guardiola’s City never let up.

Instead, Guardiola’s City just keep on going. Much of that is down to the Spanish coach. Certainly, they may not have built on last seasons remarkable 100 points tally but really nobody was expecting them too. Especially as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool ran them so close. However, they still managed to equal the same amount of wins accumulated last season.

Is there any more records that Pep Guardiola’s City side cannot break? Much has been said of Pep Guardiola’s reputation of being called a ‘cheque-book manager’ due to the amount of money spent on the blue shores of Manchester. Certainly, City have spent bucket loads but you could point to the fact that their neighbours – Manchester United – have also spent a lot of money. Liverpool have. Chelsea have. However, none of these teams are Premier League champions. Manchester City are, and that is down to the work happening behind the scenes at the club. Guardiola has spent wisely.

The players Guardiola have purchased have come in and vastly improved what he already had. Ederson, for example – after spending money on finding the ideal keeper – has become the bedrock of City’s success this season with his outstanding displays in between the sticks. The Brazilian goalkeeper has come in and quickly built a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, if not the best. Centre-back Aymeric Laporte has been a revelation this season, even contributing a fair bit in front of goal this season too along with his knack of executing sublime passes from defence into attack, the hallmark of what Guardiola has built in this impressive City squad. Passing their opponents into submission, quick interchanges and transitions allowing them to be dominant for the whole of the 90 minutes. Riyad Mahrez who cost £65m, a club record fee, now has another Premier League winners medal to his collection, bought last summer from Leicester City to become another option on the wings. The Algerian magician may not have played as much this season but he has made a telling contribution to much of City’s success. How much of this City squad is now worth more than that? Raheem Sterling is no far beyond that category, so is Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane. These are players who will certainly improve again next season. Even Gabriel Jesus, despite his lack of game time, has only just turned 22.

Every department of City’s squad is filled with quality and brilliance adding to the spine that has been present from the get go. Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero three players that Guardiola has wholly embraced and built his squad around.

 

Manchester City’ squad is so impressively constructed that you can’t put it down to individual brilliance – the reason for City’s success – but its down to the meticulousness of Guardiola. Whereas Liverpool, Chelsea or even Tottenham you could argue much of their play hinges on their reliance on particular players. With City, they are built differently; its triumphs are not attributed not to someone on the field but largely down to the man in the hot-seat. The man who put them there. No matter how much City excel, no matter how much they achieve, it will always be overshadowed by Guardiola. You cannot disagree with it. This team is built in his image.

Every player in that dressing room has improved massively without a shadow of a doubt. What can we attribute that to? The sheer genius and coaching of Guardiola. Take Raheem Sterling for example, here is a player who shirked from the responsibilities of scoring regularly for club and country. Much was made of Sterling’s lack of intelligence in his positioning and ability to put the ball in the back of the net. Guardiola has taken those frailties and transformed them and now we have one of the most complete wingers in world football. Take a look at his stats. 17 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season is a remarkable return for a player who has very much matured under Guardiola over the past few years.

What about Oleksandr Zinchenko? An attacking midfielder turned left-back in the absence of Benjamin Mendy. The Ukrainian international has now finished the season with his astonishing record of winning in every game he has featured for the club. He has performed in a foreign role with such excellence and you cannot the argue the fact that his understanding and knowledge of the role has been enhanced by the coaching of Pep Guardiola. One of the best ever to grace the game of football. Look at Bernardo Silva too, you would have never thought the Portuguese maestro could become not only a wonderfully gifted attacking midfielder but also a hard-working and dogged right winger. His pressing and running at times is relentless. Add to that is beautifully timed runs and movement in between the lines and his incredible knack of consummately weaving his way around defenders with such ease.

Its just endless examples of the kind of work that is being planned and executed on the training pitch. It is not enough to say that Manchester City is built in Guardiola’s image but this is a club that was always built for the image of Guardiola. When his friends and former colleagues from Barcelona, Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain touched down at the Etihad nearly a decade ago, you could almost guess that Guardiola would follow suit. When he turned down their advances back in 2012, they appointed Manuel Pellegrini instead but chief executive, Soriano and Director of football, Begiristain were always laying down the groundwork for his future arrival, signing the kind of player that would quickly thrive under Guardiola when he would eventually arrive. The signing of Kevin De Bruyne for example was certainly one that was made with Guardiola in mind. There is even talk that Guardiola recommended the signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool long before he was even at the helm, the way Guardiola has got him playing right now, you’d be silly to not believe that rumour.

There have been problems to solve. Benjamin Mendy’s prolonged absence required imaginative solutions that altered the dynamic. The injuries to De Bruyne and Fernandinho necessitated some manoeuvring too. These are players that were certain starters, guaranteed a place in the first 11 at the start of the season but their absence didn’t stop City becoming so dominant, didn’t stop the machine functioning effectively. Against Brighton and on numerous occasions this season has Guardiola gone for the midfield triumvirate of Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Bernardo Silva. A set-up that is so hell-bent on making City the dominant and fluent force they so regularly are while also keeping the balance defensively.

If anything, though, merely weighing Guardiola’s worth in gold and silverware is mistaken. It is the style that he offers too that makes him so valuable to his contemporaries. It’s what made City not just wait for him, but to build a team capable of performing to his liking and taste. It is the fact that his teams – whether in Spain, England or Germany – always set the bar for other teams to follow. Its astonishing that City have only dropped 30 points over two Premier League seasons. Astonishing. Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp now know they will need a near-perfect season next year if they are to trump Guardiola and claim the Premier League crown from him. Just as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have redefined what it takes to be a truly great player – scoring dozens of goals and breaking so many records than had previously been thought feasible – so Guardiola has had a seismic impact of what it takes to become a truly great manager. Just as Sir Alex Ferguson set the bar. Pep Guardiola is setting the bar in his own unique way.

Even by his exalted standards, perhaps, nothing better illustrates the root of Guardiola’s brilliance better than the conclusion to this seasons title race. You certainly would have thought that City would cruise through to yet another league title but that wasn’t the case. We saw another side to City. One that stumbled over the finish line in certain matches when needed. Take the Tottenham game at the Etihad after the antics in the Champions League. City knew that another impressive showing – despite their loss on aggregate that night – would take them a giant step closer, but it wasn’t easy as first thought as Tottenham tore them to shreds at times during the game but City rode their luck. They were dogged when they needed to be. Patient and resilient in a match where the really wasn’t at their fluent best. Also against Burnley and Leicester City, Guardiola needed his players rise through the adversity and that they did. A moment of sheer quality from Vincent Kompany which proved the difference against Leicester and only the smallest margins got them over the line against Burnley. Literally and figuratively. Since losing to Newcastle in January. City have not dropped a single point. They did not flinch one moment.

A testament to the character, the quality and the will to win when faced with such adversity that you’d have to argue that City were worthy winners. The structure at City has never been at its finest as it is now. There is quality in every department. There is a youth academy that is progressively delivering with Phil Foden a shining example of what City are trying to build at the Etihad. There is so much that is right about the club that makes Guardiola’s working environment the the envy of other high profile clubs and managers around the world.

How his critics revelled in his struggles during that fraught first season at City, when success like this looked anything but inevitable. Back then, Guardiola’s apparent refusal to compromise his principles was seen as a sign of stubbornness. His unwillingness to accept that the peculiar foibles of the Premier League set it apart was evidence of a weakness.

Instead, he rested on his laurels down on his methods and bent the English game to his whim, bringing his own style to bear on the competition. The man who infamously declared that he was “not a coach for the tackles” after an ignominious defeat to Leicester in 2016 – went and won the title again having made the fewest tackles of any team in the competition.

We’re all thinking what is next Manchester City, how can Guardiola build and improve on these two remarkable Premier League where they have continuously set the standard in terms of points totals. Guardiola will surely take heart that he did win League title three times in a row both in Spain with Barcelona and with Bayern Munich. He will be hoping his City side will still hold the will and passion to win and not to rest on their current success but to strive for more. Ever since that first trophy for Barcelona, Guardiola has remained the man to beat. His tactics have evolved massively and sufficiently for him to stay ahead of the current curve and relentless drive, determination and meticulousness to not only better himself but his coaching staff and team ahead of him has not waned either. There are enough new ideas, philosophies and – with a few more additions – enough competition for places at City to maintain the steady improvement at the Etihad.

Guardiola is building a dynasty and the tables have turned in Manchester.
