Addressing Arsenal’s Areas of Need; Who Should Arteta Recruit?

Addressing Arsenal’s Areas of Need; Who Should Arteta Recruit?

Arsenal’s FA Cup final triumph proved a true reflection of how far Mikel Arteta has taken the club since his appointment.

However, the same common disappointments are still apparent in this Arsenal team, a soft-belly that so often leaves them vulnerable like the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in July.

Since Arteta’s arrival before Christmas, Arsenal have won 16 games out 28 in all competitions, highlighting a significant improvement in this team, also they have become more resolute at the back with the former Manchester City coach switching to a 3-4-3 to overcompensate for Arsenal’s frailties at the back.

Despite the vast improvements, the Spaniard knows he has a lot of work to do in order for him to lead the club back to challenging for a top four spot and major honours.

Their back-to-back wins over the Manchester City and Liverpool showed exactly how far Arteta has taken his team tactically, becoming more organised in defence, tactically flexible and more confident and assured in possession. Though, you feel there are still frailties in Arsenal’s team, especially at centre-back and in defensive midfield, areas where they lack the leadership, defensive prowess and stability in order for them to build from when attacking with force.

Arsenal still leave gaps when pressing, still open to the counter and are never comfortable when trying to hold on to tight leads. They don’t know how to win when not playing well, still have a soft belly where even the ‘smallest’ teams can exploit. It’s frail mentalities such as these that requires a huge shift if Arsenal are to challenge for major honours again.

Mikel Arteta has much work to do this summer to get Arsenal challenging again.

Arsenal need fresh personnel, but the question is, will Arteta be backed with the resources and money to build? What will be interesting is how Arsenal and Arteta approach this transfer window, considering the financial impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the club’s finances.

Do Arsenal need to sell stars such as Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette, Matteo Guendouzi and Shkodran Mustafi in order to recruit players? It certainly seems so, and sources have indicated to Bleacher Report, that Arsenal have little in the bank to spend, and will have to consider cheap options, swap deals, loans and free transfers in order to overhaul their squad. They’re close to agreeing a three-year deal for Chelsea winger Willian who will add valuable experience and winning mentality.

It’s clear the pressing areas Arsenal need to strengthen, at centre-back, in defensive midfield and a potential replacement for Mesut Ozil in the attacking midfield areas to add some much needed creativity. And if Lacazette does end up seeking pastures new, then Arteta would need to be seeking a replacement up-front too.

So for each of those areas, who could Arteta recruit if Arsenal were indeed to raise some significant cash this summer?

Defence

It’s evidently clear that Arsenal need major surgery in defence, specifically at centre-back. With David Luiz signing a new 1-year contract this month, much to the dismay of many Arsenal supporters.

With Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding’s future’s unclear along with Sokratis, Arteta will need to start looking strengthen their long term. Highly-rated young centre-back William Saliba is shoe in for a starting berth next year, who could Arteta look to partner him long-term?

Nico Elvedi, Gladbach

One of the most assured, high calibre centre-backs in Germany. Nico Elvedi has reportedly been on Arsenal’s radar for all of a year now, and he is a player who warrants all the attention and praise coming his way.

The Switzerland international has established himself as a key component in Marco Rose’s exciting Borussia Mochengladbach who finished the Bundesliga in an unprecedented Champions League spot for next season, it will be their first participation in the prestigious competition since its introduction.

Nico Elvedi has formed a much solid base at the heart of their defence and has emerged as one of the most complete defenders in the country. Mikel Arteta desires of his centre-backs to be comfortable on the ball and in possession and Elvedi expresses such qualities in abundance, with Marco Rose harbouring the same philosophical ideas.

Elvedi averages around 55 passes per game in the Bundesliga, with a hugely impressive 92.2 pass completion percentage, he’s also completed 92.8% of his long-passes highlighting his impressive distribution from defence and the ease at which he aims to form attacks through his progressive passes between the lines of play. He’s also very dominant in his defensive duels. Per 90, he’s won 1.42 tackles per 90, 2.50 interceptions and is also very competent in the air, winning 3.20 of his aerial duels.

The perfect addition for Arteta’s system if a potential move was to arise.

James Tarkowski, Burnley

One of the few defenders in the Barclays Premier League who just loves to defend, how Arsenal have missed those type of centre-backs since someone like Tony Adams. James Tarkowski is your typical no-nonsense centre-back, one who takes no prisoners, establishing himself as one of the most underrated defenders in the whole division.

Burnley are known for their rigid, solid system and James Tarkowski has been at the heart of everything good about Burnley’s impressive defence this season keeping 15 clean sheets last season, joint second in the top-flight alongside Liverpool.

It’s probably time the Burnley defender tests himself at a bigger outfit and playing under Mikel Arteta could represent the perfect opportunity for the defender to make the step up and also force himself into the England recokining too. His solid showings this season warrants such recognition.

Gabriel, Lille

Arguably the most coveted young defender right now. Lille’s Brazillian defender Gabriel is reportedly hot on the trails of a whole host of European clubs this summer. Arsenal, Manchester United, Napoli and Everton are all reportedly scouring for the services of this remarkably gifted young centre-back.

In an era where, ball-playing centre-backs are the feature of most of the elite clubs in Europe. If you’ve watched Gabriel over the course of the 2019/20 Champions League campaign, you’d know why he’s so highly sought-after right now.

The graph above, provided by Football Slices proves his influence and terrific abilities both in the defensive phases of play and distribution from defence. The 22-year-old takes no prisoners when defending. Whether its stepping out of his defensive line to halt attacks, or sweep up any lingering opportunities for the opposition,

Gabriel is a consummate, brute and an assured centre-back. Traits Arsenal so desperately need. Not only is Gabriel so dominant in his defensive duels but he’s meticulously assured in possession, averaging 61 passes per game with 82% pass success rate.

The Brazillian regularly attempts to cut through opposition lines with his passing which is further highlighted by his 4.35 passes into the final third. When Gabriel is in possession, he’s always looking to play it forward, always looking for the risk and reward pass, and that’s a trait Mikel Arteta will hold dear.

He more importantly wins a lot of his defensive duels especially the 1v1 battles, he’s strong, quick, agile and a fantastic reader of what his opponent is trying to do. The way in which he stands up to his opponents means he’s always in control of the scenario, allowing him the opportunity to snuff it out.

A move to Emirates could represent the perfect step up for the young defender.

Defensive Midfield

Arsenal have needed a sturdy, dominant and powerful midfielder since French legend Patrick Vieira left the club in 2005. Mikel Arteta identifies the pressing need, hence his constant changes in system to make up for the lack of a powerful midfield capable of breaking up play, and screening in front of the back four.

Granit Xhaka has enjoyed a renaissance under Arteta, but is he really the long-term solution Arsenal need? Lucas Torreira’s future is unclear, despite his bright capabilities, and Dani Ceballos’ future also is up in the air, with Arteta hoping he can secure him permanently from Real Madrid.

So who could Arsenal look to?

Denis Zakaria, Gladbach

Denis Zakaria has long been touted as the midfielder Arsenal so desperately require in midfield. The Swiss international is a man mountain, a player so capable of breaking up play, sitting in front of the midfield and providing the much needed security in front of the back four.

Not only is he capable of screening the middle third in search of danger, his lean build, power, tremendous qualities on the ball and his dribbling means he’s also hugely effective in transitioning play with his marauding runs.

Whether its relieving pressure from his own team or driving them up the pitch to instigate attacking scenarios, Zakaria has established himself as the complete midfielder under Marco Rose at Borussia-Park.

2.82 tackles won per 90, 2.21 interceptions, 6.19 successful pressures, 1.85 successful dribbles, Denis Zakaria offers much both in the attacking and defensive phases of play and also he’s fantastic in possession too. Perfect for Arteta’s possession-heavy philosophy. Zakaria can break lines with his passing and is very capable of keeping things ticking over when needed.

GET HIM IN!

Marc Roca, Espanyol

Espanyol’s Marc Roca could provide the perfect tonic for Arteta’s Arsenal vision, not just because he’s Spanish and can pass the ball expertly but he could be a cheap option if needed, because of Espanyol’s relegation to the Spanish second division.

Nonetheless, Marc Roca is a remarkably gifted young midfielder. Despite his club’s struggles last season, Roca has always stood out in games largely down to his excellent passing, vision, and tactical understanding. A defensive midfielder truly capable of dictating play. A fine orchestrator when trying to progress play to the forwards, not only through his short passing but his long passing too.

Roca is in the same mould as Dani Ceballos, but also more importantly carries the same influence as the Barcelona great, Sergio Busquets. As well as being elegant in possession, he can also provide much cover for his defenders and is very good in his defensive duels also.

1.51 tackles won per 90, 0.89 interceptions and 5.81 successful pressures but its his progressive passing and distribution that is the hallmark of his game. He’s averaged 6.78 passes into the final third this season as well as a 81% pass success rate.

Manuel Locatelli, Sassuolo

Manuel Locatelli is fast becoming a true embodiment of the complete midfielder. One who is vitally efficient and influential in both the attacking and defensive phases of play. Elegant and metronomic in possession combined with such combativeness and assuredness in his defensive duels.

Locatelli has captured the imagination at Sassuolo, after being deemed not good enough to fight for a starting place at AC Milan, the Italian under-21 international has risen from the ashes at Sassuolo and has proven such a pivotal force in a team blessed with such exciting fluidity. Locatelli is the glue that holds it all together.

Arsenal would do really well to push for his services, the Italian is just what Arteta needs to mould this Arsenal team into his image. Locatelli is one of a few players in European football right now who holds such a unique infleunce both in attack and defence.

When he receives possession, he always seeks the forward pass, always looks to set and lead his more advanced teammates into dangerous areas with his progressive passes. The attacking unit is tailor made for Locatelli’s defence-splitting passes. While he’s so very adept at influencing the attacking scenarios, he is incredibly effective when screening and protecting in front of the defence, always aware of up-coming danger and holding the strength, power and quickness of movement to snuff it out.

Locatelli could represent the perfect addition for Arsenal, a huge upgrade of what Arteta already possesses in his midfield.

Ibrahim Sangare, Toulouse

A swashbuckling midfielder. Toulouse’s Ibrahim Sangare is reportedly attracting a of number of interest from Premier League clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, including Everton, Arsenal and Manchester United.

With Toulouse failing to avoid relegation from Ligue 1 after the season was deemed null and void, it is reported that the club are indeed willing to listen to offers for the talented midfielder. Despite the clubs struggles, Sangare has swiftly emerged into the spotlight with his assured and dominant performances in the middle of the park. If rumours are believed to be true, Sangare could become a force in the English top-flight.

Sangare is a man mountain, standing at 6’3, he is an imposing figure on his opponents. Holds a slim build, is lean and long legs which means he has no problems putting himself about across the midfield and defensive areas. He is strong and forceful in the challenges and is very adept in possession too. In Ligue 1 this season, he’s made 3.4 tackles per game and intercepted possession 1.6 times. His tall and lean frame means he is a difficult player to dribble past. He’s been dribbled past 1.6 times per game.

What’s also impressive about Sangare is his passing abilities. He is statistically one of the best passers from defensive midfield in Ligue 1. He also ranks at first place amongst under-23 midfield players for both progressive passes and (151) and passes into the final third (124).

Sangare is also a very efficient ball-carrier, capable of carrying the ball up the field to progress play and drive his team up the pitch to relieve pressure or to conjure up an attacking opportunity from deep. He’s completed 71% of his ball carries, well capable in recieving the pass from his centre-backs and quickly driving forward in search of a goal. Sangare is also impressively well-balanced and composed when dribbling in tight spaces, and also completing passes when under pressure too. The 22-year-old midfielder has completed 11.6 passes while under pressure, 1.2 dribbles and has also makes 1.1 key passes per game.

Arsenal desperately need a powerful and commanding defensive midfielder, and Sangare is already built for the rigours of the Premier League, so why can’t Arteta take a cheap punt at recruiting the midfielder?

Replacement for Mesut Ozil?

As well as requiring quality in the defensive midfield department, Arsenal are also lacking in the attacking midfield areas too, and seeing as Arteta no longer sees Mesut Ozil as his long-term solution, shunning him out of the side as of late, the former Manchester City assistant coach will need to replace him swiftly.

Emiliano Buendia, Norwich City

Norwich may have been relegated from the Premier League, but Daniel Farke’s side went down really exciting fans across the top-flight with their fluid and unique style of football. It may have been naive at times, but it sure drew fans to some of their bright young attacking talents, most specifically Emiliano Buendia.

The Argentine midfielder is a thrilling creative force, and would represent a fantastic addition for any top six side in the Premier League. 7 assists in his first taste of English football is something to be proud of, and he can take heart in the fact that he can cut it amongst the best despite his team’s weaknesses.

Not only is Buendia a stylish and unique midfielder but he is also a bulldog and terrier-like when trying to win possession back for his team, a trait Arteta could hold dear within his system. Per90, he averages 7.67 successful pressures, ranking 97th in the percentile rank. He also averages an impressive 2.3 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per game, highlighting his desire and enthusiasm when pressing from the front.

Buendia is an excellent reader of the game, but also a graceful creative aspect when threading the eye of the needle pass. He constantly picks out the right positions in between the opponent’s midfield and defence in order to connect with the forwards and dissect organised defences which some lovely through balls, which is further shown through his 2.3 key passes per game. His excellent on-the-ball qualities, technical acumen and quickness of feet means he’s incredibly competent in operating in the tight areas of the attacking third.

Emi Buendia could offer Mikel Arteta so much in terms of his high-work rate, his enthusiasm and pressing from the front. The Argentinian is not afraid to put his body on the line, or even hassle players who are twice his size. The midfielder has been a joy to watch this season, and he deserves another shot at the big time, for an elite team too.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Red-Bull Salzburg

The Hungarian Kevin De Bruyne. As huge a tag that may be, Dominik Szoboszlai harnesses the same qualities and creative influence as the the world class Belgian.

12 goals and 18 assists from midfield this season is simply spectacular. Numbers you’d associate with a striker or a wide-forward. What’s so impressive about Szoboszlai is that he could probably perform both those roles to devastating effect too.

He is a creative metronome. A silky and elegant footballer when the ball is at his feet.

If recent rumours are believed to be true, then Szoboszlai could swiftly be on his way to gracing the elite competitions so Arsenal would need to act fast if they are to secure his excellent services.

A tall, rangy midfielder with remarkable trickery and an eye for the defence splitting pass. What’s also impressive about Szoboszlai is his versatility. Coach Jesse Marsch has deployed a variety of systems this current campaign, whether its a 4-4-2, 3-4-1-2 or 3-1-4-2. The 19-year-old is well capable of fulfilling a variety of positions. At no.10, no.8 as a deep-lying no.6 or even as a winger. How many of Arsenal’s midfielders can boast about such tactical flexibility and versatility?

Szoboszlai is a player blessed in performing actions in breaking down any type of defences. His nimble footwork and trickery means defenders just don’t know what he’ll do next whether its dribble past his marker to form a decisive pass into his forwards. It’s that unpredictability in his game that sets him apart from his teammates. His actions around the final third are so effective, that his teammates too, are surprised by his passes or pieces of skill to disorganise defences.

The Hungarian stands at 6’1 which is remarkably tall for a creative player, but that is a strength for him rather than a weakness. He may not be physically strong like most midfielders, but he sure knows to use his body to protect the ball and shield off his markers. It’s that trait coupled with his trickery and skill on the ball allowing him the ease and comfort in which to dribble past his markers. 6 goals and 9 assists after the restart, Szoboszlai is a man in such fine form.

Houssem Aouar, Lyon

Arguably one of the most gifted attacking midfielders in Europe right now. Lyon’s French maestro Houssem Aouar has rapidly turned a lot of heads with his standout performances for Lyon last campaign. Despite the clubs struggles domestically, he still ended the campaign with 9 goals and 7 assists from midfield.

Houssem Aouar is a creative metronome. A silky, effortless and elegant playmaker who’s performances on a football pitch so often leave his faithful Lyon fans on the edge of their seats. When the 22-year-old is in possession of the ball, something special is about to happen. Whether its within the final third or Aouar breaking into the attacking areas, his imagination and creativity is a constant threat to even the tightest defences. He’s a hard player to stop when he’s in full flow.

Aouar could be the perfect Mikel Arteta player. He’s a reliable presence, a leader on the pitch and a player who is not afraid to speak his mind if things don’t go his way. That’s what Arsenal need, players who are not afraid to speak out, who lead by example, and more importantly they need creativity in the final third. Houssem Aouar solves the issue in abundance.

Meticulous and extraordinary in tight-areas, he’s always able to conjure up magic even when surrounded by a few defenders. He holds the ability to pick out his teammates through them or use his extreme low sense of gravity, balance and silky footwork to dribble past them.

With Mesut Ozil’s services no longer required at the Emirates, Aouar could represent just the perfect replacement for the German. Lyon will indeed demand a relatively high fee for Aouar though, so Mikel Arteta will need to get Ozil off the wage bill to secure Aouar’s talented services.

Striker

Alexandre Lacazette’s immediate future is indeed uncertain right now, and with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang reportedly close to signing a new contract at the Emirates so Arteta must still prepare for the worst-case scenario and plan accordingly to fill any potential empty spots.

Preferably, a striker who not only scores goals but holds the ability to be hugely flexible when playing across the front-line and can also link up play well with his teammates:

Odsonne Edouard, Celtic

One of the finest strikers in the whole of Britain, if not Europe. If you need any evidence, then check his 2019/20 goalscoring feats.

Odsonne Edouard is an elegant, multi-functional player. The Frenchman oozes confidence, and quality when he steps on the pitch. Up-front maybe his natural position, but his contributions and influence in attack run deeper than that.

As well as his 22 Scottish Premier League goals, he also registered 7 assists last season as well as a hat-trick in the first game of the SPL 2020/21 season against Hamilton Academical showcasing his creative spark and abilities in the final third. As well as a natural goalscorer, he can also act as the team’s main creative force from the front in order to create space and opportunities for his teammates. He loves to drop into the half-space to exchange passes before moving into spaces vacated by the defence. While its so effective and complimentary of Celtic’s attacking play, it is also bamboozling for opposing defenders, they are often left confused as to who to pick up.

His dribbling abilities emerge from his South American roots. He is rarely exuberant all the showboating type with it, but he exhibits an effective use of his control in tight spaces and a technique which few players in the Scottish division can match. It’s abilities such as this, and his fantastic movement, link-up play that makes him such a dangerous commodity within the final third. The Frenchman averages 0.9 goals per 90 minutes, and 0.38 assists per 90. It’s no wonder why he is the Scottish Premiership’s most creative force.

Odsonne Edouard would be absolutely perfect for Mikel Arteta. He can perform on left like Aubameyang and can link-up play like Alexandre Lacazette. The Frenchman has got the lot; speed, trickery, strength, power, ball control and potency in front of goal.

Everything a manager desires in his frontman.

Donyell Malen, PSV Eindhoven

A footballer who once graced the Emirates stadium could be on his way back, a much better and more complete forward if reports are believed to be true.

From an Arsenal reject to one of Europe’s most coveted young forwards. PSV Eindhoven’s number nine, Donyell Malen has enjoyed a steady and impressive upward curve to stardom during his time at the Dutch giants. The striker has become one of the standout players in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, with 11 goals and two assists from 14 appearances.

Like Edouard above, Donyell Malen isn’t your average Joe centre-forward. 11 goals in 14 Eredivisie appearances is certainly no joke. Malen is the perfect mixture between the classic striker and the contemporary. He’s a very direct, pacey and agile forward mixed with an excellent blend of nimble, electric footwork. He’s a real nightmare for centre-backs due to his almost terrier-like bravery in running at defenders and beating them for sheer pace.

Despite all that, Malen still embodies the characteristics of a quintessential ‘Dutch no.9’, where there is a need to be more than just a typical goalscorer but a well-versed playmaker also. His dribbling, direct play, pace and agility has been paramount in PSV’s success this season.

7 Potential Options For Everton to Consider in Strengthening Wide Areas.

7 Potential Options For Everton to Consider in Strengthening Wide Areas.

Everton Football Club have enjoyed a steady renaissance since Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment before Christmas. After years of failed recruitment and managerial appointments, the club have successfully managed to persuade of one of football’s most decorated coaches to revive their attempts to drive the club amongst the elite domestically and in Europe.

Ever since Ancelotti’s appointment, the club have racked up 30 points from a possible 63 (8 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats) in 21 games. A tally that represents considerable improvements after their dour and laboured showings under predecessor Marco Silva.

Considering Ancelotti’s managerial record and status, major adjustments and an injection in confidence and performance were always guaranteed. Everton have indeed looked a more organised, sturdy and potent force with the Italian switching to a customary 4-4-2 setup which has allowed Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin more responsibility and freedom up front, and also a significant shift in solidarity within the defence. Andre Gomes, Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson have certainly added bite and efficiency in the middle. However, Ancelotti’s wide options have flattered to decieve so far. Bernard, Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott are his only options, and in all fairness aren’t up to the required level to take Everton’s game up a notch.

There are much pressing concerns within the team, despite Carlo Ancelotti’s immediate impact. Their form heading towards the end of the Premier League campaign exposed their frailties, especially in their attacking play.

It’s clear Everton are in need of some creative reinforcements this summer, and Ancelotti is reportedly going to be backed in the transfer market despite the financial implications from the coronavirus.

So, who could Ancelotti turn to this summer and what could they offer the club going forward?

Here are some potential low cost, low-risk options for the Italian coach to consider:

Todd Cantwell, Norwich City

Despite Norwich’s demotion to the Premier League, a record fifth time, the club still have a lot to shout about, and that’s been the emergence of some of their remarkably gifted young talents in their squad.

Emi Buendia, Max Aarons, Jamal Lewis and Ben Godfrey have formed the spine of a promising and exuberant side, despite their struggles. Though, one player who will be high on few list of targets amongst Premier League top-flight clubs this summer is, Todd Cantwell.

Norwich have played some scintilating football at times this season, and Cantwell has been central to that. Pressing from the front, jinky feet, an array of technical qualities and a personality and character that will indeed take him very far.

Todd Cantwell is an exciting talent and the 22-year-old could potentially thrive under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti. 6 goals and 2 assists exemplifies a decent first season in the Premier League, and there is still much for him to achieve in the top-flight. A move to Everton could prove the perfect step up for him, while Ancelotti could benefit much from Cantwell’s enthusiasm, character and willingness to improve.

Because of Norwich’s relegation, the club would demand a relatively low fee, and providing Ancelotti is of course, backed with the funds to improve the squad, Todd Cantwell could well represent a low-risk but exciting addition for the next campaign. The 22-year-old certainly deserves another shot at the Premier League.

David Brooks, Bournemouth

Like Norwich, Bournemouth may well be heading down to the Championship after an impressive prolonged period gracing the Barclays Premier League. They too possess some players who are just too good to be playing Championship football, and one of them is Welsh international David Brooks.

The 23-year-old has only just returned from a long-term injury to feature prominently for Bournemouth since the restart, and already he showed why the club have missed him over the past 18 months. Brooks is an exciting young forward and incredible versatile too. The Welshman can perform roles on the left, the right and at no.10 due to his trickery, pace, technical acumen and bravery.

Bournemouth have flattered to deceive at times this season. Their poor defensive showings have often been bailed out by their exciting attacking play at the other hand, a regular trend that has been the hallmark of Eddie Howe’s side since they gained promotion in 2015. That hasn’t been the case this season, due to Brook’s injury and loss of form to key players.

Like Cantwell, Brooks is simply too good to be playing Championship football. Last season saw his remarkable breakthrough in the English top-flight, scoring 7 goals and 5 assists in 30 outings. These are numbers that prove Brooks has what it takes to make it at the top level and Ancelotti could do no wrong in recruiting the forward.

Everton currently lack a progressive ball carrier on the flanks, and Brooks would provide the perfect low-risk solution to their creative issues both on the flanks and in the middle, potentially killing two birds with one stone.

Said Benrahma, Brentford

Arguably the most decorated and exciting players currently playing in the Championship. It won’t be long before Saïd Benrahma is gracing the Barclays Premier League. His extraordinary talents are tailor-made for it.

Whether its for Brentford, who have just reached the Championship play-off final, the English top-flight is just what Benrahma needs to take his game to the next level.

The Algerian has been central to Brentford’s promotion push, contributing to 26 of their goals in the Championship (17 goals, 9 assists) in 38 starts. Remarkable numbers for a player who continues to intrigue and set games alight even when there aren’t any fans. Of Brentford’s 17 goals since the restart, Benrahma has had a hand in nine of them, scoring seven.

Chelsea are the only club rumoured to be courting the player, but Benrahma is a player Everton also should be scouring for also. How Ancelotti would love to possess a layer of Benrahma’s qualities right now. Lining up on the left of Brentford’s 4-3-3 shape, Benrahma is their sole creative force, blessed with such unerring tricks, dribbling qualities, vision, imagination and a confidence that few players in the division can match.

So far since the restart, Everton have lacked that sparkling flair in attack, someone who can capture the imagination when required. Benrahma provides just the tonic for that. As well as his outstanding goal outputs, he also averages 2.2 key passes per game and 2.9 dribbles highlighting his incredible infleunce in the final third. He’s not afraid to take players on, attempt the risky pass, or go for goal from outrageous positions as shown in the clip above.

Benrahma certainly has what it takes to cut it at the top level. His counterpart Riyad Mahrez is currently tearing it up at City, the Brentford star holds all the characteristics and abilities to match the heights of his fellow Algerian. Everton should seriously consider going putting all their eggs in the Benrahma basket. He may just be worth it all.

Calvin Stengs, AZ Alkmaar

Another player proving vital to his clubs cause. Before the Dutch Eredivisie campaign was curtailed because of the coronavirus pandemic, AZ Alkmaar were Ajax’s closest challengers sitting level on points with them before the cancellation.

Dutch winger Calvin Stengs proved one of the key components in an enthralling attacking team. The 21-year-old is a dribbling sensation, blessed with amazing trickery and dancing feet and an attacking influence that has come on leaps and bounds this season.

He’s scored 9 goals and assisted 9 in all competitions this season, highlighting his incredible importance to Arne Slot’s impressive AZ team. Stengs isn’t your traditional winger, he’s incredibly versatile, also holding the capabilities and understanding to also make a telling contribution at no.10. Stengs is a silky forward, his balance, excellent ball control and awareness means he can operate in tight areas within the final third, hence his versatility.

Stengs is another one of those talents who needs the magnifying glass that is the Premier League for his abilities to be truly appreciated and developed, and Ancelotti could provide him with that platform if a move was to materialise. Everton are in need of some injection, some serious shaking up in the creative department and they could do no wrong in going for the Dutch international.

Leon Bailey, Bayer Leverkusen

Jamaican and Bayer Leverkusen forward Leon Bailey divides opinion. He’s been in and out of the Leverkusen side this season, making 12 starts and 10 substitute appearances in the German Bundesliga, despite his extraordinary talents. It’s safe to say that Bailey needs a career restart and there may be no place to get that than at Goodison Park under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti.

Despite the difficulties this season, Bailey has still put in some good numbers, contributing to Leverkusen’s impressive season. 5 goals and 3 assists in 12 Bundesliga games. He’s successfully completed nearly 4 dribbles per 90, 3.39 shot creating actions per 90, showing that he still has so much to offer in the final third and when progressing play. Everton currently do not hold any adequate dribblers or progressive ball-players in their team and Bailey is another option who could solve those issues.

Bailey is a versatile winger, can line-up anywhere on the left, and has even featured at left-wing back because of his tactical versatility and understanding. His speed, dribbling abilities, technique, and quick would be an asset to any team in the Premier League. It’s important to remember that Leon Bailey is still only 22-years old, so he has a lot of time to really unlock his true potential.

It is reported that Bailey would be available for €20-30m this summer, with a whole host of Premier League rumoured to be interested in his services. If reports are believed to be true, it is an opportunity Everton simply cannot pass up on.

Cengiz Ünder, AS Roma

Another player in need of a career reboot. Roma’s Cengiz Under is reportedly attracting a lot of interest this summer, despite his difficulties to stake a claim for a regular place in the Roma side. The interest despite all that, says a lot about his abilities and Under is a player who is truly blessed with an array of attacking qualities.

Everton are rumoured to be interested in a number of players this summer, and their lack of options in attack means the rumours are understandable. Cengiz Under is amongst those players linked with a move to Goodison Park and if any manager can help him restore his mojo, then he can look no further than Carlo Ancelotti.

Under is just what Everton needs, a player who can line up on either flank, blessed with exciting technical qualities, quick feet, excellent ball control, vision and an ability to create opportunities for his teammates as well as finishing them off himself. The Turkish international also possesses a wand of a left-foot which could be of real use to excite the Evertonians once again.

Ebere Eze, Queens Park Rangers

One of the most decorated attacking talents in the Championship. Ebere Eze deserves a shot at the Premier League, and Everton could do well in taking a punt on the midfielder.

12 goals and 8 assists is a remarkable return in a division that demands so much week-in and week-out, and Eze has made it all look easy. The 22-year-old is ridiculously creative, and effortlessly silky. King of the nutmegs, his trickery, ball playing and technical qualities are unmatched, hence his impressive goal output.

Another player capable of playing anywhere across the attacking positions, his creativity in the final third, imagination, inventiveness and risk-taking characteristics allows him to be so influential when creating chances. 1.8 key passes and 2.9 dribbles per game this season is a huge reflection of his influence. Queens Park Rangers rely so heavily on Eze and he never disappoints, popping up in just about anywhere on the pitch to exert his creative authority and showboating qualities.

If Ancelotti aims to excite the Everton fans then recruiting Ebere Eze would prove a standout addition. Again, its about time Eze tests himself in the top-flight and maybe, just maybe Goodison Park could be the perfect step-up for him to continue his wonderful development. Eze is garnering a lot of interest right now, especially from West Ham, so Everton will have to move fast.

How Could Chelsea Line-Up with Timo Werner Next Season?

How Could Chelsea Line-Up with Timo Werner Next Season?

It’s official!

Chelsea have completed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, subject to completing a medical. The German international has agreed a five-year-deal at Stamford Bridge, becoming Chelsea’s second signing of the summer after swiftly moving for Hakim Ziyech from Ajax back in January.

Chelsea have agreed to part with €50m (£45m) triggering the release clause of Werner, who is set to earn more than €10m (£9m) per season in England.

Timo Werner has enjoyed a truly scintilating season in front of goal in the German Bundesliga with 26 goals and eight assists, quickly becoming one of Europe’s most feared forwards.

The signing of Werner will certainly provide Frank Lampard with a ruthless edge in attack something they’ve desperately needed throughout the season, and a flexibility that so few teams can match. With the German capable of playing anywhere across the front four, Lampard now – along with the added creative impetus of Hakim Ziyech, and a few more additions – possesses an attack truly capable of mounting a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Much of Chelsea’s issues this season, and the reason for their shortcomings in matching the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool is their lack of potency up-front. Despite this campaign being an impressive one for Tammy Abraham scoring 13 goals in the Premier League, the same cannot be said for the rest, with their next best scorer coming from midfield in Mason Mount who’s notched six Premier League goals.

It is a problem that will have lingered in Lampard’s thinking, with only Tammy Abraham reaching double figures for goals so far this campaign. The England international has also suffered a number of minor injuries, meaning Chelsea have lacked the necessary firepower to become a clinical force in front of goal. Michy Batshuyai and Giroud have provided cover but not bearing any fruit with only eight goals between them throughout the whole campaign.

How Timo Werner compares to Chelsea’s strikers

Timo Werner is a stark upgrade on Chelsea’s current options. One key aspect is that Werner rarely suffers injuries so he can offer Lampard a peace of mind on the injury front and a commitment and fitness required to play throughout the campaign, with a few rests here and there.

Werner has accumulated much more minutes than Abraham, Giroud and Batshuyai and more importantly offers so much more in the attacking and defensive sense. Within Lampard’s system, he requires his frontman to press from the front, play with energy and form a fluid understanding with fellow teammates.

While Abraham (5.62) and Batshuyai (4.11) have completed more successful pressures per 90 than Werner (3.76) as required, the German completes more dribbles, more passes into the box (1.42), more key passes (1.6), more touches in the opposition box (8.05) per 90 than his counterparts meaning he’ll offer Lampard so much more potency, threat and ruthlessness in the final third.

The German is a workhorse, defenders do not know how to stop him because the striker is constantly on the move, dropping deep in between the lines as well as running beyond the last defender. His pace and movement is the hallmark of his game, unsettling even the most tightest defences. A characteristic that Lampard will hold dear. Chelsea have been found wanting trying to break down deep defensive lines, its why they struggle to comfortably beat the teams in the bottom half.

The 24-year-old has outperformed his XG (Expected goals) of 21.4 in the German Bundesliga along with Tammy Abraham (12.2) who’s notched 13 goals. So Lampard now boasts a potential pairing that will of course score the goals needed to fire Chelsea to the next level. Blended with the imagination, creativity and inventiveness of Hakim Ziyech, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic behind them, there’s no reason why Chelsea can’t challenge the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City next season.

So how could Chelsea line-up with Timo Werner next season?

4-2-3-1

Timo Werner has indeed lined-up on the left for Julian Nagelsmann on a few occasions this season, and could offer Lampard that flexibility if needed. The German’s frightening pace, coupled with his positional understanding and willingness to cover defensively will certainly aid Chelsea’s fluid movement and pace in the wide areas.

What Werner also adds, is the ability to perform in the half-spaces, allowing space for the full-backs to push on – potentially Ben Chilwell if Chelsea manage to recruit him this summer – and create opportunities which could see Abraham improve on his goal return next season.

Chelsea have regularly struggled on the left-wing, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, when called upon, have failed to provide the spark needed to give Lampard’s side the perfect balance. The reported interest in Ben Chilwell makes a lot of sense, coupled with the rapidly emerging talent in Reece James on the right could give Frank Lampard a much more free-flowing, expansive and exciting outlook in their attacking play.

3-4-1-2

Throughout the season, Timo Werner has lined up next to a fellow target man in Patrik Schick and Youssef Poulsen who are both hard-working forwards, but can also hold up play allowing Werner to pick up loose balls around them and finish off attacks. The German works unbelievably well in a front-two and could just be the tonic for Lampard if he deploys a system which involves a front two. Providing Olivier Giroud stays at the Bridge next season, it could another quality option within the system.

The Chelsea legend has favoured a back-three system a few times this season and it won’t be a surprise to see him utilise the same approach in the coming future. It’s a formation that gives much fluidity and control in possession and organisation without the ball.

The addition of Werner and Ziyech allows Chelsea the flexibility to favour a counter-attacking approach or one that sees them take a more patient one when breaking down tight defences, especially those at the bottom.

4-3-3

Wherever Werner lines up for Lampard next season, there’s a confidence now and an added incisiveness in Chelsea’s attack with the addition of the German. Lampard will surely be licking his lips at the prospect of possessing one of Europe’s most highly coveted and deadliest forwards.

Werner’s remarkable return of 33 goals in all competitions this seasons tells its own story. Chelsea have now potentially solved their potency issue. Timo Werner is just the tonic Lampard needs to lead his beloved club to the next level.

Manchester City Must Accelerate Plans to Secure Gabriel Jesus’ Future

Manchester City Must Accelerate Plans to Secure Gabriel Jesus’ Future

Manchester City have a major decision to make this summer, as elite clubs such as Real Madrid and Juventus remain on the hunt for new forwards in the transfer window. That key decision concerns the future of exciting forward, Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian international is heavily linked with a move away to join Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus, and there is no doubting that Jesus could become a very attractive proposition at the Allianz Stadium. The Serie A champions are on the hunt for a long-term forward, with Lautaro Martinez and Harry Kane also reportedly on their radar.

Jesus’ agent recently stated the player won’t be leaving the Etihad any time soon, unless the club want to sell, but the longer the player remains as an understudy to Sergio Aguero, the quicker Jesus could be out the door.

images
How much longer will we continue to see this substitution?

How much longer will Gabriel Jesus be considered an understudy to Sergio Aguero? There’s no question, Sergio Aguero is amongst the Premier League’s most deadliest and gifted goalscorers but sadly, the Argentinian isn’t getting any younger.

After celebrating his 23rd birthday this week, Gabriel Jesus can also look back on another positive season at the Etihad, despite his position as second in command. The Brazilian is certainly making a case to become Manchester City’s main man. 16 goals in all competitions this season, 5 in 6 Champions League games and 10 goals in 24 Premier League outings shows that the Brazilian is just the striker City need now and most importantly in the future.

His career statistics since his move to the Etihad in January 2017 makes for some impressive reading:

🌃 Jesus’ City career by the numbers

  • 🏟 139 appearances
  • ⚽️ 63 goals
  • 🎯 25 assists
  • 🏆 2 Premier League titles
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 1 FA Cup title
  • 🥇 3 League Cup titles

His stats show his predatory instincts in front of goal as no Premier League striker, not even Aguero has converted more ‘big chances’ per 90 than his 0.66. Also the Brazilian is seventh for shots per.90 (3.46), second for efforts on target (1.93) and fifth for touches in the opposition box. (7.84) {Football Whispers}. It’s remarkable the Brazilian can’t secure a starting berth.

In terms of his expected goals data, the forward is out-performing his XG score of 0.71 and has a post-shot XG per 90 of around 0.8 which no one in the English top-flight can match, implying that Jesus continues to create much impact when he’s on the pitch. The Brazilian is your archetypal penalty box predator, always in the right place at the right time because of his fantastic awareness, positioning and silky movement in the penalty box. Maybe he’s learned enough from Sergio Aguero to now finally take his seat as Manchester City’s crowning regular up-front.

When Jesus joined Manchester City, he was an unknown quantity, but since then he’s shown why is indeed the future at the Etihad and indeed Brazil’s main no.9 for years to come. Ever since his change of scenery, only Sergio Aguero (0.88) and Harry Kane (0.83) can better his goals per-90 ratio.

images

Against Real Madrid, in City’s ever-so impressive away win at the Bernabeu in February, Gabriel Jesus performed at his sparkling best. Lining up in an unorthodox role in off the left-hand side, Jesus showed Guardiola just why he’s the man to take the club forward. As well as scoring City’s equaliser, the Brazillian was outstanding in his defensive responsiblities, completing two tackles and two interceptions, also holding a passing accuracy of 95.2% from 3 key passes. Jesus is simply cutting edge in both his attacking and defensive contributions.

He’s not just an out-an-out goalscorer but his understanding and ability to create space and create chances means he is well on his way to becoming a much more complete and decorated forward and he’s only just turned 23. Manchester City cannot afford to let him leave, especially to a European rival in Juventus.

Jesus has certainly come on leaps and bounds, not only in his performance, but attitude. Never complains about his role, just gets on with it, taking his chances whenever the opportunity arises, and doing so with a patience and self-belief that will only serve him well moving forward. You can’t argue with the fact that Jesus is certainly making the most of his playing time, however limited it may be.

As a result, it is remarkably imperative City strengthen their stance on the forward and appreciate him for the brilliant forward he is. What’s scary is, he’s only going to get better. They’ll very much regret the decision to allow him to leave. City will need a new saviour once Aguero calls time on his Etihad career. Guardiola must make sure the Manchester City future is a Jesus-filled one.

Federico Chiesa is the Perfect Jadon Sancho Alternative for Solskjaer

Federico Chiesa is the Perfect Jadon Sancho Alternative for Solskjaer

It’s no secret of Manchester United’s strong interest in Borussia Dortmund’s high-flying winger Jadon Sancho, with various reports stating that the England international won’t think twice about joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Old Trafford revolution. Also, Manchester United have been in constant contact with the forward’s agent, even as far as a couple months.

Jadon Sancho is indeed the perfect addition for Manchester United, one that can hype up and excite the crowd once again despite Daniel James’ successful first season at Old Trafford. Sancho’s trickery, pace, unpredictability in the final third is just what is needed to lift bums off seats at the Theatre of Dreams once more.

However, United must not place all their eggs in one basket. As much of a dream signing Sancho would potentially be, there is another flying talent out there also capable of bringing the Old Trafford faithful to its knees, a player well worth taking a look at:

Fiorentina’s Italian maestro Federico Chiesa.

ACF Fiorentina v Atalanta BC - Coppa Italia

The winger is currently attracting interest from Manchester United, Inter Milan and Juventus. It’s been reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already sent scouts to watch the exciting forward ahead of a potential summer move. Providing United somehow fail to secure the signature of Jadon Sancho this summer, Federico Chiesa is indeed the perfect alternative option.

The 22-year-old has earned rave reviews and a glowing reputation in Italy, registering 6 goals and 5 assists in Serie A this season. He may not hold the same spectacular numbers as United’s top summer target, but his impact for Fiorentina is just as massive, considering that Fiorentina are not title challengers like Borussia Dortmund. It’s instances such as these that makes Chiesa’s influence so telling. It won’t be long before the winger is writing his name in the lights on the grandest stage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pI00l56UQI

Federico Chiesa is the son of former Fiorentina and Italy forward Enrico Chiesa, but is more suited to playing in the wider positions, in particular on the right flank. United have missed that world class presence on the flanks this season.

Not since Nani, Antonio Valencia and Cristiano Ronaldo, have United possessed a a traditional winger truly capable of raising the roof at the Theatre of Dreams. Signings such as Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Alexis Sanchez have all attempted to solve United’s issues but not one of them proved any sort of success.

Daniel James has undergone a stellar first season at Old Trafford. Though, the Welshman’s progress and development – as a result of a shortage of numbers in the position – has been fast-tracked which has led to some inconsistencies in his game.

images

It’s unclear what position Marcus Rashford is ultimately best at but he’s thrived as a left-inside forward this season, scoring 18 goals. Anthony Martial, naturally is an inside-forward too but has been trusted with the no.9 position and its clear Solskjaer needs players who are experts in their specific roles.

Federico Chiesa, like Jadon Sancho could offer him that on the right-wing. The Italian is a typical winger. Well-versed in getting to the byline through a spectacular piece of trickery and skill before putting in telling crosses to the strikers. In fact, Chiesa is more than just your typical winger, he can perform expertly marauding from his designated position to perform roles in the half-spaces, cutting in from the left or right and working well with his fellow midfielders as well as executing a perfect shot from outside the box. He’s just as good on his left in comparison to his stronger right foot.

He’s also deployed as a split striker in Fiorentina’s 3-5-2 system. While its one that may prove rigid and less proactive, its a formation that still allows Chiesa such creative freedom. He’s required to be aggressive and direct when drifting wide to pick up possession and running the channels. The role fits him perfectly because of his non-stop running, and pressing.

The Italian maestro is also devastating on the counter-attack, whether starting one or finishing one. Chiesa’s dribbling, electrifying pace and the ease in which he can beat his opponent marks him out as the most dangerous young wingers in Europe. 50% of his goals (21) for Fiorentina have come directly from counter-attacking scenarios. What also allows him to thrive is his technique, he’s a very gifted individual which allows him to maintain the ball when dribbling and also execute shots when running at speed.

His goal against Atalanta at the start of February is a perfect example of his remarkable technique. Benassi’s cross from the right is headed clear, but then Chiesa quickly moves on to the loose ball, controls it and lets fly with a dipping half-volley into the bottom corner from all of about 25-yards. A picture-perfect goal.

images

His stats prove his devastating efficiency and influence in Fiorentina’s attacking moves.

His XG (expected goals) per90 minutes reads at 0.37, and XA (expected assists) per90 minutes reads at 0.12, he’s also registering impressive numbers when it comes to key passes per 90 minutes, registering on average 1.38 passes into the final third {Understat}.

Chiesa is also not afraid to have a go at goal too, registering on average over 3 shots per game, and attempting 1.5 dribbles meaning Fiorentina are always guaranteed goals when the forward is on-song.

Chiesa could fit in perfectly at United, as a traditional right-winger in Solskjaer’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation or in the split-striker role in the more rigid and compact 3-5-2 shape like he’s done so at Fiorentina. His relentless energy and determination is just the tonic Old Trafford needs.

How United could line up with Chiesa:

4-2-3-1

lineup (10)

3-5-2

lineup (11)

The Italian international is so unpredictable which makes him frightening to play against. However, he can be a bit rash for his own good at times, shooting when a pass to a team-mate in a dangerous position is more feasible or trying to beat one or too many defenders which means attacking opportunities are lost.

His intelligence and decision making in the final third though, are sure to increase at a rapid rate when he does eventually move to a bigger club in the near future. It’s staggering to note that the player has never graced the Champions League, its a goal that will be high on his agenda when choosing his next destination.

Whether its Manchester United, Inter Milan or Juventus, the winger is sure to be amongst the best forward players in Europe, if he isn’t already. Providing United fail in their bid to prize Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund, Federico Chiesa would certainly prove a much more thoughtful and cheaper alternative.

Scouting Report: Carlos Soler

Scouting Report: Carlos Soler

According to Sky Sources, Arsenal are keen on signing Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler.

Head coach Mikel Arteta is reportedly interested in the Spanish wonderkids services and is an admirer of the player. With the coronavirus pandemic bringing an uncertainty around football currently, there is also no guarantees that the transfer market will operate in the same way this summer. However, that hasn’t stopped clubs scouting and fielding out players for their squads next summer.

It’s been reported that Arteta will be planning on making signings from his native Spain, should the window go ahead as planned.

If rumours are believed to be true then Arsenal could have a so called ‘Cesc Fabregas 2.0’ on their hands.

So who is Carlos Soler and what could he bring to the Emirates?

Who is Carlos Soler?

Born in Valencia, Spain. Soler joined hometown club Valencia CF’s youth setup in 2005 at the tender age of eight after impressing their scouts playing for his local neighbourhood team. After initially playing as a striker, he was pushed back to an attacking midfield player because of stature, physique and impressive technical skills.

images

Soler’s role change didn’t stop there, he was further pushed back into the central midfield areas upon his graduation to the reserves. He made his first appearance for the reserves in May 2015, a 1-0 loss to UE Cornella in the Segunda Division B.

In December that year, he finally got off the mark scoring his first goal, the second in a 2-2 draw with CF Badalona. The following year, he was rewarded with a new contract and promoted to the first team. Soler was an unused substitute in Valencia’s 2-1 home win against Atletico Bilbao in the UEFA Europa League. His first team debut finally came in La Liga, in December 2016, coming on as a second-half substitute for Mario Suarez in a 3-2 loss against Real Sociedad. He scored his first goal for the club against rivals Villareal.

Since then, the Spanish under-21 international has never looked back, becoming a key figure for both club and at international level. He’s made 20 under-21 appearances for Spain, scoring 4 goals.

Why is Soler so highly coveted? What’s his style play?

One aspect that allows Soler to stand out, is his incredible versatility. He’s probably the only player in the Valencia camp capable of playing in a variety of positions. As a no.10, on the flanks, as a no.8 or a deep-lying no.6. His technique, vision, passing range, and remarkable ball control allows such variety in his game.

Under Albert Celades though, Soler is mostly deployed on the flanks. In Valencia’s last outing, their Champions League defeat to Italian outfit Atalanta, he lined up on the left in 4-4-2 system.

lineup (8)

Despite being knocked out in Europe, this is a system that has rewarded Celades in La Liga with the club lying in 7th place in the La Liga standings. It is a system which allows structure as well as fluidity and most importantly, creativity, thrust and pace on the flanks mainly through Carlos Soler and Ferran Torres. The former is the creative hub, the latter is the speed maestro.

Soler isn’t your traditional winger, one who beats his marker with a piece of trickery and gets to the byline to cross it in. Not to say he can’t perform those traits, but the Spanish under-21 midfielder isn’t renowned for it. Instead, he’s more of a wide-playmaker. It is a role translated as a player who acts as the team’s primary source of creativity, drifting inside to find space in between the lines from which to play the telling pass in the final third and create a variety of chances.

images

His freedom to roam out from his designated area doesn’t mean he shirks from his defensive responsibilities. In a defensive scenario, the wide playmaker will take up his position on the wing to provide cover for his full-back and also to maintain a solid shape when lining up in low blocks, or in two banks of four.

These are all traits in which Soler is appointed to fulfil and he does so with such efficiency and cutting edge. Soler is a fast and fine dribbler, as well as his extraordinary vision and passing. He is perhaps more dangerous when he cuts inside or takes up positions in behind the forward two of Gamerio and Rodrigo, threading fine through balls or disrupting the flow of an opposition defence, it allows the full-backs to roam upfield and provide an extra body in attack.

However, Soler hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons in terms of his goal contributions. In all competitions, he’s only registered 3 goals, and an assist in 25 appearances. In fact, Valencia aren’t amongst the most potent in front of goal. They’ve only scored 38 La Liga goals from 27 games, and hold a goal difference of -1. It doesn’t make for exciting reading, however, the league table doesn’t lie, they’re only 4 points from the Champions League places and they still hold a real chance of finishing in the top four.

This campaign may not be one to remember for Soler in terms of his goal contributions, however, he still adds so much more to Valencia’s traditional system. He may not be the quickest, but what he lacks in pace, he makes up for in his work-rate, tenacity and off the ball work. In La Liga, he’s averaged 0.8 tackles per game, 0.3 interceptions and has committed, rather tellingly, 1.1 fouls per game. Other than your exciting imaginative midfielder, he’s also a workhorse, a reliable performer. It’s no wonder why Celades continues to pick him week-in, week-out.

What could he offer Arsenal?

It’s unclear how Soler will fit in at the Emirates. Arsenal do not line-up in a traditional 4-4-2 setup in order for him to line-up as he does on the flanks. However, you could see why Arteta holds an interest in the player. It’s his vision, passing, technical acumen and Spanish traits that makes him an attractive acquisition.

There is the belief that Arteta could line-up in a formation that he worked so well with at Manchester City alongside Pep Guardiola. If Arsenal lined up in that system, it won’t be foreign to Soler, he is traditionally an attacking midfielder.

How Arsenal could line-up next season if they sign reported targets:

lineup (9)

He could line-up in a ‘free-8’ role alongside Dani Ceballos (providing he extends his loan from Real Madrid), one which lends him the opportunity to work in and around the no.10 positions while also helping out in defence too. Soler’s efficiency both in attack and defence as he has expertly shown since his breakthrough at Valencia could be a vital tool for Arteta if he lined up as shown above.

With much better performers alongside him, there’s no reason why Soler can’t become a much better performer at a bigger club.

Ten Young Superstars Likely to Change Clubs this Summer

Ten Young Superstars Likely to Change Clubs this Summer

With Euro 2020 and the Olympics suspended till 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak, it gives many clubs the opportunity to focus their attentions on recruitment and scouting potential targets. Despite the domestic competitions around Europe set to continue into the summer as a result of the pandemic, it is unclear whether it will have much of an impact on the transfer window with UEFA working out whether there will be changes. What we do know, is that while there may be little action on the pitch, there are still a lot of rumours flying off it.

Now more than ever, it really is wonderkid season, with clubs placing a more intense focus on recruiting young (and perhaps then selling high) than ever before. Don’t expect this glowing frenzy to stop anytime soon; in fact, it’s best to arm yourself with the knowledge of which of these wonderkids is sure to be choosing greener pastures this summer, who could be signing them and why they are so highly coveted.

Here’s a list of 10 of those key individuals (outside the Premier League) with big futures and who are sure to be at the forefront of your footballing reports come June:

Kai Havertz, Bayer Leverkusen

images

Time is certainly running out for Kai Havertz at Bayer Leverkusen. The attacking midfielder has been around for ages, and he’s only 20 years of age. Arguably one of the most exciting attacking midfield talents in Europe currently, he really needs a bigger stage to exert himself and show that he has what it takes to dominate the game for years to come.

He’s well on his way to achieving just that.

No disrespect to Leverkusen, he won’t be able to fulfil those lofty feats if he stays at the BayArena beyond this summer.

Since the turn of the year, the German international has been in red hot form:

The rough patch he endured before Christmas is well and truly in the past. An incredibly silky, smooth, left-footed playmaker, he just seems seconds ahead of everyone else on the pitch. He plays passes without looking, chips balls into runners no one else sees and returns his fair share of goals. He’s also remarkably cool in possession, like everyone else on the pitch plays at his tempo. He’s also incredible versatile too, capable of playing anywhere across the midfield positions but its behind the striker where you’d get the most out of him. Such an elegant and joyous player to watch at times.

Kai Havertz won’t come cheap. Bayer Leverkusen, now more than ever are resigned to losing him and it is believed it would take around €90 – 100 million euros to prize him away. It may be much, but considering the rate at which he’s performing and the remarkable potential in his locker, he’ll be worth every penny.

Jadon Sancho, Borussia Dortmund

image-2-1024x725

One of the most fearsome attacking talents in European football, and he’s just 19 years of age. It’s no secret of the tremendous talents and abilities that Jadon Sancho possesses these days. The former Manchester City starlet is enjoying an even better campaign than last at Dortmund, and the season isn’t even close to finishing just yet.

14 goals Bundesliga goals and 15 assists is truly outstanding. Rarely do you see a winger confidently and easily attempt to his beat his marker and perform it with such class and aplomb. Jadon Sancho oozes such extraordinary qualities. Wherever the player may be heading next, that lucky club will have to cherish and hold on to the player for dear life. Borussia Dortmund, currently don’t have that luxury, and like their German counterparts, Bayer Leverkusen, they are about to lose their most prized asset.

The club are looking to cash in this summer, and there are already a whole host of clubs lining up for his signature. His numbers tell its own story. Need we say more about Jadon Sancho? We do have to keep our eyes closely peeled on developments this summer, and the player himself will have to choose his next destination with much much caution.

Jude Bellingham, Birmingham City

image-2-1024x725

At just 16 years of age, we must be very sensitive as to the amount of hype and pressure we put on Jude Bellingham’s young shoulders. What’s impressive about the player though, is that at his tender age, he’s already such a vital component for Pep Clotet at Birmingham City.

The midfielder is deployed in a variety of roles, because of his tireless energy, remarkably tall frame and elegant style. Traditionally a box-to-box midfielder, Bellingham has also been tasked with performing duties out wide and he has fulfilled those roles with such brilliant maturity and understanding. He’s quick, agile, technically sound and holds a fire in his belly that so few players rarely possess. 4 goals and 2 assists from 32 appearances in such a high demanding league is a testament to his character and ability at such a young age, the future really is massively bright for Bellingham.

Manchester United and Chelsea have already sounded out their interest in the player with the former inviting him and his family to take a tour of their training complex. It’s lengths such as those that indicate how highly rated he is. First-team football has to be high on his agenda, maybe spending another year at St Andrews may be best for his development.

Timo Werner, RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig v VfL Wolfsburg - Bundesliga for DFL

Yet another player enjoying an extroadinary season in the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig’s hitman Timo Werner is certainly to watch out for in future. 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga appearances, only Robert Lewandowski can better those numbers. In all competitions, he’s scored 27 goals, including 4 in this years Champions League.

Werner has been a key component this season for exciting young coach Julian Nagelsmann as the club continue their impressive pursuit of their first Bundesliga title. 5 points behind Bayern Munich, and all hopes of closing in on the Bundesliga leaders hinges on the form of their main marksman. What’s also impressive of Werner is that he rarely plays closer to goal, he mostly operating on the left-wing, right-wing or in the half-spaces, playing the role of a withdrawn striker, but its his frightening pace, movement, positional understanding in and around the penalty area which makes him so deadly.

His link-up play is fantastic too. The German number nine has also contributed 7 assists, a true sign of his all around abilities. He’s not just a regular scorer, but he can provide them too. His next destination is unclear right now, despite his preference to play at Anfield. Will he get the required game time under Jurgen Klopp? It’s unlikely.

Werner’s ongoing development must be paramount in his decision making. You can’t rule him out staying at Leipzig too. The club as a whole is growing, he could be the poster boy of their impressive revolution.

Lautaro Martinez, Inter Milan

FC Internazionale v SPAL - Serie A

Argentinian Lautaro Martinez is amongst the finest young strikers in European football and this season, he’s shown why he has what it takes to become the best of the lot. Martinez is your typical modern-day striker. A complete forward with a fine balance of pace, strength, agility, aerial prowess and a relentless energy that makes him such a stubborn outlet in Antonio Conte’s rigid and shrewd 3-5-2 system. His partnership with Romelu Lukaku has come on leaps and bounds this season with 28 goals between them in Serie A.

If Inter still harbour any ambitions to finally knock Juventus off their perch come the end of the season, then they must keep their two strikers fit. There is also the small matter of Ciro Immobile and co at Lazio, but anything can happen once the season resumes. Lautaro Martinez’ contribution could easily swing the pendulum Inter’s way. It is unclear whether Martinez will remain at the San Siro beyond this season, and a Serie A triumph could swing his decision making. Barcelona are knocking on his door and there is no doubt that the player can become a cult hero alongside Leo Messi at the Camp Nou too.

The perfect replacement for Luis Suarez.

Ruben Dias, Benfica

image-2-1024x725

One of the most highly coveted young centre-backs in Europe right now. Benfica’s Ruben Dias is one player sure to be at the centre of much interest this summer. It’s even a surprise he’s lasted this long at the club, with many believing that the defender should have moved onto greener grass much earlier.

At 22 years of age, Ruben Dias is already in his third season as a regular. Partnered with fellow graduate Ferro, Dias is a highly influential figure in Benfica’s back-line who have just conceded 14 goals in 24 league matches this season. Benfica average 0.58 goals conceded per game, 0.12 less than any other team in the Primeira Liga or in Europe’s top five leagues.

Dias is largely to thank for this solid record. He organises the back line, is dominant both in the air & on the ground, and his calm, commanding presence is instilled across the defence. He has won 2.2 aerial duels per90, 3.4 interceptions per90 & 2/3 defensive duels on average. His ability to play out from the back is a key component too, much of Benfica’s impressive football stems from Dias and Ferro’s passing abilities from defence. Despite oppositions who typically prioritise sitting back and cutting passing lanes, Dias is patient and precise on the ball, a crucial factor in building Benfica attacks. The centre-back has completed 3.6 long balls per 90, with an overall pass success rate of 90%.

He’d be perfect for a team like Manchester City. Pep Guardiola is reportedly a big admirer also. Benfica are known for their shrewd player sales, and Ruben Dias will not come cheap.

Boubakary Soumare, LOSC Lille

Lille v Olympique Lyon - French League 1

If you need any knowledge on what constitutes a typical box-to-box midfielder, then Boubakary Soumare is your man. A truly powerful, quick and domineering presence in the middle.

He is a ball recovery machine, always hoovering up attacks, starting attacks with his direct and swift passing, or duelling someone for the ball, or ripping it off them. Against Chelsea in the Champions League in December, he was a nuisance. Recovering the ball 16 times. It’s no wonder why Chelsea quickly became interested in his services soon after the game.

And there are so many teams who could do with his metronomic, athletic and powerful presence in midfield. The queue for his services this summer could be an incredibly long one.

Sandro Tonali, Brescia

Belgium v Italy: Group A - 2019 UEFA U-21 Championship

We all miss Andrea Pirlo. A quiet and measured artist on the ball, yet his abilities and influence on the pitch was clearly noticeable from deep in midfield. Football may have lost such a decorated player, but we may have a Pirlo reincarnated on our hands in Brescia’s Sandro Tonali.

Not only does he look like the Juventus legend, but he holds similar abilities too. He plays the same deep-lying playmaker role that Pirlo helped shape into prominence, and although his club are on the verge of relegation from Serie A, he always stands out in most games.

At 19 years of age, Tonali has it all. Fantastic range of passing, vision, robust in the tackle, a good spatial awareness of his role, positional and tactical understanding and an almost inspiring trait of leading his team despite his tender age. It is just a number. He is so cool and calm on the ball, will play his way out of pressure, can dictate play with ease, scores the odd bullet from range and even has the same shaggy hair as Pirlo. He’s a bit stockier and more robust, though, and perhaps a little more mobile and two-footed, too.

Regardless of whether Brescia beat the drop or not, Tonali’s services are better served elsewhere. The footballing world needs Andrea Pirlo back, oh wait, we have the next best thing… Sandro Tonali.

Dayot Upamecano, RB Leipzig

image-2-1024x725

Like Ruben Dias, Upamecano is amongst the most highly coveted young centre-backs in European football. His calling cards has always been his tremendously athletic build and his amazing dribbling abilities from the back. His recovery speed is also one of his outstanding traits, capable of matching the most quickest and skilful forwards if need be. His unique traits also makes him perfect for the high-press, high-line, modern tactical approach and his powerful build has given him the opportunity to play senior football since the age of 17.

Under Julian Nagelsmann, his passing and on-the-ball decision-making have improved dramatically, and he’s put in some immense individual defensive showings in his own box this term. Against Tottenham in the Champions League, the defender put in an outstanding performance as Leipzig quite swiftly knocked them out of the competition. Assured on the ball, strong in the tackle, and a real leader at the back.

He’s another one on the list in which potential suitors could become such a long list.

Fabian Ruiz, Napoli

Genoa CFC v SSC Napoli - Serie A

Believe the upcoming hype surrounding Fabian Ruiz when it does come finally about. The Spanish international is reportedly a key target for Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid, and the player duly deserves such recognition.

The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the most talented midfielders in Europe and within a Napoli squad which is blessed with an array of talents, he is the most influential. One of the main attractions of Ruiz is not the consistent standout performances that he puts in, nor the ease with which he seems to set himself apart from his peers, rather it is the fact he appears to have no significant weaknesses to his game. In other words, he is the complete midfielder.

Although predominantly a left-footed player, Ruiz is more than comfortable transitioning to his supposed weaker foot, and this is complemented by his ability to play anywhere across the midfield – whether being utilised as a defensive midfielder, a central pillar, a creative attacking outlet or being deployed on the left or right hand side of midfield. It’s because of this versatility, he is now a regular feature for Spain at international level too. When watching Ruiz, he is player in which much attention is required rather than a quick glance. The way in which he controls the game, aids his teammates around him and his almost telepathic understanding with the forwards.

He may not score enough goals, but when he does find the net, it does become a regular box-office on social media. Either a cute, delicate curled effort from outside the box or a scorcher, the player is blessed with such a fine and unique skill-set. In all competitions so far in the 2019/20 season, Ruiz has contributed four assists, 1.8 key passes per game, 74.8 passes per 90 mins with a passing accuracy of 89.1%.

An intricate and influential midfielder, his talents are truly served on the grandest stage.

Arsenal Must Prioritise the Signing of Thomas Partey this Summer

Arsenal Must Prioritise the Signing of Thomas Partey this Summer

According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are considering moving for Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder Thomas Partey when the transfer window opens again in the summer.

The Ghana international, who put in a man of the match performance, helping Atletico Madrid overcome Liverpool in their round of 16 Champions League tie, is understood to be high on Mikel Arteta’s list of targets ahead of his first full season as Arsenal manager.

Partey, 26, holds a release clause in his current contract of around £45million and it is believed that Atletico are braced for a number of approaches this summer for the midfielder, and they are willing to let him go providing the full length of the clause is met.

The midfielder has quickly established himself as one of the most dominant defensive midfielders in Europe, becoming the bedrock of Simeone’s team ever since he made the step up to the first team in 2015. According to reports, Arteta has been mightily impressed by Thomas Partey, who has gone on to record 150 appearances for the club since his breakthrough year.

This is a player Arsenal are in desperate need of, hence their reported interest. It’s been over a decade since Arsenal possesses a dominant defensive midfielder, arguably since Patrick Vieira. One who is heavily efficient in breaking up play, halting counter attacks, a dominating presence in front of the defence and one who keeps things ticking over in possession.

Thomas Partey ticks all of the above characteristics.

The Ghanaian international’s performance against Liverpool at Anfield last week was simply stunning.

Performing his usual role, shielding the Atletico back-line. It may not have stopped Liverpool conjuring up a huge volume of opportunities to win the tie but Atletico’s resilience, energy and determination to survive the Anfield onslaught and stay in the game beyond 90 minutes is a testament to their never-say-die attitude.

Thomas Partey played a hugely significant role. He completed four tackles, four interceptions, four clearances, successfully blocked two shots, and completed two dribbles [WhoScored]. He also averaged a passing accuracy of 68% but Simeone’s side aren’t known for the possession stats, its their efficiency in both defence and attack that defines the whole team and Thomas Partey performed admirably as he usually does.

He’s arguably been Atletico Madrid’s most consistent performer this season despite their relatively below-par season by their high standards. Averaging 2.5 tackles in all competitions this season, 1.4 interceptions and a passing average of just under 85%. In comparison, Granit Xhaka – a regular in Mikel Arteta’s midfield – hardly comes close to recording those numbers. The Switzerland international averages just 1.8 tackles, and 0.8 interceptions. He does hold a better passing average but that’s solely down to Arsenal’s keep-ball philosophy.

It’s clear Arsenal lack the necessary quality in defensive midfield. Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi are decent options, yet neither of them have assured Arteta that they are equipped to lead from the back as of late. For too long, Arsenal have lacked a character in the middle, one who doesn’t mind getting stuck in or grabbing the responsibility of becoming a leader in the position. Thomas Partey is a player tailor made for the rigours of the Premier League. The Ghanaian would make an instant impact in the middle, remarkably improving Arsenal’s defensive efficiency and prowess.

Partey can fulfil a number of positions in a variety of setups. As a double-pivot midfielder in a 4-2-3-1, at the base of a midfield diamond or as a no.6 behind two free roaming no.8s. His positional understanding, awareness of danger and speed to cover a fair amount of ground in front of the back-line is a regular theme of his game.

Arsenal lack that presence in and around that area of the pitch and the potential signing of Partey would go along way in solving that deficiency. In fact, £45million in the current market is shrewd business especially for a player of Partey’s qualities. Mikel Arteta can ill-afford to ponder on such an acquisition.

It’s a no brainer.

Where Could Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell Be Heading Next?

Where Could Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell Be Heading Next?

With nine games to go in the Premier League, and six points from survival, its safe to say that time is running out for Daniel Farke and Norwich as they seek to miraculously beat the drop.

The club currently sit at the bottom of the league table, but there is a case to argue that they have not been the worst side to watch this year. In fact, Norwich are admirably amongst the most exciting teams to watch despite their position. One man who’s been an ever-present in Farke’s exciting setup, undergoing a fruitful first campaign in the top-flight is England under-21 international Todd Cantwell.

image-2-1024x725

If there is one element the club can shout about this season, its the emergence of the bright young winger. 6 goals and 2 assists in 29 Premier League appearances is an impressive return for a player embarking on his first full term in the top-flight. Norwich may be on their way back down to the Championship but Todd Cantwell certainly won’t be joining them.

The 22-year old is subject to much interest from Premier League clubs already, and is truly deserving of performing on a much  bigger stage next season, but who are those interested and how will Cantwell fit in?

Liverpool?

images

According to various reports, Liverpool are Todd Cantwell’s most likely destination. However, this is a potential move with its reservations. There is no doubting Todd Cantwell’s tremendous abilities and attitude, he is a player which certainly represents astute business for Liverpool but if Cantwell wants to be playing first team football every week, a move to Anfield may not be the most ideal decision for the player and his development.

With Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah looking to remain at the champions-elect next season. There are no guarantees for Cantwell to get the required game time he needs. If the Norwich City winger needs any examples, he can look no further than Liverpool’s January signing of Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg. Despite the Japanese internationals qualities, his game time has indeed been limited. It’s certainly ideal for Klopp to have options in his squad, but in terms of the individual’s growth and development, he hasn’t yet been given the opportunity to set the Premier League alight.

Todd Cantwell needs a club in which he can quickly establish himself as a first team regular, and an experience an environment in which he can improve his game and most importantly continue his rapid development. A move to the potential Premier League champions may not provide him with that luxury.

Everton?

images

As well as Liverpool’s interest in Cantwell. Merseyside neighbours Everton are also reportedly interested in the player. It is a move which could make perfect sense for both parties.

Everton’s current crop of wingers are all under performing as of late, and lacking the consistency to propel Carlo Ancelotti’s side to within the coveted European places. Bernard, Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi and Gylfi Sigurdsson combined, share just 8 goals and 7 assists between them in all competitions this season. A poor return considering their individual abilities. Everton have remarkably improved since Marco Silva departed in December, however it is unclear whether either one of the aforementioned players will remain at Goodison after this season.

Everton’s investment over the past few years has indeed been unsatisfactory, and a move for a young bright talent such as Todd Cantwell could represent quality business. A clear improvement on their record in the transfer market.

Most importantly, the Norwich starlet would be a welcome upgrade on their current options, and is sure to receive the necessary game time to improve and development much further especially under the tutelage of a well renowned and decorated coach in Carlo Ancelotti. A move to the blue half of Merseyside seems a much more plausible option.

Tottenham Hotspur?

images

According to The Sun newspaper, Tottenham have reportedly ramped up their efforts to snap up Todd Cantwell, after the player remarkably helped KO their FA Cup hopes. It is believed Spurs have been tracking the player for some time and Jose Mourinho is interested in signing him this summer. Tottenham do have a good record of snapping up young British talents, Dele Ali, Ryan Sessegnon and Jack Clarke to name a few. The club are hoping to continue that trend by boosting their wide options with Cantwell’s signature.

Tottenham already harness a number of options in the wide areas especially after the January signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven. However, Todd Cantwell is a different type of player. He may not be as quick as Son Hueng-Min, Lucas Moura and Bergwijn, but his qualities on and off the ball have been a stand out feature of his game for Norwich despite their lowly league position. His link-up play with Teemu Pukki and Emi Buendia has been a key feature of Norwich’s football this season.

The ability to mix up his game, perform in awfully tight spaces and his understanding of exploiting spaces in between the lines has propelled him to become arguably Norwich’s most influential performer. He’s averaged 1.1 key passes per game, 1.5 dribbles, and is fouled on average twice per game.

Tottenham Hotspur v Norwich City - Premier League

Tottenham this season, have regularly struggled to break down rigid defences, and Cantwell’s ball control, vision and movement could aid Mourinho much further heading into next season. It is unclear whether Cantwell could become a first-team regular under Mourinho, but there is no reason why he can’t further his learning under the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager.

The midfielder was a standout performer in their FA Cup tie and was a constant thorn in Tottenham’s defence going forward. He also took his penalty with consummate ease, a testament to his high confidence levels and maturity. A step up in the form of Tottenham Hotspur could be just the move he so desperately craves.

Arsenal?

images

Todd Cantwell recently admitted he’s an Arsenal supporter so a shock move to the Emirates cannot be ruled out. It’s going to be a massive summer for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta as the former Manchester City assistant coach aims to reshape his ailing squad for the new season. Arsenal are well short on numbers in the wide areas and a move for Todd Cantwell could well represent a fresh new direction and approach for the Arsenal manager.

It is unclear how much Arteta will be given in terms of funds to build for next season but it is believed a fee of around £30million will be enough to prize Cantwell away from Carrow Road. For much of the season, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been deployed as an auxiliary left winger, regularly cutting in field or as a withdrawn striker behind Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette.

He’s performed expertly well in that position, though his future will always gonna lie at the head of the Arsenal attack – providing he chooses to commit his future to Arsenal in the coming months. Reiss Nelson, Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe represent the only out-an-out wingers for Arteta, another two options are needed in the area, and the addition of Todd Cantwell may just prove a steel signing for Mikel Arteta for the future.
