The Top Six: What Do They Need For Next Season? (Part 2)

After careful evaluation of Potential Transfer Targets for Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, lets have a look at the rest of the teams in the Top 6…

Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s appointment in the summer will have divided opinion of the Manchester United faithful, but times have changed at Old Trafford and it had got to a point where there was nowhere else to turn.

The failed experiments of previous managers David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal, the club was on a slippery slope rather than a period of progression after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. Moyes and Van Gaal had left a broken shell of their former selves. ‘I think I found a sad club.’ Mourinho admitted.

Seven months in, Mourinho will be satisfied with the quality he has at his disposal. Certainly, he will want more with the club lying in 5th place in the Premier League table, 4 points from 4th and with 2 cups already to his name, Mourinho will be looking to build on that next season. United are sure to make improvements in the summer window, but who is on Mourinho’s hitlist?

Potential Transfer Targets:

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) – According to various reports, Antoine Griezmann is on the verge of completing a £86million move to Manchester United with claims that a transfer move this summer is now a ‘formality’. The French international has been on United’s radar for a while now, with Sky Sports Sources also reporting that United will be interested in securing the striker’s services if he does become available at the end of the season.

untitled
Antoine Griezmann has had another successful season for Atletico Madrid.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Atletico have also accepted that their star player will be on his way out as he prepares for a switch to a bigger club. Griezmann has 79 goals in 147 games for Atletico since his move from Real Sociedad, including 22 goals this season as he continues to prove himself as one of the best attackers in World Football.

If United do get their man, Mourinho will be looking at a star studded squad filled with bags of quality to properly compete on all fronts next season, especially fighting for the Premier League title.

Tiemoue Bakayoko (Monaco) – According to reports, Bakayoko has agreed personal terms with Chelsea to join Antonio Conte’s revolution at Stamford Bridge. If so, will Mourinho be missing out on a ideal replacement for the ageing Michael Carrick?

Bakayoko has enjoyed a fruitful season at Monaco after years of being on the periphery, Leonardo Jardim has revitalised the midfielder earning him a call up to the French team for the first team. The midfield powerhouse has been central to Monaco’s success this season with the club looking to secure their first Ligue 1 title since 2000, hoping to end the 4 year dominance of Paris Saint-Germain.

The midfielder has the technical skills, power and passing attributes to replace Michael Carrick next season, not to mention his tackling and ability to carry the ball from deep. Bakayoko could form a frightening partnership with fellow countryman Paul Pogba and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera – a midfield combination that has the ability to compliment each other.

Tiemoue Bakayoko could be on the move from Monaco this summer.

Victor Lindelof (Benfica) – A deal that is the least likely to happen this summer is the interest in Swedish hot prospect Victor Lindelof. The defender has committed his future to the club, signing a new deal that will tie him till 2021. Any plans of a summer deal for the defender may have been brought to halt, after the club were heavily linked with the defender in the January window.

Manchester City

If anyone associated with Manchester City football club thought they would be in for an easy ride at the start of the season after the appointment of manager Pep Guardiola, then they were wrong. With a few months to go until the end of the Premier League season, Pep Guardiola has had it tough so far as he looks to rebuild and take the club to greater heights. Certainly, the some of the football that City have produced this season has been nothing short of scintillating but if there is any weaknesses or chinks to Guardiola’s armour is his defence.

On numerous occasions this season, City have been found wanting at the back plus the uncertainty in terms of the goalkeepers haven’t helped either. A problem Guardiola will be eager to fix this summer as he aspires to take Manchester City to the next level. City are in for a hectic summer with City looking to release and sell the ageing and deadwood players in their squad as much as they are to buy players

With a £200million pound transfer kitty to spend according to reports, who could be on Guardiola’s radar this summer?

Potential Transfer Targets:

Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus) – According to the Manchester Evening News, Italian defender and Juve legend will be open to leaving the Turin club this summer if Massimiliano Allegri stays on as manager. The 29-year old has been heavily linked with the club even before Guardiola splashed out on John Stones.

The Catalan previously described Bonucci as ‘One of favourite ever players’ while he was Bayern Munich boss. And various reports have suggested that Bonucci has been approached by both Guardiola and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte about a summer move.

Bonucci would command a world record transfer fee for a defender, but his future reportedly hinges on Allegri’s future amid reports suggesting he could replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal if the Frenchman decides to leave at the end of the season. The Italian defender and coach Allegri clashed on the touchline during Juventus’ victory over Palermo in February. Bonucci has apologised to Allegri, but there are believed some friction between the pair, which in turn could lead to either bringing an end to their time at the club.

Bonucci has been the subject of intense speculation regarding a potential move to  Manchester City.

Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) – According to The Sun, Pep Guardiola wants Bayern Munich defender Joshua Kimmich has part of revamp of the City squad this summer. The £40million pound rated Germany star , who can play full-back, centre-back and in the midfield , tops the list of players Guardiola plans to bring in.

Guardiola gave the youngster his big break while he was coach at Bayern Munich last season, but Kimmich has only seen 42 minutes of football in the last 5 games under Ancelotti this season and is getting frustrated at his lack of playing time.

The full-back position is one Guardiola needs a lot of change in this summer and Kimmich could be the first of a couple signings in that department as Guardiola plans to rid of the ageing stars such as Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Aleksander Kolarov.

Guardiola is planning to reunite with young German starlet Joshua Kimmich.

Kingsley Coman  (Juventus) – Manchester City have targeted young French winger Kingsley Coman to be part of their Summer rebuild.

Guardiola brought Coman to Bayern Munich from Juventus on a long-term loan at the start of last season, and is keen to be reunited with the highly-rated 20-year-old. Bayern have the option to sign Coman on a permanent deal but it is reported that Ancelotti is unwilling to trigger the deal leaving Guardiola with the luxury to pursue the French international.

Sources in France suggest that they are ready to spend around £40million pounds to secure Coman’s services ahead of rival interest across Europe. Coman has no interest in returning to Juventus and was hoping to take advantage of the fact that Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben will no longer feature in Ancelotti’s plans because of their ages.

With Bayern seemingly reluctant to sign Coman on a permanent deal, City are ready to move to land a precocious talent they have scouted extensively during this season. Guardiola is looking to add Coman to his list of young attacking weapons such as Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus which will provide him with one of the most exciting attackers in Europe.

Manchester City are interested in securing the services of Kingsley Coman.

Jose Gaya (Valencia) – According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are also interested in securing the services of Valencia left-back Jose Gaya with Guardiola planning to reshape and revamp his defence. Guardiola feels Gaya would suit his planned philosophy at City perfectly.

Gaya who has extensive experience for Spain’s youth teams, has reportedly been on City’s radar for months with the club looking for an upgrade on current left backs Gael Clichy and Aleksander Kolarov.

Tottenham Hotspur

It has been another impressive season for Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham, although Chelsea look shoe-in to recapture their Premier league title being 10 points in front of their London rivals. Pochettino’s men lie second place and albeit a catastrophic slip-up, Tottenham are looking at another season in the Champions League next season and the fulfilment of finishing well above their arch rivals Arsenal after dramatically failing to do so last year.

With a FA Cup semi-final date with Chelsea on the horizon, Pochettino will be looking to add his first piece of silverware to what has been a steady, progressive and exciting project at White Hart Lane. Plans are already in place on their hopes for a new stadium, but could that have an effect on their transfer budget for this summer? It is most likely, this summer Tottenham will be focusing on keeping their star players such as Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane. Most importantly, trying not to lose Pochettino to Barcelona as they are in search for a new coach to replace Luis Enrique. Will Tottenham need to offload in order to sign players? That is looking all the more likely with Summer signings Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko on the agenda of being sold with both players failing to shine in their first seasons at the club.

But who would be on Tottenham’s hitlist if they were to spend this summer?

Potential Transfer Targets:

Ross Barkley (Everton) – Reports are emanating surrounding the future of Ross Barkley, suggesting the England international could be on the move to White Hart Lane this summer. The Everton has earned an England recall after rediscovering his form under Ronald Koeman in recent weeks.

Both Spurs and Arsenal are considering a move for Barkley as he mulls over his Everton future. Could it hinge on the future of forward Romelu Lukaku who has recently stated he doesn’t plan to sign a new contract at Goodison Park.

It is reported that Pochettino has stolen a march on Wenger to secure Barkley’s services as the Argentinian coach feels he could fit perfectly with fellow countryman Dele Alli. But will this move make sense? Christian Eriksen has expressed his desire to stay on at White Hart Lane, and it is highly unlikely that Barkley will be taking his place.

Nonetheless, Everton are desperate for Barkley to renew his contract with the club, with Koeman stating in his press conference either Barkley signs a new deal or leaves the club. Barkley wants to succeed at his boyhood club but at the same time has the desire to perform in the Champions League, an opportunity Everton are unlikely to compete in next season.

untitled
Could Barkley leave his boyhood club Everton this summer?

Isco (Real Madrid) – Pochettino has previously refused to comment on whether he could making a move for Real Madrid hotshot Isco this summer. Isco has been the subject of intense Transfer speculation regarding his future at Real Madrid with Tottenham being the likely club to secure his signature at the expense of Manchester City who are also believed to be interested.

Isco moved to Real Madrid from Malaga in 2013 but has struggled to secure a permanent place in the Real Madrid starting line-up, there is also the issue that Pochettino might struggle to fit the Spaniard into his own line-up which already contains Eriksen and Alli.

It is looking increasingly likely that Isco will b on the move this summer with reports even claiming that he could join main rivals Barcelona, much to the dismay of the Spanish playmaker.

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Real Madrid outcast Isco is sure to be on the verge of leaving the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Jean-Kevin Augustin (Paris Saint-Germain)

French Newspaper L’Equiqe reported Tottenham could be interested in the services of Jean-Kevin Augustin and are hopeful of landing the 19-year-old if PSG do go along with the supposed plans to sign a back-up to Edinson Cavani.

Augustin has made only a handful of starts under PSG coach Unai Emery this season and has become frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities, it is mentioned the youngster may consider an exit from the club.

Tottenham are looking for another back-up to Harry Kane after Vincent Janssen has disappointed in his first season with only 1 goal from open play to his name. Kane patrols the striking duties up front for Tottenham, however, Augustin may be aware that he may have to swap a No.2 position for another if his were to make the switch the White Hart Lane.

The Top Six: What Do They Need For Next Season? (Part 1)

The Top Six: What Do They Need For Next Season? (Part 1)

Written by: Adrian Addai

Chelsea have really taken a stranglehold on the Premier League this season and have left the chasing pack in the distance. With the amount of money being spent last year in the closed season, I highly anticipate this summer more transfer records being broken and more money being spent generally around the Premier League. The rest of the top six will be competing to get closer to Chelsea and will flex their financial muscles undoubtedly to bridge the gap and maybe compete for the Premier League crown.

Anthony Onifade and I will be previewing possible transfer targets for the top six and where they may need to strengthen and improve to realistically have a real title challenge for the 2017/2018 season.

Arsenal

Arsenal’s big problem before they can build is sorting out the futures of Arsene Wenger, Ozil and Sanchez. The latter two I think will be pivotal in attracting world-class talent to improve this stagnant squad. The areas of concern for Arsenal will be to  bring in an 20-25 goals a season striker as well as a dominant figure in the centre of midfield. Wenger has recently put his faith questionably in Francis Coquelin but if they hope to get to the latter stages of the Champions League and potentially win the Premier League their going to need more quality and experience in that department.

Potential transfer targets:

Idrissa Gueye (Everton)  Gueye has a solid season for Everton and has been sounded out as the new N’golo Kante, hence why Everton paid for him in the summer of 2016. Potentially he could add some much-needed quality to the Arsenal midfield.

Alexandre Lacazette (Olympique Lyon) The French striker is impressively second in the Ligue 1 scoring charts only behind Cavani  and stands with 23 goals in 24 games. He  would add a different dimension to Arsenal’s attack in comparison to Giroud.

Benjamin Mendy (AS Monaco)  The marauding 22-year-old left back has had an impressive season with Monaco showing his defensive and attacking capabilities throughout the campaign. I recall the 2nd leg match against Manchester City where he created a superb assist for Fabinho to put them on course for the Champions League quarter-final. He terrorised Mans City defence all night and many scouts from big European clubs will definately have their eyes on him this summer.

lacazette
Lacazette has been in inspired form scoring 23 goals so far this season.

Chelsea

How do you improve a team that looks to be winning the league at a canter? Well Antonio Conte will not be resting on his laurels and will look to improve this dominant Chelsea side for next season where they will be in more competitions and will want to compete in the Champions League. Conte will look to replace Terry who does not look like he will be signing a new contract in the summer. Also, on his list will be cover for Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso as they get through a lot of work as wing backs and with more games next season they will need cover in a demanding season.

Potential transfer targets:

Alessio Romagnoli(AC Milan) Romagnoli is the future of Italian football and at only 21 years old he may have a big future ahead of him. It is rumoured that Chelsea had a bid rejected for him last summer, but I am sure they will test their resolve again by coming in with another bid.

Tiemoue Bakayoko(AS Monaco) If we are to believe the rumours Bakayoko has agreed personal terms with Chelsea and all that needs to be sorted is the transfer fee. If this transfer does go through Chelsea will be acquiring one of hottest young prospects in the game today and would a formidable midfield partnership with  N’golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.

Romelu Lukaku(Everton) Lukaku  has been rumoured to be on Chelsea radar as a potential replacement for Diego Costa.Costa was unsettled in January and could potentially looking for a summer move, which would pave the way for the return of Lukaku, who has stated that he wants to play at the highest level in Champions League. Chelsea could indeed make that a reality if their offer proves too good to turn to down for Everton.

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Lukaku is in contention to win the golden boot leading the scoring charts with 21 goals so far this season.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp will be pretty happy  with the way his attacking players have performed this season, especially the relationship between Sadio Mane, Roberto Firminho and Phillipe Coutinho. Where his problems lie is in defence where they have conceded more than any of the top six teams and he will be looking to rectify that so they can really put a strong challenge for the title next year. I think his priority will be getting a new goalkeeper in between the sticks and an experienced centre back to partner Dejan Lovren. Also, I think they might be in for a striker too as Klopp does not trust Daniel Sturridge to be the  number one striker.

Potential transfer targets:

Joe Hart (Manchester City,) Joe Hart has recently admitted that ‘something may have to give’ this summer as he prepares to have showdown talks with Pep Guardiola. Hart seems resigned, knowing that Guardiola does not see him in his first team plans and that he may have to move from the Etihad permanently to get first team football. Liverpool have well documented struggles with their goalkeeping position all season and I feel Klopp may just test the waters to see if City will be willing to sell to another top six club. If they do Klopp will be getting a previous title winner and a very experienced one at that too. I think it is a no brainer for them if Joe Hart does become available in the summer transfer market.

Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund) Having failed with a bid for the 18-year-old American last summer, there is a lot of reports that Liverpool will be back for the teenager this summer. Klopp is thought to be an admirer of the young American and noticed him in Dortmund’s academy during his stay at the club, he previously became Dortmunds youngest goalscorer in the Champions League with a goal and assist against Benfica in the round of 16. However, any deal to sign Pulisic will most likely come with a hefty price tag as he has just recently signed a deal to stay at Dortmund till 2020. If they do manage to secure his services he will add to Liverpool’s attacking strength in-depth and provide competition for places with the likes of Coutinho, Firminho and Lallana.

Steve Gibson (Middlesbrough) This may come as a surprise target for Liverpool, however Steve Gibson has been attracting a lot of attention from top half clubs and with Middlesbrough in a scrap to survive relegation this season he may just be looking for pastures new next season. Although, Middlesborough find themselves in the wrong of the table they still maintain the best defensive record apart from the top seven in the league. This can be largely down to Steve Gibson being a rock at the back for Middlesborough which has coincided with his first senior England call up. If the rumours are believed to be true, Liverpool would be getting a very good prospect for the future with experience of playing in Premier League and would go some way to improving their defensive frailties having conceded fifteen more goals than the current top side Chelsea.

Tiemoue Bakayoko… The One that Got Away For Manchester United?

Tiemoue Bakayoko… The One that Got Away For Manchester United?

According to Sky Sports Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, Monaco’s French powerhouse midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko has agreed personal terms with Chelsea.

Only a club coming in with a better deal to match Chelsea’s bid for the midfielder, can have any chance of securing Bakayoko’s services. Newspaper reports are circulating around the potential deal.

According to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea believe they are in pole position to land the Monaco midfielder. The 22-year-old – called up to the French national team to replace the injured Paul Pogba – is being chased by a whole posse of European clubs. According to other newspapers such as The Sun and Metro are reporting that he has rejected the advances of Manchester United in favour for a move for the Premier League champions-elect instead.

Bakayoko is believed to favour a move to Chelsea as boss Antonio Conte plans to improve the squad for the new season in August. Conte was rejected by Radja Nainggolan. But the Italian now sees the emergence of Bakayoko as a better option – to invest in future prospects.

Tiemoue Bakayoko scores a goal past John Stones
Tiemoue Bakayoko nets the decisive goal against Manchester City in the Last-16 of the Champions League.

Bakayoko has plied his trade at Monaco since 2014 when he moved from Rennes where he had progressed through the youth ranks. The French midfielder has been a renaissance in the brilliant Monaco side who are impressing the whole of Europe with their entertaining performances in both the French Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

He was pivotal to Monaco’s away goals rule victory over Manchester City in the Last-16 of the Champions League scoring the decisive goal as Monaco progressed to last 8 despite a 6-6 aggregate score line.

Monaco’s midfield enforcer has drawn comparisons to Manchester City’s Yaya Toure who also started out Monaco before realising his full potential when he joined the mighty Barcelona. There are reasons to believe that Bakayoko is starting to realise his potential in principality too, with many believing that he will eventually follow in the Ivorian’s footsteps.

After two difficult seasons at the club, the 22-year-old has finally matured and put his combination of power and speed on the ball and vision in midfield to good use. He has contributed strongly to Monaco’s rise to the top of Ligue 1. Along with Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy,  Thomas Lemar, Fabinho and Jemerson, Bakayoko has been part of core of young players truly flourishing not only in Ligue 1 but they are impressing everyone in and around the Champions League. Leonardo Jardim’s side have scored a phenomenal 87 goals in 30 league games – its only logical that their young crop of young stars are being pursued by the top clubs in Europe.

Monaco v Tottenham Hotspur - UEFA Champions League - Group E - Stade Louis II
Tiemoue Bakayoko in action for Monaco.

If the stories are believed to be true on the potential deal to take Bakayoko to Chelsea, has Jose Mourinho missed a trick in signing the ideal replacement for Michael Carrick?

Bakayoko is an imposing figure in Midfield – and while he used to be slender in his times as a youth, he has developed and grown into an athlete of great physical prowess. He is quick, reads the game well, and makes a lot of interceptions midfield – if you need an indication, just analyse his performance over the two legs against Manchester City – strong in the tackle, while he can also build play with his passing and good dribbling skills. It is easy to see why comparisons with Yaya Toure abound.

Manchester United are believed to have been following his progress closely, and have drawn up a list of potential replacements for legend Michael Carrick – and Bakayoko certainly fits the bill, but reports are emerging that he has agreed a deal with Chelsea and that could prove to be a loss for the United hierarchy.

His technical ability, power and speed on the ball could have been a huge asset to United. A perfect foil in midfield for Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera. While Carrick has been blessed with his vision and amazing ability to pick a pass, the addition of Bakayoko could add so much more to United’s midfield – their very own Yaya Toure.

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Bakayoko has been ever present in Monaco’s impressive Champions League campaign.

Bakayoko could have provided much more security than Michael Carrick who is sure to leave United at the end of the season. With Bakayoko behind the likes of Pogba and Herrera, Mourinho would have the luxury of a tenacious, powerful and skillful unit in midfield.

If Chelsea do get their man, Conte would have got himself a very intelligent midfielder who is sure to dominate the Premier League if his move to Chelsea comes to fruition.

Whatever happens, it is sure to be an exciting summer of transfer moves, rumours and news – especially in Monaco mind you!

Antonio Valencia Showing Why He is United’s Most Reliable Performer.

Antonio Valencia Showing Why He is United’s Most Reliable Performer.

Antonio Valencia puffed out his cheeks when scoring the clincher against Middlesbrough in a 3-1 victory on Sunday. He well might, at a time when fatigue and tiredness have proved to be a concern for Manchester United in the wake of such a demanding schedule both at home and abroad in Europe, the Ecuadorian right-back continues to defy belief with his all-round action displays.

Earlier on in the season, Mourinho heaped much praise for Valencia:

“It’s a privilege for us to be able to keep such a good player and man… He is simply the best right back you can have. There is no better right back in football.”

Big praise but perhaps not a surprise considering the fact that Mourinho admitted that he tried to sign Valencia as his right-back during his tenure at Real Madrid.

Antonio Valencia celebrates scoring United’s third in what was an impressive individual display against Middlesbrough.

When Victor Valdes slipped in the closing stages of the match to allow Manchester United to put the seal on a 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough, it was a simple tap-in for Antonio Valencia. But the question is, what was he doing up there? A testament and an example of his impressive work-rate and sacrifice for the team, he marked his 200th appearance for the club with an impressive display.

The Ecuadorian was virtually playing in two positions at the Riverside. It certainly was reminiscent of the position he was deployed when he first made the move to Old Trafford, when United had the ball. Without the ball, he dropped closer to his normal role with Eric Bailly shuffling alongside Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in a three at the back system.

Jose Mourinho explained his tactical decision at the end – ensuring that Valencia only had to “run 50 metres rather than 100” all the time and that tactical manoeuvre paid dividends as United came out victorious in what was a rugged and hard-fought display against the relegation strugglers Middlesbrough.

Fellaini celebrates his goal with team-mates
Fellaini celebrates his first Premier League goal against Middlesbrough.

Nonetheless, it was yet another all-action performance from a player who is enjoying his most impressive season in a United shirt. Awarded, United’s player of the month for November and January, he is also having a magnificent March as well, not only in the Premier league but in Europe too.

The former winger has admitted he doesn’t see himself “100 per cent” as a full back and demonstrated as much at Middlesbrough where he was rather utilised as a wing back in United’s new look system. He has revelled in the role of sprinting into wide open spaces even when coming from a deeper starting position. In a recent interview, he stated he feels 21 again in Mourinho’s game plan, and statistically with no fewer than 50 sprints at the Riverside he can bomb up and down the flanks like a 21 year old.

As has often been the case this season, it was all rather fluid but there was no doubt, when it was all hands to the pump in the closing stages, that Valencia was being asked to perform on the right of defence. With the home fans behind them, Boro threw everything at United but the South American was not satisfied with just a 2-1 advantage.

With the clock about to tick into the 94th minute, on the back of some outstanding performances against Chelsea and FC Rostov, earlier in the week, the rampaging wide man was not thinking of hacking the ball away and taking a breather. He charged down the flank one more time trying to chase a lost cause, putting Valdes under an alarming pressure. The former United keeper misjudged the ball and slipped allowing Valencia to score his first goal for United since January 2014.

Was that the easiest goal he will ever score? It may look like it but it is far from it, the tenacity and work-rate to get to that point can only be admired. For Sir Alex Ferguson, using Valencia as a right-back was the only option when chasing the game. Louis Van Gaal deployed him there on numerous occasions but it is under Mourinho where Valencia looks to be flourishing.

Impressively, only midfielder Ander Herrera has successfully completed more tackles than Antonio Valencia for United this season. The Ecuadorian has been hard to get past, and has done well on one-on-one situations. While orthodox full-back  Matteo Darmian has been beaten 20 times in his nine Premier League appearances, Valencia has been beaten only seven times in 24 appearances. A record that few defenders can match this season.

Valencia has made more successful crosses from open play than anyone else
Valencia has completed more crosses from open play this season.

The attacking qualities of Valencia is there for all to see. Only Paul Pogba has completed more dribbles this season than Valencia and the threat posed by his crossing has been a dangerous weapon – a weapon Zlatan Ibrahimovic is making the most of. Valencia has delivered 39 crosses from open play this season, more than any other player currently playing in the Premier League.

Having started his last 11 league games for the club, there will be plenty of chances to build on that impressive tally as United go all out to try and secure Champions League football next season. Judging by Valencia’s relentless pressing in the 93rd minute against Middlesbrough, Mourinho needn’t worry about his full-backs fitness and fatigue.

The 31-year old is adored by his manager and team-mates – the third longest serving player in the team right now – who feel he is the best right back in the world. His quiet demeanour off the pitch means he does not always get the recognition or praise he deserves. Certainly Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be favourite for United player of the year gong but Valencia’s performances and attitude should not be ignored.

Mourinho may be right – Antonio Valencia should be considered one of the best right-backs around.

Five things we learned from West Brom vs Arsenal

Five things we learned from West Brom vs Arsenal

1. Away day blues for Arsenal in the Premier League

As the full-time whistle blew at the Hawthorns boos rang around the stadium from the Arsenal fans. This is now three consecutive away defeats on the trot for Arsenal, and it may be understandable that two of those defeats were against Chelsea and Liverpool but it is inexcusable to capitulate in the way they did against West Brom. More worryingly their only wins in the last seven games across all competitions have come against lowly non-league sides. With the games running out, may Wengers saving grace come in the FA Cup. #Worrying Times

2. Arsenal do not learn their lessons from set pieces.

Arsene Wenger warned as much that West Brom’s main threat would come from set pieces and it would be up to Arsenal to deal with that physical battle inside both boxes. Yet time and time again they prove to be naive and mentally weak. Before Dawson scored his first from a corner, you could see the big defender with plenty of room inside of the box nobody getting close to him and inevitably he rose highest to get a head to the ball to flick it into the far corner. Jamie Redknapp in the Sky sports studios at half-time screamed about the lack of leaders in the team especially from set pieces where they knew West Brom would be so dangerous. So then to concede the third goal in the same fashion was inexplicable, where three West Brom attackers could have actually scored. It begs the question where is the characters in this team? Are the players taking responsiblity? Because it is their reputation’s on the line and this now could turn into a dismal season for Arsenal.

3. #Wenger out banners going nowhere any time soon.

During the first half of this must win game for Arsenal, an aircraft could be seen from the sky raising the banner “NO CONTRACT, #WENGER OUT”. The Arsenal faithful are getting restless with the situation where they find themselves in the dark on whether Arsene will sign a new contract or not. From these banners we know what the majority want and as the full-time whistle blew, many more banners seemed to be coming out in various sections of the Arsenal support. This is a truly testing time for Arsene and his players and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back with a FA Cup semi-final to come and race to get into the top four now.

HD Wenger Out Banner Arsenal
Arsenal Fans protest with a banner during the first half at the Hawthorns

4. Arsenal facing an uphill task to reach the top four.

A win today could have moved them three points behind Liverpool and put pressure on them for their away fixture against Manchester City. However, they somewhat choked again and could find themselves in a real uphill battle to get into the top four and could find themselves sixth and eight points behind Liverpool as we go into the international break. With difficult fixtures in their next seven games against Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United this could prove to be a key point of the season for Arsenal.

5. West Brom finally beat one of top six in the Premier League

West Brom had reached the magic forty point mark for the season and could have been forgiven for easing off the gas come the final stretch of the season. Nevertheless, they had a great attitude towards the game and although Arsenal had more than 70% possession West Brom largely dominated the game and were always a danger from set pieces. Having previously gained only one point from their previous meetings against the top six clubs this season, they finally got that monkey of their back and dispatched of Arsenal quite easily in the end.

Ross Barkley Repaying the Faith Shown By Ronald Koeman.

If you ever need a classic example of great man managerial skills then look no further than Ross Barkley’s upturn in form for Everton. Sometimes praise comes from unexpected quarters. Barkley had spent much of the season as the recipient of managerial criticism. After he helped outclass, West Bromwich Albion in a 3-0 win for Everton, the player had found his fan club had swelled and the criticism stifled as Barkley was subject to tributes from both Koeman and Tony Pulis.

The tune and doubts have changed, the sound of constant carping had been replaced by something more upbeat. Just before Christmas, Ronald Koeman questioned whether Barkley will fill his potential, eleven league games later – capped off with seven victories – an underachiever had immediately transformed into what has been destined to be. The manager though, remains unapologetic about his policy of tough love.

Ross Barkley has been rejuvenated since the turn of they year.

What Barkley is doing now is totally different, the January addition of Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United added with the steel of Idrissa Gueye, Barkley and youngster Tom Davies have found much freedom to flaunt their ability which has seen Everton draw closer to the top 6 in the Premier League table. Both in terms of his positioning and his productivity, Barkley has found a new lease of life.

Koeman has become the second man to reinvent the England starlet. Former coach Roberto Martinez inherited a substitute and marked his arrival at Goodison park by installing Barkley as his main creator, even before selling the previous incumbent Marouane Fellaini. Koeman is building a dynasty around Barkley, even without giving him a fixed position to play.

Instead, the stability of those behind him gives Barkley the platform and security to play. Koeman has constructed a midfield brimming with confidence and energy. His new signings Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye undertake the donkey work while Barkley and Tom Davies roam around the in form Romelu Lukaku – which in turn not only provides Lukaku with opportunities but also allows the Belgian powerhouse the space to manoeuvre. Against West Brom, Koeman selected Barry to keep possession, a change that proved vital to Everton breaking through West Brom’s stubborn resistance.

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
The addition of Morgan Schneiderlin has added a much needed steel in the Everton midfield.

“We don’t need players like Barkley on the half-way line. We have enough players behind the ball,” Koeman explained.

“We need players like Barkley between the lines and close to the box. We need him to have shots, to have assists and that is one of his big qualities. The boy is so strong, so good on the ball. He is shooting left, he is shooting right, he is clever, he sees chances.”

Here, Koeman expertly identifies Barkley’s qualities which has led to the England starlets upturn in form and with a England call up to boot as well as coach Gareth Southgate named his squad on Thursday morning for games against Germany and Lithuania to come.

As we’ve grown accustomed to in recent weeks, Barkley’s ability on the ball mixed with his strength and eye for a pass is the qualities that Koeman has been trying to release out of the player and the balance between defence and attack has allowed Barkley to flourish.

Ross Barkley's Everton contract has just over a year left to run
Barkley’s form has been a result of the stability and security provided by Koeman’s new look midfield.

With the No.10 position so obsolete, Barkley has a freer role, playing ostensibly off the right with a licence to roam, a tendency to raid and a habit of making those Gascoigne-esque rampaging runs. Earlier in the week, former West Ham striker Dean Ashton heaped praise on Barkley for his recent performances and compared him to the great Paul Gascoigne.

Ashton told talkSPORT:

“We all saw Ross Barkley’s talent when he came into the Everton team. He’s as close to Paul Gascoigne as I’ve seen in my time watching football – the way he can go past players, that strength skill and speed.”

Koeman’s midfield makeover has lent Barkley a new look, a new and better self-confidence. In one respect, he has proved Everton’s organic replacement for the injured Yannick Bolasie as the dribbler chief in the team, the man charged with providing unpredictability in the Everton attack. In another aspect, Barkley is providing efficiency. His last five games has mustered a goal and three assists. That’s what Koeman wants, the goals and assists – the numbers to prove how he is positively effecting the Everton attack, providing Romelu Lukaku with the ammunition to fire Everton to a European spot which Koeman has long desired even during his short spell at Southampton.

Ronald Koeman expects Romelu Lukaku to retain the support if the Goodison Park faithful
Premier League Top scorer (21) Romelu Lukaku has benefitted from Koeman’s tactical makeover.

His performances have impressed Koeman recently, and maybe the constructive criticism that the Dutch coach has been employing maybe have to die down a little. Barkley’s form has rewarded him with an England call-up after being overlooked by three national managers in a calendar year. He was the only attack-minded player in the Euro 2016 party Roy Hodgson did not use in France.

Barkley was a victim of competition for places, with the precocious Dele Alli and Adam Lallana chosen over him , and rightly so as a result of their performances for their respective clubs – plus Wayne Rooney, granted the protection of the captaincy, being the preferred No.10s. His new role and form gives Southgate options. Barkley may not be your traditional winger but with his ostensible positions on the flanks for Everton may afford him the opening at International level that he has craved ever since he burst through the scenes.

If so, Koeman, a tormenter of England in his playing days, may belatedly make reparations and cut down on his tough love for the player – Barkley’s renaissance is due to take another step.

Premier League Preview and Predictions (Week 29)

Premier League Preview and Predictions (Week 29)

It feels like the end of the season is upon us, but there are still a lot of big games to be played and a lot of points to be won both at the top and bottom of the Premier League this week. It is week 29 of the Barclays Premier League and it has thrown up some mouth-watering fixtures including Liverpool vs Manchester City and Tottenham vs Southampton.

I will be previewing all ten games this week and leaving my score predictions for each game.

West Brom vs Arsenal

This is a game Arsenal can ill afford to lose being six points behind Liverpool as it stands. Arsenal will not be going into this game in the best of form having only won two of their last five Premier League games, however this is a must win game and I am sure they will be fired up for it. On the other hand, West Brom are quite comfortable in the league standings at the moment lying in 8th position and I feel yet again that Tony Pulis has done a great job and is a dark horse for manager of the year. This will be a tough game for Arsenal but I feel they might just nick it.

Score Prediction: West Brom 1-2 Arsenal

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Is it another week on the bench for Alexis Sanchez?

Sunderland vs Burnley

I feel if Sunderland are going to have any chance of surviving relegation, they have to win this game. Defoe will be buoyed with the recent news that he has been given a England call up and I think he will be the difference again. Burnley has had a great season but their Achilles heel has been their away form this season and I don’t see them getting anything out of this game.

Score Prediction: Sunderland 2-0 Burnley

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Jermain Defoe’s form this season earns himself a surprise call up to the England squad.

Stoke vs Chelsea

I can’t see anything other than a Chelsea win here, they are winning this Premier League at a canter and with Kante in the heart of their midfield it really feels like they are playing with an extra man. Stoke have done well this season and lie in mid table where they have no chance of being relegated, but they will be looking to add another scalp to their name. Unfortunately, I just don’t think it is going to come against this strong Chelsea side.

Score Predictions: Stoke 0-2 Chelsea

Crystal Palace vs Watford

Two back to back wins for Palace has lifted them from the relegation zone and Allardyce finally looks like he has got them playing how he wants them to. On the other hand Watford’s season feels like it’s fizzling out they sit mid table and are in no real danger of relegation. Not having won in any of their last three games I don’t see them winning at Selhurst Park.

Score Predictions: Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford

Everton vs Hull

Everton have been really strong at home this season and Koeman looks like he has found the perfect balance with the midfield and attack. They will be disappointed with the result away at Tottenham last week and will be looking to bounce back. Hull under Marco Silva have been remarkable at home where they seem to be collecting most of their points, however I feel Everton will be too strong for them in this instance and win comfortably.

Score Predictions: Everton 3-0 Hull

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Top scorer Romelu Lukaku has just recently rejected a contract extension at Everton.

West Ham vs Leicester

I can’t believe I am saying this but Leicester are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, England’s last remaining hope, a brilliant performance last week but I feel that may have taken its toll on them for this weekend. West Ham have perhaps flattered to deceive this season at the Olympic Stadium, but they have quality players and I feel they will take advantage of Leicester tiredness and collect the three points before this international break.

Score Predictions: 2-1

Middlesbrough vs Manchester United

This is a huge game for Middlesbrough they need to get something out of it especially after the sacking of Karanka. The players are going to need to show fight right up until the end of the season if they have any chance of getting out of the relegation zone. Manchester United will be disappointed at going out of the FA Cup this week but will now concentrate on the Europa League and a place in the top four. Ibrahimovic and Herrera will be banned for the game but I feel United should just have enough to get past what will be a dogged Middlesbrough side.

Score Predictions: 0-1

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Middlesbrough’s season took a turn for the worse with Aitor Karanka’s sacking.

Tottenham vs Southampton

Don’t be mistaken Harry Kane will be a huge miss for Tottenham with the news he will be out for four-six weeks, however they do have goals in Dele Alli and Eriksen which Pocchetino will be relying on for the next couple weeks.Southampton have had a long rest since their last Premier League game so you wonder how fluid they will be? But with a goal scorer like Gabbiadini, I feel they will believe they will always be in the game, saying that I am going for a draw here.

Score Predictions 1-1

pic_2015-01-11_FCBvsAtMADRID_27_v1421019049
Harry Kane has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks – will it prove costly to Tottenham’s ambitions?

Manchester City vs Liverpool

This game should have a lot of goals in it, with both defences shown to be vulnerable at times this season. Cities have an abysmal recent record in the Premier League against Liverpool having not won any of the last four games, however they need to pick themselves up after the midweek disappointment in the Champions League. Liverpool seem to have gotten in to the knack of winning ‘ugly’ as they showed against Burnley last week. They have a faultless record against the top 6 and I just see them getting something out of this game.

Score Predictions: 2-2

Bournemouth vs Swansea

Bournemouth will be have been delighted with their last two results, a draw away to Manchester United at Old Trafford, and a victory over West Ham – and with Josh King in such spirited form, Eddie Howe would believe his side will pick their second victory in the calendar year against Swansea City.

After defeat to Hull City – a game they could not afford to lose – Paul Clement will hope his team can bounce back with a victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium. It is vital that Swansea keep Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente fit if they are to keep themselves in the Premier League, the two have become vital cogs in the Swansea attack. There could be goals in this one.

Score prediction: 2-2

Josh King has been Bournemouth’s player of the season so far with 11 goals to his name.

Massimiliano Allegri Should Be the Front Runner to Replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Massimiliano Allegri Should Be the Front Runner to Replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Following a turbulent few weeks in the Arsenal camp – stemming from the humiliating 5-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich, speculation has increased regarding the future of Arsene Wenger. Ex-players and fans have grown frustrated at the lack of desire and commitment throughout the Arsenal team – leading many to believe that the problems are arising from the Arsenal management.

Ex-players such as Ian Wright, Thierry Henry and Martin Keown have voiced their concerns and disappointment at the performances of late especially the Munich defeat in the Champions League. Ian Wright on BBC Radio 5 Live and Match of the Day publicly stated that Wenger personally revealed to him that he thinks his time in the Arsenal dugout is drawing to a close.

Although Wenger may have openly stated his desire to put pen to paper and sign a new agreement with the Arsenal hierarchy, it has failed to put an end to the rife speculation about who may replace the French coach. The potential vacant position at Barcelona with Luis Enrique leaving at the end of the season, a few rumours have spread on Wenger becoming the new coach at the Camp Nou. Asked if he would be tempted in taking over from Enrique, Wenger said:

“No, my preference has always been the same and will remain the same. I am not looking for jobs in other clubs or jobs for other people. I am just focused on me.”

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Wenger’s future has been called into much question since the 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Wenger may have openly dismissed his interest in the Barcelona job but his future at Arsenal is still up in the air. The Frenchman has yet to sign a new contract with the Gunners, despite his current deal expiring at the end of the season. Wenger, 67, has reiterated his desire to continue managing next season whether at Arsenal or not.

What remains to be seen is whether Wenger will sign the new Arsenal contract offered to him, and with Arsenal being at the centre of controversy and criticism in recent weeks, the future of Wenger – a man who has established and imprinted a legacy that will be at the forefront of the future of Arsenal football club for many years, certainly the growing frustration surrounding the fans and ex players is understandable but there is the danger Arsenal may find themselves in an even worse position if Wenger is to eventually call it quits in the summer which may force the board to stick with Wenger for another year and keep the club afloat.

Amidst of all the rumours and speculation on Arsene Wenger’s potential successor, one name has been ringing around more than anyone else – a name that may not spark fires and excitement around the Emirates but a name of proven winner, a born leader and a man who is course to register yet another domestic double to his belt at Juventus – Massimiliano Allegri.

Could Allegri be the man in the Arsenal dugout come next season?

The man in the Juventus hotseat has reportedly told friends he has decided to leave the club to become the new manager at Arsenal at the end of this season, according to various reports in Italy. Although he has openly denied these rumours according to Sky Sports, we can’t rule anything at this point, stranger things have happened.

The Italian has been strongly linked with replacing Arsene Wenger and appears to be keen on joining the likes of compatriot Antonio Conte in the Premier League which will serve up an interesting start to the 2017/18 Premier League season with a host of top quality managers plying their trade in the English top-flight. If Allegri was to become Arsenal manager, he would be joining the likes of Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, Slaven Bilic and Ronald Koeman – a list of some of the top quality coaches in World football.

The 49-year old is into his third season as Juventus coach, but the search for his replacement has reportedly already begun as he has chosen to move on and take on the chance to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates. According to Italian newspaper Calciomercato, Allegri has been involved in a number of bust ups with his players most notably with Leonardo Bonucci after a recent win over Palermo. And the former AC Milan feels he has not been backed by the club chiefs which has led Allegri to tell friends he will try his utmost best to end this season on a high with Juventus still in with a chance on completing a treble with the Serie A, Coppa Italia and the Champions League up for grabs.

Is Allegri the right man to take Arsenal forward?

So what will Massimiliano Allegri bring to Arsenal if he was to become manager next season?

A Winning Mentality

Sure, Allegri isn’t as beloved as the other candidates to replace Arsene Wenger, but he has something to his CV that none of them can boast about, and that is trophies. Major trophies. He’s won the Serie A title three times once with AC Milan and twice with current champions Juventus. The club is on its way to completing a third Serie A success under Allegri barring a complete self-destruction. Juventus are currently top of Serie A and Allegri looks like making it 3 league titles in a row, 4 league titles overall. In comparison, Arsene Wenger, has only won the Premier League three times in his 20 years as Arsenal manager. Certainly, the Premier League is a different kettle of fish, but look if we look at what Allegri’s fellow compatriots have achieved – last season Claudio Ranieri done the unthinkable and won the Championship with Leicester City and now Antonio Conte, former Juventus and Italy coach is about to reclaim Chelsea’s Premier league crown in his first season in England.

Allegri is a born winner with 3 Serie A titles to his CV.

Moreover, in his first season as Juventus coach, Allegri guided the club to Champions League final. Although they were outclassed by Barcelona at the final hurdle, it was an achievement that had never been reached by his predecessor. He also impressively beat Real Madrid in the semi-final in that year, where Madrid were shoe-in favourites to meet Barcelona in the final.

Also, Allegri has also won the Coppa Italia for the last two seasons, completing and then retaining a domestic double. As things stand, Juventus are on course to make the final of the Coppa Italia again, meaning if Allegri was to leave at the end of the season he will have won three domestic doubles in a row. An incredible personal feat.

Massimiliano Allegri honours

AC Milan
Serie A – 2010/11
Supercoppa Italiana – 2011Juventus
Serie A – 2014/15, 2015/16
Coppa Italia – 2014/15, 2015/16
Supercoppa Italiana – 2015

Allegri would bring steel and a winning mentality. Something Arsenal have been crying out for a number of years. Maybe the time is right for fresh ideas at the Emirates, and Allegri could be the man. So what else could he bring to the Arsenal camp?

Tactical Flexibility

When Arsene Wenger picks a formation, he sticks to it. Wenger’s hallmark for a number of years has been the 4-2-3-1 formation. Even if it doesn’t fit the players available, Wenger would always turn to the style which makes us question his tactical flexibility and nous? There’s no doubting the ability of Wenger and what he has achieved but is clear his inability to adapt his tactics has hindered Arsenal for a number of years – maybe the reason they have not won the Premier league title since 2005. Why not try the nous of Conte or Mourinho who adapt their tactics and playing style according the opposition, Wenger’s problem is that he always seems to focus on the way his side is playing and not focusing on how the opposition can affect his team which has led to his downfall in a number of big games this season.

Allegri, on the other hand is tactically flexible. Throughout his managerial career, one of his defining traits is his ability to change formation and style during a match if things are not going in his teams favour. His use of the different variations such as the familiar 4-2-3-1, the three at the back system (3-5-2) and the 4-3-1-2 have become a saving grace for Allegri during his time at Juventus and if he was to make the trip to the Emirates this summer, it is a change that the Arsenal faithful will have to get used to and one which could be once again Allegri’s plan if he was to take the reigns in North London.

Overall, Max Allegri might not be the glamorous managerial appointment that the Arsenal faithful want. But he is the probably the best candidate for the job, an almost impossible job taking over the reigns of one of the greatest managers ever to grace the game. Maybe it is time for fresh ideas at the Emirates. Allegri’s record proves he is a born winner, it is just what Arsenal need.

Gareth Bale’s Return Could be Real Madrid’s Most Significant Weapon in the La Liga Title Run-In.

Gareth Bale’s Return Could be Real Madrid’s Most Significant Weapon in the La Liga Title Run-In.

Gareth Bale made a goal scoring return from an ankle injury as he scored Real Madrid’s second in a comfortable 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Morata’s goal put Real Madrid on top and they found themselves in an utterly dominant position, though they left it late to kill of Espanyol – despite 13 corners being awarded their way – when Bale picked up Isco’s pass on the left and fired home to confirm the three points.

The win saw Real Madrid move to within four points of Barcelona – only for Messi and co to grab a last gasp victory at home to Leganes which narrowed the gap back to a point – with Real Madrid still holding two games in hand over their El Clasico rivals.

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
In his first match since November, Gareth Bale showed no signs of rust, sewing up the three points with a late goal

Welsh superstar has been out of action since undergoing surgery on an ankle tendon problem in November. News of Bale’s return will also have spread across the Wales camp ahead of next months vital World Cup Qualifier against Republic of Ireland in Dublin. Chris Coleman’s men are third in Group D, four points behind the Irish, who lead the group after 4 games. The return of Gareth Bale will be a much needed boost to Coleman as the whole nation is in dire need of a positive result when they head to Dublin in March.

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Gareth Bale was injured in the Champions League group fixture against Sporting Lisbon in November.

Nonetheless, as the title race hots up in La Liga with Real Madrid still leading the way, one point ahead of Barcelona who have intensified the pressure on Zidane and his players. But with 2 games in hand for Madrid – a chance to further stake their claim for a first La Liga title since 2012 – they can move to within 7 points of their direct rivals.

The return of Gareth Bale would be a welcome sight for Zinedine Zidane and his men as they search for their supremacy in Spain’s top division since they won the title back in 2012 – an awfully long time especially for a club of Madrid’s stature and the return of Gareth Bale could just be the icing on the cake for Madrid as he closes in on a return to top fitness and form.

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Gareth Bale’s return could be the vital weapon in the Real Madrid arsenal.

Certainly, Bale hasn’t been sorely missed by his team-mates as the continue the chase for the La Liga title with Lucas Vazquez, Isco and James Rodriguez proving suitable replacements since the Welshman’s absence – showing the strength in depth Zinedine Zidane has available to him in comparison to title rivals Barcelona who rely so heavily on the work of the glamorous trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez. With Barcelona in a sort of free-fall after their demolition at the hands of PSG in the Champions League last week, Real Madrid would want to capitalise on their games in hand and steal a march over Luis Enrique’s men.

Nevertheless, Gareth Bale’s trademark finish from Isco’s intuitive pass showed no signs of rust or lack of match fitness, as he raced towards goal before he left footed shot travelled across Diego Lopez and into the far corner – a goal Zinedine Zidane would want to see more of as the race for the La Liga title intensifies.

Certainly, Real Madrid can be delighted with the competition for places at their disposal. James Rodriguez, Vazquez and Isco all have the ability to accommodate Gareth Bale on the flanks for Real Madrid, but Zidane is more than likely to restore Gareth Bale to the starting XI which is not only a welcome sight for the French coach, but for strike partners Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema who will be drooling at the added impetus in attack.

pic_2015-01-11_fcbvsatmadrid_27_v1421019049
Bale’s return gives Real Madrid an added dimension in attack.

Gareth Bale was already becoming Real Madrid’s most important player before his injury, and by the end of the season that fact could be seen clearly if Real Madrid recapture the La Liga title that has been beyond them for nearly 5 years. Cristiano Ronaldo is finally accepting the limits of his body – hence his adaptation to the no.9 role alongside Karim Benzema -Ronaldo has become generous in his game, we have seen him helping and assisting others rather than going for goal himself which will help Gareth Bale’s return to full fitness.

The rotation worked again for Zinedine Zidane and the team is clearly responding to the targets this season. The Champions League is a major pursuit, but above everything else, the La Liga title is their main priority this season. The return of Gareth Bale will be massively vital to any of those aspirations.
