Do Chelsea Need Reinforcements in January?

Do Chelsea Need Reinforcements in January?

After a summer largely spent on the sidelines watching the transfer market unfold for their rivals, Chelsea are free to do business once again. The club were given a two-window ban by FIFA in February for breaching rules on signing young players. However, judgement was made on Friday to lift the ban by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Make no mistake, this news will be greeted as a victory at Stamford Bridge, but, is there really a pressing need for Frank Lampard to invest in January?

16 games into the new season, and Lampard’s young and improved side are exceeding expectations sitting fourth in the Premier League 5 points in front of Manchester United in fifth place. While the club would have been looking on jealously at their rivals splashing the cash before the season, the transfer ban has allowed Lampard to build from within and that faith in youth is reaping its benefits.

Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James are all enjoying such fantastic season so far. Had Chelsea avoided the ban in January, there could be a case to argue that none of these players would be enjoying such key roles under Frank Lampard.

1189572047.jpg.0

It’s ironic that the ban was imposed on the club for breaching rules on the signing young talents when their very own youngsters are excelling currently. Chelsea may have lost a full fledgling winger in Hazard but Pulisic’s slow but progressive introduction has arguably made up for the loss of their former talisman. Also, Mateo Kovacic, bought permanently from Real Madrid is a key figure in midfield for Lampard, recapturing the sort of form that impressed Real Madrid while he was at Inter Milan.

Kovacic and Pulisic’s integration into Lampard’s first eleven has given the squad a fresh impetus merged with the many youngsters Frank Lampard has placed his faith in. However, with Chelsea’s transfer ban now lifted, as stated publicly, Lampard does indeed want to improve his squad going forward and there could be re-reinforcements in January. The club legend according to The Athletic has held active discussions with director Marina Granovskaia, technical and performance adviser and former goalkeeper Petr Cech and Scott McLachlan, the club’s head of international scouting.

Already, Chelsea have drawn up a list of targets they are trying to actively pursue over the next two windows. Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner are amongst those top targets. It is widely reported by the Telegraph that Lampard has been handed a kitty of around £150million to spend. While the potential to add to his squad may seem tempting, Frank Lampard must be cautious not to disrupt squad harmony amongst his promising camp.

Chelsea’s performances this season have been as a result of the discipline, culture and mentality that Lampard has rapidly instilled into the club after the uncertain and rocky aura of his predecessor Maurizio Sarri. It’s arguably because of Chelsea’s ban that Lampard has been allowed the freedom and room to manoeuvre without much pressure. The emergence of players such as Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount who have become significant pillars in Lampard’s attack has been a breath of fresh air within the camp and has allowed Lampard to almost shape Chelsea’s identity from scratch.

There is much belief that this current squad with some thorough additions could become serious title challengers within the next two years and possible winners within the next 4-5 years which means Lampard’s recruitment over the next few windows will have to be strategic and the right ones that fit the ethos and mentality of a team he is already succeeding in building. The Chelsea legend has managed to blend in experience with youth with the likes of Willian, Jorginho and Cesar Azpilicueta becoming the bedrock of his new Chelsea. The squad is stocked with talents both in the midfield and at the back, but with Giroud and Pedro likely to seek pastures new and Barkley’s future looking uncertain, a dip in the window may seem necessary.

Burnley FC v Chelsea FC - Premier League
Frank Lampard has exceeded at expectations at Chelsea so far.

While its important to remain cautious in the recruitment, it would be ideal for Lampard to recruit players ready to take that next level. Ben Chilwell, Nathan Ake and Wilfried Zaha all fall into that category with all three becoming key figures at their respective clubs, and all hold relative experience in the Premier League. A move across bluer waters certainly won’t stagnate their progression.

Chilwell is a boyhood fan of the club and is already close friends with Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi whom he has known since childhood. With much of Lampard’s youngsters fully ingrained in the England squad along with Chilwell, it will be very plausible for Lampard to recruit the left-back especially addressing a pressing need in a position that is probably the weakest in his squad with Marcos Alonso and Emerson all failing to impress the Chelsea boss so far this season. It is highly unlikely Leicester will be willing to sell next month. It is a deal that would make more sense for next summer.

Nathan Ake is a former Chelsea product himself and would fit in seamlessly, while Wilfried Zaha holds the imminent desire to play Champions League football, you wouldn’t back against a potential deal between Chelsea and Crystal Palace to happen in January. It has also been reported that Lampard would be interested in taking Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund with the player supporting the club since he was a kid, but if the interest is believed to be true, Sancho’s potential move could scupper the progress of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic. Zaha would be easier and cheaper to sign that Sancho, with a offer £60million-£80million believed to be enough to convince Palace to sell. Though, there could be ramifications involving players already at the club if a deal is to take place.

1189572047.jpg.0
Wilfried Zaha is desperate for Champions League – is there a potential January move to Stamford Bridge on the horizon?

There are certainly options there for Lampard to explore, and with the issue of the ban now erased, it is a celebration that the club can finally add to their squad, but its also vital to keep in mind the type of players they may bring in. The squad may not need strengthening in January, but if Lampard is to delve into the market he must make sure they are players ready to come in and make an instant impact rather than disrupting the squad as it is. If Chelsea are to get themselves amongst Europe’s elite and domestically, the next few windows will have to be approached with much consideration and thoroughness.

Are RB Leipzig Serious Contenders for the Bundesliga Title?

Are RB Leipzig Serious Contenders for the Bundesliga Title?

The appointment of one of Europe’s youngest coaches, 32-year-old Julian Nagelsmann ahead of the 2019/20 campaign was met with much anticipation, excitement and widespread optimism after RB Leipzig had finished third in the Bundesliga under Ralf Rangnick – a well-renowned coach in his own right.

Nagelsmann, who made a name for himself after 4 impressive years at Hoffenheim – guiding Die Kraichgauer to their first Champions League campaign in 2017 – was seen by many, as an upgrade on Rangnick the perfect man to take RB Leipzig to the next level. 13 games into the new season and Leipzig find themselves second in the Bundesliga standings, a point behind Borussia Mönchengladbach.

1189572047.jpg.0
Nagelsmann has continued to impress his suitors at RB Leipzig.

Leipzig are currently the league’s highest scorers, 49 goals from 14 matches, and have also the joint third best defence conceding just 16. During his spell at Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann adopted a similar style and philosophy to what Rangnick achieved at Leipzig; both sides were compact in midfield, operated within vertical lines in the middle, counter-attacked swiftly and also thrived off wining the ball back deep into the opposition half. While Rangnick preferred the counter-press, Nagelsmann is favouring an all out high intensity pressing philosophy.

The 32-year old coach managed to get the best out of the players he had available to him at Hoffenheim last year, working wonders with the likes of Florian Grillitsch, Kerem Demirbay, Andrej Kramaric and Nadem Amiri. In a team considered an average side at best, Nagelsmann transformed them into world beaters.

Now, Nagelsmann harnesses one of the most complete sides in the Bundesliga, blessed with immense talent all over the pitch.

Three months into his new post at the Red Bull Arena, Nagelsmann seems right at home within his new surroundings. The inconsistencies of German’s two giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have allowed the others a shot at the top. Mönchengladbach and Leipzig have accepted the invitation with open arms.

1189572047.jpg.0

Now questions are being asked whether Leipzig are good enough to mount a serious threat to Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance.

14 games in, and Leipzig are certainly playing like a side with the wind in its sails. However, it hasn’t always been plain sailing. They have endured their own blip from the end of September and throughout October. During that run, they lost to Schalke and Freiburg, drew twice and were also beaten by Lyon in the Champions League.

That drop in form came after such a rapid start to the season with five wins from six games, the only blemish was the inspired draw at home to champions Bayern Munich. A game which will have provided Nagelsmann much optimism for the season and a further reminder of their title credentials.

As of late though, Leipzig are enjoying a period of invincibility, since their 2-1 defeat to Freiburg at the end of October, they have won six in seven – scoring an outstanding 27 goals in the process. Also, they are currently top of their Champions League group with anything other than a defeat in the last group fixture enough to secure top spot.

Under their new boss, Leipzig have often lined up in a 4-2-2-2 shape, one that the players are familiar with.

lineup
How Leipzig lined up in their last outing – a 3-2 win against Paderborn.

It is a shape that allows compactness, fluidity and an opportunity for them to press and counter press as a cohesive unit. Throughout this season, Leipzig have enjoyed the opportunity to exploit teams in between the lines, through overloading the wide areas of the attacking third and also through quick transitions. It’s no surprise that their fluid formation is fully in sync because of their awfully quick pawns. Players such as Timo Werner, Youssef Poulsen, Christopher Nkunku, Marcel Sabitzer all hold the speed and agility required to become so devastating on the counter.

Left-back Marcel Halsternburg is equally pivotal in their transitional play. It’s the constant rotation between him and the front four players that confuses defences and causes panic. For example, Mainz were forced to change their shape numerous times in order to counter-act Leipzig’s relentless fluidity. It proved fruitless as Nagelsmann’s side ran out 8-0 winners.

While Leipzig’s system has been dynamic, it has also gotten the best out of their front four. Whether its Werner, Poulsen, Schick, Sabitzer, Forsberg or Nkunku, Nagelsmann can be confident in the fact that his side will have no problems scoring goals. Sabitzer and Forsberg have been incredibly efficient this season, with the latter recapturing the sort of form that made him one of the best attacking midfielders during the 2016/17 season.

1189572047.jpg.0
Emil Forsberg has once again emerged as a key force under Nagelsmann.

Forsberg has registered six goals and three assists both domestically and in Europe this season, while Sabitzer has registered an impressive eleven goals and three assists. Along with Nkunku, they have often proved deadly when operating in between the lines or the ‘half-spaces’. It allows Leipzig’s full-backs the opportunity to wreak havoc and occupy the space left by the opposition full-backs.

Then there’s the potent front-line of Timo Werner and Youssef Poulsen, a duo that has to be considered one of the best in Europe. Werner’s sheer speed, ability on the counter and Poulsen’s size, work-ethic and hold play makes the two strikers such a deadly force in attack. With the array of creative talents behind them, Poulsen and Werner have no problems scoring goals. The German striker already has 19 goals in all competitions this season, 15 in the Bundesliga, only second to Bayern’s goal machine Robert Lewandowski. His tally is all the more impressive when you consider that he does most of his work creating overloads in the wings rather than operating centrally.

1189572047.jpg.0
Timo Werner is enjoying another remarkable season in front goal.

This is a squad packed with quality and its not only in attack where it all lies. Nagelsmann has also transformed the midfield and the back-line. No longer are Leipzig giving away cheap goals like they used to, you’d have to be really on form to breach such a well-knitted and well rounded unit. Diego Demme and Konrad Laimer are two unsung heroes for Nagelsmann, players that so often go unnoticed. Industrious, hard-working, bullish and at the same time awfully composed on the ball, a key reason as to why Leipzig are currently the second best defence in the league.

At the back, RB Leipzig harness a wealth of players who could become stars in the future. French duo Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate are two players built for the big time. You’ve also got the experience and know-how of Hungarian international Will Orban, versatile player Stefan Ilsanker and youngster Nordi Mukiele – a fine centre back but an ever better right-back.

A club intentionally built for progression and growth in its players, strategy, philosophy and remarkable fan base. Leipzig have achieved so much since its inception in 2009. Over a decade later, they could find themselves at the pinnacle of German football come May 2020.

Bundesliga title contenders? You bet!

5 Centre-Midfield Options OGS Should Consider in January

5 Centre-Midfield Options OGS Should Consider in January

The recent draws over Sheffield United and Aston Villa will have provided Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plenty to ponder heading into the festive period. It is evidently clear that United need major work in their midfield. With the absences of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, Solskjaer was left to rely on Fred and Andreas Pereira to firm up the middle, a partnership which has failed miserably.

United have often lacked invention, creativity and the maturity needed to pose as a threat this season and it is evidently clear that Ole requires quality midfield reinforcements in the winter transfer window.

With January fast approaching, Ole will be hoping to firm up his list of targets but who could those targets be and what could they bring to Manchester United?

Ivan Rakitic

1189572047.jpg.0
He maybe surplus to requirements at Barcelona, but Rakitic still possesses the qualities to become a force elsewhere.

Ivan Rakitic has somewhat become a ghost figure at Nou Camp, ushered into the shadows by Ernesto Valverde. However, there is no doubting about the professionalism and quality of the Croatian and one which could be incredibly useful to his next club, if he does leave the La Liga champions.

United have shifted away from the short-term signings as of late, but will not be a crime for Ole to divert from that philosophy and go for Rakitic in the January transfer window. Signing the Barca man will make perfect sense, especially when United are in desperate need of a dynamic midfielder. During United’s enthralling draw with Sheffield, Gary Neville on Sky Sports commentary rightly pointed out the lack of leadership and maturity in the middle, and repeatedly claimed that United’s midfield setup ‘was not a midfield’ with neither Fred nor Pereira taking the onus upon themselves to impress in the absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba. It was a similar case against Aston Villa as United once again to exert their control especially in front of their own fans.

Not only would Rakitic provide an extra option in the middle, but the experience and leadership of a player with such a decorated CV would certainly aid United’s lack of maturity in the middle. His trophy cabinet boosts of 4 La Liga trophies, 4 Copa Del Rey’s, a Champions League and a Europa League honour.

With Manchester United’s route to Champions League qualification looking bleaker by the week, a strong push for Europa League maybe on the cards and harbouring a player of Rakitic’s experience and quality could provide the Norwegian with just ingredients he needs, even if it is short-term.

Ivan Rakitic is a player of international class. United are evidently starved of such.

Sandro Tonali

1189572047.jpg.0.jpg
Sandro Tonali has regularly been compared to a certain Italian midfield legend.

From a short-term option back to a quality long-term one.

Brescia’s Italian midfield maestro Sandro Tonali is a player earmarked for greatness, and is reportedly on the radar of many top clubs around Europe, including Manchester United.

Self-labelled as a blend between Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso, Tonali possesses the necessary qualities to become the best of his generation. The 19-year-old has received much high praise despite playing for a club currently bottom in Serie A. The Italian international – who helped Brescia to the Serie B title last season – has already been linked with the likes of Inter Milan, Napoli, Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester City over the past six months.

Tonali has featured three times for his country, most recently completing 90 minutes as they secured qualification to next years European Championships against Bosnia and in the 9-1 rout of Armenia this past month. Being a very efficient, energetic and technically gifted young player, he possesses excellent passing range, vision, and is blessed with an array of unique skill sets. Tonali is also a leader among men at the tender age of 19.

Manchester United are currently clueless in midfield and Ole requires a player who can spur the team on when the odds are stacked against them. Sandro Tonali, even in his teens, boasts those characteristics.

There is no doubting the idea that Tonali could successfully grace the Premier League. He could become the first among a whole host of young talents ready to grace the elite stages in world football. It’s only right Manchester United harnesses one of them.

Boubakary Soumaré

Lille v Olympique Lyon - French League 1
The French league may just be too little a stage for Boubakary Soumaré.

When was the last time Manchester United harboured a true ball-winner and box-to-box midfielder rolled into one?

Almost never. Lille’s Boubakary Soumaré is a player fitting that mould.

Tall, quick on his feet, and a powerful presence on the ball and in the tackle. Soumaré is a player deserving of a grander stage. If Solskjaer’s reported interest in the player is true, then the Theatre of Dreams could be the perfect platform for him to take his game to the next level.

A a midfield trio of Soumaré, Fred and Paul Pogba could be a devastating one. It has been widely reported that Solskjaer has scouted the player on several occasions this season, including Lille’s Champions League group match draw against Valencia in which Soumaré put in an outstanding performance, showcasing his unique and dominant abilities in the middle of the park.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSHt6t4BN44&t=329s

United lack a midfield player, barring Paul Pogba when on song, who can grab games by the scruff of the neck with marauding runs from midfield and breaching defences within an instant. This is where Soumare enters the scene, possessing all those necessary traits. The French midfielder is freak of nature on the counter and effective when driving through opposition lines, not to mention his unbelievable passing expertise.

The Theatre of Dreams desperately needs its aura and excitement back. Soumaré could be that facilitator.

Sander Berge

Liverpool FC v KRC Genk: Group E - UEFA Champions League
Sander Berge has been mightily impressive in his two showings against Liverpool in the CL this season.

Sander Berge is a player built for the big occasion, literally.

The Norwegian is a man mountain. 21 years of age, standing at 6 ft, 3 inches.

Well known in the gaming world of Football manager, the Genk midfielder is equally impressive in real life too and is said to be one of the brightest young midfield prospects in European football. Having stood out in the Champions League this season – including the two group fixtures against Liverpool – Berge is attracting a whole of interest from clubs around Europe with Jurgen Klopp also reportedly keeping an eye on his progress. It is believed that £40million-£50million will be enough for Genk to part with Berge. If so, United will need to get in on the act right away.

When it comes to abilities, Sander Berge has it all.

Efficient in the press. Fantastic when dribbling, powerful in the tackle and holds the relative experience and character needed to become an instant success in the Premier League. All at the age of just 21. It’s clear United lack a mighty presence in midfield, and with Nemanja Matic’s influence on the wane, Sander Berge may just be the ideal candidate to strengthen United’s engine room. What’s also good about Berge is his influence on those around him. When he plays, Genk are a much better and dominant force.

What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could do with a midfielder of the ilk of Sander Berge is an interesting question.

Nicolo Zaniolo

1189572047.jpg.0
A player with such an enormous potential – the future of Italian football.

Yet another talent primed for much more.

Manchester United are reportedly willing to pay £52million for Roma’s attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo. For a player of his incredible young qualities, 50 odd million may be too small to secure his signature. Rated close to £70million, the 20-year-old playmaker’s current contract at Roma runs till 2024.

Primarily an attacking midfielder, Zaniolo also possesses the qualities and the nous to operate on the flanks or as a roaming playmaker within the setup of a 4-3-3. It is clear, Solskjaer’s options in the creative department just aren’t good enough. Lingard, Andreas Pereira and Juan Mata are decent squad players on paper, however, they do not hold the necessary qualities to lead United back amongst the best. If Solskjaer holds any ambitions to get United there, Nicolo Zaniolo is just the player needed to fit the bill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRVqa2fC77U

The wonderkid recently netted a brace for Italy and already has 7 goals and 2 assists for club and country in 17 games. Manchester United aren’t the only ones interested in his services. Paris Saint-German and Tottenham are also reportedly keeping tabs on the Italian. An excellent player to watch and arguably the sole reason for Roma’s upturn in form in recent weeks. As well as possessing an eye for the pass, and an incredible understanding tactically, Zaniolo also holds a knack for the audacious. Whether its a piece of trickery or scoring a stunner, he is a player fully capable of getting fans off their seats.

Old Trafford needs that personality back, and Zaniolo seems the perfect fit. Zaniolo could be tough to secure in January because of his recent new contract, so any potential deal for his services may have to wait till the summer.

Solskjaer can ill-afford to wait that long. United’s failings in the middle need to be addressed as soon as.

Which Tottenham Players Could Enjoy a Rejuvenation under Mourinho?

Which Tottenham Players Could Enjoy a Rejuvenation under Mourinho?

Jose Mourinho is the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur after the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss has signed a contract which will run to the 2022-23 season, a deal that has reportedly made him the second highest paid manager in the Premier League behind Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.

With Tottenham languishing in 14th place in the league, on their worst run since the 2000-2001 season and without a single away win in 2019, Daniel Levy made the decision to relieve Mauricio Pochettino of his duties. The news has received some mixed reactions with many questioning the timing of the decision. However, it is one Levy felt was needed as “regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.”

In comes Jose Mourinho, and one many hope will have been refreshed and reinvigorated from his year out of a job after his sacking by Manchester United in December. There are many problems on the agenda for Mourinho to address but one which seems more significant than most is re-igniting the fire and desire back in players which Mourinho stated ‘excites him’.

The Portuguese coach is well known for his previous fall outs with high profile players and Daniel Levy is certainly taking a risk in appointing Mourinho, but what cannot be denied about the former Chelsea coach is that he offers a winning culture and and a siege mentality, it’s either his way or the high-way and a direction which will certainly spur on some of the players in the dressing room but which of them could benefit most from Jose Mourinho’s appointment?

ERIC DIER?

EJ0DBqFXkAAJPD9

A long term target for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. Eric Dier has endured a difficult year in North London and has somewhat been on the fringes of the squad because of various injuries and illness. Although, he did start Pochettino’s last game in charge at home to Sheffield United before the international break, it is clear that Eric Dier needs a career injection and some fresh confidence and Jose Mourinho could provide him that.

With Euro 2020 fast approaching, Eric Dier currently finds himself out of Gareth Southgate’s plans for England and will be looking to force himself back into the managers thinking as the season progresses.

Dier’s career has faded over the past year. After appearing to be on cusp of embarking on a bright career in his first few seasons under Pochettino, it is the recurring injuries and form that has seen him drop down the pecking order. However, with the midfielder now seemingly fit and Mourinho reportedly a keen admirer of the player, there is no reason why Dier can become a key figure for Tottenham once again as Mourinho plans to reshape the squad. Mourinho requires his players to run through brick walls for him and give it their all, Eric Dier certainly falls in that category.

Whether Mourinho utilities him as a centre-back or a defensive midfielder is another matter entirely, but his potential re-emergence under the former Manchester United manager could become the catalyst for a career revival.

DELE ALLI?

0_Manchester-United-v-Leicester-City-Premier-League

How Mourinho plans to rejuvenate Dele Alli will be one of his biggest tests as Tottenham manager. It has become abundantly clear that Alli is a shadow of the player he was couple seasons ago. The former MK Dons midfielder has only scored twice in the whole of 2019, a true reflection of the kind of form Tottenham have embarked on in this calendar year. Gone are those days when Alli used to be the forefront and the face of Pochettino’s new Spurs, he was a player with charisma, confidence and an aura that so effortlessly ran riot along with Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen to become one of the most feared attacking trio the club had ever experienced.

It’s as though Alli has become a victim of his early success. Once one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted attacking lieutenants a year ago, he now finds himself out of the international picture with James Maddison and Mason Mount deservedly emerging as two of England’s brightest attacking midfielders. As it stands, it is incredibly difficult to see Alli regaining his spot in Southgate’s plans. Whether his poor form is as a result of a burnout from the World Cup last year, or just a lack of confidence, there is some major work to be done for him to recapture the form that made him one of the best young midfielders around. Still only 23, time is on Alli’s side. It will be a huge task for Mourinho but one the Portuguese will relish in.

Mourinho loves getting the best out his high calibre midfielders and Alli is no different. Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele, Wesley Sneijder and Mesut Ozil have flourished under his leadership in the past. Maybe the Portuguese tactician could inject the swagger back into Alli’s play. Mourinho’s sudden appointment may have just come at the perfect time for him.

TANGUY NDOMBELE?

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa - Premier League

Former Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele could ultimately be the pick of the bunch under Jose Mourinho. Ndombele is arguably the most gifted midfielder in the whole Tottenham squad and may just be the player to benefit most out of Mourinho’s pragmatic style of play. The French international simply holds all the ingredients needed to become one of the best in his position and hugely versatile also. He can pick a pass, quick on his feet, he can tackle and is hugely influential in both the defensive and attacking phases of play.

Ndombele has only shown a little of his capabilities in a Tottenham shirt under Pochettino, struggling for confidence and form whilst being in an out of the starting XI. However, the current climate at Spurs may be the chance for a fresh start. Mourinho is a huge advocate of box-to-box midfielders and Ndombele is more than capable in fulfilling the roles that Mourinho may demand of him.

lineup

The Portuguese coach seeks to win matches in transition which means his teams are hard to break down and also possess a player who is well-versed in breaking up attacking play and quickly shifting the ball from defence into attack in an instant. Not only that, but can also consummately dribble the through pressing systems which instigates swift attacking patterns in the final third. Tanguy Ndombele can give Mourinho those traits in abundance. If deployed next to Eric Dier or Harry Winks in the middle pivot within a 4-2-3-1 system, it will provide Mourinho with the perfect balance in the middle with Dier/Winks sitting as the holding force – a reincarnation of Claude Makelele – and building from the back. Ndombele will surely be tasked with doing much of the running, carrying the ball from midfield to attack with his sheer power and dribbling abilities.

Mourinho loves his midfield powerhouses, Ndombele could provide the perfect tonic.

SERGE AURIER?

EJ0DBqFXkAAJPD9

Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier has proven a controversial figure for much of his career and there has been no shortage of the needless drama during his Tottenham career too. If Pochettino may have been lenient to his antics, Aurier is about to be under the tutelage of a manager with a similar controversial pedigree, but with a reputation for a no nonsense approach. The right-back can choose to tame his ego and embrace his new manager or choose the highway. If he opts for the former, Mourinho could potentially have a totally different animal on his hands. Despite his nature, Aurier’s footballing abilities can become a real weapon if Mourinho manages to get the best out of him. His attacking qualities are unmatched, the marauding runs down the right and his perfectly whipped and weighted crosses have already been showcased in North London but its in his discipline and defending that so often lets him down.

Regularly considered one of the best defensive coaches to grace the game, Mourinho will certainly iron out Aurier’s defensive lapses in concentration and transform him into the kind of player Tottenham dreamt of when they signed him from Paris Saint-Germain over just over two years ago.

Aurier has long been considered a right-back with massive potential, maybe its time he finally fulfills that promise under one of the best managers around.

Ben Chilwell is a Player Primed For More

Ben Chilwell is a Player Primed For More

Three assists in a single game at international level really is an impressive feat for a forward or an attacking midfielder.

When its a left-back clocking up these kind of statistics, then you really must take them seriously.

Ben Chilwell’s man of the match performance against Montenegro was a further indication that this is a player well on his way to becoming one of the best English left-backs since Ashley Cole.

Maybe even better.

Certainly, the quality of the opposition as we know didn’t prove a test for Southgate’s men, but you have to beat what’s in front of you. England achieved all that with consummate ease and Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell was at the heart of it all.

City

With Euro 2020 fast approaching next summer, Southgate will be working to perfect his squad for the tournament. While the attack will almost certainly pick itself, its in defence where the problem lies. Who should be the permanent partner for Harry Maguire? Who are Gareth Southgate’s go to full-backs? Southgate has an array of quality full-backs to pick from. As well as the tried and trusted duo of Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier. There are also Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Reece James emerging behind the scenes. Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw are also capable options.

But, on the evidence of Thursday night, Southgate may not need the necessary headache. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Chilwell held their own. It will be interesting to see how they fare against better opposition, but both players looked right at home against Montenegro. Offering so much going forward, both in their deliveries, marauding runs and quality in possession.

Thursday’s game was only Chilwell and Arnold’s third start together, but going forward, they must be given the chance to bed in properly ahead of next summer. It’s vitally important Southgate instils some consistency in his back four which is why he must choose his starting back four sooner rather than later.

Southgate can do no wrong in opting for Ben Chilwell as his permanent left-back. It is no fluke that his current form has coincided with Leicester City’s resurgence under Brendan Rodgers at the King Power. The academy product has been a revelation since his introduction into the first team in 2016, making the position his own replacing the veteran Christian Fuchs. Chilwell has matured remarkably into the role.

It wasn’t the first time the player contributed three goals in a single game, he did so for Leicester City in their record breaking 9-0 victory over Southampton a few weeks ago. Scoring the first, and assisting another two.

It’s also worthy to note that Chilwell is currently part of the best defence in the Premier League, at this time of writing. Progressively becoming one of the most well-rounded full-backs in Europe.

He was the subject of much interest to Liverpool before they secured Andrew Robertson’s services from Hull City. During last summers window, he was mooted for a move to the Etihad but he opted to stay. With Guardiola unsure of his current options, a big money move for Chilwell will not come as a surprise.

City

City aren’t the only ones. Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on the player too and there is much talk of Stamford Bridge becoming his most likely destination joining Lampard’s impressive crop of young English players.

Like all great modern full-backs, Chilwell is heavily involved in much of England and Leicester City’s attacking play, providing a lot of width while the wingers in front of him more or less cut inside. Not only does Chilwell, see a lot of the ball, he’s also very accurate on it too. A manager’s dream. Brendan Rodgers and Gareth Southgate are currently living that fantasy.

While full-backs are expected to attempt aimless passes or crosses into the penalty area, Chilwell is more intentional and accurate with his own. His assist for Oxlade-Chamberlain against Montenegro is a perfect example. Rather than picking an area to whip the cross into, the Leicester City left-back had his target in sight and executed the cross perfectly for the Liverpool midfielder to score. He does the same thing for his club, regularly trying to pick out Vardy in behind a high defensive line. He’s pretty accurate with it too completing close to 80 percent of his passes for Leicester this term [WhoScored].

Though his heat map at times could paint the picture of an old-school winger, his positioning and marauding runs are pretty much calculated. Performing those movements when he needs to. It’s his understanding of when to stay in position or deviate from it that makes him such a well-rounded full-back. If needed, he also has a knack of contributing in central areas too, often pulling the strings alongside James Maddison and Youri Tielemans.

Against Montenegro, Ben Chilwell also showed he can make the telling passes when needed. It was his cutting edge through ball that split the defence open for Jadon Sancho to assist Tammy Abraham’s first England goal. It’s performances such as these that shows the kind of growth and maturity that is ever present in Chilwell’s game.

City

No wonder why is he is such highly coveted full-back. Not only is he dangerous in wide areas and dead ball situation but he also holds the added intelligence and awareness to contribute centrally too. For a player who is only 22 years of age, there is so much that Ben Chilwell can achieve. Does he choose a bigger club or stay at a progressive club like Leicester City? The decision is up to him. What is clear, however, is that Ben Chilwell is well on his way to reaching the pinnacle of his career.

It’s Time For Pablo Dybala to Finally Become the Face of Juventus

It’s Time For Pablo Dybala to Finally Become the Face of Juventus

Paulo Dybala once again, dug Juventus out of a hole as he scored the winning goal against AC Milan in Turin before the international break. Coming on as second-half substitute for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Argentine playmaker proved why Maurizio Sarri cannot afford to overlook him in future.

The Argentine superstar instead opted to stay in Turin after much speculation last summer and has made a flying start to the season. He’s made 10 appearances this season (7 starts, and 3 as a sub). For a player of his calibre, why isn’t Dybala one of the first names on the team sheet?

Roma v Juventus - Serie A - Stadio Olimpico

When called upon this season, the Argentinian is starting to rediscover the kind of form that made him one of the most fearsome attacking players in the world during 2017/18 season. The simple fact that he may not be Sarri’s main man currently is spurring him on to become the player Juventus dreamt of since he his move from Palermo back in 2015.

Rewind back to the summer of 2018, Paulo Dybala was the main man, the face of Juventus and the future of the club.

Wearing the iconic no.10 shirt previously worn by the likes of Michel Platini, Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Del Piero, he has been earmarked to follow in the footsteps of those legendary club icons. He hit a staggering 22 goals in the 2017/18 Serie A campaign, and was very much the star of Max Allegri’s team.

However, things have changed considerably for the Argentine.

The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid to lead another Champions League push and the club’s relentless pursuit of Europe’s premier competition clouded their recruitment drive as they threw mega money at the problem, securing the services of the 5 time Champions League winner. The Portuguese’s arrival in Turin subsequently froze Dybala out of the team and into the shadows.

Juventus fans turned their attentions to a new saviour.

City

Last season, Dybala struggled to hold down a permanent spot in Max Allegri’s side, he only scored 5 league goals and in the summer was made available for sale.

As the club invested heavily in Matthijs De Ligt, Aaron Ramsey, Adrien Rabiot and the return of Higuaín, it was reported that Dybala was no longer needed in Turin, being offered to various clubs around Europe such as Manchester United and Tottenham so Juventus could balance their books.

Dybala was on the fringes. Manchester United pulled out of the deal because of his high wage demands and a late move to Tottenham was scuppered because of his image rights which will have proved too difficult to complete.

It would have been very difficult for the Juventus faithful to see one of their star men leave. Though, it hasn’t always been plain sailing for Dybala.

Despite Juventus occupying top spot in the Serie A table, their performances under Sarri has been underwhelming often scraping victories coming back from behind or struggling to conjure up any magic in the final third.

City

The Argentine has only completed 90 minutes three times this season.

Despite his lack of minutes, Juventus just aren’t the same without him in the team. Much of their best football this season has been centred around the Paulo Dybala. He started and scored in a 2-1 win over closest challengers Inter Milan, bagged both goals in a comeback win against Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League, scored in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Lecce – a game which they really should have won – and scoring the winner against AC Milan last weekend.

It’s not only the goals and assists that highlights Paulo Dybala’s influence on the team. It’s his ability to create something out of nothing. His understanding with his fellow forwards seems to have improved vastly too. The Argentine is the glue that links the midfield and attack together.

When Dybala is on song, Juventus follow suit. When he is not in the team, Juventus tend to lack ideas, invention and creativity.

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Paulo Dybala could once again find his name shining in the headlines about a potential departure, but if Sarri holds any sense, he would persuade the Argentine to stay for the long haul, integrating him as a vital component in his side.

On the evidence of Juventus’ last few games, Cristiano Ronaldo tends to be slowing down. Sarri has opted to substitute the forward in the last two games. However, its clear to see that Juventus make major improvements when Dybala is introduced as was the case against AC Milan.

The breakthrough came when Dybala picked up the ball on the edge of the area and wriggled free from Milan’s defence firing low past Donnarumma. Just what Juventus needed. Dybala’s ability to operate in tight spaces, wriggling out of challenges especially when faced with two or three opponents pressing him. Also, he is so comfortable and adept at playing in between the lines, often running into space or collecting passes where other players aren’t so confident operating in. Much of Sarri’s system hinges on playing centrally which means that Dybala is already playing more through balls than usual.

His influence under Allegri, may have regressed somewhat but under Sarri’s system, Dybala has adapted and is appreciated in a team that progresses the ball better in central areas. The player is becoming a reference point for much of their attacking football.

It is evidently clear that Sarri must build his side around Paulo Dybala rather than Cristiano Ronaldo. While Ronaldo’s influence is slowly waning, Paulo Dybala’s is just getting better.

Maurizio Sarri would be wise to realise that or else Dybala may seek to become appreciated elsewhere.

Can James Maddison Stake His Claim For a Regular England Place?

Can James Maddison Stake His Claim For a Regular England Place?

Leicester City are simply on a roll this season.

Ever since Brendan Rodgers entered the King Power, the club have enjoyed an incredible rise Leicester City have won 15 of their 25 league games under the former Liverpool and Celtic coach. The whole squad is playing with the confidence of a side staking a major claim for a shout at the Premier League title let alone the Champions League places.

Much of the credit must go to Brendan Rodgers for his side’s outstanding form, but his players certainly deserve a share of the glory. It may be Jamie Vardy carrying all the plaudits for his record in front of goal but James Maddison is a man who has been just as remarkable in Leicester’s rapid rise.

The attacking midfielder has received heat in the past for his apparent arrogance and overconfidence, but his performances as of late shows he can certainly walk the walk.

GettyImages-1169965414.jpg

4 goals and 2 assists from 11 Premier League games highlights his significance in Brendan Rodgers’ setup. James Maddison has become the beating heart of a side playing scintillating football. The game against Arsenal at the weekend was proof of the giant strides that Rodgers is leading this team into, arguably toppling the heights of when the side that so famously lifted the Premier League trophy in 2016.

With particular additions of Youri Tielemans, Ben Chilwell, Ricardo Pereira, Wilfred Ndidi and Caglar Soyuncu, this is a side that can truly match it with the best and James Maddison is at the centre of it all. Against Arsenal at the King Power, Maddison was at his sparkling best, scoring his sides second and showcasing a maturity in his game that has truly been admired since his move to the top-flight from Norwich City. The simple fact that he created the most chances out of any midfielder in the Premier League last season is a testament to his unique qualities.

No Premier League midfielder can better Maddison’s three shots per game this season, while he’s eighth in the league for key passes and 11th for dribbles per game. He’s also the fifth most-fouled player in English football’s top flight [WhoScored].

The way in which he took his goal against Arsenal was so measured and assured, he made it look easy. The shot is neither driven or curled, blasted nor shaped; it’s simply delivered where it needed to go with a minimum of fuss. Whatever you make of Maddison’s arrogance or overconfidence in himself, its these instances which tend to force his critics to swallow their own words.

As Rodgers has learned so quickly, its about finding the perfect balance between indulging such as an influential player and reminding him of his responsibilities elsewhere. As well as becoming Leicester’s focal point in midfield, Maddison has also been tasked with pressing when needed and even sacrificing his duties in the final third to drop deep and orchestrate the play in front of the opposition midfield as well as beyond it.

Getting the fans off their seats is an important role in an attacking midfielder, and Maddison certainly achieves that with great pride. He is the kind of player who seems empowered by his own confidence, as if the bigger the grin on his face, the greater the level to which he must elevate himself.

We know he can provide the spark at club level but can he do so on the international stage too?

Gareth Southgate has challenged Maddison to be ‘high performance, and low maintenance’. On the evidence of his displays in recent weeks, the England coach’s message has been received loud and clear. He has yet to feature for England as of yet and he is hoping his form will allow him the chance to prove his mettle in England’s forthcoming European qualification fixtures. Maybe even becoming a key figure for England when Euro 2020 kicks off next summer.

His decision to visit a Leicester casino, after leaving the squad due to illness, in order to watch the 2-1 defeat to Czech Republic last month was a distraction Southgate could have done without. It certainly didn’t help Maddison’s case taking that controversial decision, but now the midfielder may just be handed an opportunity to redeem himself and most significantly stake his claim for a permanent place in Southgate’s exciting England team.

City

James Maddison is certainly up against it though, with the likes of Ross Barkley, Mason Mount and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all vying for his role in the attacking midfield department.

Southgate will be expected to overhaul his midfield for the final two games with England only needing a point to guarantee qualification to next years European Championship.

It’s all well and good performing for your club on a weekly basis, but when on international grounds, you’re on a much higher and grander platform to perform and it is a task that lies in wait for the hugely talented James Maddison.

Maddison’s has become one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League over the past year but can he maintain that spark and work ethic to become the wonderful player he has been earmarked to be? Can he now replicate that form at international level? He may just be the creative spark England so desperately need.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Could Look to Hakim Ziyech to Fill Creative Void

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Could Look to Hakim Ziyech to Fill Creative Void

Manchester United have gone behind to Crystal Palace, West Ham, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Sheffield United this season and failed to retrieve a draw out of any of those games. It is a worrying streak for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that implies a lack of conviction and star quality in a side that is crying out for them.

The last time United came back from going behind to win came against Southampton in March, the game before that remarkable night in Paris – the night that became a fairy tale has become the origin of a nightmare period for the club. Solskjaer became permanent boss after that and since then, they have fallen behind in 11 games in all competitions and have ended up on the losing side in every single one of them.

Mateo-Kovacic-Chelsea-landscape.jpg
United suffered yet another disappointing defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.

Gone are those days when United trying to overcome a deficit was one of the hallmarks of the English game especially at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s great sides will attempt anything under the sun to pick up a victory, rather than even rescuing a draw. Relentless attacking prowess used to be the trick, now United are like faulty equipment, only useful in spurts.

13 goals scored in their first 11 Premier League games is certainly not good enough, with 5 players scoring only once. After going 1-0 down to Bournemouth last weekend, United couldn’t conjure up any magic to rescue the game, but for the odd 20-yard efforts and the lack of penetrative openings.

It’s worrying times for Solskjaer and he will need to be looking to solve these creative issues. United have been linked recently with a whole repertoire of attacking midfielders. Jadon Sancho, James Maddison, Kai Havertz and Bruno Fernandes to name a few. Though, one man who Solskjaer could certainly look to:

Ajax’s magician Hakim Ziyech.

Eredivisie: Ajax vs Feyenoord
Hakim Ziyech (right) has become a central figure in Erik Ten Hag’s exciting Ajax side.

It still baffles many that the Moroccan is still plying his trade in Amsterdam. With Frenkie De Jong, Matthijs De Ligt and Kasper Dolberg all opting for pastures new, many thought Ziyech will eventually follow suit by the end of the window. But when you’re one of the clubs key influences, why would you have the need to depart?

While many predicted a transitioning period, Ajax have seamlessly picked up where they left off, scoring 39 goals in their first 12 games and scoring 10 goals from 4 games in the Champions League. Ziyech has been at the centre of it all. Against Chelsea in the 4-4 draw, he once again showed why certain clubs were mad not to pursue his services last summer with another attacking masterclass. The Moroccan has either scored or assisted in 9 goals of his last 12 Champions League appearances – 5 goals and 6 assists.

So far this season he has scored eight goals with a staggering 10 assists in all competitions. He didn’t add to that tally at Stamford Bridge, but he did leave a talented Chelsea defence in tatters with his technical skill, creativity and his unerring deliveries from wide areas. It was his cross that expertly found Quincy Promes ghosting at the back post to score Ajax’s second goal.

anp-400582281-1000x562
Ziyech netted from a corner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ziyech also had a hand in their 3rd goal, completely bamboozling Kepa scoring from a corner. Ten minutes later, he then teed up Donny Van De Beek to break Chelsea hearts once again.

It was a true representation of the ability and influence he holds in the whole squad. Ajax are never worried about lacking ideas or creativity in the final third. They simply have it in abundance with Ziyech, Tadic and Van De Beek around. It’s the reason why Ajax have been one of the most exciting teams to watch over the past year. Against, Lille on Wednesday, he was again at his sparkling best, with a goal and an assist to his name.

How Solskjaer would love a player of Ziyech’s ilk right now.

The stats from last season, as well as this season, tell its own story. 21 goals and 24 assists from his breakout year, showed why he was the subject of much interest from Europe’s top clubs last summer.

What’s so unique about the player, is that he could play anywhere across the attacking midfield positions. Left wing, right wing, as a no.10, as a no.8. You name it.

The Moroccan certainly has what it takes to bring back the excitement to Old Trafford. There is certainly a creative void at Old Trafford, especially with Paul Pogba on the treatment table. Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira are certainly adequate options, but they do not hold the X-factor Solskjaer needs. United have regularly flattered to deceive with their laboured possession, failing to break down teams who defend in numbers. Despite the pace and movement United hold, there isn’t a player behind them – aside from Pogba – who can pick them out. Much of United’s play is in front of defences rather than in behind.

Ziyech could be the solution.

The former FC Twente midfielder can create something out of nothing. When faced with team that sits deep, the Moroccan can simply take a swing at his left foot and you’d bet your house it will end up in the back of the net. His goal against Valencia in the Champions League this season was simply out of this world. Picking up the ball on the right hand side, he cut in and unleashed an absolute scorcher from all of about 30-yards.

His deliveries from open play and set-pieces are so deadly. Often deployed on the right in Ajax’s system, its his knack of drifting inside and picking out passes and crosses that cause panic in the opposition. His assist for Quincy Promes against Lille in was an expert reminder. Rather than having the  qualities of a natural winger, Ziyech is Ajax’s chief creator from the right. That’s not to say he cannot perform the role of a out-an-out winger. He’s got the work-rate, skill, pace and creative acumen to be just as effective.

anp-400582281-1000x562
Ziyech is certainly an option Solskjaer could consider for his attack.

Hakim Ziyech has shown he deserves a bigger spotlight and platform to perform in, and there is no better place than the Premier League.

Manchester United are in desperate of need some injection and enthusiasm in their attacking play and the addition of Hakim Ziyech could certainly fill that massive void.

Mateo Kovacic is a Man Reborn

Mateo Kovacic is a Man Reborn

There was an instance near the end of Chelsea’s game against Watford where Mateo Kovacic seemed to almost roll down his socks as his side aimed to close out the match to pick up their seventh straight away victory. Whether it was a bit of over-confidence becoming sure of victory or as a result of fatigue, however strange it may have been, this is a man who is enjoying his football once again.

Against Watford, Mateo Kovacic followed up his world-class performance against Burnley serving up yet another masterclass as Chelsea triumphed 2-1 at Vicarage Road.

Chelsea FC v Valencia CF: Group H - UEFA Champions League

The Croatian is showing why Chelsea were right to make his loan move permanent in the summer.

Deemed surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, the Croatian has risen up from the rubble in Spain to become a vital cog in Frank Lampard’s flourishing Chelsea team. At the point of his move to Real Madrid, Kovacic was touted as one of the brightest young midfielders in world football after some scintilating performances at Inter Milan. Roberto Mancini, manager of the club at the time revealed that the Italian giants were forced to sell the Croatian because of Financial Fair Play regulations. Regardless, he was rewarded for his time in Italy with a dream move to Spain in 2015 for just €29 million.

With the expectation of being Luka Modric’s heir, it did not work out the way Kovacic would have wanted. Despite Real Madrid battling on all fronts in the Champions League and La Liga, Kovacic’s impact and involvement in the teams efforts were limited.

Mateo-Kovacic-Chelsea-landscape
Mateo Kovacic endured a difficult spell at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The emergence of Casemiro along with the brilliance of Toni Kroos and international team-mate Luka Modric meant Kovacic could only enjoy a bit-part role. When the Croatian did get the opportunities he needed under Rafael Benitez, he was deployed in a variety of positions; attacking midfield, a box-to-box player, wide right and wide left, his development wasn’t helped by Benitez’ indecision. He only scored his first La Liga goal in January 2017, two years into his spell in Madrid.

A move to Chelsea may have been the refreshment he needed. His is first season under in England Sarri brought similar issues. Underused and undervalued as Sarri stuck to his ways in trying to implement his ‘Sarri-Ball’ philosophy. As much as the fans hated the ideology, there was simply no room for Kovacic to grow. Had Sarri still been in charge now, Kovacic may well have returned back to Real Madrid.

Under Frank Lampard though, the Croatian dynamo has enjoyed a new lease of life. It certainly would have been a different story had N’Golo Kante been fit in recent weeks, Kovacic may well have been rotting on the bench once again. He has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

While the performances against Burnley and Watford were the perfect highlight reels for Kovacic’s unique qualities. It was the away win in Amsterdam against Ajax in their Champions League group tie which was just as extraordinary. Chelsea denied Ajax the freedom to express themselves on the front foot, pressing and harrying forcing them to surrender possession in dangerous areas to counter, and much of that was down to Mateo Kovacic.

Jorginho was imperious in front of the back four, keeping things ticking over. Mason Mount pressed hard and never stopped running, but it was Mateo Kovacic who was simply brilliant with and without the ball. His 92.6% pass completion rate, losing the ball only six times illustrated his major involvement in Chelsea’s victory.

manchester-city-2761407_1920
Kovacic was the star man in Chelsea’s impressive victory away to Ajax in the Champions League.

The Croatian was calm, collected and never seemed in any hurry to exert his influence in the middle. It was the complete midfield performance.

Without the ball, he is just as good. Kovacic attempted and completed three of his tackles against Watford and was successful in 100% of his aerial duels despite his short frame. It will be extremely difficult for Lampard to leave him out of the team once Kante returns from injury, and on recent evidence the French international may have to fight his way back into Lampard’s line up once he returns.

So what has changed for Kovacic?

Firstly, the Croatian has been given much more opportunities and he is repaying the faith placed in him. Secondly, his position is the same as under Sarri but he seems more himself in a system that requires his rampaging qualities on the ball. He, like many other players last season, was handcuffed by Sarri’s tepid system last season.

manchester-city-2761407_1920
Kovacic is now a key part of Lampard’s team.

Frank Lampard has broken those shackles.

The Chelsea legend has freed up Kovacic a bit more, encouraging him to be more attack-minded whilst maintaining his defensive responsibilities. There is also a seamless and telepathic understanding with those around him too, especially Jorginho – both aware of each other’s whereabouts at all times. It’s because of the Croatian, Jorginho has rediscovered the kind of form that made him one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe two seasons ago at Napoli.

Mateo Kovacic has been a revelation so far this season. Proving the doubters and critics who were against his permanent signing in the summer wrong with some masterful performances. This is the player that Real Madrid were hoping for when they signed him back in 2015. However, their loss is Chelsea’s gain right now.

Mateo Kovacic is a man reborn.
